BRITISH & IRISH LIONS

Since 1888

The Lions epitomise everything that is great about rugby. Four countries side-by-side up against the Southern Hemisphere’s finest players, showing levels of skill, commitment and power that are rarely seen on the field.

The team first toured back in 1888, when a 21-man squad of English, Scottish and Welsh players visited Australia and New Zealand. Significantly longer than the tours are now, their 35-match schedule did not include any Test matches with the team running out against provincial, city and academic sides, winning 27 matches. They also played 19 games of Australian Rules Football.

The team return to New Zealand in the summer of 2017 to take on the reigning World Champions in a 3-Test series, with Canterbury kitting out the players for this historical event.
