It’s time to PRUNE, PLANT and TRANSPLANT!
In most regions of South Africa July is traditionally known as the month when we prune, plant or transplant deciduous fruit trees, grape vines, roses and other deciduous plants. Many evergreens can also be moved at this time. Because the flow of plant sap is low in winter, pruning and transplanting at this time reduces the risk of infection, and the shock of transplanting.
In June and July garden centres around South Africa sell deciduous fruit trees and roses, either bare rooted or planted in nursery bags. Planting in winter when the plants are dormant gives them a chance to settle in and to start developing roots before they put their energy into spring growth.
So what are deciduous fruit trees?
The word deciduous means “to fall off” and refers to how a plant or tree’s leaves fall off in the autumn.
Trees use leaves to collect sunlight and turn it into energy (food) through the process of photosynthesis. In autumn deciduous trees shed their leaves as they are no longer needed and the amount of sunlight has reduced.
Examples of deciduous trees are:
• Japanese Maple
• Silver Birch
• Sycamore Tree
• Liquidambar Tree
• Dogwood Tree
How to prune your deciduous fruit trees?
The two basic types of pruning cuts are heading and thinning. Thinning cuts are the least invigorating type of cut and are the most effective pruning cut for maintaining woody plants in their natural form.
Pruning, particularly heading cuts, stimulates regrowth very close to the pruning cut. Heading cuts, such as topping, dehorning and hedging, often are misused and destroy the natural shape of plants because they stimulate regrowth near pruning cuts.

Why do women outlive men?
South African women are outliving men by as much as seven years. Why is this and what can men do to ensure they stay healthy?
“According to Statistics SA, life expectancy at birth for 2014 was estimated at 59,1 years for males and 63,1 years for females. This is borne out by statistics which suggest that women in this country are outliving men by a substantial margin,” says Professor Jacques Snyman, a Clinical Expert. “There are a number of reasons for this including the fact that men tend to engage in more reckless behaviour, consume more alcohol, drive at higher speeds and are less inclined to take care of their health than women.”
“In addition, women may be said to in some ways be naturally ‘hardwired’ to live longer than men,” he adds. “For instance, women have, at least until after menopause, considerably less of a risk of suffering from heart disease, a major killer in South Africa. This is because they are protected by the hormone oestrogen, which keeps their arteries stronger and more flexible.”
According to Snyman, another important reason why men tend die younger than women is that males tend to pay less attention to their health. Men are generally less inclined to have medical scheme cover and to visit the doctor when they have health concerns. Indeed, he says female members of Resolution Health are much more likely to make use of their scheme benefits than men.
Just what are the health issues that men should consider and how may they be best addressed? Snyman says prostate cancer is one of the better known male health issues but points out that there are also a host of others. They include conditions such as lung, colorectal, testicular and skin cancers; type 2 diabetes; heart disease; stroke; emphysema; and mental health problems, to name just a few.
“Some of these diseases can be avoided altogether through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. In the overwhelming majority of cases these medical conditions can also be successfully managed if they are detected early,” adds Snyman.
“Consider the cases of prostate and testicular cancers. The treatment of these diseases has advanced at a rapid rate in recent years to the extent that they can usually be cured when they are detected early. Indeed, 80% of prostate cancer and 95% of testicular cancer cases can be cured with timeous and appropriate treatment.”
Snyman warns that it is not just older men who are at risk. Testicular cancer, by way of example, most commonly occurs in men between the ages of 17 and 35. “Males of all ages face risks and should take the necessary steps to protect their health,” he argues. “Men can address health or potential health problems if they pay closer attention to their wellbeing and follow a life enhancing lifestyle from an early age.” He suggests that men can take better care of their health in a number of ways. We can, for instance, learn to check our own blood pressure to ensure that this is within healthy levels.
Prof Snyman makes the following additional health recommendations to South African men:
• Improve your lifestyle. Eating healthily and exercising regularly have numerous benefits and assist to keep the body strong. Regular exercise is good for the heart and helps reduce high cholesterol levels and has even been shown to improve moods.
• Lose weight. There are a number of health risks associated with being obese and living a sedentary lifestyle. These include a higher risk of developing type II diabetes and high blood pressure.
• Give up smoking. Smoking can cause a range of cancers, lung diseases as well as heart disease. Quitting smoking has a number health benefits.
• Reduce alcohol intake. Excessive, regular drinking can increase blood pressure and even damage organs such as the liver.
• Manage your stress levels. Stress over the long-term can cause wear and tear to the body’s systems and negatively impact one’s sense of well-being. Men should find ways to manage stress better. Exercise and talk therapy are just two activities men can undertake to reduce stress levels.
Taking a few basic precautions can go a long way towards protecting our health. No one wants to become ill and we as South African men should be doing more to make sure that we stay strong for the sake of our families and ourselves.
Let us all take responsibility for taking care of our health, wellbeing and happiness. No one else is going to do this for us.

GEVAAR
