Perceptions of the Bryan Community

There are a majority of people in Lincoln that have heard of the Bryan Community and do not understand the definition of an alternative high school, and do not take the time to learn what we are about. Some people want to just believe what they hear and judge us.
One thing that they do know is that Bryan is a place where students go when they have not been successful at other high schools , but what they do not know is that not a single one of us are failures.
The problem with schools today is that some teachers give up too easily on students. They think that if a student does not come to school for two or three days, their perception is that the students does not want to be in school at all. Most of the time that is not the truth.
At Bryan, students come here to get the help that they didn't receive at their previous high school, and for some of us it is our last chance to do it right. A majority of students have had problems at their previous high school. The concern over these issues pushes them to not come to school at all, and , therefore, may cause them to fail out of all or most of their classes.
The Bryan Community, to me and other students and staff is a place we can call a community, a family. We work together and grow together, and because we have guiding principles that stress respect, our chool is non-violent.
In my personal view, Bryan has been a great experience for me. I have learned so much about myself, I have learned that school is important, and have learned how to overcome obstacle . Before I came here I thought I would never get out of high school, it was always a struggle for me, I had constant problems with other students, and teachers, and I got sick of it so I stopped going, I had given up on everyone. When I fir t came to Bryan ,I had it stuck in my head that I was never going to graduate, but after the week tarted going by I realized that I could graduate, and I could do anything if I put my mind to it.
To me Bryan has been a peaceful and respectful place, and if it was not for my getting enrolled into Bryan, I have no idea where I would be right now. One fact that I do know is that if I would have stayed at my previous high school, I would have been there for another three years or so. I am grateful for everything the staff and students have done for me.
At the Bryan community we go by the guiding principles of LOVE, PEACE, GIVING, COURAGE, AND RESPECT, Each of the principles has its own meaning but to me if I could put them into one word, the word would be UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
The people who make up stereotypes about Bryan do not know what we are about or why we are here , and most importantly these people do not know us as individuals. These people see us as gangsters, drug dealers, and pregnant teenagers, and most of these people look at us as failures because, we have quit our home school.
They do not realize that Bryan is just like any other high school; we do the same amount of work and need the same amount of credits to graduate as everyone else does. Because we do not have homework, does not mean we have it any easier, we just buckle down and get things done in class, so we don't have to worry about taking things home and risk falling behind in our classes. It may seem different but it really is not, we just know what we have to do in order to graduate.
The way I look at these stereotypes is that the people who say these things about our school, do not know anything about us and what we are capable of doing, I wish just for one day some of these people would come and talk with us as individuals, and learn about us and not base everything on what they have heard, I bet they would learn a lot from us and leave Bryan with a totally different perception about our school and the students attending.
We as a community need to remember what Byan is about , and most importantly know why we are here and be proud that we will be graduating So stay strong and do what you've go to do to graduate so you can start building your future and following your dreams.

GOLD STAR
Every year, The Bryan Community recognizes "Gold Star" members of our community. This year, we honored student Adan Martinez, and staff members Earla Karels, Autumn Coudeyras, Monica Asher, Amy Ball, and Carin Sandman.
Adan is a positive asset and role model at Bryan for several reasons. He has modeled perseverance and fortitude by surmounting his Traumatic Brain Injury disability, and achieving academic success. He has been inspired to motivate young people at a local Jr. High by courageously speaking to small groups in the hope of influencing them to make positive life choices. Through his imaginative artwork Adan has stimulated others to create, and through his outstanding character he has exhibited ideals for others to strive for.
The dedicated team of professionals led by Monica Asher serves ixteen babies and toddlers here at Bryan. They work ide by ide with the tudent parent to help establish developmentally appropriate learning goals for children and to trengthen young adult in their role a young parents. Working as an effecti e team they serve as encouragements and teachers, doing their best every day to make a difference.
Congratulations to Adan and the entire daycare taff for their examples of leadership, and excellence in their ongoing efforts to further the great community that is our chool.
