The certificate programs at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law offer a challenging course of study, spur collaboration with students and professors with similar interests, and help to distinguish graduates in the job market. Our programs also leave room for students to take other important courses.

LOYOLA UNIVERSITY NEW ORLEANS COLLEGE OF LAW • CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW The Environmental Law Certificate program is part of the Loyola Center for Environmental Law and Land Use. The center was created to address legal issues relative to economic development, protection of the environment, and the public’s role in environmental policy issues.

To be a great environmental lawyer, you have to be a great lawyer first. Loyola law graduates have a variety of national and international employment choices in the environmental field.

Requirements To earn the Environmental Law Certificate, students must complete Environmental Law, either Natural Resources Law or Land Use Law, and seven credits selected from an approved group of courses. Students must have a combined grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and with no individual grade below C. Approved Courses: Administrative Law (3 hrs.)

INTERNATIONAL LEGAL STUDIES The International Legal Studies Certificate program is designed to help prepare law students for professional careers in the emerging global economy. Students will develop a foundational understanding of the international legal order and are uniquely prepared for professional careers in the worldwide legal arena.

Requirements To earn the International Legal Studies Certificate, students must complete 10 credits selected from an approved group of courses.

Students may also take some of the certificate courses in summer study abroad programs offered in Austria, Hungary, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

TAX LAW The Tax Law Certificate is designed to give students an experience in basic tax law courses that will prepare them for an LL.M. in taxation or to practice tax law, either in the private sector or with the IRS or Department of Justice. In addition to the requirement of having 50 hours of VITA, this certificate program encourages students to pursue pro bono experiences in private practice after graduation. Over the last three years, all students who received a certificate in taxation have obtained their LL.M. in taxation, and have practiced tax law with the government or in private practice.

Requirements To earn the Tax Law Certificate, students must complete 12 credits of taxation classes selected from an approved group of courses. Students must maintain a B average or better in tax classes, obtain at least a graduating grade point average of 2.5. Students must also complete 50 hours, over two filing seasons, of volunteer work for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The Internal Revenue Service-designed program has sessions staffed by student volunteers under the direction of College of Law Associate Professor William Neilson and Budget Director Andy Piacun.

The prepared tax returns have produced more than $110,000 in earned income tax credit for taxpayers and $488,000 in total refunds.
