OUR MISSION

We are so excited to bring you Love Live Local’s 7th annual Love Local Field Guide! To fulfill our nonprofit mission of communicating the importance of shopping local we focus a lot of our energy not only on sharing why it is important to support the Cape’s locally made, grown and owned but also show people how to do it. This publication is one of the ways we do that. In these pages you will not only find the stories of the businesses, products and brands that make Cape Cod unique, but locals, second homeowners and visitors alike will also find ideas for day trips, insider tips and recommendations for must-see spots. We also fill you in on all the other work we do to meet our goal of fostering an economically sustainable, creative and exciting future for the Cape. No one knew that the beginning of a new decade would bring us one of the most challenging times in our collective history. But it came as no surprise that Cape Codders and Cape Cod lovers would support each other through it all - and we would show up for local businesses in a meaningful way. On our Main Streets, in our downtowns and down our side roads, your support has kept them going in more ways than one. For their part, the local businesses have also met this moment with creativity, grit and determination, because they too wanted to show up for their community by being open, providing sustenance, keeping people employed and the local economy afloat. We present this to you as a guide to immersing yourself in this community and to experiencing and appreciating all it has to offer, from the breathtaking natural wonders to outdoor activities and cultural experiences, but also - and maybe most of all - to introducing you to our irreplaceable and deeply committed local businesses. Locally yours,

Amanda Converse, CEO

LOCAL MATTERS DEFINING The concept of shopping local is seemingly pretty simple: when you want or need a product you patronize a business owned by people who are a part of the community in which you live. You buy a new shirt at a Main Street boutique; you find the latest bestselling novel at an independent bookstore; you complete your latest home improvement project with supplies from a local hardware store; you have date night at a locally owned restaurant. However, to us shopping local is a little more layered than where you buy things you want and need or where you eat out. First, consuming goes beyond just consuming physical items; shopping local also includes using local services.

What’s more, macro economic circumstances, corporate consolidation and cultural trends don’t just impact retail, restaurants and some service based businesses. They can have a negative impact on many other parts of a local community from media to the arts. So, where you spend your money matters, yes, but there are other forms of currency that are important as well: time, attention, and intention. To shop local also means to be much more thoughtful with where and how you spend all of your valuable resources as they all have an immense impact on the Cape Cod community.

INVEST YOUR MONEY IN CAPE COD BY: SHOPPING AND EATING AT LOCALLY OWNED STORES AND RESTAURANTS Before you click on the buy button or pull into the chain restaurant parking lot, consider that locally owned shops and eateries reinvest 2-4 times more money into the Cape Cod economy than their corporate competitors; and virtually no money spent with online behemoths like Amazon is reinvested into the local community. USING LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS Instead of turning to YouTube, Vistaprint, Skillshare, Framebridge, LegalZoom or Geico remind yourself there are plenty of locally owned personal and business service providers like gyms and fitness studios, print shops, music schools, frame centers, law firms, insurance agencies that are a part of the fabric of Cape Cod and are owned and staffed by people who are much more invested in our community than an online service based who-knows-where ever could be.

DONATING TO CAPE COD NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS There are many worthy causes to donate to all over the world, but it is important to keep in mind that not only do nonprofits located on Cape Cod directly serve and support our friends and neighbors, but they also contribute to the economic well-being of our region, employing local residents, renting commercial spaces in our towns and villages and buying supplies from local companies. BANKING LOCAL When considering where to make your deposits or get your mortgage, remember that local banks provide both economic or social value for the Cape Cod community. Money deposited in local banks is more likely to be loaned to a local business, as well as used to sponsor local cultural events and support local organizations.

INVEST YOUR TIME IN CAPE COD BY: VOLUNTEERING WITH A LOCAL GROUP OR ORGANIZATION Volunteering for local causes whether they are focused on human needs, animal welfare, the arts or the environment not only helps you meet new people, expand your network, and help you develop you new skills but it provides much-needed help to valuable organizations, gives you a deeper connection to the Cape Cod community and helps to make it a better place.

10

SERVING ON A TOWN BOARD OR COMMITTEE You don’t have to run for office to participate in governing your village or town (although if that interests you, go for it!). Town boards and committees do important work, providing an opportunity for members of the public to become involved in local government in a meaningful way and enabling them to play a role in shaping community character and culture. More citizen engagement results in a stronger and more responsive local government, which has a great impact on our daily lives.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2021

SHOPPING LOCAL ATTENDING COMMUNITY EVENTS Cultural organizations, community groups and businesses bring us opportunities to gather by putting on events - in-person and virtual - all year round. These events are so important for both community and individual well-being, giving us all a chance to be social and feel a part of something larger than ourselves.

