Perspectivesfrom the Executive Director February 2014 This month, we salute conductor Pierre Boulez for his half-century of service to The Cleveland Orchestra. It is with great pleasure that we look back on his five decades with this institution, to his contributions toward this Orchestra’s musical excellence and innovation, and proudly announce him as the recipient of this season’s Distinguished Service Award (see pages 30-33).

The Cleveland Orchestra will always honor the traditions and history that have brought us to today. Yet, with our unwavering dedication to musical excellence, we are also committed to embracing changing times and changing circumstances, to approach each new decade in its newness, complexity, and opportunity. With your input, we are exploring new programs to better serve and engage the great people of Northeast Ohio, including: Young Professionals. In January, we launched The Circle, a new opportunity for young professionals to strengthen their relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra. The program brings music lovers aged 21 to 40 together for concerts and networking events, enabling them to connect with musicians, the music, and colleagues in the arts and business communities. The enthusiasm of these young people represents the future, and we are pleased to welcome them and host this new social forum.

Severance Hall Facelift. In recognition of changing times and changing needs, this past fall the Orchestra’s Board of Trustees assembled a taskforce to take an intensive look at options for enhancing the concert experience for Cleveland Orchestra attendees.

The world has changed since Severance Hall’s renovation in 2000, and we want to ensure that we are supporting world-class performances with a world-class venue and services.

After surveying audience members and making an assessment in comparison to other local facilities and national concert halls, we are now creating a roadmap for improvements with the biggest positive impacts for our patrons. I look forward to sharing recommendations, and asking for your further counsel and advice, in the coming year.

Open Dialog. Also this season, we began a series of “Coffee and Conversation” gatherings to bring long-term supporters and concertgoers to Severance Hall and give them a transparent look at — and opportunity to ask candid questions about — the Orchestra’s ideas for change. The dialogue between donors, board members, musicians, and ticket buyers, and the feedback that has emerged from these events, is helping to shape the Orchestra’s plans for a second century of service to the people of Northeast Ohio.

Young Audiences. Alongside these newest initiatives, we continue to pursue our goal of building the youngest audience of any orchestra. Under 18s Free — which offers a free ticket to select concerts for a young person with every paying adult — has been so successful at attracting families to Orchestra performances in Northeast Ohio that we have expanded it to Miami during this season’s four-week residency in Florida. Young people make up 20% of Orchestra audiences this season, the result of the continued popularity of Under 18s Free, along with the Orchestra’s Student Advantage program and Frequent Fan Card. Their passion for music represents our future and our ongoing commitment to serve Northeast Ohio.

In concerts at its winter home at Severance Hall and at each summer’s Blossom Music Festival, in residencies from Miami to Vienna, and on tour around the world, The Cleveland Orchestra sets standards of artistic excellence, creative programming, and active community engagement. With the 2013-14 season, Franz Welser-Möst enters his twelft h year leading the ensemble, with a commitment extending to the Orchestra’s centennial in 2018. for an intensive week of special activities and performances, as well as the broadening of the Orchestra’s ongoing education and community engagement initiatives to include Make Music!, a program of active and participatory experience and learning; the establishment of residencies around the world, fostering creative artistic growth and an expanded financial base — including ongoing residencies at the Vienna Musikverein (the first of its kind by an American orchestra) and in Florida under the name Cleveland Orchestra Miami (featuring an annual series of concerts and community activities, coupled with educational presentations and collaborations based on successful programs pioneered at home in Cleveland); creative new artistic collaborations with arts institutions in Northeast Ohio, including staged works, concerts, and chamber music performances; a concentrated and successful effort to develop future generations of audiences for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Northeast Ohio, through research, targeted discounts, social media promotion, and student ticket programs, with demonstrated results at Severance Hall and Blossom; a variety of new concert offerings (including KeyBank Fridays@7 and Celebrity Series at Severance Hall as well as movie, themed, and family presentations at Blossom) to play more music for more people; the return of ballet as a regular part of the Orchestra’s presentations, featuring ongoing collaborations with Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet; continuing and expanded educational partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities across Northeast Ohio and beyond; concert tours from coast to coast in the United States, including regular appearances at Carnegie Hall; ongoing recording activities, including new releases under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst, Mitsuko Uchida, and Pierre Boulez, as well as a series of acclaimed DVD concert presentations of symphonies by Anton Bruckner led by Welser-Möst.

The Cleveland Orchestra was founded in 1918 by a group of local citizens intent on creating an ensemble worthy of joining America’s ranks of major symphony orchestras. Over the ensuing decades, the Orchestra quickly grew from a fine regional organization to being one of the most admired symphony orchestras in the world.

The opening in 1931 of Severance Hall as the Orchestra’s home brought a special pride to the ensemble and its hometown, as well as providing an enviable and intimate acoustic environment in which to develop and refine the Orchestra’s artistry.

Year-round performances became a reality in 1968 with the opening of Blossom Music Center, one of the most beautiful and acoustically admired outdoor concert facilities in the United States.

marks Franz Welser-Möst’s twelfth year as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra, with a long-term commitment extending to the Orchestra’s centennial in 2018. Under his direction, the Orchestra is acclaimed for its continuing artistic excellence, is extending and enhancing its community programming at home in Northeast Ohio, is presented in a series of ongoing residencies in the United States and Europe, continues its historic championship of new composers through commissions and premieres, and has re-established itself as an important operatic ensemble. Concurrently with his post in Cleveland, Mr. Welser-Möst is general music director of the Vienna State Opera.

With a committed focus on music education in Northeast Ohio, Franz Welser-Möst has taken The Cleveland Orchestra back into public schools with performances in collaboration with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Mr. Welser-Möst’s championship of community music-making expands upon his active participation in educational programs and collaborative programming, including the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and partnerships with music conservatories, universities, and other arts institutions across Northeast Ohio.

Under Mr. Welser-Möst’s leadership, The Cleveland Orchestra has established an ongoing biennial residency in Vienna at the famed Musikverein concert hall and another at Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival. Together, they have appeared in residence at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan, and at the Salzburg Festival, where a 2008 residency included five sold-out performances of a staged production of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka.

In the United States, Mr. Welser-Möst has established an annual multi-week Cleveland Orchestra residency in Florida under the name Cleveland Orchestra Miami and, in 2011, launched a regular new residency at New York’s Lincoln Center Festival.

