?{jntli grade, an origina{ out{oot

'Distinctive{y different

The ninth grade class is very much aware of the challenges that lie ahead. A sense of awareness and determination describes this distinctively different and diverse group of young people. These students have had an opportunity to be a part of the middle level movement in a unique way; their ninth grade teachers have offered them opportunities to grow by using their own abilities, talents, and interests to help others feel . a sense of belonging through encouragement and caring. These ninth graders have worked as a team to better understand the problems of the homeless and illiterate.

Ninth grade teacher, Mrs. Rae Green, describes the ninth grade class as an interesting and diverse group with many unique interests and talents. "I hope that they continue to learn and mature in a positive direction and know that their hard work and dedication will bring rewards. I like the positive, enthusiastic, determined nature of our ninth grade class."

Complicated instructions, perplexed participant (top right) Adrianne Ybarra finds that making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches isn't as easy as it looks. "If only we could drive!" (middle right) Chuck Foley, Tim LaPointe, and Troy Bartek draw the car of their choice in the teachers' parking lot in Advanced Art. Successful students in the making (bottom right) Josh Rumbaugh, Michelle Kuhns, Faustina Banta, Stacey Francisco, and Kelly Klawitter use good study skills t0 show what it takes to become a successful student.

"Hey baby!" (top left) Jessica Allen becomes a child again as she dresses up for Halloween. Things that make you go hmmmm! (top right>, Ryan Douglas looks through a microscope in biology class. Out for the night (bottom left) Marie Antoinette (Michelle Harms) and Saddam Hussein (Shelly Nichols) tell about their interesting lives at "Night of the Notables." Practice makes perfect! (bottom right) Eddie Brown checks over his paper while Lana Ahlberg looks very interested in what Mrs. Headley has to say about typing techniques. \

'Eiglitli grade, ready for new discoveries

~riendsliip important

Eighth grade is a place to discover new things, explore new places, and make new friends. Although every person in eighth grade is unique, they all share the same qualities. They are responsible people who are eager to learn, and are also willing to take on any challenge.

Friendship is important to eighth graders. They respect themselves, each other, and their teachers. Each one is aware of their own abilities.

Eighth graders are ready to move on. They have a desire to be successful, and they want to accomplish their goals.

Seventli gratfe, new beginnings

Curious, enthusiastic, fen at {uncli!

Some say that seventh grade is just another grade higher than the one before. Well maybe it is, but just like every grade, there's something special about it.

Seventh grade is a year full of new beginnings. It's the start of a fast paced life in junior high.

Some of the beginnings are fun. There are new friends to get acquainted with, new classses, new teachers, and dances to go to that everyone enjoys. Some of the experiences may also be hard work. There is more homework, lockers to open, and racing the bell to class.

As one teacher said it so well, "This class of seventh graders is full of energy and ready to get busy! My advice to them is to listen to your teachers and do your work; you'll find you still have time for fun. "

Unfamiliar tasks (top left) Our fellow Olympians, Bryan Dougherty and Ben Brouwer, check out their locker combination . Jumping for heart (top right) Matt Almquist raises money for the American Heart Association while having fun jumping rope. "Tttthhhat's all folks" (middle left) Mike Biteler wears a porky pig mask on Halloween. Clogging her way into the hearts of everyone (middle right) Erin Bacon shows wit with a modern style of dancing as Ms. Graves' and Mrs Eischeid's English classes watch. Trying something new (bottom) Seventh graders Jessica Cutshall and Katrina Hejsek try the bikes in the new fitness room here at Goodrich.

Seventh Grade

"The seventh graders are curious. My hope for them is that they would be curious about wisdom, honor, integrity, peace, technology, cooperation, and concern ,and not curious about drugs, sex, or crime."

Rightside up, upside down (top left) Chris Blanco and Jeff Bishop choose pictures for their upside-down artist drawing in Mrs. Cochnar's Exploratory Art class. YI new out{ooK,, a new perspective

'Workjng together mates (joodricli great

Since my arrival at Goodrich I have been most impressed with the friendliness of the students and staff. During the first week of school many students walked up and introduced themselves; that impressed me and continues to impress visitors to the building.

I have also been impressed with the way the teachers work together in teams. They are able to talk about students, their progress and their needs, and they have worked together on interdisciplinary units that are interesting. I am aware of many activities and units that are creative learning experiences. I am also pleased that so many activities reach out into the community; people outside of the school need to be aware of the excellent things going on here.

Any accomplishments that have occurred since I arrived have been possible because of the efforts of the students, staff, and parents. This year the roles of the Student Council, PTA, and Teacher Advisory Council have all changed. All three groups have been given more responsibility in making decisions that affect the school. Students are currently working on a Student Bill of Rights, teachers are working on a Team Handbook, a committee of students, teachers, and parents are . working on a Mission statement, and we have just developed a building Progress Report Form.

My goal for Goodrich would be that we continue to have students, teachers, and parents work together to make Goodrich a great school.

Faculty

'Tonacf<t 9'&,6raskP, 'Teacher of tlie ~ear

Mrs. De Tonack, Teacher Coordinator, is the Nebraska Teacher of the Year. Each state winne r receives a $1000 stipend and a trip whereby all state winners have an opportunity to meet each other. The application for the award includes letters of reference, a description of the teaching career, a description of teacher involvement in professional and community activities, and the teacher's essays on educational issues and philosophies.

Lifetime lessons Value yourself, set your goals and work to attain them, work hard and treat others the way you would like to be treated, always do your best and never settle for anything less than that.

SCIP Intervention .91.ward

SCIP stands for School Community Intervention Program. This program was developed by LPSOO and Lincoln Medical Foundation to provide a way to help those students who make poor choices and find themselves involved with chemical addiction. The program assists many students and gives them a second chance at being successful in school, graduating and becoming a productive member of society. The program takes the combined effort of the community, school, and parents to be successful.

Six Goodrich staff members were selected for · the SCIP award. (picture at left, left to right) Jill Hoover, Valerie Hubbard-Harris, Jeane Loos, Dalene Ballou, Coordinator, Cathy Rauch, and Nancy Bare.

"I feel proud of their determination and accomplishments."

Coach Friesen

Goodrich sports and a winning tradition lives on. The Girls Varsity Volleyball team took the city championship in the 1991-92 season. They represent the Goodrich spirit in our school. By working together with determination and a drive to win, the volleyball team overcame their obstacles just like each of us in our every day lives strive to succeed. The Goodrich sports program has a tradition of excellence and with this year's athletes, that tradition will live on for years to come. Sports

The purpose of the Student Council at Goodrich is to foster leadership in the school and community, to promote pride and spirit in the school, and encourage communication between students and administration. Student Council is made up of five members from each grade and are elected by their peers.

Some activities that were sponsored by Student Council are: Fall Fest, which included Spirit Week, a can drive and a dance to benefit the City Mission, and Spring Break '92. The Student Council purchased a juice machine and baby-sat the teachers' children for Valentine's Day. The Student Council also volunteered at the City Mission during Thanksgiving.

The goals of this course are to produce and present two plays and to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and basic skills in speaking and acting. Students gain a better self-concept and a relaxed sense of being while speaking or acting in front of a large group. Four students entered the Nebraska Optimists Oratorical Contest. Plays presented this year were: "Christmas at the O.K. Corral" by Patsy Miller and Cheryl Thurston, and "The Littlest Elf" by Frances B. Watts.
