TEACHER SPOTLIGHT BONNIE TAMASITIS, 2ND GRADE TEACHER We are delighted to shine a spotlight on Bonnie Tamasitis, a dedicated and certified Elementary School Teacher with an impressive 32-year tenure. Bonnie's wealth of experience is marked by her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for all her students.

Professional Background: Bonnie holds a Master's degree in Teaching and a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated her effectiveness as a communicator, creating and delivering lesson plans with outstanding results. Her proficiency in utilizing differentiated curriculum strategies has allowed her to address the learning styles and needs of her students.

Classroom Management Expertise: Recognized for her adept classroom management techniques, Bonnie creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and growth. Her success in this area reflects her dedication to providing students with an environment that is not only educational but also supportive of their overall development.

Collaborative Spirit: As a cooperative faculty member, Bonnie actively collaborates with all levels of school staff, fostering a sense of teamwork and unity. Her teaching doesn’t stop with her students, she also serves as a mentor to other teachers, helping them grow and learn.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT LESLIE MCCANTS, 5TH GRADE TEACHER We are thrilled to feature Leslie McCants, an exceptional educator and our dedicated 5th grade teacher for the past two years. With a remarkable career spanning over almost three decades, Leslie brings a wealth of experience and passion to the classroom.

Professional Background: Leslie holds a Master's degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, both earned with honors from Coastal Carolina University.

Educator since 1995

Professional Journey: Leslie's teaching journey began as a teacher, where she dedicated an impressive 23 years to shaping young minds at Andrews Elementary School in Georgetown Country School District. She served as a 3rd grade teacher for 20 years and a 2nd grade teacher for three years. Leslie also contributed significantly to the educational landscape at Maryville Elementary for four years prior to joining LPS. Versatility and Leadership: Beyond her role as a classroom teacher, Leslie has demonstrated her leadership skills during her tenure with GCSD by serving as a grade level chairperson, chairperson for the school safety committee, and active participation in the school improvement council. Her commitment to creating a safe and nurturing learning environment extends beyond the classroom walls.

for my students “Washington, D.C. to see the symbols of our nation. I was able to take a field trip with my son’s class to D.C., and we were fortunate to be able to enter the White House and take a tour.

Thinking of all the history there, I was overwhelmed and amazed. We walked the mall and saw the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. In addition, we spent a day exploring the Smithsonian. I would love to be able to share that experience with all of my students.”

A funny classroom moment

“At the beginning of a year when I taught second grade, a student asked me what my last name was. I told him that it was McCants. After staring at each other, puzzled, he said, “So your name is McCants McCants?” I knew right away that I had my work cut out for me that year!”

NEW FACULTY KEITH WEST, 4TH GRADE New 4th Grade Teacher Mr. Keith West has accepted our offer to be the new fourth grade teacher. Mr. West is an experienced educator who spent twelve years teaching fourth grade at Cannon School in Concord, NC. He also has a close familiarity with Lowcountry Prep as Mr. West was the long-term sub for fourth grade last year when Mrs. Grah was out on maternity leave. We are blessed to have such a talented and caring educator who knows our community back on our teaching staff.

Mr. West will be on campus and in the fourth-grade classroom beginning November 27th. He and Mrs. Grah will co-teach for the that week and travel together, with the class, on the fourth-grade field trip on December 4th.

Effective Tuesday, December 5th, Mr. West will take on primary teaching responsibilities and will officially take over for Mrs. Grah for the remainder of this school year.

ASHLEY PALMER, 3RD GRADE New 3rd Grade Teacher We are excited to share that Ms. Ashley Palmer has agreed to be our next third grade teacher at Lowcountry Preparatory School. Ms. Palmer is a local educator who, throughout her twelve years of experience, has taught second grade, fourth grade and fifth grade. She has a passion for teaching reading and writing and has also worked as a Reading Interventionist. In the classroom, Ms. Palmer prioritizes both connection and content and has a nurturing approach towards instruction. She is both grateful and thrilled with the opportunity to join the faculty at Lowcountry Prep and work with your child.

The timing of Ms. Palmer's transition to our thirdgrade classroom will coincide with the start of the second semester. To help with the transition, she will spend 12/7 and 12/8 on campus to become familiar with the school, co-workers, and mostly the students.

She will host a “Meet the Teacher” on 12/7 from 34:00pm in the 3rd grade classroom.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS ISABELLA GARCIA A Beacon of Kindness We are shining a light on Isabella Garcia, a remarkable fourth-grader whose positive energy radiates each day!