To the start of this season, The Cleveland Orchestra has performed fourteen world and fifteen United States premieres under Franz Welser-Möst’s direction.

Through the Roche Commissions project, he and the Orchestra have premiered works by Harrison Birtwistle, Chen Yi, Hanspeter Kyburz, George Benjamin, Toshio Hosokawa, and Matthias Pintscher in partnership with the Lucerne Festival and Carnegie Hall. In addition, the Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow program has brought new voices to the repertoire, including Pintscher, Marc-André Dalbavie, Susan Botti, Julian Anderson, Johannes Maria Staud, Jörg Widmann, Sean Shepherd, and Ryan Wigglesworth.

in Cleveland, re-establishing the Orchestra as an important operatic ensemble. Following six seasons of opera-in-concert presentations, he brought fully staged opera back to Severance Hall with a three-season cycle of Zurich Opera productions of the MozartDa Ponte operas. He led concert performances of Strauss’s Salome at Severance Hall and at Carnegie Hall in May 2012 and in May 2014 brings an innovative made-for-Cleveland production of Leoš Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen to Northeast Ohio.

Franz Welser-Möst became general music director of the Vienna State Opera in 2010. His long partnership with the company has included acclaimed performances of Tristan and Isolde, a new production of Wagner’s Ring cycle with stage director Sven-Eric Bechtolf, and critically praised new productions of Hindemith’s Cardillac and Janáček’s Katya Kabanova and From the House of the Dead. During the 201314 season, his Vienna schedule includes a new production of Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West, as well as performances of Tristan and Isolde, Verdi’s Don Carlo, Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Der Rosenkavalier.

Mr. Welser-Möst also maintains an ongoing relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic. Recent performances with the Philharmonic include appearances in concert at La Scala Milan, at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and in opera presentations at the Salzburg Festival. He also led the Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concert, viewed by telecast in seventy countries worldwide in 2011 and again in 2013. Across a decadelong tenure with the Zurich Opera, culminating in three seasons as general music director (2005-08), Mr. Welser-Möst led the company in more than 40 new productions.

Franz Welser-Möst’s recordings and videos have won major awards, including the Gramophone Award, Diapason d’Or, Japanese Record Academy Award, and two Grammy nominations. With The Cleveland Orchestra, he has created DVD recordings of live performances of five of Bruckner’s symphonies, presented in three acoustically distinctive venues (the Abbey of St. Florian in Austria, Vienna’s Musikverein, and Severance Hall). With Cleveland, he has also released a recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony as well as an all-Wagner album featuring soprano Measha Brueggergosman. DVD releases on the EMI label have included Mr. Welser-Möst leading Zurich Opera productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Fierrabras, and Peter Grimes.

For his talents and dedication, Mr. Welser-Möst has received honors that include recognition from the Western Law Center for Disability Rights, honorary membership in the Vienna Singverein, appointment as an Academician of the European Academy of Yuste, a Gold Medal from the Upper Austrian government for his work as a cultural ambassador, a Decoration of Honor from the Republic of Austria for his artistic achievements, and the Kilenyi Medal from the Bruckner Society of America. He is the co-author of Cadences: Observations and Conversations, published in a German edition in 2007.

2013 European Festivals Tour draws praise for Welser-Möst, Cleveland Orchestra, and Chorus The following are excerpted from press commentary about the Orchestra’s pererformances during its European Tour and Vienna Residency, November 8-22: “The handshakes from Franz Welser-Möst said it all. In acknowledging the principals of the Cleveland Orchestra Friday night at Vienna’s Musikverein, the music director did what most in attendance probably wished they could do themselves: personally thank the group for three superb performances in a row. Not once in their concerts Wednesday through Friday was it apparent that the group had been traveling abroad nearly three weeks. No, here at the end of their 2013 European Tour, the artists played with new focus and energy, and made sure Vienna enjoyed the fruits of their long musical labor. The main thing apparent, frankly, was that the orchestra had been playing Beethoven and Shostakovich nonstop for weeks, and knew their six scores inside and out. Here as nowhere else, the artists transcended the numerous pages on their stands, and simply took advantage of the Musikverein’s legendary acoustics. No less clear was that the audience recognized expertise, and liked what it heard. . . . The response each night was hugely enthusiastic, giving Welser-Möst cause to repeatedly acknowledge individual players and the ensemble as a whole. On Friday, he even went so far as to jog into the bass section.”

“The second evening of their visit to Frankfurt started luxuriously: The Cleveland Orchestra’s own chorus performed Beethoven’s Mass in C major at the Alte Oper, joined of course by the orchestra itself from Northeast Ohio, which was the focus of two concerts in the city. The Cleveland Orchestra . . . juxtaposed works by Beethoven with the Sixth and Tenth Symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich. The symbiosis between the orchestra and the chorus was unsurpassable. Under Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst, who has been music director in the city on Lake Erie since 2002, Beethoven’s lyrical, literal setting of the Latin Mass came across lean, subtle, and transparent, despite all the opulence in the performing forces. The balance between singers and instrumentalists was perfect in the soft and mild passages.”

Post-concert performers chosen for spring concerts in KeyBank Fridays@7 series

The Cleveland Orchestra’s Fridays@7 series continues in 2014 with three popular concert offerings, pairing orchestral favorites with an array of post-concert world music presentations. The three spring concerts (March 7, April 11, and May 2) feature popular works for piano and orchestra by Rachmaninoff, plus Mozart’s Requiem. The one-hour concerts include the early 7 p.m. start time, plus extra music both before and after. The post-concert presentations in the spring will be: March 7 — New York Gypsy All-Stars.

Back by popular demand to Fridays@7, the New York Gypsy All-Stars jump the turnstiles of Balkanalia, Turkish roots, and gypsy soul with funky refinement.

April 11 — The Medicine Show reaches people in hard-to-get places. The international group made up of players from Brazil, America, Japan, and Germany who are inspired by the intersection of their collective desire to play music that is a passport into another dimension.

May 2 — Requiem to Resurrection.

Gospel legend Theresa Thomason and the Mt. Zion Congregational Church gospel choir will lift the rafters in a musical journey for the soul.

