It is with great excitement that I welcome you to Cleveland Ballet’s production of a holiday favorite ballet, The Nutcracker. The story of The Nutcracker and the numerous productions that have been created have helped turn this ballet into an annual holiday tradition across the nation. Now, Cleveland has its own resident ballet company presenting and performing its own Nutcracker ballet! During last season, our humble production of this ballet was a total success, having all 5 performances sold out. From the moment we announced our return to Playhouse Square this season, all 7 performances scheduled were sold out within 5 weeks. Two additional shows were added and sold out within days. The City of Cleveland, their people, you the audience, have spoken and have clearly claimed ownership to your own production of The Nutcracker. It was here last year, it is here this year and it is here for years to come. We strongly believe every great city needs a great ballet company and now the city of Cleveland has proudly claimed ownership of a great ballet company, your very own Cleveland Ballet. Dear Cleveland Ballet Friends: Back in the 1980s, I was privileged to Chair the earlier version of Cleveland Ballet, and here I am again. The former Cleveland Ballet was an important artistic performing group on the Cleveland scene, but it moved to San Jose and is no more. Now we have a wonderful brand new Cleveland Ballet which was co-founded by Michael Krasnyansky, successful Russian businessman who has settled in the Cleveland area, and his wife Gladisa Guadalupe, a great dancer originally from Puerto Rico who is the Artistic Director of the new Cleveland Ballet. As this wonderful new Company experiences its fourth season here as a resident performance group at Playhouse Square, we have formed a strong Board of Directors in Cleveland now. We have all marveled at how the nurturing nature of Gladisa and her colleagues has attracted dancers from several different countries as part of this exciting Cleveland Ballet. As Michael is fond of saying, every major city deserves a great ballet company, and that is what Cleveland Ballet is becoming. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Gladisa Guadalupe Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gladisa Guadalupe started her training with Ballet de San Juan, becoming one of the company’s youngest members. At Ballet de San Juan Ms. Guadalupe studied under Lois and Carlos Serrano, Ana Garcia, Maria Carrera, Vanessa Ortiz, Ana Maria Castañon, Ramon Molina, Victor Huertas, Jose Pares and Miguel Campaneria. A Scholarship Alumna of the School of American Ballet, the official training academy of the New York City Ballet, Ms. Guadalupe studied under the celebrated George Balanchine, father of American ballet and of the modern ballet movement. She also studied under the School of American Ballet’s famed faculty members Stanley Williams, Andrei Kramarevsky, Alexandra Danilova, Irena Kosmovska, Antonia Tumkovsky, Kay Mazzo, Muriel Stuart, Elise Reiman, Suki Shorer, Robert Denvers, Richard Rapp, Madame Dubrovska, Madame Darvash and William Bergman.
Nuevo Mundo de Caracas (Caracas, Venezuela), The Cleveland – San Jose Ballet (San Jose, California and Cleveland, Ohio USA) and The Cleveland Ballet (Cleveland, Ohio USA). She has toured North and South America, Asia and Europe. The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Les Sylphides, Carmina Burana, Giselle, Don Quixote, Rodeo, Celebrations and Ode, Le Corsaire, Theme and Variations, Slavonic and Hungarian, Four Temperaments, Quicksilver, Cannonade, Escargot, Gaite Parisianne, Momentum, The Gift, US, Birds of Paradise, Serenade are all included in her Performance Repetoire.
After her studies Ms. Guadalupe forwarded to a career in professional ballet. She has performed under legendary choreographers George Ballanchine, Dennis Nahat, Ian Horvath, Margot Sappington, Ana Garcia, John Butler, Choo San Goh and Louis Falco.
After retiring from the stage, Ms. Guadalupe served as Director and Principle Teacher at The Cleveland Ballet School, the School of Cleveland Ballet. There she was credited for maintaining the school’s high quality of training and artistic standards. Concurrently, she acted as an Artistic and Company Teacher for Cleveland San Jose Ballet Company. She has also been an Adjunct Instructor for the Cecchetti Council of America, American Ballet Theater, Ballet De San Juan, Ballet San Jose, Ohio Ballet, Rochester School of Ballet and The University of Akron.
Ms. Guadalupe’s career as a Principal Dancer has included work with Ballet De San Juan (Puerto Rico), Ballet
Ms. Guadalupe has been recognized as a Distinguished Teacher in the Arts and for Promotion of Excellence in

