Bryan Community 2007-2008
Let's face it. One of the biggest concerns of teachers and crazes with students is technology. More than ever, Bryan Community students own iPods, mp3 players, cell phones, and Bluetooth headsets. A teacher who checks out the laptops to do research, writing, and presentation of information often finds students who are searching for music, videos, and email Trying to temper students' insistence (or addiction) to gaming, texting , talking, and a constant stream of music and video is a challenge.
Students of the 2007-2008 Bryan Community have been called Generation Next and the MySpace Generation. Research by the Pew Research Center found that this generation uses "technology and the internet to connect with people in new and distinctive ways. Text messaging, instant messaging and email keep them in constant contact with friends ...They are the "Look at Me" generation. Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and MyYearbook allow individuals to post a personal profile complete with photos and descriptions of interests and hobbies. A majority of Gen Nexters have used one of these social networking sites, and more than four-in-ten have created a personal profile." (2007, The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press)
MySpace, while not used by all students, is the ''motherload" of all things appealing to teens; social networking, video, music, and more. Hence, IT MUST BE BLOCKED1 Teens and adults cannot stop themselves and school is not the place to access this stuff. But wait! I'm sure I just saw a student on MySpace! PROXIES! This year's yearbook is named BrySpace, not to fly in the face of the problems of MySpace but to recognize that students of the 2007-2008 Bryan Community are probably touched by technology. It's a tough environment. It is full of legal and ethical questions - what content is copyrighted or considered intellectual property? How do we prevent cyber bullying as well as keeping students safe? Is there a way to motivate students using technology?
As Peter Parker of Spiderman said it, "'w'ith great power comes great responsibility." The same ho lds true with technology and its use. Can we use technology and the Internet to motivate, explore, and share ideas? Only you can decide ...