Orchestra announces “At Home” neighborhood residency in Lakewood for May 2014 The Cleveland Orchestra and Lakewood have anat home nounced a new partnership to present the Orchestra’s next “At Home” neighborhood residency in May 2014. The centerpiece of this week of activities, education programs, and public performances will be a free Cleveland Orchestra concert at the Civic Auditorium in Lakewood on Saturday evening, May 24. The concert will be recorded for a delayed broadcast on WVIZ/PBS ideastream, and a radio broadcast on WCLV 104.9. The television broadcast will also feature a segment about the Orchestra’s performances, collaborations, and events in Lakewood.

“Creating a grassroots opportunity for Lakewood to experience perhaps the greatest orchestra in the world at a very personal level is a cultural experience that we will remember for years to come,” commented Lakewood Mayor Michael P. Summers in announcing the collaboration. “Our increasingly vibrant commercial corridors and neighborhoods will be made ever-more-so by the music and the musicians.” Ian Andrews, executive director of LakewoodAlive, Lakewood’s nonprofit economic development organization, added, “Lakewood is known for its commitment to the arts. The Orchestra’s events will strengthen this commitment and showcase the city’s great quality of life, local organizations, restaurants, schools, and businesses that make our community special.”

The Cleveland Orchestra introduced its “At Home” neighborhood residency program in May 2013 with a week of performances and activities in the Gordon Square community of Cleveland. Events include free performances by Orchestra musicians and education programs for children, students, and families. Details of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Lakewood neighborhood residency will be announced in March 2014, along with information about acquiring tickets for the free Cleveland Orchestra concerts.

Special benefit concert for Cleveland Orchestra Chorus on Sunday, February 9 features Orchestra musicians

On Sunday afternoon, February 9, five Cleveland Orchestra musicians present a concert at Dunham Tavern Barn (6709 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland). The members of the Omni String Quartet (Jung-Min Amy Lee, violin; Alicia Koelz, violin; Joanna Patterson Zakany, viola; Tanya Ell, cello) are joined by Mary Lynch (oboe) for a program that includes William Bolcom’s Oboe Quintet. The event begins at 3:00 p.m. and is presented as part of the Heights Arts Close Encounters series directed by Orchestra violinist Isabel Trautwein. Reservations are required, seating is limited. Tickets are $50 per person ($40 for Heights Arts members).

A very special evening of music-making takes place at Severance Hall on Sunday, February 9, with members of The Cleveland Orchestra joining together with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus in a pre-Valentine’s Day musical celebration in support of the Chorus’s Touring and Education Fund. The festive event features songs, musical dances, and romances performed by Cleveland Orchestra musicians and the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus.

Musical selections include dances by Dvořák, Borodin, and Piazzolla, arias by Rossini, Dvořák, and Mozart, and Clara Schumann’s Romances. In addition, the Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus sings selections from Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes. by Orchestra musician; featuring trombone hits and transcriptions Massimo La Rosa, principal trombone of The Cleveland Orchestra, released a new album in October titled Sempre Espressivo. The album features works for trombone, including J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G major for solo cello (performed on trombone) and a new arrangement of the Intermezzo from Puccini’s opera Manon Lescaut.

Concert Previews The Cleveland Orchestra offers a variety of options for learning more about the music before each concert begins.

For each concert, the program book includes program notes commenting on and providing background about the composer and his or her work being performed that week, along with biographies of the guest artists and other information. You can read these before the concert, at intermission, or afterward. (Program notes are also posted ahead of time online at clevelandorchestra.com, usually by the Monday directly preceding the concert.)

The Orchestra’s Music Study Groups also provide a way of exploring the music in more depth. These classes, professionally led by Dr. Rose Breckenridge, meet weekly in locations around Cleveland to explore the music being played each week and the stories behind the composers’ lives.

Free Concert Previews are presented one hour before most subscription concerts throughout the season at Severance Hall. The previews (see listing at right) feature a variety of speakers and guest artists speaking or conversing about that weekend’s program, and often include the opportunity for audience members to ask questions.

PIERRE BOULEZ

— conductor, composer, teacher, and author — is among the most distinguished musicians active in the world today. Over the course of nearly fift y years, he has led The Cleveland Orchestra in over 220 performances at home and on tour. He has been invited — and has chosen — to return to Cleveland again and again, for recordings and concerts, and in friendship. In half a century of service to Cleveland, he has created a peerless legacy of great music, new music, and unrivalled music-making.

Pierre Boulez first led The Cleveland Orchestra in 1965 at the invitation of music director George Szell, making his American professional conducting debut at Severance Hall. He was appointed the Orchestra’s first principal guest conductor in 1969, and served as musical advisor during the two seasons following Szell’s death.

He has returned regularly to lead performances with the Orchestra, and in five decades of concerts here has presented works spanning six centuries — by composers as varied as Gabrieli, Rameau, J. S. Bach, and Schubert to Debussy, Janáček, Dalbavie, and Kyburz. Beyond Northeast Ohio, he has conducted The Cleveland Orchestra on tour in Tokyo and Paris, and at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Mr. Boulez has earned widespread respect as a champion of contemporary music. Beginning with the American premiere of his own Figures, Doubles, Prismes in 1965, Boulez has conducted more than thirty Cleveland premieres with The Cleveland Orchestra, including the world premiere, in 2000, of Marc-André Dalbavie’s Concertate il suono. In 1986, he conducted the Orchestra in a special two-week series of “Great Composers of Our Time” concerts featuring his own music. The presentation of the 2009 Kyoto Prize to Boulez reaffirmed the importance of his compositions and activities as teacher, conductor, and advocate of new music.

Pierre Boulez’s recordings with The Cleveland Orchestra present a brilliant and clearly focused vision of his role as a conductor. These recordings have won five Grammy Awards (with works by Berlioz, Debussy, and Stravinsky). The Cleveland Orchestra can also be heard within Boulez’s recorded cycle of Mahler’s nine symphonies, performing Nos. 4 and 7. And most recently, Boulez recorded the Adagio from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 and Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with Cleveland, as well as performances of both Ravel piano concertos, at Severance Hall.

Born in France in 1925, Pierre Boulez studied mathematics before turning fulltime to music as his life’s vocation. During the ensuing decades of his distinguished career, he has held important positions with performing ensembles and teaching institutions in North America and Europe. In 2010, he was invited to celebrate his eighty-fift h birthday with a series of concerts with the orchestras of Cleveland, Chicago, and New York. In 2012, he was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame.