the Arts by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Ms. Guadalupe has also served as a consultant for The Cleveland Orchestra, Playhouse Square Center, American Ballet Theatre, Cincinnati Ballet, Ballet San Jose, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The University of Akron, Jack and Jill of America, Danskin, The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and many other community organizations. She has also been a guest teacher for companies like Ballet Hispanico and Malpaso among others. Ms. Guadalupe has demonstrated success operating dance rehearsals and obtaining choreography objectives, excellent classical dance
movement coaching skills and student relationship experience. With a dynamic and practical approach to instruction she has assisted students in effective training and application of their objectives. Her success is attributed to her extensive arts experience and supplemented by her studies at Cleveland State University where she graduated in Psychology. In addition to the above mentioned accomplishments, in July of 2015 Guadalupe was invited by Peter Martins, former artistic director and chairman of faculty at School of American Ballet, official school of New York City Ballet, to serve on the Alumni Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion in which she is still active.

Cleveland Ballet Frosted Winter Night Gala February 23 at The Tudor Arms Hotel
CoppĂŠlia presented by Cleveland Ballet CoppĂŠlia is a comic ballet based on two stories written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Dr. Coppelius is a doctor who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village young man, becomes infatuated with it and pushes aside his true love Swanhilda. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life, and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor. Choreographed for Cleveland Ballet by world renowned Spanish choreographer, RamĂłn Oller, this one-and-a-half length production is suited for audiences of all ages and is brought back to Cleveland audiences by popular demand. Our Story Act One On a snowy and very cold winter evening, a skillful toy maker and his apprentice are putting together the finishing touches on the gifts they will bring to the annual holiday party of the Grimaldi family. Unique, mystical, and rare presents will bring illusion, fantasy and imagination to children and adults. On Christmas Eve, the Grimaldi family’s living room is alive with activity as everyone is preparing for the annual holiday party. The nanny, Antonia, keeps a watchful eye over the children, Caroline and Albert, as they finish decorating the tree. Once all of the decorations are put in place, everyone gathers at the parlor to greet all of their guests. Startled by a noise, Caroline looks towards the fireplace to see a mouse running through the parlor. Quickly she runs to join the others in welcoming their guests.
lovely dress. Tired, she falls asleep on the couch and slips into a nightmare. As the family’s Christmas tree grows, the parlor fills with mice led by a Mouse King, while toy soldiers spring to life, with Caroline’s beloved Nutcracker doll as their leader. Caroline quickly realizes that the Nutcracker is in danger and decides to take charge, injuring the Mouse King. Caroline faints, and her dream takes a new direction. Aunt Sofia presents her with the Nutcracker doll, now transformed into a Prince. Caroline and the Prince are taken by Aunt Sofia to the Land of Snow where they are welcomed by dancing snowflakes. Floating angels lead the way for Caroline and the Prince on a journey to magical lands.
As the party grows festive, Caroline and Albert’s godfather, Drosselmeyer, suddenly appears. A skillful toymaker, Drosselmeyer has brought handmade gifts for everyone attending the party. One gift, made especially for the Grimaldi home, is a Nutcracker doll dressed as an attractive soldier.
Act Two Traveling to magical lands in a hot air balloon, Caroline and the Prince are greeted by Spaniards, Chinese dancers and a friendly dragon, an Arabian princess and her slave, and Russian Matryoshka Dolls. As the fairy-tale journey continues, Aunt Sofia and Drosselmeyer bring Caroline and the Prince to a beautiful garden where aromatic flowers dance a lovely waltz.
Drosselmeyer’s apprentice has developed into a very handsome young man, gaining the attention of all the young girls, especially Caroline.
The fairy-tale dream culminates with the garden’s King and Queen performing an exquisite pas de deux in their honor.
Caroline’s favorite aunt, Sofia, makes an unanticipated entrance bringing unique gifts to her favorite niece. Her four sons have just arrived from an academy school and have grown to be polite and good-mannered children.
Back in the parlor, mama and papa find Caroline asleep on the couch with the Nutcracker doll in her arms and wearing the dress Aunt Sofia brought to Caroline.
As the evening grows late, guests begin leaving and the Grimaldi family retires for a winter’s snowy night. Curious Caroline returns to the parlor to get the beautiful nutcracker doll and her

