Bryan Community is a school that many people cannot understand until they experience it for themselves. Bryan is a non-violent school that gives teenagers a second chance at getting an education , instead of settling for the basic G.E.D. Bryan is in a league of its own. Everyone is on a first name basis, and they leave the responsibility of learning and being here on time up to us, the students. The system at Bryan is TRUST! Because of this, some people automatically think that the students here at Bryan are rowdy, disruptive, disrespectful, and never attend class. This is definitely not true. Students here at Bryan are just the opposite. We are active in school, and we respect the people around us, especially for giving us a second chance.
We, the students, are here at Bryan because we want to be, not because we have to. I quit going to school because of the feelings of stress and
rejection from other high schools. We were fed up with the whole school system, so we gave up. Well, Bryan is here to help us get on our feet and back on track.
My name is Sarah Lawrence. Before I came to Bryan I was bored with school; I was
never there; I didn't want to be there. I wanted to graduate, but I didn't want to put out the effort it would take to actually graduate. I wanted school to be over with, but it wouldn't have been over for a while. I was so stressed over prerequisite classes and credits that I freaked out and quit school. Yes, I took the "easy" way out, I QUIT! I'm not proud to state that, but I
did. Thank goodness for Barb Peterson. She helped me realize that I need to finish school. At first I was a little reluctant about going back to school, so they enrolled me into Independent Learning with Phyllis Guzman
a class that combines journalism, computers, and yearbook. Block classes are 2 hours long and skillbuilder is similar to the length of traditional classes-SO minutes. Skillbuilder is a class where you build skills in reading, writing, leadership, and math. The p.m. block is like the a.m. block except different classes are offered.
(Independent Learning is where you work individually on units or on the computer for credits.) Phyllis was a great help. She made me feel comfortable coming back to school, and she taught me everything I needed to know about Bryan. Independent Learning is the program that is helping me graduate on time. Don't get me wrong; my other classes help, like my a.m. block. That is the class that gives me the most credit. It is
Bryan is a very casual, laid back school. It's different because of teachers who respect you, believe in you, and treat you like a person-not like a student with no potential. I would have to give total respect to all the Bryan staff for believing in us, for giving us a second chance, and most of all for being our friends. Thanks.
Dear Students,
It seems like just yesterday it was the first day of school. We have all come a long way since then. We have survived incompletes, assignments, and skits at the all-school meeting. Through it all we have become much more than students and teachers, we have become a community of people who care for and about one another.
Some of us will return to Bryan next year to start anew, some of us won't. You all have left a part of yourself here and will take a part of Bryan with you. We ask that you remember to not let what you think you cannot do influence you in what you can do. If you can imagine it, you can do it. If you can dream it, you can become it.
John Heinke works hard as a manager at Valentino's To Go. We have many other students who are also employed by Valentino's.
Bobbi Kramer is the shift supervisor while her friend Lena Pumel works as a delivery person for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Several other students from Bryan also work at KFC.
Eric Foster works with his brother at Canine Consultant to train dogs. He trains them for obedience and for protection.

During this time we have a chance to eat while visiting with our friends. We also have the choice to make up time for any class absence, if the teacher is available at that time.

My first day at Bryan was pretty neat. I got there and found that I knew a lot more people than I thought I would. That made it easier to adjust to a new school. There were small classes, usually two teachers, no homework, and no fights or arguments. Everyone got along.
Another thing I saw on the first day, and throughout the whole year, is that the students that attend Bryan are smart. Before I came here people told me that students that went to Bryan were trouble makers and not that smart. But when I started to go here, I knew that it wasn't true. There were classes like computers, math, art, writing, construction, PE/Health, etc. Classes like I had at my traditional high school. Just by being here, you know that stu/ dents are having fun and learning at Bryan.

( Letting Students Get in Touch With the World}
The Internet is a network of over 500,000 computers in 171 countries in universities, schools, industrial sites, and scientific laboratories. The Internet is new to the public schools as well as it is to Bryan. The main purpose of the Internet is to facilitate research and education. Since students need experience in planning, teamwork, research , evaluation, and decision making to prepare them for success, the Internet is a great resource. The Internet allows students to seek information, deal with world events in "real" time, access and manage information in the electronic world, and be effective communicators. The Internet has become a great source for the Bryan students to obtain information for classroom projects. The computer lab is open before and after classes for the students to use the Internet. The Internet has been a great resource for the students at Bryan, letting the students get in touch with the world.

