The Friend of Bryan Scholarship was started In the spring of 2000 by memtiers of the 8ryan Community faff. The scholarship honors those students who have done an outstandlngJob of mastering the Increasingly lfficult academic curriculum. It also recognizes those who have shown perseverance and determination In their reas of Interest and plan to pursue a post secondary education. The purpose of the scholarship Is to encourage tudents to follow any dream they may have that requires them to continues their education.

Every year Bryan recognizes "Gold Star" award winners from our community. This year, we honor senior, Nancy Studey, and teacher, Mara Zigurs, for being important members of the Bryan Community.

Mara Zigurs is a thoughtful and committed Social Worker and caregiver at the Bryan Community. Every day, every hour, she tirelessly listens and advocates for students. Her patience and non-judgemental attitude promote a sense of peace and well-being among all who meet her. Mara has a great sense of humor making her eyes sparkle with good will and laughter. She brings her natural flair and talents to special school events. Whether decorating cakes for students or cooking for a 150, enlivens our school community to make it a better place.

ancy Studey is a young woman with hopes and dreams for the future. Her enthusiasm, zest for life and sincerity help make Nancy a well-rounded. This young woman's challenging life experiences have taught Nancy to become resilient and persevere in spite of overwhelming odds. She has made incredibly tough life decisions with respect and honor. Nancy demonstrates integrity, kindness and a tremendous respect for all human kind. We salute her as a student and for the positive adult she is becoming.

ILICIIOl 1884 Our world as we know it has changed after November 2nd election. Once again George W. Bush is President and Senator John Kerry is left behind in the dust. The war just keeps getting bigger and terrorism isn't stopping. Now the question of "where will you be in ten years?" is left to the future.

was split apart. We worked hard to get young people to vote ano make a difference. But even though more than 1.4 million new young voters registered to vote in this election, the youth block comprised roughly the same percentage of voters that it did four years ago, according to Associated Press exit polls. (Garofoli , Joe Chronicle Staff Writer, Wednesday, November 3, 2004, San Francisco Chronicle) It was hard, but we did accomplis~~our goal. The election was a close one, and in the end, who is to sa~ we got the right man for the job. At Bryan Community, of the students who voted, 65% chose Kerry and 25% chose Bush, with about 16% of the votes going to Nader; each of the Independent candidates received votes, as well.

Bryan Community tried to make people aware of the candidates and get students informed and involved. Posters created in Scott Bendler's classes lined the halls describing the candidates and their stances. They did a great job and I hope young people keep caring about their futures in America. Not only did America change, but Lincoln did to. There is a no smoking ban in Lincoln for all public places. The gambling did not get passed, and thanks to the lottery we will always have a state fair.

The majority said that they would lower troces and focus on the problems here at home. They would stop the war and give better health care and education to those who need it.

s. Bland was a witness and ac ivist in the civil rights movement a the early age of eight. She spoke candidly wtth students about how she felt as a young girl participa ing ·n the planning and execution of civil rights protests in her town, Selma, Alabama. She and her peers played a significant role in bringing about black voter registration. She followed and participated in events organized in their town by Rev. Martin Lu her King, Jr. She marched on "Bloody Sunday' (lower left) at the age of eleven and . was arrested along with other protestors.
