"It has been a good year. It has been very exciting! I really enjoyed my final year at Goodrich. It's been fun while it lasted but I can't wait until next year when I finally get to go to Lincoln High and I'll finally be a high school student."
By Abby Wood
- Kelsey Rodriguez-
s time ticks by the world is around usnstantly c g es • moves. The first year of the new millennium brought lots of interesting events around the world, nation, and here at Goodrich Middle School as w.ell. The New Year did not bring as many changes this year as some might have thought. At the start of the School year Goodrich was populated with 806 students. 7th and 8th grade had to be divided up into 3 mini teams and the 3rd being smaller than all the others with about 50 students. We had a new addition to the school which was a ramp that replaced the electric wheel chair ramp. This is a good contribution to the school. It is good to see us changing our ways to make our visit here at Goodrich pleasant for everyone. Katina Golliday was selected for one of the featured students for the Lincoln Journal Star Newspaper. To start the school year off there is alway& a press conference where the school board members meet at a chosen school to hold the press conference. Goodrich was the school chosen for this event. Mitchel Memming, Abby Wood, Kathy Erickson, Ramsey Yousif, and Matt Jennings were among some of the students attending the press conference. Later on in the year Mayor Don Wesely came to Goodrich and he proclaimed the beginning of "Engineer Week" for Goodrich. We also have a new program called ELL(English Language Learners) which was once called ESL(English as a second language) but then the school found out most kids already knew 2 languages which defeats the whole purpose of calling it ESL so the school changed the name to ELL. This program helps kids of a foreign language learn English so they can have the same opportunities as everyone else. A lot of kids from Goodrich participate in high school sports at Lincoln High and other high schools in the capital city. Mrs. Scott says, " This year in 9th grade she has seen the highest number of 9th graders going out for a highschool sport. " she has not seen this for along time. This year we had the privilage of voting on the new school name for the highschool going to be built. The votes came out that the new highschool would be named "Northstar." It just so happens that one of our student's mothers here at Goodrich came up with that name and she never thought it would be picked. This year at lunch we had one minor change and that was the way our lunchroom was to operate. We had to wait and be dismissed by Mr. Ernst or by the lunchroom coordi nator calling our table. If you ask most kids they will probably all agree that they don't like the way it was set up. It t ook away valuable lunch time because you have to be di smissed in order to get you food.
Although it wa a very bu y year here at Goodrich it was also very bu y locally, nationally, and globally. Something new happens just about every day and we can't seem to keep up with all of it. There are many things that have happened local that some people might not know about. The Abby Wood school year 2000-2001 was one of highs and lows. The Nebraska Football team was rated number one in the pre-season polls but fell short of their expectations of winning another ational Championship. On the other hand, the Nebraska Volleyball team went undefeated and went on to win the National Championship. The men's and women's basketball teams didn't show up to play basketball this year, so both had less than winning seasons. This year at Lincoln High they celebrated the 100th anniversary for Lincoln High Boys Basketball. On the other side of things the weather here in Nebraska consisted of a hot drought-ridden summer and record-breaking winter.
Nationally things where a little bit busier. This is our "Year in review. " It was a year for making history on the Election Day, but George W. Bush was announced as President of the United States several weeks later after many recounts and several court appearances. The First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, was elected Senator of New York, while Bill Clinton continues to make the headlines. Richard Hatch won the one million dollars from the first season of the hit TV show "Survivor." The hot television show of the year was "Survivor," which forced the sitcom "Friends," to extend to a 40-minute show. It was abattle for TV ratings and "Survivor" was the one who survived. Itwas a sad year for racing fans when the King of NASCAR Racing, Dale Earnhart Sr , died after crashing into the wall at the Daytona 500. Another death in the celebrity world was of Charles Shulz, the creator of "Snoopy," the comic series. Gladiator and Erin Brockovich were hit movies this year bringing i n record breaking sales. The year brought a breakup of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman and the marriage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Harry Potter was a big hit with most Elementary aged kids. The stock market took a plunge as the economy took a dive, and the price of heating your home rose drastically.
This year was a year of tragedies, with earthquakes around the world. The earthquakes wrecked many towns and establishments while wounding many people. A United StaJes submarine struck and then sank a Japanese fishing vessel. A terrorist blast ripped the U.S.S. Cole killing several in the process. On the presidential side Bill Clinton's trip to India was the first by a United States president in -22 years.

What Makes 'School
Fun?
Many things can make the school ~ear fun. Such things are: teachers , friends, classes, and new suprises that life brings. Each of these things are important in their own way. Teachers, without them we wouldn't learn the things we do. As for friends, without them we would be bored. Classes are fun in their own way. Even though at times we have a lot of homework, and school doesn't look so great, clases will till have their bright side When we grow up, we also learn how to face new challenges. These challenges are great because they teach us something new that we can put to good use.

