It ' s Been An Exciting Year For Ninth Grade

As 1975-1976 progressed, the ninth graders did a lot of things together.

In January, there was the campout at Ashland which was sponsored by Mr. Scott Wille and Mr. Kent Swanson. During the year were dances and in Feburary came the crowning of the King and Queen. This was the most exciting part of ninth grade.

We also had the German Garden in March which proved to be very

interesting

According to Mr. Chuck Evans , ninth grade counselor, "The ninth graders were a good bunch of kids both athletically and accademically. They showed a lot of leadership. II

He also said the class was looke d up to by other members of the school. "They need to keep up the image but not let it go to their heads. 11

Eighth Graders Almost To The Top

Eighth graders are almost to the top. In the fall when school starts again, they'll show they've almost made it. ,Ninth grade is great, but you'll always remember the friends and memories of the past years at Goodrich.

There were field trips to the Health Department and to Mead, Nebraska. In Social Studies, Mrs. Jan Rogers' class played the game Ellis Island. The room was set up in such a way that students had to enter like immigrants. They had to pass a Health test as well as other immigrant tests.

'{'hey also played a game called Ba Fa, Ba Fa. This game was played with two groups adopting different cultures. The groups

then tried to discover forms of communication pertaining to their culture.

Of course there were the usual term papers, which proved to be a new experience for eighth graders.

Those who survived all this and did a really good job were selected as eighth grade All Stars. These students were chosen on the basis of being good citizens, grades, and those who got their work done on time. All Stars received a special privilege and all went roller skating as a group.

Finally, the eighth graders are approaching their final year at Goodrich. A lot of them are looking forward to the ninth grade

Seventh Graders Complete Fun And Eventful Year

Hiding in a "bomb" shelter in Mrs. Ann Brill's class was just one of the different activities done in the seventh grade. As they were blindfolded and crowded in the corners, the students probably wished they were out in the crowded halls of Goodrich.

For Black Heritage Week they wrote reports on famous Black people. During the year, they also did research and reported on different

countries throughout the world. Out of school the seventh graders visited the State Capitol whic h proved to be an interesting experience for them.

As in previous years they read "The Pushcart War, " and " The Christmas Carol. " They also studi ed Greek and Roman myths.

As the year comes to a close the seventh graders are looking forward to their third year at Goodric h

Beginning Of Junior High Brings New Experiences

Working with different teachers all day was just one of the things different for sixth graders who attended Goodrich this year. Although they were able to contribute to some of the regular activities like the Flea Market, they got to try out a few new things too.

A system of rotating to seven different learning statiom gave the sixth graders a chance to work with many of the different Basic Studies

teachers and a lot of different students. Map skills was a subject in which the sixth grade did a lot of work along with emphasis on writing paragraphs.

A special activity this year was a presentation on whales in the Arctic.

With all their new experiences the sixth graders are looking forward to many new activities in the seventh grade.

Teacher Corp

Goodrich added a new program to the agenda this year. It was called Teacher Corp.

The project included in its goals: staff development, increasing the relationship between the school and community and to give aid and support to the teachers and services already here. The staff included four resource teachers along with five other members, Dr. Bargman and two secretaries.

Teacher Corp is a federally funded project and helped to sponsor and support several programs throughout the year.

Janitors

The janitors picked up after all the messes left by students and teachers. By the following day, they always had the school cleaned.

They were around to lend a mop after someone dropped their tray in the lunchroom or to open a door when the keys were locked inside a room.

The janitors always stayed once the last bell had rung and everyone had gone home. They got things in order so the doors could reopen to a clean building the following day.

Cooks

Every morning, the cooks at Goodrich prepared enough food to feed almost 700 people. Their day started at 8:00 a. m. and still lunch was always ready to go when the first person got in line at the beginning of fifth period.

On Christmas and Thanksgiving they even prepared special lunches to help create a holiday atmosphere. During Black Heritage Week a special soul food meal was served.

Thanks to the cooks, no on~ need go without lunch beca.use of a lack of food.

Teacher Aids

Teacher aids proved to be a great help to many teachers. They performed tasks which ranged from keeping an eye on classes to correcting papers.

One aid, Mrs. Belva Zitterkopf, was well known to many students since she was in charge of the nurses office while Mrs. Knaub had classes.

The aids are only one part of the entire system of people who are often unknown to students but are an important part of Goodrich.

Bicentennial Market Aids TA's

It all happened December S, 1975 at the Goodrich Junior High School Bicentennial Flea Market. It was exciting strolling through the streets of Independence, Harriet Tubman Lane, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Black Hawk Road with all their booths and games.

There was everything from shooting down little green army men with a squirt gun to ea ting your way to delicious delights. All proceeds from the activity went to the various TA groups to help sponsor planned outings.

Ready or not, here it comes!

Olympians Have SO's Day In 1976

Fifties day was a big event for most of the people in Goodrich. In other words it was rt::ally "boss." However, there were still a few "nerds" who didn't dress up and join the festivities.

After school, a dance was held in the boys gym. The band "NEXT," provided an hour and a half of lively fifties music. Some of the band members were Goodrich graduates who seemed to enjoy the homecoming.