Since making his American professional conducting debut with The Cleveland Orchestra at the invitation of George Szell in 1965, Pierre Boulez has led the Orchestra in more than 220 concerts over the past half century. He was appointed the Orchestra’s first Principal Guest Conductor in 1969, and served as Musical Advisor for two seasons beginning shortly after Szell’s death in 1970. In five decades, he has recorded a variety of works with The Cleveland Orchestra.

Four of these albums — featuring works by Debussy, Stravinsky, and Berlioz — won five Grammy Awards.

Boulez’s complete recorded cycle of Mahler symphonies features Nos. 4 and 7 with Cleveland. Most recently, he extended his recorded legacy with live concert recordings at Severance Hall of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn and both of Ravel’s piano concertos.

THIS WEEKEND’S PROGRAM

offers three musical works by three great masters of classical music. Two are infused with sunshine, while the third is filled with the wonderful camaraderie of friendship — expertly rendered into musical form, and featuring sunny moments, intense feelings, and heartfelt cheer.

Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto was written when the composer was still a teenager — at a time, in fact, when he was gaining many aspects of his mature musical style. At the time, he was creating much music, and the practice of doing so — and of hearing his works in performance — quickly helped the young Mozart understand what music should and could be for him. Although he wrote five violin concertos in the span of a couple years, the Third is where Mozart’s adult style comes remarkably into focus. Clear and concise, emotional and captivating, with depth and introspection juxtaposed against unadulterated joy.

Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony is one of this composer’s most charming and vibrant orchestral works. Inspired by a trip to Italy Mozart, when he was just 22, this music, one can believe, Mendelssohn, actually drips with sunshine, the smells of fresh and Elgar food, and the tastes of good table wine.

The British Elgar leaped onto the world stage in 1899 with the premiere of his Enigma Variations. Here he wrote a series of loving musical portraits of his circle of close friends. The clarity of the depictions is still remarkably fresh more than a hundred years later — with the intensity of some of the relationships utterly discernable. Evenso, this music can also be enjoyed merely as good music, as variations in musical parlance and possibilities.

Nikolaj Znaider Celebrated as a violinist and conductor, Danish musician Nikolaj Znaider is acclaimed as one of his generation’s most versatile artists. He made his Cleveland Orchestra debut in 1999 and most recently performed at Severance Hall in October 2011 and on a West Coast tour in April 2012. This weekend’s concerts mark his conducting debut with the Orchestra.

Born in Denmark in 1975 to Polish-Israeli parents, Nikolaj Znaider studied with Milan Vitek at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. After receiving First Prize in the 1992 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition at age 16, he worked with Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School.

He won First Prize at the 1997 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and later studied with Boris Kushnir at the Vienna Conservatory. Mr. Znaider is founder of the Nordic Music Academy for string players, where he served as director for a decade.

Mr. Znaider regularly performs with the world’s leading orchestras, including those of Amsterdam, Chicago, Cologne, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, and Vienna. He has also led the Czech Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, Halle Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Currently artist-in-residence with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Nikolaj Znaider previously served in the same position with the Dresden Staatskapelle and London Symphony orchestras. In 2010, he became conductor of the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra in St. Petersburg. As a chamber musician, he collaborates regularly with artists such as Daniel Barenboim and Yefim Bronfman.

As an RCA Red Seal artist, Nikolaj Znaider has recorded the violin concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, Korngold, and Mendelssohn, and Brahms’s complete works for violin and piano. His most recent release features Elgar’s Violin Concerto. His album of Prokofiev’s and Glazunov’s violin concertos received the Editor’s Choice award from Grammophone Magazine. Mr. Znaider’s discography for EMI Classics includes Mozart’s piano trios with Daniel Barenboim and the Nielsen and Bruch violin concertos.

He was also author of the most important 18th-century book on the art of violin playing. His tome, Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule (“Attempt at a Thorough Violin Method”), was published in 1756, the same year his son was born. Wolfgang, who performed on both the violin and the harpsichord by the time he was seven, was continually exhorted by his father to take the violin more seriously. On October 18, 1777 — he was now 21 — Leopold wrote to him: “You yourself do not know how well you play the violin, if you will only do yourself credit and play with energy, with your whole heart and mind, yes, just as if you were the first violinist in Europe.” (This was in response to an earlier letter by Wolfgang dated October 6, in which the young man, writing from Munich, was boasting of his performing prowess: “I played as though I were the finest fiddler in all Europe.”)

In the end, Wolfgang leaned more and more toward the keyboard instruments. Once he had moved to Vienna and out of his father’s sphere of influence, he stopped performing on the violin altogether (when playing string quartets in private, he would choose the viola). Had it really been his ambition to become the “finest fiddler in all Europe,” he might have continued to write violin concertos in his Vienna years, and if he had done so, the entire history of the violin concerto would have been different. But since, in the last ten years of his life, his performing ambitions were concentrated on the keyboard, we have a magnificent series of piano concertos from the Vienna years but no comparable works for the violin.

Mozart’s five violin concertos (written either for himself or for the Italian violinist Antonio Brunetti) all date from his late teens, when he was living in his native Salzburg as concertmaster of Archbishop Colloredo’s orchestra. The first one (in B-flat major, K.207) was written in 1773, and the other four in 1775.

Within the series of violin concertos, the G-major work, the third in the line, represents a quantum leap in Mozart’s evolution. The first two concertos were still rather heavily indebted to the conventions of the day, although those conventions were handled with a freshness and originality that only Mozart About the Music

could muster. But in the third concerto he broke new ground.

Moving further away from the Baroque concerto idea than he had in the earlier works, he began to use melodic contrast and development in novel ways, approaching what would later be known as “classical sonata form.” In the second-movement Adagio in particular, he achieved an entirely new level of emotional intensity. Finally, the last movement, with its changes of meter and tempo and its unmistakable folk-song quotations, is completely unprecedented in Mozart’s output. (He used the same devices again in the finales of the fourth and fifth concertos.)

In another letter from October 1777, Wolfgang had some new violinistic triumphs to report to his father. He performed, in Augsburg, a concerto by his contemporary Vanhal, “which was unanimously applauded. . . . In the evening at supper I played my Strassburger concerto, which went like oil. Everyone praised my beautiful, pure tone.” Then, in the next sentence, we learn that Wolfgang immediately switched to the clavichord, playing some of his keyboard works and improvising for his audience.