SHARING YOUR EXPERTISE Consider becoming a mentor for a small business, a local student or someone who is going through a life transition. Mentoring others is an empowering and fulfilling opportunity where you help those you advise navigate new situations, broaden their skill sets, and succeed through challenges, which in turn leads to a much stronger and more resilient community overall.

INVEST YOUR ATTENTION IN CAPE COD BY: LISTENING TO LOCAL MUSICIANS Cape Cod is full of musicians who are talented and creative. They provide the atmosphere and the entertainment for countless nights out, community festivals and local fundraisers. Even if you can’t get out to see a show in person you can oftentimes find their tunes playing on the local radio dial and many of them have their albums and songs available on digital streaming services. By supporting them you are also supporting the local economy.

READING LOCAL NEWS SOURCES Rather than only consuming national news or watching cable stations, consider making local news part of your daily media diet. Not only do local news outlets reflect and connect the Cape Cod community but robust local news is an essential part of our democracy. Engaging in reading, watching and listening to local media is not only important for you to personally stay informed but it is also necessary to keep any community healthy and vibrant.

WATCHING LOCAL PERFORMANCES Your attention is one of your most valuable resources, and as tempting as it is to simply spend your weekend nights binge watching the latest hit t.v. series, local cultural organizations work hard to put on fun and unique productions and shows for the benefit of the community. So, next time you have the opportunity to attend a local play or art opening, consider how enriching it is not just for the individuals involved but for all of Cape Cod.

BOOSTING LOCAL BUSINESSES ONLINE It is really hard for small businesses and organizations to cut through the noise and get noticed online. So, instead of liking or commenting on a big box store’s post or sharing the political meme of the day, consider using your valuable time online to show your local mom and pop shops some love on social media, subscribe to and read their emails, and spread the word about their offerings.

INVEST YOUR INTENTION IN CAPE COD BY: BUYING DIRECTLY FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES Third party delivery apps and ecommerce platforms often charge small businesses a lot of money and are predatory in nature. Buy directly from the local business through their own website whenever you can, so they can keep as much of their hard earned money in their cash registers instead of sending it over the bridge. NOT ASKING FOR DISCOUNTS Everyone loves a deal, but most small businesses operate on pretty thin margins and might be struggling to get by, so if you can, pay full price. Keep in mind, Cape Cod local businesses care about this community, reinvest much of their dollars earned into it, and will give their loyal customers a bargain when they can!

EXPLORING ALL IT HAS TO OFFER Whether it’s visiting the Cape’s Main Streets and downtowns, taking a hike along the beach or around the kettle ponds, or checking out notable historical sites, there is always something new to experience, facts to learn and people to meet. Exploring Cape Cod will enhance your own well being, strengthen your ties to the community, and probably make you fall in love with this incredible place all over again! BEING KIND We’re “all in this together” whether “this” means a global pandemic or just another Tuesday. Setting an intention to be respectful, supportive and kind to others you encounter whether it’s at work or play goes a long way in fostering the community connection we all need to thrive.

CAPE COD IS RESILIENT When it became clear the COVID-19 public health crisis was going to have a severe negative impact on small businesses across the country and in our region, we quickly established the CAPE COD RESILIENCE FUND. Our goal was simple: provide some financial relief - and a bit of a morale boost - our local businesses would need to face the economic slowdown head on, and give the Cape Cod community an opportunity to support the small businesses that are the heart and soul of our local economy. Through grassroots fundraising and with the help of over 575 individual donors, the fundraising efforts of close to 50 local businesses and organizations, one grant from the Town of Barnstable and one from the Cape & Islands License plate fund, to date we have been able to raise over $116,000 and given 113 grants in the amount of $500-$2000 to 34 retailers, 21 restaurants, 17 personal service providers, 8 recreation businesses, 7 hotels and bed & breakfasts, 7 health and fitness businesses, 6 farms, 4 business service providers,