There were various contests, including the "Fonzie" look alike contest. It was won by sixth grader Pat Kennedy. Other contests included best dressed, best dancers, and a bubble gum blowing contest.

The dance was sponsored by the Student Council.

Valentines Day Assembly Meant

. Time And Effort

The setting was the Goodrich Junior High Valentines assembly. The lights were low and the audience was hushed because the King and Queen were about to be announced.

After the announcement, all that could be heard were happy cheers for the two lucky people -Kathy Tenney and Jeff Barron. They had been chosen by the Class of 1976.

During the afternoon, a lot of good skits were put on by the talented students. The people in them had worked long and hard on their various skits and it all payed off when the assembly came around The assembly was sponsored by Mrs. Donna Culver and Miss Cindy Leffler who both also put in a lot of extra time

The first attendants for the King and Queen were Debi Kennedy and Randee Johnson; second attendants were Julie Fugh and Bryan Horacek; third attendants were Marla Sheets and Barry Keller; and the fourth attendants were Patty Shannon and Les Watermeier.

Miss Cindy Leffler and Mr. Kent Swanson both enjoyed the pies they received.

French Class Proves To Be Fun And Prospe_rous

The annual Goodrich Junior High School Pastry Party and the Mardi Gras were very successful this year The Mardi Gras was quite prosperous bringing in over three hundred dollars. The money that was made from the M-trdi Gras went to the students who participated. The money was used to sponsor a trip to a French restaurant and was also used to purchase a new record player for future French classes

· In Longjohns .

On January 9-11, thirty ninth grade students went to Ashland Army Camp for an orienteering cam pout. Although there wasn't much orienteering, there was a lot of running around in long underwear and striped pajamas.

In one of the early morning hours, the girls decided to have a song and dance raid at the boys barracks. The boys returned with a toilet paper raid at the girls barracks a few hours later.

The weekend was topped off as 21 people crammed into a toilet stall and tried to set a new record. A voice from the crowd screamed, "The toilet's breaking, 11 and both a record and a toilet were broken.

All in all the campout was a lot of fun for everyone.

Performances Were Successful For Drama Clas s es

This year the Goodrich drama class put on quite a few performances, two of which were spoiled by the rudeness of the student audiences. The "Cracker Barrel Circus" and "The Lottery" which were both put on at night, turned out to be very successful. This years drama class was led by first year teacher, Miss Cindy Leffler.

It has been discovered that

Sue McCord, Kirk Down, Don Kinlin, and Mike Brown perform in Hidden Star. "
Mark Vetter, as Sebatian Skinflint, has been fixing the books of the General Store in "The Cracker Barrell Circus. "

Bicycle Club

Bicycle Club is headed by its founder, Mr, Mitch Zeman. He said it is made up of people who want to have fun, and its purposes are to promote bicycle safety, encourage people to ride bikes and to learn to take care of them.

This year they rode to Pioneers Park on the new bicycle route at Antelope Park and to Air Park-among other places. They also wrote letters to the Mayor and the City Council to encourage them to build a shoulder along 14th Street so it would be safer for riders peddling from Belmont to downtown.

Yearbook Staff

The OLYMPIAN Staff is made up of select ninth graders with a three or above average in English. A yearbook is a reference book of memories. It contains faces of students and lists different activities that happened during the year. Every staff member was in charge of something which benfited the final outcome of the book. Yearbook is headed by Miss Cindy Leffler.

Rocket Club

The Model Rocketry Science is headed by Mr. Hugh McDermott, who works with Teacher Corps. It is a club in which seventh and eighth grade boys explore some of the different dimensions of rocketry and they look into the phenomenon of UFO's. They visited the University of Nebraska planetarium, an observatory in Mead, Nebraska, Nebraska Air National Guard and some UFO shows. The boys also made some rockets themselves.

Health Careers

The Health Careers Club is a club in which eighth and ninth graders investigate different health occupations. Each month they visit a health related institution. Some of the places they visited were the Harris Lab, Bryan Hospital's Coronary Care Center, Shurtliff Ambulance Company and the Dorsey Lab.

The club sponsor is Mrs. Betty Knaub, nurse and health teacher. The parent sponsor is Mrs. Virginia Gallentine.

Student Council

The Student Council is an organization made up entirely of students elected by the members of their class. Its main goal primarily is to organize activities for students and have programs for the benefit of the school.

This year Student Council was made a class. Its members learned how to conduct meetings and how to plan activities for the school. This year they raised funds to buy a stereo for the dances, had a canned food drive for charities, organized dances, and had periodical current movies.

Newspaper Staff

This year the newspaper staff made dramatic changes in the paper. They made it distinctively a "newspaper. " They decided to name it the TORCH to distinguish it from the yearbook and yet stay within Olympian tradition. It is the staffs job to publish one issue a month. The newspaper reports tn students the happenings of Goodrich and the surrounding community in addition to providing entertainment.

Newspaper students rotate staff positions every month. The journalism class is headed by Miss Cindy Leffler.

