Bryan Community celebrates first place in a national Keep America Beautiful recycling competition tudents need to give back to their community - and thal includes tasks such as recycling their own pop cans and water bottles, according to Johnathan Blecha, a enior at the Bryan Community Focus Program. Chelsea Gruhn, also a Bryan senior, agreed: "Participating in our school's recycling program is not just about what we do in clas . That's not the reason we do it. We do it because it's the right thing to do for our environment and for the landfill:' Their efforts were rewarded when the Bryan Community Focus Program won a prestigious Keep America Beautiful award: first place in the state in a new competition called the Recycle Bowl The honor was given to the school in the
state that collected the mo t recyclable material - per capita - during a fourweek period last fall. Lincoln Public chool6 had 17 .school participate - 1,226 schools participated across the nation - and Huntington Elementary chool was awarded second place in the tate. Bryan Principal Mindy Roberts told her students that she was proud of them - not only for the recycling award, but also for all the community and neighborhood ervice projects they accompli h. ur~re.ams IKE SMITH, STREET OUTREACH WORKER Mike Smith, owner of BAYl 98 Skatepark in Westfield shopping mall, came to Bryan Community second quarter to talk about his work. He works as a street outreach worker for Cedars of Lincoln, providing supplies to the "homeless" and interacting most with homeless runaway youth. His Message: We all have a dream we are passionate about. He skated across Nebraska to raise money for non-profit groups. His dream, in part, has been to have a skatepark where youth can hang out; this is the role of BAYl 98. As a teen, Mike went "pro" and found skateboarding to be a great way for teens to spend their free time.

A naturally happy, energetic young boy. Ty took his own life to escape , ears of constant bullying at school. On hearing their story a group o }Oung people began a movement to stop bullying which has grown into a national mo\'ement to stop bullying.