Ban
Everyday right after fifth period and 'B' lunch, a slight rumble of bass and a low hum fill the hallways of Goodrich, it comes from no where but from the band room. Jazz band practices everyday during fifth period, but at the end of the period, four young men plug in a five string Fender Pbass, whip out their Zildjian sticks, and play a little 'Jazz' of their own. The halls soon fill with the beat of their own music and they love it. This year several different groups of friends organized a new hobby for themselves. Two bands that have become slightly successful in their own way come straight out of Goodrich. They had many chances to show their talent over this year through performances at Belmont Community Center and the Ninth Grade Celebration to name just a couple.
I nnocent Bystandards
Innocent Bystandards is a band made up of three musicians, two from Goodrich and one from Lincoln High. Drummer Cory Watermeier, Bassist Nick Noel, and Guitar Player Scott Cavadini. They are a Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band that practices after school and on the weekends.
TRIAL BY ERROR
Trial By Error is a band composed of four current Goodrich students, all of which are 9th graders Drummer Brandon Filbert, Bassist Joel Wagner, Guitar Player Mike Moore, and Vocalist Jeff Tinnean. They draw their musical creativity from artist's such as The Deftones, Spineshank, and God mack. The band continues to write songs and practice every weekend.
Can you imagine having to move away from your home to a place where you do not know anybody or a word that anyone is saying? That is what the ELL
States from nine different countries and for many different reasons.
After coming to the United States the ELL students have to take a test about how much English they know o they can be appropriately placed in a ELL class. There are six levels of ELL tudents in our chool have dealt with. The ELL program, also known a Engli h Language Learner progrsam, is a class that teaches foreign students to read, write, speak, li ten, and learn the English language. The ELL
classes. Level one, is for students who don't know that much English and are very dependent on the ELL program. Level six is • for student who are not very dependant on the ELL program. In levels one and two students have three classes of ELL a day. Levels three and four are for
students with more independence and only need two periods of ELL a day. Finally levels five and six participants have one class of ELL a day.
The ELL program was added to our school this year because the ELL program throughout Lincoln Public Schools continues to expand. Programs at other area schools classes where too full, and they had no room for new students. The ELL program was also moved to Goodrich so the ELL students in our area could attend their neighborhood school, so students wouldn't have to ride the bu all the the way across
town to a school that did have the ELL program. The addition of this program has added to our diversity and global learning experience.

CHANGE
Sam Hartley says one of the biggest changes from grade school to Goodrich is lockers. They have to use them, and that there are also more kids and relationships with student.
When Thao Chu came to Goodrich she noticed that there is a lot more homework now. She also had to get used to changing classes each period.
Jessica flashes her pearly whites before heading off to class.

A Whole New
Most 8th and 9th graders probably remember how the 7th grade wasn't exactly what we expected. At the beginning of the new year in~8th or 9th grade, occasionally we find it kind of humor- _ ous when a 7th grader either has trouble finding a class, opening a locker, or 'teacher fear'. It's ironic because those uncomfortable or embarrassing situations once happened to all of us.
Goodrich differs an awful lot from Belmont, Campbell, West Lincoln, Fredstrom, or any el~ ementary school. Some 7th graders although unexpected, did get homework on the first day of school, on Fridays, and yes even over breaks. They had to adjust to no more recess breaks, other than Ms. Bolton, Ms. Brenden, or Mr Z planning on an outdoor activity. Realizing some growing up, at least a little bit, helpes them to adjust to these changes.
Although unexpected you do get homear work on the first
d y of school ....
However, with tough adjustments comes more freedom. Longer lunch periods, more food choices, a broader schedule of classes, and a bigger variety of teachers. Moving to the 8th grade should not require as much trouble adjusting.
Many of us that attend Goodrich Middle School have family members that attend school with us as well. Above is a picture of just some of the students that have relatives that go here with them, or even work here.
Ech of us at some ime or another as realized how importantfriendsand family are in our lives. Take a mintue to think. Who has always been there , who always listens, who always gives advice , good or bad , and who leaves the most lasting impre sion in your life? Which friends or family members support your achievements and dreams?
For each of us whether it be our third year here , our second, or even our first, we all have family and friends right behind us making sure we're headed where we are suppose to be aiming for.
Always had family . behind us .....
Middle school through is structure and diversity creates diversity creates oppertunities for new friendships. Some people kept friends from elementary school, who now feel like family. And maybe some have found a new best friend over the course of attending here. Some students have family members in the building. Either way, we all know how important it is to have someone there .