Isabella's delightful demeanor is particularly evident in the morning, where her early arrival sets the tone for the day.

Isabella goes above and beyond, actively contributing to the school's learning environment. She helps out in the library, organizing and shelving books with enthusiasm.

Additionally, her kindness extends to helping a kindergartener with reading, embodying the spirit of mentorship and support.

Her warm and welcoming nature is felt by all as she interacts with her peers, creating a friendly atmosphere for everyone waiting to head to their classes.

Join us in applauding Isabella Garcia for her outstanding contributions and being a beacon of kindness within our school!

JOHNATHON LURSEN Honoring Our Heroes We're proud to feature Johnathon Lursen, a compassionate and thoughtful second grader who recently caught our attention with a heartfelt gesture on Veterans Day. Jonathon took the time to write a letter to Major Fred, expressing deep appreciation for his dedicated service in the Marine Corps.

This act of gratitude reflects Johnathon's commendable character and respect for those who have served our country. It's heartening to see students like Jonathon embodying values of kindness and acknowledgment, making a positive impact not only within our school community but also extending their gratitude to the broader community.

FIELD TRIPS 4TH GRADE HEADS TO HOBCOW BARONY Adventure at Hobcaw Barony's Wood Magic Forest Fair The fourth-grade field trip to the Wood Magic Forest Fair at Hobcaw Barony on Thursday, November 16, was an engaging and educational experience. The program, designed for fourth graders, is aligned with state curriculum standards in science, math, and language arts.

With over 40,000 students participating since its inception in 1999, the fair combines hands-on activities and visually engaging presentations to teach the importance of forest lands to wildlife, the economy, and daily quality of life.

Before the fair, students took a pre-test to assess their knowledge about sustainable forestry, ecology, and conservation. They also watched forest-related videos and participated in classroom discussions to prepare for the day.

The day started in the education center's conference room, where students learned about the everyday use of forest products. They observed the process of making lumber with a sawmill, discussing by-products like bark and sawdust, as well as other products such as plywood and orient strand board. The instructor led a discussion on the various benefits of forests, including wildlife habitats, soil and water protection, air and noise filtering, recreation, social benefits, and economic advantages like job creation.

The students also engaged in a game to understand the interrelationships between forest plants, animals, and humans. The day continued with lessons on wildfire and foresters' use of prescribed fire. Students even had the opportunity to dress up in firefighting clothes and identify examples of good and bad fires through images. After lunch, the focus shifted to landfill problems and the importance of recycling paper. Students actively participated by recycling toilet tissue, breaking it up in water, screening it, and drying it.

The day concluded with a magical show, leaving students with the message that not everything seen or heard can be believed. Each student received a gift bag containing items like an activity book, pencils, a piece of cedar, a piece of red oak wood, and a special wooden yo-yo. Overall, it was a fun and enriching experience for all fourth graders involved.

FIELD TRIPS A MORNING OF METEOROLOGICAL MARVELS Kindergarten & First Grade On Wednesday, December 8, the kindergarten and first grade students, along with enthusiastic parents, embarked on a captivating adventure to the WPDE weather station. The renowned meteorologist, Ed Piotrowski, graciously guided us through the inner workings of the station, unraveling the secrets behind weather forecasting.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for both students and parents to step in front of the green screen.

As they left the WPDE weather station, the students carried with them not just memories of a fun-filled morning but a deeper appreciation for the science that helps us understand and anticipate the everchanging elements that shape our world.

They appeared on ABC News at 5 on November 8, 2023!

DID YOU KNOW....Jupiter’s everlasting hurricane is larger than Earth Jupiter spins at an incredible pace. If you stood at the equator on Jupiter, the velocity would be about 28,000 miles per hour. This is about 28 times faster than Earth’s rotation.

Because of its quick rotation and heaping size, it amplifies the Coriolis effect and weather patterns. Jupiter’s weather is so extreme that we can see it from space.

For example, astronomers have observed an everlasting hurricane for 340+ years (ever since the invention of the telescope). We see this cyclone as an enormous red spot on Jupiter because of the Coriolis effect.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS LOWER SCHOOL BOOK FAIR Exciting News! Book Fair Coming Soon!

We are thrilled to announce that our much-anticipated annual Book Fair is just around the corner, starting on Friday morning, December 1st! This year, Literati will be our fantastic host, providing a diverse selection of books that cater to various interests and reading levels.

Shopping Details Children can begin their book shopping on the morning of December 1st.

Book purchases will be available every morning from December 4th to December 8th, between 7:30 and 8:00.