3 childcare providers, 2 newspapers and 2 local artists. The grantees were longtime family businesses as well as newer entrepreneurial ventures. Some used the funds to make loan payments, others to cover payroll. Some invested in more inventory, and some paid electric bills. But one thing they all have in common is that they are dedicated to keeping their business alive and passionate about their community. It has been over a year since the start of the economic shut down and subsequent slowdown, and though recovery is on the horizon, many of the struggles for our local businesses remain. While the biggest businesses in the United States like Amazon recorded insane amounts of profits in 2020, small businesses on Cape Cod continue to struggle to make up for the huge losses they incurred during the same time period. Retail stores across the region noted a decrease in sales anywhere from 20%-70%, one locally owned Bed and Breakfast noted their business was down 35%, a bike rental business operated at 45% of their

usual revenue, and one restaurant noted their sales were down $1 million from the previous year. Most funding for small businesses from both the state and the federal governments was difficult to access, failed to address the long-term nature of the pandemic, and by many accounts “a drop in the bucket” that barely begins to cover their lost revenue as a result of the public health crisis. A business impact survey conducted by the Cape Cod Commission in late 2020 found that businesses on Cape Cod don't have enough in reserves to last longer than 3-6 more months. This means the financial needs of our small businesses continue to be pressing. Small businesses are the cornerstone, the backbone, the heartbeat of any vibrant community and Cape Cod is no exception - the long-term economic sustainability of our region is tied to their fate, which is why our efforts to raise money for small business grants for those we have not yet been able to reach through the Cape Cod Resilience Fund will continue for as long as necessary.

E X P LO R FALMOUTH, the Cape’s second

largest town has much to discover from natural wonders to tried-and-true local businesses that offer unforgettable experiences.

BOURNE, considered the gateway to Cape Cod, straddles the Cape Cod Canal and has much to offer on both sides of the bridges.

Main Street Buzzards Bay is a must-stop before (or after) crossing over the Bourne Bridge. Get a smoothie at the BLENDED BERRY or a cold-pressed juice at VELA JUICE BAR. Satiate your hunger at MEZZA LUNA, KRUA THAI, or MAHONEY’S ON MAIN and quench your thirst at BUZZARDS BAY BREWING COMPANY. Head to RED TOP SPORTING GOODS or BUZZARDS BAY BIKES to gear up for a day of biking or fishing on the canal, or spend some time checking out the Railroad Bridge at Buzzards Bay Park. Once you are off the main land, make your way to Pocasset and down Shore Road, stop at GRAY GABLES MARKET for provisions for a hike around Monks Park or the Little Bay Walking Trails, or a day at Monument Beach. If food and drink are more your thing, go to the LOBSTER TRAP, TUK TUK THAI FOOD, CORNER CAFE, GRAZIELLA’S PIZZA, or WHISTLE STOP ICE CREAM SHOP. If camping, fishing, swimming and biking is more your speed, stay on the Sagamore side and go to the Scusset Beach State Reservation. Or if you fancy yourself a history buff head to the Aptucxet Trading Post, Gray Gables Railroad Station and the Salt Works, all part of the Bourne Historical Society’s efforts to keep the history of the area alive. Whether you like cruising on the water or simply watching boats go by you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for at Bassett’s Island, Lawrence Island, or Red Brook Harbor or sitting outside with a beverage in hand at the CHART ROOM.

Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.

Heading into Falmouth from the east on Route 28, pick your pleasure by either exploring the grounds of the WAQUOIT BAY NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE or stopping by BAD MARTHA’S BREWERY for some live music and a pint before taking the beach route for spectacular views of Vineyard Sound and glimpses of Martha’s Vineyard. Winding your way towards downtown, you’ll pass Falmouth Heights Beach and the Cape’s very own Central Park, where you can relax with a book or play a game of basketball. Main Street Falmouth bustles with activity year round and opportunities to shop and dine local at boutiques like TRENDY TOTS, STORY, CELEBRATIONS, THE GILDED OYSTER and EUGENE HENRY’S GASTRONOMICAL DELIGHTS, and eateries like DILLY’S TAQUERIA, DEVOUR, BLUEFINS, ANEJO, PICKLE JAR KITCHEN, and OSTERIA LA CIVETTA. Organizations like the MUSEUMS ON THE GREEN, HIGHFIELD HALL, the FALMOUTH THEATER GUILD or the FALMOUTH ARTS CENTER let you take in some culture. Heading down to Woods Hole, whether it is by bike (if you don’t have one, you can rent one from CORNER CYCLE) or car, you will find lots of spots for picture perfect photo opportunities whether it is on the Shining Sea Bikeway or at Spohr Gardens, Nobska Light, or the Knob at Quissett Harbor. Once you are in Woods Hole grab a quick bite or a coffee at QUICK’S HOLE, PIE IN THE SKY or COFFEE OBSESSION, post up overlooking the harbor at SHUCKERS or the CAPTAIN KIDD, or settle in for a nice meal at the LANDFALL or WATER STREET KITCHEN. The village is also home to a world renowned scientific community, and the OCEAN SCIENCE DISCOVERY CENTER for the WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION can fill you in on their work. And if you find yourself in the area at the right time of year, check out the lineup at the WOODS HOLE FILM FESTIVAL. Finish up the day with a bottle of wine from the CAPE COD WINERY, treats from DANA’S KITCHEN, the makings for a cheese plate at the NORTH FALMOUTH CHEESE SHOP, or grab a cone from EULINDA’S to enjoy the most epic sunset at Old Silver Beach.

