3. Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge— Take it to the Lord in prayer! Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.
Joseph Scriven, a young Irishman, completed his college education in 1844. He returned home to marry his sweetheart. He came home to find his bride-to-be tragically lying dead after falling off her horse. Later on, Scriven moved to Canada and fell in love again. Unfortunately, for the second time, his bride-to-be hit a horrible fate. She became ill and died weeks before their marriage. Scriven wrote a poem to his mother in Ireland to describe the tragedy he had faced. He spoke of how his deep friendship with Jesus, which he had cultivated through prayer, helped him get through the loss of his two loved ones. Instead of believing God was punishing him, Scriven thought God was his rock. The poem was published anonymously under the title "Pray Without Ceasing". Later in 1868, attorney Charles Converse set the text to music and changed the name to what we know it as today.
THE APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Back to School with Dignity: Days for Girls Eagleville by Bobbie Monaco September means back to school—new classrooms, new supplies, and new opportunities. But for girls experiencing period poverty, returning to school can bring another concern: Will I have the menstrual products I need to stay in class? As a core mission partner of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church, Days for Girls Eagleville works to ensure that girls and women have access to menstrual products, health education, and sustainable solutions—both here at home and around the world. Over the past year, our volunteers have gathered faithfully at LPPC and throughout our community to cut, sew, snap, assemble, and pack Days for Girls kits. Through the support of our volunteers, donors, and community partners, more than 2,500 menstruators were reached with menstrual products and health education. Our local outreach includes food pantries, WIC programs, schools, healthcare organizations, and community partners throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. And the work done at our sewing tables travels far beyond Pennsylvania. Our kits and support have reached Cameroon, Cuba, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Uganda, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe. Whether a kit travels across town or across the world, the goal is the same: providing the products, education, and confidence needed to manage menstruation with dignity.
Kit distribution in Cuba
Building Sustainable Change in Kenya This June, I returned to Kenya with the Blair in Kenya mission team, where I again had the privilege of working with our local Days for Girls Ambassadors of Women’s Health. At Dagu Thim Junior School, girls ages 12–15 received reusable menstrual kits made by the Days for Girls Kenya Enterprise, along with important health education. At Blair Educational Centre, girls in Grades 5–9 participated in education before receiving either a complete kit or replacement underwear based on their individual needs.
Kit distribution in Kenya
One girl told us her kit was the best gift she had ever received. Another shared that having her own menstrual supplies meant she would no longer have to depend on a boy offering to buy her disposable pads. Stories like these remind us that menstrual products can mean much more than managing a period—they can mean safety, dignity, and the ability to stay in school.
Most importantly, this work continues after we leave. Dorothy, Winnie, Zilper, Peace, and other trained Ambassadors provide education and distribute kits throughout the year. Our chapter purchases at least 500 kits annually from the Kenya Enterprise, supporting local women while creating a sustainable, community-led program. We are also changing the conversation with boys. Through Men Who Know, LPPC volunteer Rob Baeder taught boys at Blair about menstruation, respect, and reducing stigma. Two male Blair teachers are now trained to continue the program year-round, helping ensure that both girls and boys become part of lasting change.
$15 Can Help a Girl Stay in School As our own children and grandchildren return to school this September, we invite our LPPC family to remember that menstrual products are school supplies too. Just $15 purchases a complete Days for Girls kit for a girl returning to school. That kit can provide years of reusable menstrual protection and help give a girl the confidence to attend school throughout her period.
Kit distribution at Dagu Thim Junior School, a rural public school in Kenya
We are deeply grateful to LPPC for giving Days for Girls Eagleville a home and embracing this ministry as a core mission partner. Every volunteer hour, every stitch, every prayer, and every donation becomes part of a much larger story of dignity and opportunity.
This back-to-school season, consider giving $15 to help one more girl walk into her classroom with confidence. Together, we can help ensure that a period is never a reason to miss school. Donate to DFG girls my making a note on your check (made out to LPPC) or by purchasing a raffle ticket at the upcoming Women’s Tea!
HYMN SING SUNDAY Join us on Sunday, September 6th as we worship God through an Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing. Our service will consist of singing, reading scripture and learning the history behind some of our favorite hymns. Reach out to Justin (jzepp@lppcmin.org) to request a specific hymn, share a hymn history or even a personal story of how a certain hymn has impacted your life. We will also open up the floor for people to make requests that Sunday morning. We’re going to do one verse of every hymn so we can sing as many of our favorites as possible. And don’t worry, if we don’t get to your request, we’ll add it to the list of songs that we’ll sing in an upcoming worship service. We look forward to seeing you on September 6th and hope you come ready to “Make a Joyful Noise!”
We are an intergenerational church seeking Jesus together and shining His light from this hill. We aspire to be welcoming, growing and serving.
