Dawes Middle School has lost a leader and an educator. Dawes principal, Ms. Carmel Sheppard, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2005. She was more than just a principal though, she was a great listener and a friend to the "underdogs". She would hug you for no reason and . always had a big, bright smile on her face. She loved her stu _ dents about as much as she loved Kansas State and she would show that love and compassion for them everyday. She definitely had an influence on this S()hool, its students and staff. Whether it would be to raise our MAT scores, to always do the best with what you have, or to be a l(ansas State fan. She touched the lives of many in numerous ways.
"These wonderful personal qualities of Carmel--energy, enthusiasm, humor, the ability to be a friend to many--could have led her in most any direction. Those of us who are here today are grateful that th ey led her first to education, and then to Lincoln, Nebraska. We all know that Carmel had great passion for students and their learning; she saw education as a way of opening doors to whatever future you wanted to create. And it was more than a belief for her, it was also her own life experience."

Ms. Sheppard made her mark here at Dawes. For anyone that knew her well, knows that she would be here encouraging everyone with every step and decision that they make. •And always with a big smile on her face.

Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve. -Mary Kay Ash
