LBCSIhashadaverybusysummerandanexcitingstarttothenewschool-year.We haveusedmomentumgainedoverthesummertokickstartouractivitiessuchas CyberPatriot,ourschoolpresentationroadmap,andourGuestSpeakerSeries.Weare veryexcitedtosharemorebelow!

SummerEvents

LBCSIʼsmembershavebeenhardatworkgettingpreparedfortheacademic year.Hereʼswhattheyʼveaccomplished.

Certifications

Weʼrehappytosharethatninemembershavereceivedindustrycertifications thissummer.CharlieHaleʻ23,BrendanMcLaughlinʻ23,AndrewHillʻ23,TeddyMarine ʻ24,JamesKellerʻ24,andHenryCraigʻ24receivedCompTIAʼsN10-008NetworkPlus Certification,BenjaminScholtesʻ23receivedMicrosoʼsAZ-800Certification,and NicholasJacobʻ23receivedCiscoʼs200-301CCNACertification.Certificationssuchas theseareindustrystandardmetricsforskillincybersecurity;infact,mostinternships andemployersonlyacceptcertifiedapplicants.Certificationsarechallengingto obtain,requiringmanyhoursofstudyandastronggrasponcybersecurity.Weʼrevery proudofourDonsʼaccomplishmentsandlookforwardtofuturecertifications.

SummerInternships

LBCSIʼsJackWachterʼ24andAnshulChelapurathʻ23havebeenworkingthis summerparticipatingininternships.JackworkedatT.RowePrice,acornerstone partnerofLBCSI,learningaboutproducttestingandqualitycontrol,andAnshul workedattheNSAʼsthinktankDreamport,reverseengineeringsmartdevicesand developingintrusiondetectionsoware.DreamPortisacyberinnovation, collaboration,andprototypingfacilitymadebytheUnitedStatesCyberCommandto helpdeveloptheUnitedStatesʼcybersecurityprograms.

Thissummer,wehostedourfourthCybersecurityCamp.Consistingoftwo groupsaged10to15andhaving40campers,thisyearʼscybercampwasablast. Camperslearnedthebasicsofcybersecurityandgainedabetterappreciationforthe technologyaroundthem.Mr.Morrill,withhelpfromJamesKellerʻ24,TeddyMarineʻ24 andCaseyNazelrodʻ25,taughttopicsincludinglearningaboutoperatingsystems, HTML,SSH,andOpenSourceIntelligence.Attheendoftheweek,thecamp culminatedinacybersecurityscavengerhunt,whichtestedtheskillstheylearned throughoutthecamp.Werunthiscamptoincreaseinterestincybersecurityand inspirestudentstoworkhard.Weareveryhappywithhowitturnedoutandexcitedto doitagainnextyear.

StudentSpotlight:GraceBrehm

GraceBrehmisasenioratNotreDamePrepcurrentlyparticipatinginLBCSI. Thissummer,shewroteAnIntroductiontoComputerScienceforYoungPeople,abook givingasimpleoverviewofComputerSciencetomakethefieldmoreaccessibleto students,suchasphysicalnetworks,algorithms,theInternet,andnumbersystems.

LBCSI Camps

Weʼreproudofwhatshehasaccomplishedandifyouareayoungpersoninterestedin computerscience,orifyousimplywantanoverviewofthefield,thisbookiscertainly agoodoption.AstorydonebyWBALonhercanbefoundhere;additionally,ifyouare interestedinpurchasingit,herbookcanbefoundhere.

AlumniSpotlight

With11yearsofLBCSIgraduates,weprideourselvesontheachievementsof ouralums.Defconisahackingandcomputerscienceconventionbringinginover 30,000attendeeseveryyear;this summer,wewerepleasedtosee LBCSIʼsownChrisRodriguezʻ13and JeremyKrachʻ13winDefconʼsOSINT CapturetheFlagcompetition.OSINT, orOpenSourceIntelligence,isa particularlydifficultpartof cybersecurity;itrequirescompetitors toscourthewebforexceedingly obscureanddifficult-to-findanswers. ChrisandJeremyaretwoofLBCSIʼsoriginalmembers,havinghelpedstartandgrow

theclub.TheircontributionstoLoyolaBlakefieldCyberareimmeasurableandweare happytoseetheircontinuedsuccess.

FirstTrainingDays

Astheopeningmonthofschoolbegins,wehavebeenexcitedtowelcome ourbackourCyberDonstothelabs!Ourreturningmembersbroughtarenewed energyandimmediatelypickedupwhereweleofflastschoolyear.Wealso welcomed40newCyberDonstotheranks!Theenergyatthefirstmeetinghas beenapositivesignandhasshownthattheseyoungmendesiretolearnnew skills.Theeagernessofournewstudentswasabletobequantifiedwiththe formationofanewCyberPatriotteamonthefirstday!

Additionally,wearethrilledthatstudentsfromNotreDamePrepwillbe joiningustotrainthisacademicyear.Theywillusesimilartechniquestousto helpgrowtheCyberSecurityClubatNDP.

SocialMediaPresentations

DuringthemonthsofAugustandSeptember,LBCSIʼsleadershipteamand Mr.Morrillhadtheopportunitytospeakwithawidevarietyofpeopleabout socialmediaawarenessandraisingtheircyberIQ.Thepresentationsbeganwith threedaysofspeakingandbuildingworkshopswithourreturningfreshmen class.Thetopicsrangedfromsendingatweetfromasmartfridge,todiscussing appropriateactionsonline,andunderstandinghowreputationcanbebuiltand destroyedonline.

Recently,CharlieHaleʻ23,NoahMorrayeʻ23,andMr.Morrillhadan opportunitytoholdafiresidechatwiththeparentsofourmiddleschoolabout onlinepresenceandphoneusage.Thechatwasaresoundingsuccesswith

parentsandpresentingmembersactivelydiscussingproblemsandthebest courseofaction.

Lookingtowardsthefuture,wewillhavethedistinctpleasureoftraveling toTheHarfordDaySchoolandSt.StephenCathloicSchool.Theseopportunities allowourpresentingteamtohelpeducatetheyoungmindsofsomanystudents onhowtobesafeandsecureonline.

CyberBattleofEstonia

Thisyear,LBCSIhasbeenpresentedwithauniqueopportunity.Through theNSAʼscivilianorganizationDreamport,fiveofourtopmembersandalumni aged15-24havebeeninvitedtorepresenttheUnitedStatesandcompeteinthe annualCyberBattleofEstoniainOctober.TheCyberBattleofEstoniaisa CapturetheFlagbasedcompetitionthatsetsteamsfromaroundEuropeagainst eachotherinthespiritofgrowinginterestforcybersecurityinyoungpeople.We areproudtoannouncethatourteamisasfollows:AnshulChelapurathʻ23,Jack Wachterʻ24,MatthewFleshnerʻ21,TeddyMarineʻ24,andJakeSanʻ19.The teamwillbemakingstopsinTallinnandTartutomeetwitheducators, dignitaries,andotherstudents.
