FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, As we draw closer to the end of the calendar year, I’d like to recognize those who so generously support our mission. Every gift to Loyola is an investment in the future—not only in the growth of our Dons, but in the faith that their gifts and talents will be animated on behalf of a better world.

As you know, we are in the midst of our most ambitious fundraising effort in school history. Ignite: The Campaign for Loyola Blakefield will result in the construction of a new Innovative Learning Center, significant investment in our endowment, and increased annual giving. With a goal to surpass $27 million by December 31, efforts are still very much underway to make the vison of Ignite a reality. You can view my latest Ignite update here.

In early November, I had the pleasure of joining a group of our students at the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice—the largest annual Catholic social justice gathering in the United States. Loyola has been represented at this event for nearly a decade. In addition to hearing from inspiring speakers, it gave me an extraordinary opportunity to witness how today’s youth are so highly engaged in issues within our borders and across the globe. They are truly living the words of the Gospel as Christ calls us not only to serve those within our reach, but to extend ourselves well beyond our own life experiences.

As I proceed further into my 11th year at Loyola, I am proud to be a member of a community that transforms faith into action and unites in shared values. We are one Loyola family, and I can’t imagine a better place to call home.

early 250 members of the Loyola Blakefield community gathered for the 2018 President’s Club Reception on October 4th. The event also served as our official kickoff of Ignite: The Campaign for Loyola Blakefield. During the event, President Anthony Day presented the inaugural James F. Salmon, S.J. Award.

Named in honor of former Loyola President Fr. Jim Salmon, the award recognizes an individual or family within the Loyola Blakefield Community who, through their generosity, has made a tremendous impact on our school.

The inaugural recipients of the award were Bill ’78 & Lisa Stromberg, P ’09, ’11 and Joe & Suzie Sullivan, P ’01, ’04, ’06. Bill and Joe are serving as CoChairs of Ignite and previously served as members of Loyola’s Board of Trustees with Sullivan serving a term as Board Chair.

“During my time at Loyola, I have had the privilege of getting to know the Sullivan and Stromberg families,” said Day. “They are true champions of our mission and tremendously dedicated to ensuring that the school continues to thrive.”

Salmon, S.J. Award Bill and Joe addressed the crowd together to share their enthusiasm and support of the progress made on Ignite. The presentation of the award came as a surprise at the conclusion of the formal program. “Lisa and I were surprised and delighted to receive an award in Fr. Salmon’s honor,” said Stromberg. “Loyola has meant a lot to our family and we are happy to give back to such a special place.”

Fr. Salmon was a guest at the event and briefly addressed the crowd and remarked that what makes the mission of Loyola so impactful and brings donors back is the dedication of the faculty who are deeply committed to the formation of young men.

“During my time at Loyola, I have had the privilege of getting to know the Sullivan and Stromberg families,” said Day. “They are true champions of our mission and tremendously dedicated to ensuring that the school continues to thrive.”

“Suzie and I are truly humbled to receive this inaugural award and especially grateful to be honored alongside Bill and Lisa Stromberg,” said Sullivan.

“We are very happy to be able to give back to Loyola, which has been and remains such an important part of our lives and the Sullivan family.”

Fr. Salmon is currently a member of the chemistry and theology departments at Loyola University in Maryland and a Senior Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University. He received B.S. and M.E. degrees in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. Before becoming a Jesuit he served in the US Navy and four years as a foundry engineer with the International Nickel Company.

He became a Jesuit in 1950 and received an M.A. in philosophy from Boston College, a Ph.D. in physical inorganic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, and an S.T.B. in theology from Woodstock College. He served as President of Loyola Blakefield for six years, from 1973 – 1979, and is credited with starting the first Development Department at Loyola, laying the foundation for the fundraising efforts that guide us through today.

NEW PHILANTHROPY CLUB EMBODIES MEN FOR OTHERS SPIRIT

T

he slogan “Men for Others” runs deep through the heart of this school, whether it’s written on the walls, found through our daily service trips, or in the random acts of kindness between our Dons.

That is why it is no surprise that one of the newest clubs on campus this fall is the Philanthropy Club.