The designation “Strassburger concerto” must have been a shorthand understood by father and son, for Leopold, too, had used it in a letter just a few weeks earlier: “Brunetti . . . played your Strassburger concerto most excellently.” For many years, it was not known which concerto was meant by this epithet, until Hungarian musicologist Dénes Bartha solved the enigma in the 1960s. Bartha discovered the last movement’s folk-like melody in an early 19th-century Hungarian song manuscript with the explicit identification: “Strassburger.” The tune, therefore, must have been widely known under that name, and was, in all probability, immediately recognized by most listeners, to their great surprise and delight.

This concerto runs about 25 minutes in performance.

Mozart scored it for solo violin and an orchestra of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 horns, and strings. According to 18thcentury practice, a bassoon would normally double the bass line, although there is no indication of this in the score. The oboes play in the first and third movements only, and the flutes in the second movement; Mozart evidently counted on the same musicians to play both instruments.

The Cleveland Orchestra first performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G major in March 1952, under George Szell’s direction and with Arthur Grumiaux as the soloist.

The Orchestra’s most recent performances were given in May 2008, with violinist Stefan Jackiw under the direction of Andrew Davis.

in 1830-31, Felix Mendelssohn worked on two symphonies simultaneously. One was intended to capture the composer’s current impressions of Italy, which he toured from Milan to Naples, the other to reflect on his journey to Scotland back in 1829. The Roman climate being hardly conducive to work on a Northern subject, it is no wonder that Mendelssohn finished the “Italian” Symphony first (he himself referred to it by that name). The “Scottish” Symphony was not completed until much later, in 1842.

The two symphonies seem to complement one another in several ways. Not only were they inspired by two completely different landscapes, but some of their musical characteristics are also in contrast. The “Scottish” Symphony is in A minor with a last movement in A major, while the “Italian” Symphony is in A major with an A-minor finale (it is much more unusual to end a major-key symphony with a finale in the minor than the other way around).

Without an introduction, the first movement of the “Italian” Symphony begins with an exuberant melody bursting with youthful energy. A 19th-century commentator spoke about the “bright, sunny, laughing freshness” of the symphony, a quality established right at the very beginning. Other themes in the movement sing in parallel thirds, like a pair of lovers on an opera stage, or move about in light dance steps like the elves in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The second movement, marked Andante con moto, was probably inspired by a processional song Mendelssohn heard in Rome. It is occasionally dubbed “Pilgrim’s March,” because of a certain resemblance to the “Pilgrim’s March” from Berlioz’s Harold in Italy (another famous “Italian Symphony” from the 1830s). Another explanation was proposed by musicologist Eric Werner, who traced the theme of the Andante movement to a song by Mendelssohn’s teacher, Carl Friedrich Zelter. The text of the song (“There Was a King in Thule”) is from Goethe’s Faust, in which Gretchen sings it as a ballad about a king in a distant land who has lost his beloved. Goethe was an important mentor to the young Mendelssohn and, because both he and Zelter died within a few months of each other in 1832, it is possible that Mendelssohn intended this movement as a meAbout the Music

morial to two men who had played important roles in his life.

The third movement, marked Con moto moderato, is really a minuet with a Trio section, although Mendelssohn didn’t say so explicitly. The minuet section looks back with a touch of nostalgia to the days of Haydn and Mozart. The Trio, with its Romantic horn calls and puckish violin-and-flute theme, is more distinctly Mendelssohnian. After the recapitulation of the minuet, the Trio theme is hinted at once more, before the movement ends suddenly in a hushed pianissimo.

The Presto fourth-movement finale is titled “Saltarello,” after a quick folk dance of Southern Italy. Of its two main melodies, the first one is indeed a bouncing saltarello; the other, however, is a ceaselessly running tarantella (a different kind of Italian folk dance). Whether saltarello or tarantella, however, the dance character dominates the entire finale. It is only near the end that a more lyrical, slower-moving motif appears, but it is soon swept up in the returning dance rhythms.

About the Music

At a Glance Mendelssohn began work on his “Italian” Symphony in Rome early in 1831 and completed it in Berlin in March 1833. It was premiered on May 13, 1833, in London at a concert of the Philharmonic Society. Mendelssohn, however, was dissatisfied with the work and withdrew the score after three performances.

He revised movements 2-4 in 1834-35. He planned to revise the first movement as well, but apparently never did so. The score was published after Mendelssohn’s death without the revisions of 1834-35. It is best known and most often performed in the 1833 version. It was introduced to the United States on November 1, 1850, by Carl Bergmann and Boston’s Germania Musical Society.

This symphony runs about 25 minutes in performance. Mendelssohn scored it for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings.

The Cleveland Orchestra first performed Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony in 1924, under Nikolai Sokoloff ’s direction. The most recent performance by The Cleveland Orchestra was given in April 2011 under James Feddeck’s direction at Ocean Reef, Florida.

E L G A R ’ S Variations on an Original Theme is the work that — almost overnight — made the 42-year-old into a famous composer. He had, in fact, had some success the year before with his cantata Caractacus, performed at the Leeds Festival. But Elgar did not conquer the musical life of London until one of the great conductors of the time, Hans Richter, presented what later became known as the “Enigma” Variations at St. James’s Hall on June 19, 1899.

At the premiere, the work was greeted as the greatest composition for large orchestra ever written by an Englishman.

And, for more than a century now, audiences have delighted in what Elgar had written. They have been equally intrigued by what he withheld, namely that the work had a secret that he refused to divulge beyond some carefully worded “enigmatic” clues.

The story of the “Enigma” Variations began one night late in 1898 when Elgar was improvising at the piano at home in Worcestershire. His wife, Alice, was struck by a particular melody and asked her husband what it was. Elgar replied: “Nothing — but something could be made of it.” As he continued to develop his short theme, Elgar started to toy with the idea of how it could be made to reflect the personalities of some of his friends. Out of this private little game grew what is arguably Elgar’s greatest masterpiece.