EXPL BARNSTABLE is the Cape’s largest

town, comprised of seven villages - each with their own something-special to offer.

YARMOUTH is a town with plenty of spots for both kids and adults to play.

Traveling down Route 28 you’ll have your choice of fun and games at the CAPE COD INFLATABLE PARK and SKULL ISLAND ADVENTURES SPORTS COMPLEX or WILD LAGOON and PUTTERS PARADISE for mini-golf. You can also check out the WHYDAH PIRATE MUSEUM and the CAPE COD CULTURAL CENTER for different representations of the region’s culture. In this part of town you’ll find a variety of restaurant choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Start the day at the tried-and-true HEARTH N’ KETTLE, enjoy a traditional Irish breakfast at the KELTIC KITCHEN or something more contemporary at ANN & FRAN’S. Grab lunch at OLD KING’S COFFFEEHOUSE or the JERK CAFE and take it over to Mill Creek Park or the Baxter Grist Mill for a picnic. In the evening, get some Vietnamese at PHO THUAN LUI, Mexican at EL MARIACHI or Italian at DIPARMA and then take in some live music at the MUSIC ROOM or THE LOFT. Spending time on the northside in Yarmouthport never disappoints, whether you are looking to shop, dine, or get outside. Right on 6A you’ll find unique shops like JUST PICKED GIFTs, DESIGN WORKS and SIMPLY VINTAGE, a choice for every food palate like OPTIMIST CAFE, JACK’S OUTBACK, OLD YARMOUTH INN and INAHO, or enjoy craft cocktails at the COMPASS ROSE or GRILL 43. Head off of the scenic highway to experience the natural environment. Check out the boardwalk at Gray’s Beach, hang out with the farm animals at TAYLOR BRAY FARM, or simply turn left and wind your way through the side streets and neighborhoods to peek at the secret views of the bay, creeks and salt marshes. Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.

36

Barnstable Village is tucked away on historic Old King’s Highway. Get to know the region’s history at STURGIS LIBRARY, the keeper of the area’s genealogy, or at the COAST GUARD HERITAGE MUSEUM (where you can also join a haunted history walking tour). Stop by the farmstand at HARVEST MOON FARM, fuel up at NIRVANA, BARNSTABLE MARKET or BUTTERCUP CAFE or visit BARNSTABLE TUSCAN CUISINE for a meal on the patio overlooking Main Street. Enjoy water views at MATTAKEESE WHARF or OSTERVILLE FISH TOO. Go on a trip with the HYANNIS WHALE WATCHER CRUISES, disembark to catch the perfect sunset at Millway Beach. Continuing on 6A you’ll find Barnstable’s crown jewel: Sandy Neck Beach where you can hike a few trails, take in spectacular nature views, go off-roading with an ORV for a much more immersive experience, or simply spend a day at the beach. The 1200 acre West Barnstable Conservation Area, which is great for both hiking and mountain biking, connects to the village of Marstons Mills, home to Cape Cod Airfield’s skydiving and bi-plane rides, Burgess Park’s disc golf course, and Mystic Lake where you can kayak and SUP. Afterwards, refuel at MORNING GLORY CAFE, the FIG TREE CAFE or SAGA FUSION and browse shops like THE GIFT COLLECTION and PLUM PORCH. Make your way to Cotuit for a little bit of arts and culture at CAHOON MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART and COTUIT CENTER FOR THE ARTS and for some great nature walks at Crocker Neck Conservation Area. Main Street, Osterville is a great spot for shopping and an evening out. Check out the OSTERVILLE MERCANTILE for great gifts, the SHOE SALON OF OSTERVILLE for the latest shoe trends, POCKETFUL OF POSIES for the kids, EDEN SKINCARE & MAKEUP for some natural bath and beauty and BELLA OF CAPE COD for jewelry and accessories. Dinner can be a little more casual at CRISP or upscale at FIVE BAYS BISTRO. For a real classic Cape Cod feel, check out Centerville where you’ve got the popular Craigville Beach, the 1856 COUNTRY STORE for candy and gifts and FOUR SEAS ICE CREAM for a classic ice cream cone.