The idea for the club came about as Director of the Loyola Fund Brian Plunkett ’76, P ’14, was visiting with a member of the Development Office at Notre Dame Preparatory School who mentioned to him that they had a Philanthropy Club of their own. “I’ve heard rumblings that we have kids here who struggle to afford lunch, and I have a problem with that,” said Plunkett. “So, I thought this club would be a great way to not only help our fellow Dons who need it, but to introduce our students to the fact that this need exists here, and fundraising can help.”

Plunkett made an announcement during Senior Orientation at the beginning of September, and he was amazed by the immediate response to the club. “I think we had about fifteen guys sign up right there on the spot.”

Two of those students were seniors Bradley Floyd and Robbie Niehaus. “When Mr. Plunkett spoke to us about this new club and this need to help our fellow Dons, I didn’t even realize how much of an issue it was that students here don’t have enough money for Loyola events like going on Kairos, or getting their junior ring, or getting their tuxedo for a dance,” said Niehaus.

“It’s Loyola’s mission to be men for others, and we have to be able to help our own first in order to help others outside of our community,” said Floyd.

The club’s primary source of fundraising comes from selling concessions at sporting events as club members grilled burgers and hotdogs during soccer games this fall and sell Chick-fil-A sandwiches during basketball games. “We figured kids are hungry because there are only vending machines to get food here after school,” said Niehaus.

The club has already found success in helping others on campus. “We just funded several students’ lunches for retreats,” said Floyd. “It’s has been really eye-opening to see how our efforts can go such a long way towards helping our own brothers.”

Plunkett stresses that anonymity is key to the success of the club. “We don’t want any names. I have department heads contact me if they know of a student who needs funds whether it be for a retreat, a dance, or lunch, and I send the funds to them and they give it to the student or parent directly. If we can do that for just a couple of kids here, the club is worth it.”

One of the most important aspects of the club is raising awareness among students that there is a need here for helping other Dons. “I don’t think a lot of our Dons know that there are students here who need financial assistance, just because it’s a private school and you need

to pay to come here,” said Niehaus. “I feel like the more people we can make aware of this, the more we will be able to grow as a community.”

“I think it’s important for all of our students to know that not everyone is like they are,” added Floyd. “Everyone here has a need that we don’t necessarily know about, and If we take care of each other, then we can make a better community for everyone.”

Eventually, the club hopes to broaden both its fundraising efforts and its reach. “We have talked about possibly hosting a dance and having a day of giving among students here,” said Floyd. “We’d also like to work with other clubs to help them raise money.”

Plunkett would even like to send tickets home to families to attend Loyola events such as A Taste of Blakefield or a school play. “I want everyone to look at Loyola as more than just a place they send their son to get an education. it is a living, breathing community that benefits the entire family.”

HOCKEY IN THE HOOD On any given Saturday and Sunday between the months of November and March, you can find Mark Conner ‘77 in Patterson Park lacing up his skates and teaching a ragtag group of inner-city kids the fundamentals of a sport he has lived and breathed for more than 50 years.

Mark grew up entrenched in the Baltimore hockey scene.

One of eight children, he was thrust onto the ice at a young age thanks to his father, Joseph, who was a member of the Loyola High School Class of 1947 and varsity ice hockey captain. Unfortunately, before Mark even had a chance to don a Loyola sweater, the rink that hosted both high school hockey and the Baltimore Clippers in Carlin’s Park burned down in 1956. That was it for high school hockey in Baltimore until the 1980s. Instead, Mark pursued his passion for hockey through what was then known as the Baltimore Boys Hockey Program, which used the Orchard Ice Rink off Joppa Road and the outdoor rink at Memorial Stadium.

“Clubs and extracurriculars at Loyola were few and far between in the mid to late seventies,” recalled Mark.

“I played JV lacrosse for one year, and I remember I had to hitchhike home to Glen Arm after practice on a Friday. I ended up walking the entire way and missed hockey practice that night, so I had to sit out the first period of our game the next day. Needless to say, that was the end of my lacrosse career.”

It was during his time at Loyola where Mark also developed a strong desire to serve others. “I was very influenced by the more socially progressive teachers who were here during the mid-seventies, which was pretty much all of them,” said Mark, citing Brother Paul Cawthorne, Ralph Moore, and Joseph Ciancaglini among others. The service requirement was fairly new at Loyola at the time, and not many other schools had it as a requirement for graduation.

