WHAT’S THE QR FOR?

Simply open your camera app, point it at the QR code like you’re going to take a close pic of it (but don’t) and wait for a message to pop up. Then click it.

Melkkos

INGREDIENTS

• 100 g sugar

• 1 1/2 t ground cinnamon

• 90 g cake flour

• Salt, a pinch

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

Mix the sugar and ground cinnamon.

Melkkos is a traditional South African dish made from sugar, flour, butter and milk, flavoured with cinnamon. This is a basic, smooth version made with a whisk, but you can also mix with a wooden spoon if you prefer lumps. Some recipes even add pasta or sago, while others call for Maizena or condensed milk.

• 3 T butter

• 1 1/2 litres milk

• 1 cinnamon stick

Rub together the flour, salt and butter with your fingers until it is nice and crumbly – the Afrikaans word for this is frummel (verb) or frummels (noun).

Add 3 T cinnamon sugar and continue mixing with your fingers. Pour the milk into a large saucepan and add the cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil. Once the milk is boiling and frothy, reduce the heat and allow to simmer while slowly sprinkling the frummels into the milk, whisking.

Reduce the heat and simmer gently, while whisking continually, for about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving with a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar.

COOK TIPS: Do not skimp on the cinnamon sugar – if you are cautious with it, you have no business making and serving melkkos. If you like your melkkos more milky, simply use more milk and less flour.

Alternatively, if you want to have small lumps of cinnamon dough drifting like tiny islands in a bowl of milk, gently stir with a wooden spoon instead of whisking. Just do what feels right. Melkkos is not a science, it’s an emotion.

Rémi Lübbe (Grade 100 took part in the Summer Action netball league at the Brackenfell Arena where their team each received a Gold medal before they competed in the Junior League Inter Provincial Tournament on 3 – 8 April 2023 at the Edenvale Actions Sports Arena. Rémi and her team received their medals for participating in the Interprovincial tournament for Western Province action netball in 2023 in the U17B team.

Get all the photo’s Lisa Poolman (Grade 12) took part in an Archery Competition at Eben Donges High School. She shot her personal best with a score of 282 and received a bronze medal in the Rising Stars Category for this score. Lisa was also 2nd in the High School Girls category and received a silver medal.

Julia Dreyer (Grade 11) has represented Curro Durbanville as the goalkeeper for the U19A team since 2022. Julia is also part of the Curro Durbanville 2nd Tennis team, and they recently won a silver medal at the Tjaart Vorster Tournament in Craddock. It was a phenomenal day of hockey when Curro hockeyDurbanville participatedteamsin the Somerset West Primary School Hockey Festival. Curro learnerUitzicht Riley Loynes (Grade 5) u/11 scoredconfidently goals in all 5 games, helping her team to grab the gold!

Dit hoor jy nie aldag nie! Maar dit is presies wat Frans en Ronel van Wyk, eienaars van die Franseman regkry, `n kos en koop-ervaring wat jy nie aldag in die Paarl kry nie.

Die kreatiewe ontwerpe teen die Franseman se venters, wat aanpas by seisoenale- en sosiale temas van die Boland, het jou oog seker al gevang terwyl jy by die robot in die hoofstraat wag. Dié Namibiërs het die resep reg - `n bietjie “Franse” flair gekombineerd met `n wêreldse koservaring, van tradisionele Duits-Suidwes disse soos onder andere brötchens en Florentines, tot Meksikaanse quesadillas.

Vir dié met `n soettand bied hulle koektafel iets vir elkeen, varsgebakte koeke geïnspireer deur Frans en Ronel se herkoms en toer om die wêreld, wat hulle die smake met hulle kliënte graag deel.