ORING THE MID CAPE HYANNIS is the urban center of the Cape,

home to a year-round commercial and business district but it is also a village showcasing what makes Cape Cod so special: beaches, unique shops and restaurants, and arts and culture that reflects the area’s history as well as its residents. Downtown Hyannis is home to hundreds of locally owned businesses and attractions and offers a full day of enjoyment and exploration. Start your morning at the DAILY PAPER or grab Sunday Brunch at THE WEST END before taking a stroll down Main Street where you will find everything on your shopping list like gifts and home decor at LOVE LIVE LOCAL’S RETAIL SHOP, SEAPORIUM, ALLIUM, SOHO ARTS CO., or RED FISH BLUE FISH, the latest fashions at PURITAN CAPE COD, BELLA CRIS, COUNTRY SOUL, MOONSHINE LEATHER, and CHELSEA’S SWIMWEAR, bespoke jewelry at JEWELCRAFT, goodies for the littles at BUGG’S TOY STORE, and gear for your outdoor adventures at MASS BAY and BOARDING HOUSE. Next check out the ZION UNION HERITAGE MUSEUM that highlights the contributions of people of color in the region, and then take the Walkway to the Sea from the Chief Iyannough Statue or follow the Kennedy Legacy Trail from the JFK HYANNIS MUSEUM down to the Hyannis Harbor to Veteran’s or Kalmus Beach, checking out the HYARTS ARTIST SHANTIES and the CAPE COD MARITIME MUSEUM along the way. Get out on the water with the kids on a PIRATE BOAT TOUR, your fellow anglers on HYLINE’S DEEP SEA FISHING CRUISES or with a group of friends on BAY SPIRIT’s cruise around Nantucket Sound. Main Street dining options abound with a tasty lunch available at THE LOCAL JUICE, THE LITTLE SANDWICH SHOP, OCEAN STREET CAFE, PALIO’S PIZZA, EL MARIACHI LOCO, PERRY LIMA CAFE and a delicious dinner at TASTE OF SIAM, PIZZA BARBONE, FRESH KETCH, THE NAKED OYSTER, EMBARGO, ANEJO, and TAP CITY GRILLE. Or dine by the water at BAXTER’S, THE BLACK CAT, TUGBOATS or SPANKY’S. Outside of downtown, visit CAPE COD BEER for an IPA or a Shoal Hope Cider and some live music under their tent, the MOM & POPS BURGERS FOOD TRUCK parked at BARNSTABLE BREWING where you can also enjoy a craft brew, or sushi and sake at MISAKI.

DENNIS has much to explore throughout the entire town, whether you find yourself on the northside or the southside.

The northside beaches of Dennis are some of the most popular on the Cape, and are perfect for making it a long day at the beach. Head to Chapin Beach, Corporation Beach or Mayflower Beach, grabbing lunch and snacks at UNDERGROUND BAKERY, THE MERC, HARVEST GALLERY PROVISIONS, VILLAGE COFFEE SHOP or CAPEABILITIES FARM & MARKET on the way. Enjoy the afternoon with a treat at CAPTAIN FROSTY’S or do some shopping in the area at SALT YARN SHOP, UNFINISHED BUSINESS, MOCEAN, LITTLENECKS, ELBURNE, SEASIDE DESIGN STUDIO, ROSS COPPELMAN GOLDSMITH or SCARGO POTTERY’s legendary open air gallery. Rest up before dinner at THE PHEASANT, SCARGO CAFE or SESUIT HARBOR CAFE and some entertainment at CAPE CINEMA or the CAPE PLAYHOUSE. If you are looking for a change of scenery make your way to the southside of town, stopping by DEVIL’S PURSE BREWERY on the way. In Dennis Port, walk Main Street for shopping at LA BELLE’S GENERAL STORE and SODIUM or a bite at BUCKIE’S. For waterfront views and five star meals check out PELHAM HOUSE RESORT or the OCEAN HOUSE. West Dennis is also not-to-be-missed whether you go for coffee at THREE FINS, a yoga class at NOVÉ, shopping for housewares at FRESH INTERIORS, a cute top at MERMAIDS ON CAPE COD, on-thewater gear at INLAND SEA WINDSURF COMPANY, fixins for dinner at THE WEST VILLAGE CHEESE AND PASTA SHOP, a taco at LA TACODILLA, some kitsch at SHIVER ME TIMBERS SPECIALTIES, tasty donuts at CAPTAIN BAKER’S, or a nightcap at the SAND DOLLAR.