Classes will get to visit on Monday, 12/4, with their class, to create their Wish List!

Classes will also have the opportunity to visit the fair during their regular library time.

Shopping Opportunities for Parents Parents are welcome to shop during regular school hours, but we kindly request that your child not be taken out of class for this purpose. Registers open at 7:30am each morning, so come in before school starts and find some gems for Christmas!

The registers will close each day at 2:30, but for those interested, shopping by appointment will be available starting at 2:45. Please reach out to Susan Parsons in advance to schedule (sparsons@lowcountryprep.org) Special Event Mark your calendars! On December 7th, from 8:30-9:15am, we will be hosting a Holiday Sing-ALong. Following the program, all parents are invited to visit the Book Fair. There will be two registers available for your convenience, one in the library and one in the hall.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS SPOOKTACULAR HIGHLIGHTS Halloween Parade was a Hit!

🎃 The halls of LPS echoed with laughter and

excitement on October 31st as our students showcased their creativity in the annual Halloween Parade. Dressed to impress, they paraded around the center circle, spreading a wave of festive joy.

👻 The Middle and Upper School students, in the

true spirit of community, generously shared treats, making the day even sweeter for our younger participants. The exchange of smiles and goodies created a memorable atmosphere of camaraderie. The LS students Halloween bags were overflowing!

🍭 A big thank you to everyone who contributed

to the success of this event, from the spirited participants to the generous treat-givers. It was a Halloween to remember at LPS, filled with costumes, candy, and community spirit!

PROGRAMS & EVENTS VETERANS DAY & GRANDPARENTS DAY PROGRAM Harmony of Heroes: A Musical Tribute to Veterans and Grandparents On Friday, November 10th, at 8:30 am, we held a heartwarming celebration of our nation's heroes and the cherished bond between generations. Students from grades K-6 came together to sing and play music, creating a touching tribute to honor both veterans and grandparents.

This special event is more than just a musical performance; it's a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave veterans and to express gratitude for the wisdom and love shared by grandparents. The program was led by the talented Tony Starlight, ensuring a captivating and emotionally resonant experience.

We experienced an atmosphere filled with patriotism, nostalgia, and the joy of family connections. It was a moving experience that brought a tear to many eyes.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS KINDNESS CHIPS: FOSTERING A CULTURE OF CARING Our students have been earning "Kindness Chips" for their remarkable acts of kindness towards each other in the classroom. From helping a classmate with a challenging assignment to sharing a friendly smile, these acts have not only made our classrooms more harmonious but have also created a positive atmosphere throughout the school.

Reeves cashed in his chips for a classroom reward, and the result was spectacular Class Camo Day!

A 3RD GRADE READERS THEATER On Monday, November 13, students in third-grade excitedly presented several lively Reader's theater scripts for classroom parents and LPS second graders.

LPS third-graders worked diligently for days on beautiful scenery, creative puppets, and appealing costumes prior to the performance. The presentation topics were related to recent learning on America's first people; the indigenous people of the lowcountry area and their way of life, a historical poem that retold the story of America's first Pilgrims voyaging to the New World, and a seasonal poem warning the geese of the coming winter months.

Reader's theatre is a great approach for encouraging reading fluency. Students read aloud selected parts within a script.

Students do not commit the script to memory. They only need to practice the script several times to develop their fluency skills.

LS/MS CHESS TOURNAMENT Checkmate Champions: Lower School Chess Team Takes 1st at SCISA State Tournament!

Our Lower School Chess Team clinched 1st place at the SCISA State Chess Tournament on Tuesday, November 14! Toby Hayes dominated, securing 1st overall, and Kyle Chow grabbed an impressive 2nd out of 140 participants.

Congratulations to our entire Lower School Chess Team, which included: 5th graders: Toby Hayes, Kyle Chow, Grace Costaldo, Matthew Joseph, Robert Marona, Paul Terenzi, and Kate Zechmann 4th graders: Grady Short and Hollis Swanson 3rd graders: Zach Ard, James Costaldo, and Julienne Terenzi 2nd grader: Reina Marona (filled in last minute for an absent student).

We are also proud of our Middle School Chess Team, which included 8th graders Reece Bayernic and Grant Putman.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS RAISE CRAZE - A SUCCESSFUL & FUN CAMPAIGN Celebrating Our Super Powers On Thursday, November 9th, at 1:30 pm, the Lower School was buzzing with excitement as every classroom achieved a special Raise Craze celebration a Super Power and Movie Time! To unlock this fun and rewarding experience, each classroom had to meet the requirements of earning 30 Acts of Kindness (AOK) and/or raising a total of $1000.00.

