A home with history Tucked back off the cobbles of the ancient market town of Richmond, only 200 metres from the idyllic picnic-spot shores of the River Swale, discover the Ballroom. Attached to Swale House, a grand Georgian home built in the 18th century, Swale House was inhabited by various well-known and wellconnected patrons, including the famous headmaster of the local Richmond School, James Tate. A boarding school at the time, children would stay at Swale House, including Charles Dodgson, better known by his authorial name of Lewis Carroll.

Passed through various hands, the home came into the custodianship of Owen Pease, one of the Pease of Darlington, Quakers whose forebear included Joseph Pease, founder of the first ever passenger railway. In 1908, Pease built a ballroom on to the back of Swale House, throwing lavish balls throughout the 1920s and 30s. In the 1950s the Ballroom passed into the ownership of the district council, serving as the meeting chamber for several years. For a time, the Ballroom fell out of use, prior to being purchased by its current owners and converted to residential use six years ago.