Serving at the St. Ambrose Outreach Center in Pimlico during his junior year really had a profound impact. “I really liked being of help to others, particularly kids, so I was always trying to find something like that going forward.” To this day, he still participates in alumni service projects and attends the occasional alumni board meeting and homecoming at Loyola.

Mark went on to earn a business degree from then Loyola College and was immediately hired by the local brokerage firm Alex. Brown, where he was trained to be a municipal bond trader.

He remained in the securities business for 25 years before he decided to start his own venture as an expert witness in the securities litigation field, which he was been doing for the past 10 years. “I started this consulting practice called Second Chair, which quickly turned into something that I did not anticipate working on behalf of investors who have lost money.”

He also quickly realized that the only way he was going to get kids out to the rink was to recruit them right off the streets. “If you just set up a registration table somewhere, no one knows how to find it, and no one knows that it’s even there that day.” He decided to partner with other organizations that were also having trouble finding kids. This is how Mark met Noel Acton, Director of The Tender Bridge, a non-profit that provides physical and emotion support for some of Baltimore’s most neglected inner-city kids, while connecting them with existing programs and facilities throughout the city. Mark and Noel would drive up and down specific blocks in East Baltimore because they knew that’s where they were going to find kids with addicted moms and no dads. “It’s not a cliché, it’s a reality, and there are thousands of kids living in those circumstances in Baltimore City, so we just want to give them a place to go for a few hours. Kids are very hungry to get out of the hood and have something to do.”

In the aftermath of the “Miracle on Ice” during the 1980 Winter Olympics, youth hockey grew like never before in Baltimore, and the Baltimore Boys Hockey Program became Baltimore Youth Hockey. Each year begins in November with a few weeks of rigorous practices and learning the fundamentals. By the end of December, they are inviting teams to come and scrimmage. “In addition to Loyola’s JV team, we’ve have several local men’s teams come and play, which is fun because the boys know it’s a slightly bigger challenge, and the men who come to play understand the best way to go about playing a team of younger guys.” The goal of the program is not to produce hockey players, it’s just to give kids a chance to express themselves. “Physical movement is their greatest form of self-expression,” said Mark. “Almost all of them are football players, but they quickly realize there is a lot more to hockey than football, so once they begin to master the basics, they begin to feel good about themselves.”

“He heard about our program and invited me to bring up some of our guys to work out with them in August.

These guys skate twice a day in the summer, that’s how serious they are.” Mark brought three of his fastest skaters. “I’d never seen anything like this kind of hockey practice, but our kids hung in there and each one of them was able to get the puck on their stick in front of the net and bury a goal. You could see the excitement on their faces. On the way home, one of the boys said to me, ‘Coach Mark, those boys was really nice.’ In the hood, ‘nice’ means very talented. I said, ‘Yeah, but they skate twice a day, we only get once a week,’ and he replied ‘No, Coach Mark, they was really nice, they made us feel like part of their team.’ And I said to myself, that is exactly what we were trying to do today.”

One of the challenges they face is not being registered with USA Hockey as they would rather spend the registration money on ice time, lunches, and field trips. Unfortunately, many teams won’t play them for that reason as they would prefer to play against teams that are USA Hockey affiliated. Mark recalled being invited to play against a nationally-ranked team outside of Philadelphia called the Valley Forge Minutemen, coached by East Baltimore native Terrence Johnson.

For Mark and the coaching staff, their duties often go above and beyond what happens on the ice. “In our first year, there was one kid who became the model for who we knew we should be serving through this program. His name is Martin, and he had lead poisoning and incredible behavioral issues—he would have violent outbursts. He had six siblings, no dad, and his mom was an addict.”

Mark recalled one time when Martin picked up a steel chair and threw it at another kid. “It was then when we realized we were there for more than just hockey. We needed to have a plan for intervention when there was a meltdown.” So, they designated the penalty box as the Chill Zone and when a kid was becoming disruptive or a threat, they would physically intervene, get ahold of him, make sure he was calm, and take him to the Chill Zone where a volunteer would sit with him and talk if they wanted to. “It’s not usually something going on at the rink that day, it’s usually something that happened at home or school the week prior. Kids who grow up in Baltimore face incredible challenges from lead poisoning, to addiction, to violence in the home and on the street, and by the time a kid is six or seven years old, there’s a lot that needs to be undone that might not get undone.”

