Would you believe , "The Board of Education " ?
The "guiding light "
As we marched through those massive doorways, we had only our thoughts and speculations as to what the new school year would hold for us.
For the seventh graders it was a bewildering and almost frightening experience. For the eighth graders it was merely a break be t ween two summers , just the daily repetition , holding few rewards short of eighth grade promotion. It was "old hat" for the ninth graders , and yet it held a special interest because this was it , the year for extra good showing, the year of fun and frolic , and the year of promotion into senior high.
We can look back on the day we installed the new J.C.L. with a feeling of pride. That was when the voice of the student body took up the torch and successfully carried us through the first s emester. After the installation -ceremony, we prepared to honor the students of scholastic achievement for second semester of last year ('67-'68).
Not all our activities were fun and frolic this year. For instance , we were visited by three prison convicts who gave us the benefit of hearing their life stories and what it is to lead a life of crime. Also , we heard from Mr. Sam Dalton who advised us to look not to ourselves , but to God for ways of solving the strife present in our world today. The impact of the emotion and good sense presented in these assemblies had a profound effe ct on us all.
There were fun times too , as we remember the Valentine assembly, Health Day , Talent Sho w, the visits from the LHS boys glee , girls glee , and orchestra, and the man y a f t er- s chool activities
The Journalism class again this year sponsored a school project: " PROJECT: VIET NAM. " The Christmas card drive was once more pronounced a smashing succes s and numerous replies were received. The class also planned and presented a Christma s party for the children ~t the Lincoln Orthopedic Hospital. Joined by members of the ninth grade boy ' s glee , the Whittier students sang carols and presented the children gi fts of apple-Santas We found that the warmth of sharing ourselves with others made t he glow of the Holiday Season brighter for us also .
There wa s t he academic side also. We all experienced the new computerized grading s ys tem for the fi rst time this year. For some it was every four and a half weeks (when the down-slip s came out) , for the rest it was every nine weeks (when report cards came out) . The nin t h graders kicked off a new English-Social Studies program which incorporated f ea t ure films into the literature program. It was the first of its kind in Lincoln and one of t he few in the country. We felt we gained immeasurably from this facet of stud y whi ch was added to our curriculum and we are grateful to have had this.opportunity.
Best remembered t hough was the great release , the period of rest, fun , and no s chool. Years spent in junior high are years of growing up. Those are profitable , memorable years which are never lost , but linger on in our memories.

Out of the heavens, like a lightning bolt , he came on his format of good cheers preading joy , happiness , and love dust.
It happened at t h e 21st Valentine Assembly in the history of Whittier, when " Cupie" visited our school. The tradition was started in 1949 when someone felt we ought to celebrate this "holiday of sweethearts." It is traditional for the ninth grade class to vote among themselves and elect a King and Queen for the assembly. The runners -up act as attendants. It was tradition for the girls to wear formals and the boys tuxes, but this has been greatly relaxed over the years. Waltzers have always been a part of the assembly. These couples always add a flare of romance and gallantry to the assembly.
This year we had the old and new together-the new was a skit directed by Miss Adams. The skit was a take-off on the "Dating Game " T.V. show. Playing the roles were: Bill Hudson , as Master of Ceremonies; Jeannine Green as the contestant; Bob Athan , Randy Knaub , and Bob Knollenberg as bachelors; James Adkins as "Cupie "; and Nicky Payne as " Harry the Honker. " Our thanks to the actor s , writers , and director.
We should also express our appreciation to these people: ·Miss J om for organization of the court; Mr. Christensen for s tage decorations ; Miss Griffith for training the waltzers; all the students who helped set it up and who were in it; and the Property Committee.
All in all it was a day to remember and we , the ninth grade class , will to next year's ninth graders , and all tho s e to follow , all the fun and hard work we had in putting on thi s assembly.
" Oh , my gosh! My love dust failed again! Oh, well , back to the Chemistry lab I just can ' t under s tand it-and I'm so CUTE too!!! " -"CUPIE " ( Jimmie Adkins)
"I Can't Get No Satisfaction "
" I can see why What he really need s to get is some RIGHT GUARD because there ' s a distinctive air about him!"
"Accompany
Thank you! Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. It always warms my heart to have intelligent people recognize genuine talent when they see it!!!
Slimy -Slim to Havana, Cuba! You're kiddin' me of course, I wouldn't accompany him across the street!!!"

Acting as the governing body, the Junior Civic League's main project was securing approval of a traffic signal on 22nd and Vine Streets.
They also sold pennants for a week and organized the Honors Assembly.
The secretaries and Red Cross delegates had a drive to help the Biafrans , and sent baskets to needy families at Thanksgiving time.
Second semester officers had no trouble in finding something to keep them busy. The Junior Civic League did the work for the Honors Assembly again , had a talent assembl y, planned the 9A party, and began a new idea called " Spiri t Day." Students were urged to wear school colors-blue and gold-on this day and the day ended with the s inging of our school song, "Whittier."