A big congratulations is in order for all the lower school classrooms that surpassed these goals! The collective effort and positive actions of the students not only made the Raise Craze celebration possible but also showcased the Lower School's commitment to kindness and community support.

This celebration not only recognizes the accomplishments of each classroom but also highlights the power of kindness and teamwork within our Lower School community.

Well done to all the students and teachers for their hard work and generosity in making this special event a reality!

Principal for the Day - Ollie Young and Porter Brooks!!!

Ollie Young, a 3rd grader, earned the title “Principal for the Day” for earning the most number of Acts of Kindness performed during our Raise Craze fundraiser!!! Congratulations Ollie!!! She worked alongside Mr. Wehunt on Tuesday, 11/28.

Little Hearts, Big Impact

Gab News and Coast Observer did a story on three of our kindergarten students, Burkley Ford, Wren Lumpkin, and Bees Postal, who made a big sacrifice as part of the the Raise Craze fundraiser - showing great ‘Acts of Kindness’.

Mrs. Rogers, their teacher, said all three students had birthdays in October and all three decided to collect art supplies for the Children's Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina instead of receiving birthday gifts. Click HERE to read the article.

Kindergarten Celebrates Success As a part of the Raise Craze initiative, classes were challenged to achieve 100% registration, and the kindergarten class met this goal. The air was filled with joy and laughter as the students, teachers, and volunteers came together to mark this significant achievement. Congratulations to the kindergarten class on their 100% registration success – a truly commendable achievement that deserves to be celebrated in style!

PROGRAMS & EVENTS CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING Kindergarten & 1st Grade Kindergarten and First Grade commemorated Thanksgiving by reenacting The First Thanksgiving feast shared between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. The First Graders adorned themselves as Pilgrims, while the Kindergarteners dressed as Native Americans. As we came together for a delightful meal, we reflected on our gratitude, cherishing the spirit of thankfulness.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS OTHER HAPPENINGS R.E.A.D. Program - Cooper’s Surgery We want to share some news about Cooper, one of our beloved R.E.A.D. dog. On November 30th, Cooper underwent surgery for the removal of one of his legs. Despite facing this challenge, we are confident that Cooper will be a trooper throughout his recovery.

Please join us in sending heartfelt prayers for a speedy recovery, and we eagerly look forward to welcoming Cooper back among us soon.

Spreading Kindness to Our Local Heroes

🌟 On November 17th, our Fin Friends came together to spread gratitude and kindness! They spent the day crafting heartfelt letters of thanks for our local firefighters and police officers. 🚒👮‍♂️ This meaningful initiative is part of our Raise Craze fundraisers, where we're not only raising funds but also spreading joy through Acts of Kindness. Way to go, Marlins! Your efforts make a positive impact in our community!

Practice Lock Down Drill On Thursday, November 30, we conducted a practice Lock Down drill, a crucial exercise aimed at ensuring the safety and preparedness of both students and faculty/staff in the event of an emergency. This guided drill provided essential verbal guidance throughout the entire process, fostering a sense of security and understanding among participants. Recognizing the diverse age groups within our student body, we prioritized the comfort and comprehension of our youngest learners. By employing a guided approach, we aimed to alleviate any potential fear, allowing them to focus more on the drill procedures.

Our overarching goal is to cultivate automatic responses among all participants, ensuring that in the event of a real emergency requiring a lockdown, everyone is well-versed and capable of executing the necessary measures swiftly and efficiently. Through consistent practice and a commitment to safety protocols, we strive to fortify our collective preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise. We would like to thank Porter Brooks, our Principal for the Day, for his help during the drill!

PROGRAMS & EVENTS Pawleys Island Tree Lighting Event We're excited to share the joyous moments from the recent Pawleys Island Tree Lighting event held on 11/24/23. The evening was filled with festive spirit, illuminated by the talents of Tony Starlight, our school's music teacher, and a group of incredibly young students.

Featured Student Performers: Stella and Josie Short Avery and Salem Sinclair Robert Kunes These young stars joined Tony Starlight on stage and captured the hearts of the audience with their delightful performances. The repertoire included classic holiday tunes that had everyone singing along: 1. Jingle Bell Rock 2. Rocking around the Christmas Tree 3. Mele Kalikimaka 4. Away In a Manger A special thank you to Tony Starlight and the participating students for making this event memorable. We look forward to more opportunities to share the talents of our school community in the future!
