A time for change
The first and Last Day
by Enoch Ulmer
The first day we were happy, young, anxious, and immature
Not knowing what life would give us, but knowing life was for sure
We walked through the doors with cautious steps, but not cautious enough to stop us
We lived each day like it was Christmas Eve, not knowing what next it would bring us
Each day went by like a lightning bolt, but felt like each minute was an hour
We cherished each day the year had brought us, but then came the final hour
And on the Last Day something grew in our minds, an idea that would not retreat
It said each minute is a part of one's life and that each minute should not be forgotten

Tom Furby Principal
Change c.an be irritating and threatening or it can be interesting and exciting. Some see obstacles while others see opportunities.
For a number of years Goodrich students and teachers have been on teams. Last spring, after teachers visited other schools and disc~ possible advantages, we decided to put teachers on a ream near each other. We also gave students lockers in the same area hoping that it would help students be on time and arrive to class with their materials. Has it worked? I plan to ask some students and teachers before the end of the year to find out.
Another change will affect the ninth graders at the end of the year. Traditionally, ninth graders across the district have finished the year with a high school style graduation ceremony. Beginning this year principals at the nine junior high schools are being asked to do something differenl Each principal will meet with interested students, parents and teachers to plan a new end-of-the-year activity specifically for their building.
Although it is difficult to give up a habit or tradition, it can also be exciting to plan something new and strike off on a new course. The world is an ever-changing place and it is important to greet change with a positive attitude and a sense of excitemenl It is this combination of elements that enables us to grow.

Seventh graders open hearts
All decked out
Energetic! That is the word that best describes the seventh grade class of '92-'93. The energy that radiates off these students has at times depleted the energy sources of teachers, yet many good things have been accomplished.
The seventh grade hall was decorated with hallway "rites of passage" in the form of RINGS rules. These rules included: respecting others, in class on time, normal voice, going at a walk, and staying to self. Hallway road signs to direct these busy bees were also put up.
Seventh grade teachers encouraged and promoted social situations between both teams by holding an activity day.
Students chose four sessions. These activities included: card games, fashions, self-defense, volleyball, leaf printing, song writing, trivia basketball, Halloween crafts, board games, and the movie, Beauty and the Beast.
Jump Rope for Heart exhibited even more energy, and at the end of the first semester, both seventh grade teams honored students with McDonald's V.I.P. certificates, recognizing students in curricular areas of excellence.

Eighth graders "shuffle"
Working to win
Having their own hall has been positive and helpful to this social group of eighth graders as well as to the two teams of teachers who have worked more closely with each other than ever before.
The Olympican Cool cats celebrated Columbus Day by becoming informed about how Native Americans view the arrival of Columbus to America. The study included seeing the movie, "1492." Other activities included a unit on, "Being a Better Me." Representatives from the Lincoln community informed students about hairstyles, clothing, exercise, and foods that could h elp improve their appearance.
Students on the Olympian Dream Team took a field trip to Arbor Lodge and combined it with a scientific study of the environment. They visited the Industrial Technology Center at LHS to inform students of opportunities available in that area; students also printed their team logos on their own shirts with the help of LHS staff and students. Dream Team students attended the movie, Malcolm X during a unit on multicultural awareness and responded to the life story of Malcolm X with letters, poetry, drawings, and essays. The Dream Team also observed Women's History month in February.

Have appreciation for learning
Top of the deck
Ninth grade teachers presented an interdisciplinary unit on careers offering information on various types of non-professional and professional jobs for ninth grade students to become more informed about. A survey of students' career interests provided the background for the unit.
Team teaching and student placement in student assistance programs was also a primary focus.
Recognition assemblies were held each quarter to recognize students' academic achievement as well as their involvement in their school and community.
A special activity was held in place of ninth grade promotion in keeping with the Middle Level concept.
Ninth grade team leader, Bill Schulenberg, commented on the future of the 1992-93 class of ninth graders. "Both ninth grade teacher teams would like to see our students have an appreciation for learning. They should learn to think for themselves, make good decisions, evaluate their judgments, and respect others for the decisions they have made."

"Votes'' simulation involves students
Running a successful presidential campaign using propaganda was the focus of Mr. Bayne's Government class. Students were placed in small groups depending on their beliefs on such issues as, gun control, abortion, and capital punishment. Speeches, radio and T.V. commercials, and flyers were presented to support their issue or candidate for president of the United States.
A final "great" debate was held and a vote took place. Each class period had a different winner for president. They were: John Ferrin, Desmond Murry, Jill Andersen, Ryan Rader, and Ashley Lahners.
