THE BRYAN COMMUNITY 98'-99'
Each six-weeks students leave the Bryan Community and enter the "real world." What do they take with them? They take the knowledge and experience they have gathered from thirteen years of education, the skills they have worked so hard to develop, and the Bryan Guiding Principles: Respect, Love, Giving, Courage and Peace. Most importantly, they leave with a high school diploma.
Bryan is an alternative high school program. We refer to the program as the "Bryan Community," because all the Bryan students desire to live and work in a peaceful, conflict free environment. This is what makes us different:
1) We are housed in a smaller building, with a smaller environment, allowing students and teachers to know each other by first name. No one is invisible here.
2) There is a lower student -teacher ratio.
3) Students earn their diploma through participation and completion of activities, experiences, and projects done during school hours. Bryan students are currently participating in several different service projects to better the community. They include teaching of younger students in the Lincoln Public School system, an "Adopt-a-Mile" program, creating a school sign, conducting voter registration, organizing a day care program, de eloping a school brochure, and designing school t-shirts for students.
Student responsibilities include good attendance, participation in class activities, and most importantly, respect for all students, teachers, faculty members and visitors. Verbal or physical abuse of anyone on campus is not tolerated. What Bryan students can look forward to is a comfortable, hassle free, safe, and enjoyable learning experience. We anticipate entertaining future ser ice projects and the chance to watch our community grow and become a better place fore eryone. We all know that e er day bring u do er to graduation.

The Guiding Principles
Every student that enrolls at Bryan goes through a six-week orientatio n class. The purpose of orientation is to become familiar with Bryan and our guiding principles.

A wide variety of classes are offered to meet the needs, and interests of Bryan students. In reading class, students select books of their choice to read and report upon. Each week students share their love for books by reading to younger students at Lincoln elementary schools.

This year our computer lab was expanded to include ten new computers. In the lab, students learn skills for desktop publishing, basic graphic design, and Internet usage. The computers allow students to do a variety of cool projects. The Internet is a popular resource for students to obtain information for classroom projects and to have contact with people out of s tate and out of the country. One interesting project was called African Quest. Through E-mail correspondence, students communicated daily with a group of scientists traveling through Central Africa.

At Bryan, students have many different options for earning credits. In addition to credit earned through core and electi e courses, students may earn credits through self-directed learning, work-stud y , and Independent Learning. In Independent Learning, people work toward earning credits at their own pace. Students can either work on units from binders or use the computer program, Plato. Working out of the binders involves reading lesson on which students are later tested. Plato offers a wide range of subjects and targets specific skills and levels. It also helps students become familiar with computers. Students may earn one credit per unit and potentially achieve an unlimited number of credits if they are willing to work for them. For students who need assistance, Phyllis is always willing and able to help.
Career class is a semester clas s in which students learn the basics of starting their own business. Students visit local businesses and learn about different methods of business operation. Students also have a chance to job shadow or to work with local businesses or companies as an intern. During an internship, students may earn • credit toward graduation while also developing positive job and life skills.

This year a group of Bryan students formed a Leadership Club. The Leadership club worked together to organize a "Quit Smoking Group." The focus of the support group is to assist Bryan students to stop smoking as well as to educate students about the health hazards o L smoking. In addition to holding weekly support meetings and teaching to elementary studen ts, Bryan students worked with Cablevision to produce a public service announcement about the deadly effects bf smoking. The PSA aired on MTV as well as several other channels. Students also worked to put a stop smoking billboard on "O" street with support from Husker Car Wa sh

Dr. Becky Breed is Bryan's new principal. As an experienced educator, Becky has brought positive leadership to Bryan. Each day, Bryan students and staff are greeted by her warm smile and encouraging words.
Another new addition to Bryan are our proud mothers to be, Cheryl Wilkens and Alysa Lanning.
By Fall of 1999, Bryan students may enjoy their new multimedia center. The new media center will consist of a computer lab, a room for printed materials, as well as a place to relax and read.
To help make our courtyard a more beautiful place to enjoy, students are working with Homebuilders Association to break up the cement and dig a hole for our new fountain. The new courtyard will be filled with many different flowers, a fountain, sculpture, places to sit, and much more.
We Are Opening Our Arms To The Little Ones
ext year we will have a child care facility at Bryan. It will be called the Child-Parent Learning Center. Students attending Bryan are eligible for their child to attend the child care center. Children between the ages of six weeks and three years old may attend. The child care center will allow student-parents and their children to interact during the school day hile student-parents are continuing their education. Each parent will be enrolled in a series of parenting classes. The center is expected to be opened by the fall of 1999. We look forward to this new addition to our community.

At the end of each six weeks, students and staff gather to acknowledge the graduates and to celebrate student accomplishments. All school meetings provide an opportunity for us to look back on the events of the previous weeks and to look ahead to the days to come.

By demonstrating his understanding ~=iii~~ of the Bryan Guiding Principles in a 500 ord essay and inter iew process, Mike earned hi 1985 Ford Tempo.
Bryan's Gold Star Award recipients Amber Smith, Kathy McMillan, and Brian Da idson were chosen by teachers as representatives of our school. Accompanied by teacher, Roger Burris, students will be honored at a banquet at Pershing Auditorium with other students and teachers. Kathy McMillan and Danielle Michon were recognized by teachers and KFRX as "Students of the Week". These students consistently exemplify outstanding leadership qualities as members of The Bryan Community.

Bryan students and teachers would like to acknowledge the support staff that help the Bryan Community to function smoothly everyday. Thanks to: Carol Packard and Theresa Hayes for keeping everything together as the office staff; Family Specialists, Mara Ziegler and Maureen Fowler; Child Guidance Counselor, Kathy Byorth for always being there with a helping hand and an open ear. Special thanks to Sharon Dickerson for ensuring student health as the school nurse. Lunch Time
Well here we are, lunch time again. We all know the drill. The bell rings, most of us scurry off to our cars so we can go and get something to eat. If possible we go to our favorite place. If that doesn't work out, we have to settle for something quick and close. The most popular places to eat are Taco Bell, Valentinos and Amigos. Another favorite is KnickerBockers for their twentyfive cent tacos on Thursday. For others that decide to stick around, da Vinci's pizza and sub sandwiches are always available.