( A Powerful Resource For Bryan Students)
Plato is a different and fun way of earning credits on the computer. The system is specifically designed to meet the needs of learners. Plato spans a broad range of subject areas, with each course targeted to specific competencies and skill levels. The Plato system reinforces skills already learned as new ones are mastered. The Independent Learning class offers four computers with the Plato system for the students to use, and hopes to receive many more. Plato has become very popular in the classroom. Since there are so few computers and so many students that want to use them, students have to ration their time so everyone can get a chance to use the system.

Every Friday morning students from the Bryan Community go to Clinton Elementary School to read and do math with the third and fourth graders. In reading, a Bryan student is paired with one Clinton student for a nine week cycle. In math there may be several Clinton students with each Bryan student. Students from Bryan arrive at Clinton at 10:30 and stay with the children untill l :00.
The Bryan Community and Clinton teachers have seen many benefits for both groups. The younger students get academic
help and they also receive a lot of attention. The Clinton students perceive the Bryan students as adults, and since they usually have to share a teacher with their entire class, they really enjoy having the full attention of an "adult". Another benefit for the Clinton students is that the Bryan students make great presents. At the end of each cycle, the Bryan students bring presents for their student's entire class. For past classes they have brought puzzles or coloring books they had made.

Public Service Announcements
Every quarter the journalism class participated in making a public service announcement. Each class made a thirty second commercial dealing with a different theme. Sandi Mann and Dave Grooman from Cablevision worked with the students on the projects. Before the students started on the public service announcement, the classes had to get together and figure out what kind of theme was needed.
Lincoln Public Schools gave the students a theme, but the students also had a chance to create their own. The public service announcement started with a storyboard (a story board is a rough draft of the content of the commercial). The scenes and dialogue of the commercial were drawn up on the storyboard to get a basic idea of the fmished project.
When the storyboards were finished, the students began using video cameras to shoot various scenes that had been drawn up on the storyboard. Students spent about a week and a half going to different locations like Valentino's, University of Nebraska, State Penitentiary, Mahoney State Park, YMC~ Champions Fun Center, etc.
After the footage was shot and recorded the next stop was Cablevision. The video sequences the students had shot were edited to a master tape and set to music which illustrated the theme of the public service announcement.
The PSA's were shown on Cablevision Channel 21. Some were selected for use on 16 other channels such as ESPN, USA Network, The Discovery Channel, and M1V. The public

This was a doughnut contest. They had to eat the doughnut as fast as they could and win a prize. Everybody enjoys the All School Meetings.

All School Meetings
All School Meetings happen every Friday. It is a way to learn about events and happenings in our school each week. We also honor students who have had 90°/4 attendance. As you can tell we have fun with the different activities. The meeting gives positive feedback to the students.

At the open house. students show their parents what they have done. It also gives the students an opportunity to show off their work to the community. Students are very proud of their work and do a great job.

P.E. /Health in '96
This year's P.E/Health class was faithfully led by Matt, Roger, and Paula. We played excit- • Ing games like the famous ghetto soccer, although softball was the best. In health we got to participate in fun activities such as urine screening and learned some handy first aid tips from Jill Hoover, school nurse. In all, it was a pretty good time.

PHYLLIS: Matt Brethouwer self reliance should enable him to seek the best in himself and others. Val Flores' pleasant disposition and smile made a dreary day brighter. Philip Moss' high sense of order caused me to be more focused. Once Beth Nosal challenged herself to get done, nothing could stand in her way.
VICKY:Wendy Hiatt was very nice and a hard worker. Jeremy Wilhelm gives a new meaning to the word dedicated.
MATI: Morgan Magilton I know Mr. Pierce is your favorite teacher of all time, but maybe I am your second (Ha Ha). I hope your back doesn't give you anymore trouble. Congrats on graduating, you really earned it. Melanie Andersen you're a sweetheart, remember last year in P.M. block when you're the only person that showed up day after day, thanks you cheered me up. Shane Harrington you're a hard worker and that's a fact, good luck with parenthood. BARB: Lorna Fox showed us all what hard work and determination can do, she's on fire. Nichole Koves brought joy to our lives and we benefited from her determination to graduate. Sarah Lawrence came, worked and graduated, WOW. Torrey Lee knew what she wanted and how to get it done. Mark Messenbrink did it after year of truggle, he reached hi goal. Shawn Prenosil worked hard to reach hi goal and did it. Anna Sammons i a gift to all of us, she came to ~'live life out loud and did it. Les Scattergood worked hard to finish last summer and Bryan benefited from his work. Steve Sindel was a delight 8th through 12th grade and always made me smile. Tara Songster was here a short time and was a model student.
This yearbook staff has worked long and hard to make a top-notch yearbook for the Bryan students. The theme for our book ( Sky's The Limit ) represents that the sky is the limit for the students at Bryan. The theme was created by a student to repre-