On October 24, 1898, Elgar announced his new work in a letter to his close friend August Jaeger (who is depicted as “Nimrod” in Variation 9): “Since I’ve been back I have sketched a set of Variations (orkestry) on an original theme: the Variations have amused me because I’ve labelled ’em with the nicknames of my particular friends — you are Nimrod. That is to say I’ve written the variations each one to represent the mood of the ‘party’ — I’ve liked to imagine the ‘party’ writing the var; him (or her) self & have written what I think they wd. have written — if they were asses enough to compose — it’s a quaint idee & the result is amusing to those behind the scenes & won’t affect the hearer who “nose nuffin” — what think you?”

At a Glance Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme in 1898-99. The work was first performed on June 19, 1899, at St. James’s Hall in London under the direction of Hans Richter. Elgar subsequently revised the orchestration and added a coda; he led the first performance of this version in September 1899 in Worcester. The score, published later that year, is dedicated “to my friends pictured within.” The word “Enigma” appears over the theme in the original manuscript. The Enigma Variations were introduced to the United States in 1902

by Theodore Thomas and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The Enigma Variations run about 30 minutes in performance. Elgar scored the piece for 2 flutes (second doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle), organ (optional), and strings.

The Cleveland Orchestra first performed the Enigma Variations in January 1934, under the direction of Artur Rodzinski. The most recent performances by the Orchestra were led by Giancarlo Guerrero in Florida in March 2011.

behind the music. Although Elgar only wrote out monograms for each in the score, he quickly enough admitted who was who — and at various times openly commented about each person’s musical portrait. The names of all but one of the movements had been identified publically soon after the premiere.

Even more mysterious, however, were the implications of a statement Elgar made at the time of the premiere: “The Enigma itself I will not explain — its ‘dark saying’ must be left unguessed, and I warn you that the apparent connection between the variations and the Theme is often of the slightest texture; further, through and over the whole set another and larger theme ‘goes,’ but is not played — so the principal Theme never appears.”

Before considering possible answers to the Enigma itself, let’s walk through the theme and variations themselves — and to Elgar’s “ friends pictured within.” All the quoted words that follow here are by Elgar himself (unless indicated otherwise): The Theme (Andante, G minor, 4/4) consists of two ideas: an expressive string melody that is constantly interrupted by rests on the downbeat (and that fits the words “Edward Elgar” surprisingly well), and a second melody that is more continuous, and is built of parallel thirds played by strings and woodwinds.

Variation 1. “C.A.E.” (L’istesso tempo [“the same tempo”] G minor, 4/4) is a portrait of Caroline Alice Elgar, the composer’s wife. “The variation is really a prolongation of the theme with what I wished to be romantic and delicate additions; those who know C.A.E will understand this reference to one whose life was a romantic and delicate inspiration.” The little motif played by oboes and bassoons that acts as a counterpoint of sorts to the main theme was the signal Elgar used to whistle to let Alice know that he was home.

Variation 2. “H.D.S-P.” (Allegro, G minor, 3/8). Hew David Steuart-Powell was a pianist and Elgar’s chamber music partner. “His characteristic diatonic run over the keys is here humorously travestied in the semiquaver [sixteenth-note] passages; these should suggest a Toccata, but chromatic beyond H.D.S-P’s liking.” The violins and woodwind instruments play the humorous sixteenth-notes, while the main theme appears in the cellos and basses.

Variation 3. “R.B.T.” (Allegretto, G major, 3/8). Richard Baxter Townshend, a writer and scholar who lived in Oxford, used to ride his tricycle around town with the bell constantly ringing. (He had a hearing problem.) He also participated in amateur theatrical performances, and the oboe solo in the variation is supposed to represent him as his voice occasionally cracked. In her book Memories of a Variation, Dora Penny (see variation 10), who later became Mrs. Richard Powell, wrote: “Elgar has got him with his funny voice and manner — and the tricycle! It is all there and is just a huge joke to anyone who knew him well.”

Variation 4. “W.M.B.” (Allegro di molto, G minor, 3/4).

William Meath Baker was “a country squire, gentleman and scholar. In the days of horses and carriages it was more difficult than in these days of petrol to arrange the carriages for the day to suit a large number of guests. This Variation was written after the host had, with a slip of paper in his hand, forcibly read out the arrangements for the day and hurriedly left the music-room with an inadvertent bang of the door.” This boisterous variation, lasting less than half a minute, is the shortest in the set.

Variation 5. “R.P.A.” (Moderato, C minor, 12/8). Richard Penrose Arnold, son of the poet Matthew Arnold, was “a great lover of music which he played (on the piano-forte) in a self-taught manner, evading difficulties but suggesting in a mysterious way the real feeling. up by whimsical and witty remarks.” According to Mrs. Powell, the staccato (short-note) figure in the woodwinds represents his characteristic laugh. Thus far, this is the longest and most elaborate of the variations.

Variation 6. “Ysobel” (Andantino, C major, 3/2). Isabel Fitton was a viola player — hence the special treatment of the viola in this variation, both as a section and as a solo instrument. “The opening bar, a phrase made use of throughout the variation, is an ‘exercise’ for crossing the strings — a difficulty for beginners; on this is built a pensive, and for a moment, romantic movement.” Isabel was quite tall, a circumstance suggested by the wide leaps in the melody.

Variation 7. “Troyte” (Presto, C major, 1/1 [i.e. a single beat per bar]). Arthur Troyte Griffith was an architect and a close friend of Elgar’s. “The uncouth rhythm of the drums and lower strings was really suggested by some maladroit essays to play the pianoforte; later the strong rhythm suggests the attempts of the instructor (E.E.) to make something like order out of chaos, and the final despairing ‘slam’ records that the effort proved to be in vain.” The “uncouth rhythm” is, in fact, a combination

Variation 8. “W.N.” (Allegretto, G major, 6/8). The initials stand for Winifred Norbury, but the variation was inspired more by the 18th-century house where this lady (co-secretary of the Worcestershire Philharmonic Society) lived — in the words of musicologist Julian Rushton, the “epitome of an ideal civilisation in a rural environment.” The theme is played by the clarinets in gentle parallel sixths.

