After teaching 34 years, 25 of those in Lincoln, Mr. Kenneth Freese is going to retire at the end of the 19 77-19 7 8 school year.
Mr. Freese started out working in a New Hampshire shoe factory but decided his sole wasn't in it. He then came to Nebraska and enrolled at Wesleyan (left). He spent one year teaching at Long Pine (below), before being drafted into World War II . The army immediately recognized his musical talents and handed him a bugle (right) .
When Mr. Freese returned from the war with callous on lip and bugle under arm, he again taught in schools in several small towns. After he had gone back to school and received a Master's Degree, he was superintendent at Murdock (below).
But now the city beckoned and Mr. Freese came to Lincoln to teach instrumental and vocal music at Northeast Jr. High. When Culler was built, he came to our hallowed halls where he has remained as music director ever since.
IMr. Freese has done every thing from playing string bas · in combos to repairing rail road tracks ( which goes t < show he doesn't have a om track mind!) His hobbies in elude golf, bowling , reading and watching T.V.
Mr. Freese has gained re spect from faculty and student alike, and so we proudly <led icate the 1977-1978 yearboo l to Mr. Kenneth Freese.

Student Council is the voice of the student body. This year the Culler Student Council attempted to reach all the students through many varied projects.
The student body was encouraged to take an interest in their school through a "Winter Windows Contest". Students decorated the hall windows to brighten up the school. Winners of the "group" category were: Sheri Johnson and Debra Buchholz (first place) and Jill Duncan and Barbara Gerber (second place). Winners in the "individual" category were: Curtis Chuda (first place) and Russ Bates (second place).
Other projects included chairs for the newly redecorated library and a Faculty Breakfast to promote better faculty/ student relationships. The Council also made a scrapbook of all their projects, minutes, notes and other materials to pass on to the student councils of future years.

•Red Cro ss
The Red Cross, although it was small this year, worked very hard at improving our school.
The group sponsored such projects as "Send A Kiss" for Valentine's Day and the Gumball Guessing Contest, in which Kevin Schierman was the winner. They also went to the Cerebral Palsy Center to help file pledges after the telethon.
Mrs. Becker sponsored the group and the officers were Anna Stewart and Susie Semin.

-Chess Club
The Culler Chess Club was organized this year under the direction of Mr. Letheby. The Student Council purchased chess sets for the group. Because chess club in the junior high was a new activity in the Lincoln Public Schools, the members had no chance to compete against other schools. They did compete with each other in the club, learning the rules and developing strategies.

Dances
This year at Culler there were four dances: Denim Dance, Winter Dance , Spring Dance , and Promotion Dance. At the Denim Dance, the faculty and students especially enjoyed the Bunny Hop. One of the most popular events at the Winter D ance was the dance contest. Susan Zentic and Susan Duncan won the couples ' contest and Linda Shepard won the singles ' contest. At the Promotion Dance, the ninth graders remembered their days at Culler through tears of sadness at leaving friends and tears of happiness for the good times together the last three years.

Drama
People in Drama I classes worked to develop ir • dividual skills and to communicate with other These classes also presented original skits for t r school at the end of the semester. Drama II st t • dents worked on increasing dramatic and techn cal skills. They had an opportunity to perfo n for different groups such as elementary schoo and rest homes.
The instrumental music classes offer challenge to any instrumental student at Culler through St a ge Band , orchestra and bands at various levels. The music classes and programs are a very important part of the curriculum at Culler because, as Mr. Freese says , " Music is something the students can use and enjoy all their lives."
Concerts
Throughout the year, many music concerts are presented at Culler Junior High. The vocal concerts are under the direction of Mrs. Kaltenberger and the instrumental concerts are under the c;iirection of Mr. Freese.
Twenty-five percent of Culler's students are enrolled in vocal music. The students' favorite vocal concert is always the Rock Concert which was held February 21. The ninth grade students enjoyed a trip to Omaha this year where they attended an opera.
Who's Who
The Culler Yearbook Staff would like to recognize these students for outstanding achievement outside of school.
Right, Teresa Scherer and Kim Kaufman were two of ten dancers selected to perform in the production of '·Jesus Christ Superstar". The very popular play was produced by the Community Playhouse and was sold out for every performance.