Alexandra Brin Marina Kogan Snow backdrop designed by Alexandra Brin and hand painted by Marina Kogan Alexandra Brin, a native of Chisinäu, Moldova, has taken the path of a professional artist since the age of 17. Having succeeded in a broad range of endeavors (from fashion designs, to creating movie and show posters, to illustrating a children’s magazine) Alexandra went on to receive a formal art education at the Chisinäu Art Design School. Her critically acclaimed and highly evocative Holocaust series has been tapped by the US Postal Service for the Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemorative envelope issued in 1997. Alexandra is equally at ease with

pens, watercolors or mixed media. Her works have appeared at numerous solo and group exhibitions at prestigious galleries across the United States and are enjoyed in private collections all over the world. Alexandra joined Cleveland Ballet in 2017. Marina Kogan graduated from Cleveland Institute of Art with a BFA (5-year program). Prior to studing at CIA, she studied at the Grekhov Art Academy in Odessa, Ukraine. Her notable mural example is The Original Dave's Cosmic Subs: she designed and painted the original "Rock and Roll Heaven" ceiling of the original Chagrin Falls location, as well as the walls, life-size portrait of John Lennon in the space; and designed the "Psychedelic Script" - LOGO of the Daves Cosmic Subs. She has worked with Burntwood Tavern group and holds Art Parties / paint nights, art lessons, and does various free-lance work.

School of Cleveland Ballet Founded in 2000...celebrating 18 years
As the official training academy of Cleveland Ballet, School of Cleveland Ballet has been recognized as Northeast Ohio’s finest school for ballet education and training. Under the watchful eye of Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe and the faculty, the school offers classical ballet training and a diverse dance-related curriculum to students of all ages, level and degrees of interest taught by resident faculty and guest teachers as well. Children Classes – ages 2-8 Introductory classes where students learn basic motor skills, develop coordination, increase their attention span, musicality and rhythm along with participating in the Year End Presentation. Ages 6-8 begin to learn more complex ballet combinations to prepare them for pre-professional division. Pre-Professional Division – ages 8-18 The keystone of the School, this program trains the next generation of professional dancers, which will consist of the core dancers for the Cleveland Ballet Company. Students will be invited to perform at least twice per year. Trainee Program – ages 18-22 Cleveland Ballet’s Trainee Program is a unique two-year program that challenges aspiring professional ballet dancers to put the finishing touches on their training while performing with Cleveland Ballet’s professional dancers. Adult Dance – ages 21+ A choreography class designed to dance. Adults will warm up, learn choreography and dance the hour away. This class is not a fitness or training class, just a dance class. Dance Chance Cleveland In 2015, School of Cleveland Ballet embarked on an exciting new journey. They began a dance education outreach program with Warrensville Heights Schools. This new program allows students the opportunity to experience ballet. Today, this program consists of three school districts, Warrensville Heights, Maple Heights and Bedford City Schools. Students come to not only learn ballet, but they learn self-discipline, respect, history and an appreciation for the arts. This experience is an outstanding and truly unique opportunity for the students.