Variation 9. “Nimrod” (Adagio, E-flat major, 3/4). This is the most famous variation in the set, often performed separately in England as a memorial to deceased celebrities. “Nimrod” was August Jaeger, a German-born musician and Elgar’s closest friend. He worked for Novello, the publisher of Elgar’s music, and was the recipient of the composer’s above-quoted letter announcing the Variations as a work in progress. (Jäger or Jaeger means “hunter” in German, and Nimrod is the “mighty hunter” mentioned in Genesis 10:9.) Here, Elgar took the rests out of the original theme and created a hymn-like, soaring melody with a certain Beethovenian quality. Elgar and Jaeger shared a special love for Beethoven’s slow movements.

Variation 10. “Dorabella” (Intermezzo: Allegretto, G major, 3/4). Dora Penny was a young woman in her early twenties, to whom Elgar gave an affectionate nickname taken from Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte. She later recollected the day he played through the entire work for her: “My mind was in such a whirl of pleasure, pride and almost shame that he should have written anything so lovely about me.” This movement is less a “variation” strictly speaking than a lyrical intermezzo; its melody is only very distantly related to the original theme.

Variation 11. “G.R.S.” (Allegro di molto, G minor, 2/2).

“The first few bars were suggested by his great bulldog Dan (a well-known character) falling down the steep bank into the River Wye (bar 1); his paddling up stream to find a landing place (bars 2 and 3); and his rejoicing bark on landing (second half of bar 5).

G.R.S. said ‘set that to music.’ I did; here it is.”

Variation 12. “B.G.N.” (Andante, G minor, 4/4). Basil Nevinson was a cellist who, with Steuart-Powell (variation 2), often played trios with Elgar, a violinist. Variation 13. “***” (Romanza: Moderato, G major, 4/4).

The identity of the person behind the asterisks is the first, and smaller, enigma in Elgar’s work. Elgar himself only said that the “asterisks take the place of the name of a lady who was, at the time of composition, on a sea voyage. The drums suggest the distant throb of the engines of a liner . . .” Because some early manuscript sketches include the initials L.M.L., it is often assumed to refer to Lady Mary Lygon, an acquaintance of Elgar’s who was a member of the aristocracy, but several people who knew Elgar intimated that the variation had to do instead with a youthful “romanza” of the composer’s. The music is lyrical and gentle and, like variation 10, another female portrait, is only tenuously related to the theme, if at all. It contains a quote from Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, played by the first clarinet.

Variation 14. “E.D.U.” (Finale: Allegro Presto, G major, 4/4). “Edu” was the nickname Alice Elgar had given to her husband, who disguised it as a set of initials to camouflage the fact that the last variation was a self-portrait. The theme is turned here into a march with a sharp rhythmic profile. There are two slower, lyrical episodes, after which the work ends with a grandiose climax.

IN THE CE NTURY AND MORE

since its first performance, many attempts have been made to elucidate Elgar’s words about what “large theme” may lie behind (or underneath or within) his “Enigma” Variations.

Musical sleuths have tried to match the melodic outlines of different tunes with Elgar’s theme. Among those that have been proposed are “Auld lang Syne” (a suggestion Elgar himself rejected), the slow movement of Beethoven’s “Pathétique” Sonata, various earlier works by Elgar himself, and, more recently, the slow movement of Mozart’s “Prague” Symphony.

Others, knowing of Elgar’s interest in games and puzzles in general, have searched for answers in ciphers, equating let-

ters with musical notes after the model of Bach’s use of his own name spelled in notes.

Others still have thought that the “larger theme” is not a musical one but some larger religious or philosophical issue.

Finally, there are those who opine that the whole thing is a joke or a “leg-pull,” to quote an expression used by the famous musicologist and critic Ernest Newman. William Reed, who was probably as close to Elgar as anyone, wrote: “He was himself the enigma.” Julian Rushton, author of the Cambridge Musical Handbook about Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, has elaborated on this by saying that “the theme . . . may represent Elgar as he saw himself.”

In any case, it is certain that the enigma will never be solved, as no suggested solution is likely to be proven conclusively now, so many years after the composer’s death. And this is probably a good thing, for any definitive answer would mean the end of a great mystery — which can too often be a letdown.

One almost wishes Elgar hadn’t said anything about a “larger theme,” especially if he wasn’t ever going to reveal what it was. But this very ambivalence was central to his personality — he was at the same time an extroverted Romantic, eager to express his innermost feelings, and a reserved, very private man who would not allow anyone to know him completely. (The “Enigma” Variations were not the only time he made personal allusions whose full meaning he kept to himself — a similar mystery lies embedded in the music for his Violin Concerto.)

For Elgar, communication and secrecy, confession and reticence are inseparable, and it is in part this unique co-existence of opposites that makes the “Enigma” Variations unusual and uniquely pleasurable.

Student attendance continues to grow at Severance Hall As The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2013-14 season has gotten underway, more Student Advantage Members, Frequent Fan Card holders, Student Ambassadors, and student groups are contributing to the continued success of these programs.

The Orchestra’s ongoing Student Advantage Program provides opportunities for students to attend concerts at Severance Hall and Blossom through discounted ticket offers. Membership is free to join and rewards members with discounted ticket purchases. For this season, a record 6,000 students have joined.

The Student Frequent Fan Card was introduced a year ago with great success. The program is continuing to grow, with the number of Frequent Fan Card holders tripling so far this season over 2012-13. Priced at $50, the Fan Card offers students unlimited single tickets (one ticket per card holder) to weekly classical subscription concerts all season long.

The Student Ambassador program is also growing. These young volunteers help to promote the Orchestra’s concert offerings and student programs directly on campuses across Northeast Ohio.

Also this year, a group of Student Marketing Advisors was formed to help the Orchestra incorporate student feedback and insight to programs, and give local marketing majors a chance to work closely with the Orchestra’s sales team.

In addition, attendance through Student Group sales are also bringing in more and more young people to Cleveland Orchestra concerts. From as far as Toronto and Nashville, these groups make up an integral part of the overall success toward generating participation and interest among young people.

All of these programs are supported by The Cleveland Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences, through the Alexander and Sarah Cutler Fund for Student Audiences. The Center for Future Audiences was created with a $20 million lead endowment gift from the Maltz Family Foundation to develop new generations of audiences for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Northeast Ohio.

Each season’s Family Concert series at Severance Hall offers world-class music with outstanding singers, actors, mimes, and more to families from across Northeast Ohio. Last season’s “Under the Sea” concert featured music from Disney’s The Little Mermaid with The Singing Angels.

