Goodrich Junior High is almost like a miniAmerica; its diverse staff and students make s it as unique and distinct as this great country of ours. Each student and staff member i s • special in his or her own way. And all contribute to making Goodrich the school it is today -a school that takes pride in educating the leaders of tomorrow.

This page represents life at Goodrich and symbolizes what it means to be a Goodrich Olympian.

The 1987-88 Bicentennial Yearbook has been dedicated to Mr. Stuart Friesen, a long-time teacher at Goodrich, and a lifetime resident of Nebraska.

Mr. Friesen was born in Henderson, Nebraska, where his father served as superintendent of schools. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Friesen, live in Henderson.

Mr. Friesen feceiv.ed his undergraduate degree from Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas, and a Masters degree from UNL in mathematics. He has taught at Goodrich for 19 years. Mr. Friesen teaches mathematics, computer classes, and coaches basketball, volleyball and track.

The Friesens have two children; Greg, 14, an eighth grade student at Irving, and Lisa, 17, a junior at Lincoln High. Mr. Friesen's wife, Marietta, creates stained glass windows in a local business firm.

Time off at their family cabin near Crete is a favorite pastime for the Friesen family. Mr. Friesen also collects baseball cards and plays softball when time permits. Most students and staff at Goodrich are aware of his sense of humor, and the Yearbook staff fell right into his hands when they asked him what he enjoyed most about teaching at Goodrich. He replied, ''Filling out questions for the Yearbook staff:'' Congratulations, Mr. Friesen. We are .proud of ou!

On November 4, 1987, over 900 Goodrich Junior High seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students and staff attended an important Bicentennial Celebration in the school auditorium honoring our country. Also attending were Superintendent of the Lincoln Public Schools, Dr. Philip Schoo, and School Board President, Mrs. Cathie Petsch. Like many other Americans across the United States, Goodrich participated in celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States of America. The main event of the Goodrich assembly was the presentation of the United States flag; it was presented to Dr. Schoo and Mrs. Petsch by Student Council president, Heidi Schmidt. The flag had been flown over the United States capitol on September 17, 1987, the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.

To help commemorate this great event, the theme of the 1987-1988 yearbook is, very appropriately, a Bicentennial Celebration saluting our constitution.

On the following pages, Goodrich students and staff have expressed their feelings about what it means to be an American. These essays and poems communicate what the future leaders of the United States think about their freedom. They express themselves very eloquently, relating their vision of the true meaning of freedom. The 1987-1988 Yearbook Staff wa.7.ted these free individuals in our own school to express themselves as Americans, and to affirm that the Bill of Rights has preserved their freedom, and that the Constitution lives even today, for all of us.

Therefore, the Yearbook Staff of 1987-1988, presents to you, We the People, a special book of remembrance for the students and staff of Goodrich Junior High. All of you, staff and stud~nts of Goodrich, are, We the People.

merica has long been one of the most powerful natio in the world. The ideal of having a democratic fre e society has led America to influence people throughout the world. Consequently, America has a divers e society that works together for a common goal; freedom .

In this great country of ours freedom guarantees life, liberty , and the pursuit of happiness. These three things allow individuality. Some people may take their freedom for granted but the large majority of citizens in the United States lov e their country; they understand how lucky they are to live here. America is where millions come each year to escape different types of oppression. This wonderful country of ou rs accepts them with open arms.

No matter how bad things seem or how much trouble· we have, we will always have what most countries will never have and that is freedom! And , always , the hope that thin gs can be changed.

o me America stands for freedom. I have the freedom of making my own choices. I can't be forced against my own will to do something that I don't want to do. I can vote for my own leader when I'm old enough.

I just sat down to write this after spending Christmas with my family. If I lived in another country my relatives might be fighting in some other land. America may have its faults, but we are trying hard to make it a better country.

In America every person has the right to an education and a better life. We help those who are less fortunate than us . We just signed a treaty to eliminate some missiles to help create world peace.

In my opinion, America is truly the land of opportunity. ,

America is freedomFree to love, speak, And show that we care.

We take freedom for granted

We aren't mindful enough of countriesThat don't have our freedom

America is self-centered!

We hear what we want to hear; Do we care as much as we should?

We can support world peace and Bring back the meaning of peace!

Tell me, please, what is peace?

America hears the cries of people Who have waited, trusting in us, Have we waited long enough?

We are the privileged ones!

We make America what it is. We are America, and proud to be.

merica! We hear it every day. But, what does it mean besides the country we live in? To me Ameri ca means getting a good education to have a good li fe in the future, providing food and shelter for t he homeless, and helping other people cope with their problems In America we have freedom of speech; we have the freedo m to speak our feelings to one another in public, we have the rig ht to vote, and we choose our own President and other representativ es in our government.

In America, we are sometimes called the land of the free and the home of the brave. But why aren't we free from drugs, alcohol and other abuses? It is each individual in America who has the choice to stop these abuses. Together we can say no!

When my family came to America from Mexico, we thought that the people here wouldn't be fair. But we were wrong. America is a wonderful place to live in and people are fair!

America is beautiful in many ways.

reedom! I think we all take it for granted. There is an old profound statement; ''You do not know wh t you have until it is gone.'' Perhaps if we no long er had freedom we would notice it a little more. Th is is what America means to me - freedom. Freedom to u se your talents to support yourself rather than be stuck with a job you hate because of economic or political pressure. f course, there are people in America in this situation, butt e freedom is there if you fight hard enough for it.

America also keeps the most restless soul occupied. There is an endless variety in America. Whether you're flying jet at Mach II or relaxing in the peaceful countryside of Vermon , it's all th~re for you. So to me, America also means livi g life at your own pace.

But, most importantly, to me America means home. Regardless of all its faults, I still take pride in this natio . And, if it came down to it, I would die to preserve thi country. Now the vital question; would you?
