Memories of ninth g raders in. th~

Ninth graders should feel good about what they've done this year. Goodrich and the teachers will never forget what this years' ninth graders did for this school.

We surveyed twenty ninth graders. Several of the answers for favorite singing groups were Foreigner, J. Giles Band, Rolling Stones, AC / DC, Styx. Glee, P .E., Student Assistant, and Band are some of the favorite classes.

Underclassmen

Eighth Graders have much potential, talent,

Both of our Administrators; Dr. Lyle Bargman and Mr. Royce Holtgrewe agreed that the eighth grade class shows a definite sense of leadership.

In one of the English classes, taught by Ms. Stephanie Lawson, the eighth graders read the books; The Red Pony, The Light in the Forest, and To Kill a Mockingbird. "They were full of surprises but its been a great year," said Mrs. Lawson.

In eighth grade Health the students did CPR, as part of a Red Cross First Aid unit. Mrs. Knaub is encouraging her students to get physically fit by doing a fitness project each quarter.

All in all its been a good year for the eighth gr;aders.

A few glimpses of 7th grad

Some of the things that played a big part in the seventh graders lives this year were roller skating, the rubik cube, being with friends, sports, and video games.

"Le crayon est jaune," which means the pencil is yellow in French, was added to their vocabulary as it was the first year they could take a foreign language. Other electives are foods, clothing, art, glee, band, world of manufacturing, and science.

school life - in '81-'82

A Wrinkle in Time and Pushcart War were two of the books they enjoyed reading in their Basic Studies class. Their other required classes are reading, math, and physical education.

According to Mrs. Luella Sandquist, the seventh grade counselor, "this year's seventh graders are smart and really neat kids." She "loves them!"

The sixth graders had a great first year!

The sixth graders really enjoyed their first year at Goodrich. It was a great experience for them. There are four required classes: Math, Science, Physical Education and Basic Studies. Basic Studies was divided into four themes: Geography, Anthropology, Sociology and Economics. While studying Greek and Roman mythology in several classes they enjoyed Ambrosia, the drink of the Gods. In Science, the sixth graders studied the human body, and plants.

The counselers said that the sixth grader s did a great job adjusting to junior high. Their enthusiasm will keep Goodrich going strong. Mr. Holtgrew finds that the sixth graders are energetic, and apprehesive about coming to Goodrich. The thing that amazes Mr. Holtgrewe is that he can't tell the sixth graders from the seventh graders. Mr. Holtgrewe said that he really likes the sixth graders.

This year was a very good year for football. The Freshman team for Lincoln High did especially well this year. The Heavyweight team took first in the city with a record 5-1, and the Lightweight team took second with a record of 3-3.

This year the Flag Football team had a special person on their team. Tereasa Andreasen was the only girl on the team. She even made the winning touchdown against Lefler.

The Cross Country team also did well, as they were the host for all the meets.

This was a great year for the Goodrich Girls Varsity Volleyball team. They tied for third in city with a record of 4-4. Mr. Hoyt said the team was the most improved team he's had at Goodrich. The team showed "much improvement from start to finish." The Girls Reserve team had a record of 2-6. The Seventh and Eighth Grade Volleyball teams showed a lot of determination and they had a lot of fun playing the game.

The Basketball team this year did fairly well. The Ninth grade Varsity had a record of 4-4. They showed a lot of determination. The Reserves won two games and lost six. The Seventh and Eighth grade did very well with the Eighth grade undefeated. Mr. Hoyt commenting on the Eighth grade said, "they showed a lot of potential for next year."

This year in Wrestling the teams did fairly well. The Ninth grade were 5-'3 and sixth in the city. Most of the Seventh and Eighth graders had a lot of dedication. "There was low attendance but they did a good job," says Coach Swanson. The Coaches both said they saw that the Wrestlers learned and developed a lot of skills.

Overall, the girls had a pretty good se~son. The Ninth Grade Varsity lost their first four games by close margins and then came back to beat the top team in the city, Irving, finishing the season at 4-4. The reserves didn:t do as well as the Varsity but they worked hard to earn a 2-6 record.

Many records were broken in the basketball season. Becky Polivka now has the most points in one game-28-and she also made the most field goals in one game. Not only did individuals break records but the team scored the most points63-against Dawes.

The 7th and 8th Graders had even better records than the 9th grade r s ending up the season for the 7th graders at 3-1, and the 8 th graders in a terrific season of 4-0.

Red Cross

Many students participated in Health Careers Club. Field trips included horseback riding in Pioneers Park, visits to the Regional Center, Saint Elizabeth's, roller skating at the Holiday Roller Rink, a special dinner at the Commercial Bank for the elderly, and a tour of the University of Nebraska guided by Nebraska quarterback Mark Mauer.

Members of Red Cross were kept busy selling donuts to finance tuition to a summer ·camp. Profits were also donated to charity groups. One member stated she liked helping needy people and enjoyed participating in Red Cross. Miss Dorothy Dobesh was the sponsor for Red Cross this year.

Health Careers

The purpose of the 25 mile club is for students to improve their cardiovascular system. One student, Michelle Walkinshaw, not only ran 25 miles, but an incredible 75 miles, and is now striving to reach the 100 mile mark. The students have noticed the improvement in their health and some have lost some weight.
