Loyola Debuts First Mascot

This fall, Loyola Academy welcomed its first official mascot, Rowdy the Ramble (pronounced RAM-BULL). Decked out in a jersey and shorts, Rowdy burst into the East Gym during the Spirit Week pep rally in September and has been a fan favorite ever since. The vision of a mascot was brought to reality by Loyola's Student Council, and Rowdy is the official class gift of last year's graduates, the Class of 2022

The name stems from a cheer the cheerleading team uses to engage the student section: "Let’s get a little bit rowdy, Ramblers are rowdy!" Why a bull? As the national animal of Spain, a bull pays homage to the life and history of St Ignatius. The letters AMDG emblazoned on the shorts are unmistakably Jesuit, and the flames adorning the horns are a nod to St Ignatius' famour quote: "Go forth and set the world on fire. "

"I think the mascot was an essential additition to Loyola because not only does it bring joy to a whole new level at any game or activity, but the level of school pride has risen immensely as well," says Helena Kavanagh '23, who worked on last year's mascot committee. "Rowdy brings personality and character to the Loyola Ramblers wherever they go."

While auditions were held for Rowdy, the selected students are not made public.