LOVE LOCAL FESTS 2021 marks the 9th season of the Love Local Fests, community festivals that celebrate local business, local products, and local musicians. They are a chance for people to gather and show their support for the Cape Cod small business community. The events are always free and open to the public and feature the work of dozens of Cape Cod makers, artisans, artists, farmers, food trucks, and craft beverages, along with local entertainment and opportunities to connect with the community. Rules, regulations and guidelines about community events are changing and evolving all the time, and we have no way of knowing exactly what 2021 will look like, we will work to make an in-person event happen within state and town guidelines in order to connect Cape Cod’s artists, producers + makers to

consumers who want to shop local and invest in our local economy. For those of you who prefer to continue to stay closer to home, we will continue our 2020 practice of bringing the spirit of the Fest online to lovelivelocal.com and social media. The summer and fall festivals take place at Aselton Park overlooking Hyannis Harbor, and our Holiday Edition takes place indoors and is the ultimate holiday shopping experience with over 100 of the Cape’s best local vendors. Mark your calendars for July 25, September 26 and December 4 + 5 and follow along on social media, lovelivelocal.com, or sign up for our monthly email for more information on how to connect, engage and shop local at the 2021 Love Local Fests both in person and online!

E X P LO R BREWSTER envelopes you with a sense of seaside calm, which is likely due to the palpable presence of the natural environment.

CHATHAM is known for its cultural

attractions, natural wonders and local shops and restaurants that when fully explored offer you a look into the classic Cape Cod life. Hitting the heart of Chatham’s downtown is a must. But first, breakfast, at either HANGAR B or the CHATHAM FILLING STATION. Once you’re ready for some shopping you’ll find all of your wants and needs at shops like CHANGING TIDES CONSIGNMENT, FISHERMAN’S DAUGHTER, IF THE SHOE FITS, MAYFLOWER SHOP and at specialty stores like GUSTARE OLIVE OILS & VINEGARS, WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS and the COOK’S NOOK. And when you’ve worked up your appetite again head to CHATHAM COOKWARE for a sandwich, CHATHAM SQUIRE for a brew or the IMPUDENT OYSTER for classic local fare. Dive deeper into the heart of local culture by heading to 1830 SEA SALT for a tour of the saltworks facility, the ATWOOD MUSEUM for a look into maritime history and the Wampanoag Tribe (the original settlers of the area), the MARCONI MARITIME MUSEUM, Chatham Light and the Coast Guard Station, as well as driving Shore Road to the Chatham Fish Pier where daily catches are unloaded and sold. Spending the day on and near the water should be at the top of your list. Take the opportunity to be a citizen scientist with the ATLANTIC WHITE SHARK CONSERVANCY on one of their white shark expeditions, explore the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge or post up at Forest Beach or Harding Beach. At the end of the day grab some bites to-go from THE TALKATIVE PIG for a tasty pizza, MAC’S CHATHAM FISH & LOBSTER for classic seafood, THE CORNER STORE for a burrito or BRANCHES GRILL for Caribbean-American cuisine.

