Drakenstein living up to its standing as sports tourism mecca of the Cape Winelands
24 April 2023
Drakenstein Municipality’s tourism sector is enjoying a healthy influx of local and international travellers visiting our destination – mostly thanks to an enviable list of prestigious sporting events taking place on home soil.

Since December last year, Paarl-Wellington has been playing host to a range of world-class sporting events, with cycling taking the lead in attracting visitors from around the world. Local and international sports enthusiasts have revelled in events such as the inaugural Paarl Bike Festival, the Tour du Cap and the Absa Cape Epic.
Drakenstein was also thrilled to be one of three host destinations in South Africa for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup in February; we are looking forward to welcoming the Netball World Cup 2023 to our shores later this year, the Safari Half Marathon as well as the 62nd edition of the iconic Berg River Canoe Marathon.
Our destination is clearly living up to its standing as the sports tourism mecca of the Cape Winelands.
Those who prefer non-sporting events don’t have to feel left out, as they can explore the numerous hidden gems of Paarl-Wellington and soak up our true and warm Winelands’ hospitality.
Located less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, PaarlWellington and surrounds are ideal destinations to escape the busyness of city life.