Through the PNC Musical Rainbows series at Severance Hall, Cleveland Orchestra musicians introduce nearly 10,000 preschoolers each year to the instruments of the orchestra.

More than 1,250 talented youth musicians have performed as members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra in the quarter century since the ensemble’s founding in 1986. The Cleveland Orchestra Center for Future Audiences T H E C L E V E L A N D O R C H E S T R A ’s Center for Future Audiences was estab-

lished to fund programs to develop new generations of audiences for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Northeast Ohio. The Center was created in 2010 with a $20 million lead endowment gift from the Maltz Family Foundation. Centerfunded programs focus on addressing economic and geographic barriers to attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts at Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center. Programs include research, introductory offers, targeted discounts, student ticket programs, and integrated use of new technologies.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s catalog of recordings continues to grow. The newest DVD features Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony recorded live in the Abbey of St. Florian in Austria under the direction of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst in 2012 and released in May 2013.

Released in 2012, Dvořák’s opera Rusalka on CD, recorded live at the Salzburg Festival, elicited the reviewer for London’s Sunday Times to praise the performance as “the most spellbinding account of Dvořák’s miraculous score I have ever heard, either in the themiraculou atre or on record. . . . I doubt this music can be better played than by the Clevelanders, the most ‘European’ of the American orchestras, with wind and brass soloists to die for and a string sound of superlative warmth and sensitivity.” Other recordings released in recent years include two under the baton of Pierre Boulez and a third album of Mozart piano concertos with Mitsuko Uchida, whose first Cleveland Orchestra Mozart album won a Grammy Award in 2011.

the world’s most beautiful concert halls, Severance Hall has been home to The Cleveland Orchestra since its opening on February 5, 1931. After that first concert, a Cleveland newspaper editorial stated: “We believe that Mr. Severance intended to build a temple to music, and not a temple to wealth; and we believe it is his intention that all music lovers should be welcome there.” John Long Severance (president of the Musical Arts Association, 1921-1936) and his wife, Elisabeth, donated most of the funds necessary to erect this magnificent building. Designed by Walker & Weeks, its elegant

Georgian exterior was constructed to harmonize with the classical architecture of other prominent buildings in the University Circle area. The interior of the building reflects a combination of design styles, including Art Deco, Egyptian Revival, Classicism, and Modernism. An extensive renovation, restoration, and expansion of the facility was completed in January 2000. In addition to serving as the home of The Cleveland Orchestra for concerts and rehearsals, the building is rented by a wide variety of local organizations and private citizens for performances, meetings, and gala events each year.

BE FO R E T H E CO NC E R T GARAGE PARKING AND PATRON ACCESS Pre-paid parking for the Campus Center Garage can be purchased in advance through the Ticket Office for $15 per concert. This pre-paid parking ensures you a parking space, but availability of pre-paid parking passes is limited. To order prepaid parking, call the Severance Hall Ticket Office at 216-231-1111.

Parking can be purchased for the at-door price of $11 per vehicle when space in the Campus Center Garage permits. However, the garage often fills up well before concert time; only ticket holders who purchase pre-paid parking passes are ensured a parking space. Overflow parking is available in CWRU Lot 1 off Euclid Avenue, across from Severance Hall; University Circle Lot 13A on Adelbert Road; and the Cleveland Botanical Garden.

FRIDAY MATINEE PARKING

For our patrons’ convenience, an ATM is located in the Lerner Lobby of Severance Hall, across from the Cleveland Orchestra Store on the ground floor.

Due to limited parking availability for Friday Matinee performances, patrons are strongly encouraged to take advantage of convenient off-site parking and round-trip shuttle services available from Cedar Hill Baptist Church (12601 Cedar Road).

PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO, AND AUDIO RECORDING Audio recording, photography, and videography are strictly prohibited during performances at Severance Hall. As courtesy to others, please turn off any phone or device that makes noise or emits light.

REMINDERS Please disarm electronic watch alarms and turn off all pagers, cell phones, and mechanical devices before entering the concert hall. Patrons with hearing aids are asked to be attentive to the sound level of their hearing devices and adjust them accordingly. To ensure the listening pleasure of all patrons, please note that anyone creating a disturbance of any kind may be asked to leave the concert hall.

LATE SEATING Performances at Severance Hall start at the time designated on the ticket. In deference to the comfort and listening pleasure of the audience, late-arriving patrons will not be seated while music is being performed. Latecomers are asked to wait quietly until the first break in the program, when ushers will assist them to their seats. Please note that performances without intermission may not have a seating break. These arrangements are at the discretion of the House Manager in consultation with the conductor and performing artists.

SERVICES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES Severance Hall provides special seating options for mobility-impaired persons and their companions and families. There are wheelchair- and scooter-accessible locations where patrons can remain in their wheelchairs or transfer to a concert seat. Aisle seats with removable armrests are also available for persons who wish to transfer. Tickets for wheelchair accessible and companion seating can be purchased by phone, in person, or online.

As a courtesy, Severance Hall provides wheelchairs to assist patrons in going to and from their seats. Severance Hall is a firearms-free facility. No person may possess a firearm on the premises.

CHILDREN Regardless of age, each person must have a ticket and be able to sit quietly in a seat throughout the performance. Season subscription concerts are not recommended for children under the age of seven. However, Family Concerts and Musical Rainbow programs are designed for families with young children. Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra performances are recommended for older children.

T IC K E T SE RV IC ES TICKET EXCHANGES Subscribers unable to attend on a particular concert date can exchange their tickets for a different performance of the same week’s program.

Subscribers may exchange their subscription tickets for another subscription program up to five days prior to a performance. There will be no service charge for the five-day advance ticket exchanges.

If a ticket exchange is requested within 5 days of the performance, there is a $10 service charge per concert. Visit clevelandorchestra.com for details and blackout dates.

UNABLE TO USE YOUR TICKETS? Ticket holders unable to use or exchange their tickets are encouraged to notify the Ticket Office so that those tickets can be resold. Because of the demand for tickets to Cleveland Orchestra performances, “turnbacks” make seats available to other music lovers and can provide additional income to the Orchestra. If you return your tickets at least 2 hours before the concert, the value of each ticket will be treated as a tax-deductible contribution.

Patrons who turn back tickets receive a cumulative donation acknowledgement at the end of each calendar year.