The new millennium did not bring forth everything we thought would: flying cars, pillform meals, living on mars, mo:ving walkways, and what not. But the year still held a lot of interesting things for all of us. • Remember the whole thing with the Y2k bug? Well, the predicted end of civilization as we knew it didn't happen, computeres ran, water supplies were not contaminated, and the world's populaton did not need the shelter of a survival bunker, but it was still pretty fun.
2000 proved to be a great year, maybe a little disappointing because it was not as exciting as we had anticipated, but then again predictions for our future will surely tell of our wild expectations. Those are just a few things we may remember for over the world. Locally, however, at Goodrich, many may recall a survey that was sent out to selected classes.
Well for those of you who do not know recall w were talking about, we' re speaking of the survey conducted by the publications class of Goodrich's favorites for the 2000-2001 school year. We asked everyone to tell about eight of their "favorites" Who nre1 , over the past year. We asked for your favotite actress, actor, TV show, movie, male singing group, female singing group, song, and album. F Choices consisted of about five choices for each n T(~ question, and then an empty space, so if your favor- V Ii-:~ ite was not listed, then you could tell us. After just about half the school took the survey, all 300 and
2 0 0 0 some we were collected and tallied. One long week •later the results ~ere finally in. Students top eight favorites for 2000-2001 can be found at right on the other page.

Above are just some of the many, many, people that have an incredible sense of style. As you see each of them has their own style , very unqiue and very .......... them.
Fa hion at Goodrich thi year aried o much between each of us. Some of our clothing placed u in the group of friends we were uppo edly expected to run with. But to u the clothes we wear, say who we are. Maybe we choo e the clothes becau e like the color , the tyle, or maybe it i just comfortable. Any way you look at it, our clothes expre sed our individuality, and for others they ~ill leave a la ting impres ion.

And into the big world.
Well, we've made it. We're not completly done with school, but 9 years is a lot to be accomplished. We're graduating from middle school this year, and moving on into a school, with not two, but four levels! Ahhh ! Are we ready to become the babies of a school again?
Some of us may not be. Some 9th graders are used to- "ruling the school". It took us two years to get where we are today, right? Starting all over again, some of us may not be able to handle that.
This year has changed a lot of us. Grades for graduation have started to count and we have no time to goof-off anymore. It's now time to keep our noses in the books and our eyes to the front of the class. Did we all do that? Nahl Our reality slap in the face hasn't quite come for all of us, but it soon will.
Starting all over againl some of us may not be able to handle that.
With turning 15 or 16, getting ready to drive or picking up a job, our pryorities differ from those of two years ago.
Graduation is now only three short years away, hopefully most of us if not all of us, are about to enter the best years of our lives. To those who are continuing and are leaving Goodrich behind, good luck!
There's not as much homework in middle school. Then there is High School.

This year in public&tions class was a new and exciting experience for all twenty two of u~. Many of us could often be seen in the hallways often or barging into classrooms. Believe it or not, it was all for an awesome purpose. We worked hard everyday ..... playing 'spoons ' , doing each other's hair and messing around on the internet the entire class period. But when the time came down to it we really shaped up and put our hearts into our jobs. When we did not get our work done in class, we also came in on the weekends to finish up on whatever needed to be done. When we first walked into this class we carried opinions of each other, some negative but we were walking out with some new best friends, including Mrs. Cosson.
to send out a huge thank you to Mrs. Schwindt, who helped out at the beginning of the ye " • .
Before the year is up, our class would al so like to give a sp ecial thanks to all the goodrich teachers for letting us pull out student s day in and day out.

Dedication
Shawnie Motsenbacher' s shoes would be very tough to fill. The average person would be overwelmed with the kind o work she puts in each day, but Shawnie can not only do h( job with ease, she does it with loads of kindness, patience, taler 1 skill, and a big heart.
At home or at school Shawnie always seem to be content happy. No matter how hard or how tough the day is, she alway does her work with a big smile and encouraging words. She is an
advocate for people who are are sometimes left out. Not only is Shawnie kind and generous but I has a great sense of humor and is very easy to talk to. Additionall.,r giving out great advice or listenin is another one of her specialities. She is very involved with her family and school and even aroun the community, not to metion, sh gives great hugs.
Shawnie' s family is a hug e part of her life. Her husband, Brian and two children, Samantha and Colte n provide love and support, and she is completely dedicated to them. Shawnie is a wonderful person and a wonderful teacher. Without Shawnie and the warrr t that she brings, Goodrich would not be the same. Thank you Shawnie for all the wonderfu l yeai and memories that you have shared and all the ones we are yet to be a part of. We hope th t aftc r all your years of teaching the ones here at Goodrich are the best of all.
