GIVE THANKS As a student at King’s College in Bristol TN, Henry Smith Jr. (b. 1952) decided that he only wanted to write songs for Christ. In 1978, he wrote “Give Thanks” in response to a sermon given by the pastor at Williamsburg New Testament Church, preaching on 2 Corinthians 6:10. Soon afterward, Henry and his future wife Cindy sang the song at the church on several occasions. A military couple attending the church took the song with them to Germany, where they were stationed. The song then developed a life of its own. While the song gained popularity and spread throughout the world, no one ever knew who the composer was. It was not until 1986 that a friend brought Smith a cassette tape of a recording of the song by Integrity Music, who had listed the author as “unknown.” Henry Smith contacted the publisher. They informed him that they had been trying to locate the composer because the song had been recorded more than fifty times and published in several collections. Henry Smith Jr. has composed approximately three hundred worship songs, but “Give Thanks” is the only one to be published and extensively recorded. Smith composed the song during a time of unemployment, financial insecurity and an uncertain future due to a degenerative visual impairment that would eventually lead to his becoming legally blind. No doubt he found strength in Paul’s words: “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor 12:10, NIV) “Give Thanks” is truly an international song of gratitude.
THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

UrbanPromise October Serving Partner UrbanPromise Camden is a Christ‑centered ministry, founded in 1988 by Dr. Bruce Main in Camden and serving one of our nation’s most economically challenged urban communities. It’s mission is to help Camden’s youth reach their full potential by providing safe, nurturing spaces where young people receive academic support, spiritual formation, leadership development, and year‑round mentoring, grounded in Christian faith. The organization operates: ● Two schools: CamdenForward School (K–8) and UrbanPromise Academy (9–12), known for small class sizes and strong graduation rates. ● After‑school programs and summer camps serving hundreds of children annually with academic enrichment, recreation, arts, and Bible study. ● Leadership and employment programs for teens through the StreetLeader initiative, offering paid roles, mentoring, and college/career preparation. ● Experiential programs such as UrbanTrekkers and BoatWorks, which build confidence, skills, and curiosity through outdoor exploration and hands‑on boat building. UrbanPromise engages hundreds of volunteers and interns each year and has inspired similar ministries worldwide through UrbanPromise International. The ministry relies on the partnership of churches, volunteers, and supporters who share a commitment to offering hope and opportunity to Camden’s youth. LPPC is supporting UrbanPromise Camden this year through both financial sponsorship and hands‑on service. 1. Child & Trekker Sponsorships - We are sponsoring three children and one Trekker for the 2026 program year. These sponsorships help provide year‑round academic support, mentoring, and leadership development for Camden youth. 2. Bookbag Donations – LPPC members packed and donated 32 bookbags for UrbanPromise’s school‑year programs, ensuring students begin the year with the tools they need to succeed. 3. Volunteer Opportunities -Those interested in exploring volunteer opportunities with UrbanPromise are encouraged to visit their website: http://www.urbanpromiseusa.org 4. Prayer Support - Please keep UrbanPromise’s staff, students, and families in your prayers as they continue their Christ-centered work in Camden.