For Mark, the most important aspect of this entire program is giving these kids a better sense of selfworth. “The economic need that drives them to rob or steal is not something we can address,” said Mark.

“However, mentoring is the most important part of our program—giving kids attention or answering questions about how to get an ID or a job.” Mark, Noel, and the other coaches will even go so far as taking them to job interviews, advocating for them at IEP meetings, going to court with them, or even visiting them when they are incarcerated. “We get phone calls all the time. ‘Coach Mark, can you come get me?’ To the extent that our volunteers can do that, they will.”

The biggest hurdle the program faces each season is having enough funds for ice time. “As anyone involved in hockey knows, ice time in the Baltimore area is scarce,” said Mark. This is the first season in program history where they are now offering two sessions (Saturday and Sunday) for the older kids, and the cost of their ice time has doubled. “One hour per week is just not enough time to learn how to play hockey.”

They are hoping to host another one this year between Christmas and New Year’s Eve with more teams in order to fill the gap for two sessions this season.

Now in their 15th year of operation, they have also expanded to other activities outside of hockey, such as partnering with the Baltimore County Sailing Center in Essex. Over the summer, the kids learned to sail 15-foot dinghies. “There were certainly challenges with heavy winds some weeks and a lot of capsizing, and some of them had to conquer their fear of water, but they did a fantastic job,” said Mark. The lessons would take place at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday, followed by a group dinner, and then the volunteers would drop the kids off around 9:30 at night. “It was certainly a commitment for our coaches, but it was a good stretch of time to keep these kids occupied and off the streets during the summer months when they often have nothing else to do.”

Lastly, Mark invites any students from Loyola to come out to Patterson Park on Saturdays between 12 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. or Sundays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. “We welcome any Dons who might eventually hope to play on the varsity squad, but don’t have a team to skate with right now.” He also encourages spectators and volunteers. “Anyone can come and watch, and anyone can volunteer. There are no qualifications other than a desire to help.”

Over the years, Mark and Noel have gotten a little more organized and put together a board and some fundraising efforts. They work with an annual budget between $15,000 or $20,000 per season, a quarter of which comes from board members, and the rest comes from various grants from organizations. They also hosted their first men’s hockey tournament fundraiser last year, which netted them about $5,000 to cover ice time for one session for the entire season.

Stephen Nolan ’69 merged his law

practice with Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, LLC, a regional law firm with offices in Towson and Baltimore, on November 1. Nolan, who has had an established litigation practice in Towson for more than 40 years, will be Of Counsel in SGS’s Towson office.

Throughout his career, Nolan has been involved in a wide variety of complex litigation, class actions, and other cases. He served as Maryland counsel for the NFL Players Association, special counsel for CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield in a pharmaceutical class action, and lead counsel for Anne Arundel and Baltimore County Public Schools and Governments in the asbestos property damage litigation.

of Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, was named the 2018 Bell Award Recipient by Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic in November. This prestigious award is given to an individual or company which has provided tremendous support to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by granting the wishes of local children with critical illnesses. John hosted two Make-A-Wish opportunities this past year, as well as countless community bowling and kickball fundraisers across Baltimore to help raise funds to support Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic.

Raffi Wartanian ’04 launched

Letters for Peace (LFP) in Armenia and Azerbaijan this past summer in partnership with Davis Projects for Peace and the Eurasia Partnership Foundation. This mission of LFP is to foster dialogue between populations silenced by protracted conflict among their governments. This took the form of a workshop at the intersection of creative writing and conflict resolution whereby youth in each country wrote letters to one another articulating the hope and possibilities for a peaceful future.

FRANK P. FISCHER The Loyola Blakefield community is saddened by the passing of Mr. Frank Fischer. As the first person to facilitate the meaningful racial integration of Loyola in the 1960s and ‘70s, then-Jesuit Frank Fischer took bold steps toward recruiting and preparing African-American students for admission.

Frank was also instrumental in matching funding opportunities to ensure that those who might not otherwise have access to a Loyola education were fully supported. We honor his extraordinary legacy through the Frank P. Fischer Diversity Scholarship Fund and our Fischer Program, which serves highly motivated middle school-age students of color from Baltimore City and County in a three-year program to develop strong study skills and a focused approach to learning.