54

Immersing yourself in nature is impossible not to do in Brewster where you will find Nickerson State Park, which has 1900 acres of sandy soil, scrub pine forest, kettle ponds and camping sites and is a great spot to pick up the Cape Cod Rail Trail to head down to Wellfleet or back up to Yarmouth. Additionally, the CAPE COD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY offers programming on the natural world as well as walking trails like the Stony Brook Valley Preserve and Wing’s Island. You can also head to Drummer Boy Park where you can take in gorgeous water views, bring the kids to the playground or to fly a kite, and visit the Windmill Village where you can explore the Higgins Farm Windmill and the Hopkins Blacksmith Shop. Traveling down route 6A - now designated a National Scenic Byway - you will not only feel the Cape’s history, but will also find the opportunity for antiquing and gallery hopping. Check out one of the many local art galleries, like STRUNA GALLERIES, PARSONS ART GALLERY, or take a slight detour to the UNDERGROUND GALLERY, which is quite literally under 100 tons of earth. Obtaining sustenance for your activities can be achieved by heading for a cup of coffee from SNOWY OWL COFFEE ROASTERS, fresh produce from CHATHAM BARS INN FARM, vegan delights at FARE AND JUST KITCHEN, a taste of old Cape Cod at COBIE’S CLAM SHACK, a farm-to-table dinner or Sunday Brunch at APT CAPE COD, or penny candy from the BREWSTER GENERAL STORE. The bayside beaches like Breakwater Beach, Paines Creek Beach and Linnell Landing Beach are great from dawn to dusk and where you’ll catch sight of the infamous Brewster Flats created by the ebbs and flows of the daily tide.

E X P LO R WELLFLEET is a special enclave for

surfers, artists and fishermen that has much for both visitors and locals to get up to. Driving along Route 6, you’ll find many attractions right on the main thoroughfare, as well as if you head to the oceanside or bayside.

EASTHAM’s access to the Cape Cod

National Seashore, celebration of area history and unique local businesses radiates Cape Cod appeal. Experiencing all of the great local businesses should definitely be on the top of your to-do list. Start your day with a cinnamon roll or a mixed berry scone at LAURA & TONY’S KITCHEN then head to BEANSTOCK COFFEE ROASTERS for a cup of cold brew before visiting PURE VITA MODERN APOTHECARY for some CBD products and ARTICHOKE for hand printed tees, gift items and jewelry. For lunch, grab a taco from JOEY’S JOINT, a New York slice at GOOD EATS ON 6 or cajun popcorn shrimp at BASCO GRILL, or if hunger hits later on in the day head to local favorite the LOCAL BREAK for American fare or BRINE for more global cuisine. Eastham’s crowning glory is its connection to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Coast Guard Beach is expansive and impressive, Nauset Light is iconic, and the Salt Pond Visitor Center provides plenty of spots to hike and bike, a gift shop and a wealth of information about the natural and human history of the national park. The bay side’s Hatch Beach, Herring Brook Beach and Kingsbury Beach offer a more low-key day at the beach. And POIT’S LIGHTHOUSE MINI GOLF brings some additional wholesome family fun. You can experience more area attractions with a hike through the Fort Hill Rural Historic District, a visit to First Encounter Beach or Doane Rock, or by stopping at Three Sisters Lighthouses and the Old Coast Guard Station.

A wide variety of dining options are available before you take a left or a right off the highway, including the BLOCK & TACKLE, C SHORE KITCHEN, VAN RENSSELAER’S or P.B. BOULANGERIE and entertainment is offered for those who love the theater at W.H.A.T., those who love live music at WELLFLEET PRESERVATION HALL, those who love the cinema at the WELLFLEET DRIVE-IN, and those who love the natural world at the WELLFLEET BAY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. The downtown area is host to a number of art galleries like THE WORKS GALLERY, OFF MAIN GALLERY and LEFT BANK GALLERY and unique shops like THE CUSTOMS HOUSE FINE PAPER & FANCY GOODS, SALT, NICHOLAS HARRISON GALLERY, UP FRONT CLOTHING, ABIYOYO, and DRIFT HOME & GIFT. Grab breakfast at FOX + CROW CAFE, lunch at the FLYING FISH, dinner at the WICKED OYSTER and drinks at WINSLOW’S TAVERN. Down by the harbor you can catch stunning views of Cape Cod Bay and Great Island (which is worth exploring all on its own) and check out contemporary art at the FRYING PAN GALLERY or whimsical gifts at WELLFLEET MARINE RETAIL. For a taste of local seafood head to MAC’S or THE PEARL, for a downhome dining experience head to the BOOKSTORE RESTAURANT, or for a farm-to-plate experience check out what they’re cooking up at CERALDI. The oceanside presents many ways to soak up some sand and surf. Head to the Cape Cod Seashore beaches of Lecounts Hollow, White Crest Beach or Cahoon Hollow Beach for a day at the beach, and don’t miss popping into the iconic WELLFLEET BEACHCOMBER for some beach eats and live music.

Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.