Vocal Groups

The Small Groups are made up of seventh, eighth and ninth grade girls who took vocal music and tried out for the various groups. Each grade has its own small group" and they practice on regularly scheduled mornings or in the afternoon. They perform at school programs and festivals and have also performed outside of school.

Lincoln High Freshman Swimming

T earn A Success

According to Boni Tesla, the ninth grade swimming ieam "had a fun season although it was hard work." Each weekday the girls went to Lincoln High and practiced for an hour and one half with other ninth graders in the Lincoln High district.

The team entered three meets against Northeast, East, and Southeast and a city meet which included all four schools. The team came in fourth in the city with each girl performing well. Those placing were: Kelli Cakl, second in butterfly; Shirlee Brooks, third in free style; Tammy Hendrickson, third in butterfly; and Boni Tesla third in backstroke.

"The biggest problem, " Kelli Cakl said, "was due to the lack of people on the Lincoln High team. We were often out numbered by the other high schools 4-1."

Small Team For Cross Country This Year

"The cross country team didn't do so well this year, " said Kent Swanson, coach. "It was due to the lack of members on the team."

Members of the team were: Cindy Scaggs and Vicki Scheidt.

Vicki started out the season with a bad knee · which got worse as the season continued. Cindy was the only person to enter· in the meets. She was unable to place since standings are kept on a team basis rather than individual.

Cindy Scaggs runs as a one-woman cross country team.

Girls Varsity And Reserve Basketball Team

The ninth grade varsity basketball team ended with a great season as they came in third in the city. The season started with a first game loss to Culler.

As season went on they rallied back to win seven of nine games.

Coach Scott Wille commented that the girls had a lot of talent but didn't bring it out and play to their fullest potential.

The reserve basketball team had a losing season this year. They won only three of nine games.

According to coach, Mrs. Ann Brill, "The trouble seemed due to poor shooting and rebounding during the games. The girls were good at defensive zoning and were great at holding the other teams scoring. "

Gridders Have Variety Of Seasons

The ninth grade football team had a hard season due to early losses from injuries on and off the field Nkere Udofia (broken elbow), Randee Johnson (separated shoulder), and Bryan Horacek ( cut foot and slight head concussion) to name a few.

Very strong Northeast, Southeast, and East defensive units made it hard for the Links to make many points. Season records were

Varsity (1-4) and Reserves (1-3-1 J. Seventh and eighth grade flag football teams had a good season. Like many previous teams, they set a fine example of school spirit.

There were three teams for each grade, all doing a spectacular job as shown by their statistics. Eighth grade team A ( 3-1 ), B (4-0), C(3-1). Seventh grade team A(4-0), B(4-0), C(7-0).

Boys ·Basketball Teams Had A Variety Of Seasons

The Goodrich winning streak brought the ninth grade boys varsity basketball team an undefeated season of 9-0. They were the first basketball team in the history of Goodrich to take first in city.

Coach, Stuart Friesen, when asked if this was Goodrich's best basketball team ever answered, 11Definately. 11

They also broke four out of six basketball team records in the school. Randee Johnson also broke four out of the possible six individual records.

The ninth grade boys reserve basketball team for 75- 76 had a losing season this year. They won three out of nine games against junior high schools in Lincoln. One game was a forfeit by Whittier.

Comments made by some of the Olympian players included "The other players were generally taller," (Mark Vetter); and, "We could have taken city. We had good players but we just couldn't get it together, 11 (Barry Keller). The highest individual point accumilation in one game was by Vetter and Keller who tallied with 16 points each in separate games. Season record for the junior varsity team ended at three wins and two losses.

Seventh and eighth grade basketball team members had excellent seasons for 1976. A perfect 4-0 record marked the eighth grade team while both the seventh graaers ended 3-1. Outstanding

players, according to Coach Friesen, were Bill Szalawiga and Jeff Johnson. Top members of the seventh grade teams were Rocky Chadd and Terry Roth.

Good Season For Boys Gymnastics

The ninth grade boys gymnastics team had a great season this year. The team competed in four meets. These included district and city meets both in which the Olympians took first place.

It was the first time in Goodrich's history that a ninth grade boys athletic team has been city champions. Members of the team scored a total of 99. 70 points over Culler. Les Watermeier played a big role in the city meet when

he came in fourth as an all- around gymnast in Lincoln with a score of 27. 10.

Seventh and eighth grade boys gymnastics teams also had a fine season considering the fact that the seventh grade team had only one member (Gayle Adams). The eighth grade team had only three members. Despite this, both teams often took five of the seven possible firsts and many other unrecorded seconds and thirds.

Ninth Grade Wrestlers ''Could Have Done B,etter''

"The wrestling team was a good one but it could have been better, " said Mike Larsen, a member of the ninth grade wrestling squad. Larsen and two other team members also thought the team as a whole needed to be more aggressive, practice harder, and try harder.

Mr. Hugh McDermott, an aid to the wrestling team, thought the people on it had a good chance to take city. Both McDermott and Mr. Kent Swans on, head coach, were disappointed about the small number of people that were on the team.

Despite their good chance to take city they didn't fare well. Goodrich had only two people in the finals-- Ty Seeger and Mike Larsen--but neither won first place.
