AF TER G EORG E FRIDE RIC HANDE L FIRST TR AVELED TO LONDON in 1710, he ra rely lef t the cit y, spending the rest of his life a nd ca reer there One notable exception was a long tr ip to Dublin in 1741–4 2 , where he was engaged to present a ser ies of concer ts in a new ha ll. These per for ma nces were so successf ul that he was persuaded to present a second ser ies the yea r a f ter. The Dublin Jour nal soon a nnounced the first per for ma nce of “M r Ha ndel’s ne w Gr a nd Or ator io ca ll’d t he Me ss i ah, ” wh ich he had composed in London in 174 1 in a mat ter of day s. E x per ienced in t he a r t of ha nd ling popu la r accla im, Ha ndel ca lc u lated cor rec t ly in hold ing h is ma ster piece back u nt i l it w a s g ua r a nteed t hu nderous applause t hat wou ld r ing a rou nd t he world nea rly t h ree cent u r ies later. It w a s not necessa r y for Ha ndel to ca ll h is ne w work a “sacred” or ator io, since most or ator ios were a lready set t ing s of episodes f rom t he Bible, u n li ke t he my t holog ica l or “sec u la r ” h istor ica l plots used in Ita lia n oper a . From t he oper a gen re, t hou gh, Ha ndel d id adopt se ver a l musica l elements. For one, t here is t he a r ia (A ngliciz ed a s “a ir ” ) a nu mber for solo voice t hat pauses t he stor y to reflec t on a speci fic sit uat ion or d i lemma . The a r ia’s A–B –A “da capo” for m w a s usef u l for creat ing musica l a nd d r a mat ic interest , w it h a cont r a st ing B sec t ion before a ret u r n to t he A sec t ion. There a re se ver a l such nu mbers in Me ss i ah, includ ing t he a ffec t ing “He w a s despised” in Pa r t II. O t hers d ispense w it h t he “B” sec t ion a ltoget her, a s in “ The people t hat w a l ked in da rk ness” in Pa r t I. In bot h oper a s a nd or ator ios, t he ac t ion of t he stor y is told t h rou gh recitat ives, w it h speech-li ke deliver y over occa siona l chords (some accompa n ied simply w it h ha r psichord, ot hers w it h t he orchest r a). Since t here is lit t le na r r at ive ac t ion in Me ss i ah, t he recitat ives a re of ten shor t.

Most operas of the time lacked a chor us, but t he biblica l stor ies Ha ndel chose for or ator ios a llowed t he chor us to v iv id ly represent hu ma n it y or ind iv idua l g roups of people. However, while his tex ts la ment the captiv it y of the Israelites a nd promote unit y Ha ndel pa r t ia lly f u nded per for ma nces of h is or ator ios t h rou gh sig n i fica nt fi na ncia l investments in the South Sea Compa ny a nd Roy a l A f r ica n Compa ny, t wo major players in t he tra nsatla ntic tra nspor t of enslaved people W h ile t h is pa r t of t he stor y ca n’t be overlooked, Ha ndel’s Me ss iah has ta ken on a life of its ow n over t he cent u r ies. Its libretto has been translated into Zulu, Spanish A rabic, Inu k titut, a nd other la ng uages, recla iming a v ision of sha red huma nit y that tra nscends the contradictions of its time.

W it h te x t d r aw n f rom t he K i n g Ja mes Bible a nd t he Book of Common Prayer, Messiah’s words a re prose, rather tha n flor id poetr y A s such, the action throughout is picturesque rather tha n dra matic. In selecting the tex t, Ha ndel a nd his libret tist, Charles Jennens, prefer red to sta nd back from the stor y w ith passages of prophec y or contemplation. This is more pronounced as the work proceeds: Pa r t I tells por tions of t he Ch r istmas stor y ; Pa r t II reflects on (rat her t ha n na r rates) t he passion of Christ, his resurrection, and ascension, culminating in the g reat (and much-loved) shouts of “Halleluja h!”; and Par t III concentrates on the promise of heaven, the day of judg ment, and Chr ist’s ultimate tr iumph over sin a nd death.

Since its 174 2 prem iere, Me ss i ah ha s ne ver d ropped out of sight a nd hea r ing, a nd by the time Ha ndel died in 1759, he had presided over 36 per for ma nces of the orator io, a fa r g reater number tha n he could have ex pected when he composed it. The work sur v ives not on ly as a favor ite work for chor uses; it has won t he a ffection of listeners worldw ide to a deg ree sca rcely r iv a led by a ny ot her piece of music.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Ve rse 1

Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glor y to the newborn King; Peace on ear th and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!”

Joy ful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glor y to the newborn King!”

Ve rse 2

Christ , by highest heav’n adored, Christ , the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come, Of fspring of a Virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deit y!

Pleased as man with man to dwell,

Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glor y to the newborn King!”

Ve rse 3

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings; Mild he lays his glor y by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of ear th, Born to give them second bir th. Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glor y to the newborn King!”
