Our Mission

W

elcome to Love Live Local’s 6th annual Love Local Field Guide! Producing this publication is one of the ways in which we fulfill our nonprofit mission to communicate the importance of supporting Cape Cod’s locally made, grown and owned, and provide them with a way in which to share their brands, products, stories and commitment to the community.

Love Live Local is a Cape Cod organization dedicated to community advocacy and educating consumers on the importance of shopping local. Our mission is to foster an economically sustainable, creative and exciting future for the Cape and help all those who love this place participate in keeping it special.

It’s true, the beginning of this new decade has not quite turned out how anyone had hoped, and many of us have already spent a lot of time this year figuring out how to make lemonade out of pandemic lemons. The reality is that 2020 might not look the way we planned, but that doesn’t mean that locals, second homeowners and visitors can’t still create their Cape Cod bucket list and continue exploring, connecting, shopping, enjoying and supporting our small business community when they need it most! In this year’s guide you will find ideas to add to your bucket list in our town-by-town guides along with insider tips for popular spots and hidden gems. This guide will also serve as your go-to resource for where and how to shop local all year round. We also fill you in on some of our own initiatives that are part of our overall aim to foster an economically sustainable, creative and exciting future for the Cape and help all those who love this place participate in keeping it special.

L O C A L M AT T E R S Measuring Local Impact Over the past five decades businesses across the country have been facing many challenges due to a variety of market forces, corporate consolidation and appropriation, the growing popularity of online commerce, as well as public policy decisions that have favored big business over small mom and pop shops. As a result, the number of small businesses started

and online purchases send money outside of the community to the areas where they are headquartered. This is to the extreme detriment to local communities, because it has been proven that local businesses generate a substantial local premium, or added economic benefit, over corporate businesses. When dollars are spent locally, they can in turn be re-spent locally, raising the overall level of economic activity, paying more salaries, and building the local tax base. This recirculation of money leads to an increase of economic activity, the degree to which is entirely dependent on the percentage of money spent locally. In order to quantify and assess the impact of locally owned businesses right here on Cape Cod, as compared to national corporations, in May 2020, Love Live Local commissioned a study by consulting firm Civic Economics who has conducted several similar studies in communities across the country. The Civic Economics analysis, which involved surveying local businesses in the hospitality sector, found that local retailers and restaurants keep about 2-4 times as much money in the local

and sustained in the United States has been on a steady decline since the 1970s, a trend that economists are saying is slowing job growth. What’s more, locally owned businesses play a central role in healthy and strong communities, and since 2013 Love Live Local has been communicating their importance to Cape Cod and citing study after study that shows small businesses make communities unique, create more jobs, bring in more tax revenue, donate more to local charities, are more invested in the community’s welfare, contribute less to sprawl, and value their customers more. While national businesses have a role to play in every economy, purchases from national corporations typically cause money to leave the local economy, as chain businesses

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

economy as their national chain competitors; and online retailers return virtually $0 to local communities. Stated differently, locally owned businesses consistently exceed their chain and online competitors in recirculating their money in the local economy, creating more local jobs and wealth. Based on the data analysis of the Civic Economic survey, retailers and restaurants on Cape Cod return a total of 50.0% and 55.7% respectively, of all of their revenue to the local economy. National chain retail stores recirculate an average of 13.6% of all revenue within the local markets that host its stores, and national chain restaurants return an average of 30.4% of all revenue to the local economy.

Purchases from online retailers not based on Cape Cod return virtually no money to the local community. Put into real dollars: according to the 2017 Economic Census, Barnstable County produced retail sales across all lines of goods of roughly

$3.0 billion (when excluding auto sales, gas stations, and non-store retailers), thus a market shift of just 10% from chains to independents would retain an additional $112 million in the local economy every year. Additionally, if Amazon’s online sales in Barnstable County had occurred in independent retailers, they would support 125 additional retail outlets and 1,739 additional jobs. Amazon’s estimated sales represent slightly more than 5 percent of all retail sales (excluding auto and non-store retail) and this money is leaving the region with little to no return for the residents and visitors to Cape Cod. This analysis is one in a long line of studies nationwide in which Civic Economics has applied a similar methodology to gain an understanding of the economic impact of independent, locally owned businesses. In every case, the findings have been unequivocal: independently owned local businesses bring substantial benefits to their local economies when compared to their chain and online competitors. While chain stores and restaurants and online sellers extract locally generated revenues from the community with each nightly bank transaction and click of the mouse, independents are creating a virtuous cycle of local spending. The extra dollars in the local economy produce more jobs for residents, extra tax revenues for local governments, more investment in commercial and residential districts, and enhanced support for local nonprofits. In short, these businesses create stronger and healthier communities to live, work and visit. We were able to complete this study thanks to the support from our Mission Supporters Cape Cod Five, Mid-Cape Home Centers, Nauset Disposal, Cape Cod Young Professionals and Duffy Health Center. CAPE COD RESILIENCE FUND Small businesses are the cornerstone, the backbone, the heartbeat of the Cape Cod community. And virtually overnight, many of them had their worlds turned upside down due to the coronavirus epidemic. While necessary, strict mandates for business operations during the public health crisis, coupled with an uncertain outlook for the future and limited availability of government funding, took the wind out of these businesses’ sails and significantly impacted their businesses’ ability to survive and thrive.

Established in response to devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our region’s small business community, our goal was to launch the Cape Cod Resilience Fund to provide economic relief to our most vulnerable businesses through small grants that would supplement day-to-day operational expenses. In the first six weeks of fundraising - with the help of with the help of individual donors, generous business partners, and the fundraising efforts of 35 local businesses and organizations, and a grant obtained by the Town of Barnstable we were able to raise $49,000 for our first round of grants. And we were able to provide at least some financial assistance to forty-seven small local businesses across Cape Cod. However, 108 businesses submitted applications for the grants for the first round of funding, which indicates the need for financial assistance in the region is great, and that need will persist as the effects of the economic shutdown and continued slowdown continue to be felt. So, the Cape Cod Resilience Fund will carry on for as long as it is necessary and subsequent grant giving rounds will be made because the long-term economic sustainability of our region is tied to the fate of our small businesses.

Even facing these terrible circumstances, our Cape Cod businesses stepped up for this community as they always do, changing their operations and continually adapting to accommodate new guidelines while still meeting the community’s wants and needs. And of course, they continued to give back to Cape Cod in every way they knew how. They fed our community members on the front lines, cut up their own clothing inventory to make face masks and donated supplies and money to those who hit hard times.

To learn more, help spread the word and to donate please visit lovelivelocal.com/resilience.

As government assistance came through, we still knew this would not be enough to make up for all of the losses they incurred. This is why, with the help of the Hyannis Main Street Businesses Improvement District, we created the Cape Cod Resilience Fund.

UPPER CAPE

Falmouth

Tucked between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound the town of Falmouth is great for exploring, shopping, dining and taking in some of the best scenery you’ll find in the region.

Bourne

Bourne can be considered the gateway to Cape Cod, but is certainly not a town to simply pass through. Before crossing over the Bourne Bridge to head South on Route 28 be sure to cruise around Buzzards Bay stopping at Vela Juice Bar for a dose of fruits and veggies, Krua Thai for a delicious stir fry, Mahoney’s on Main for classic fare and homey atmosphere, or the Bay End Farm farmstand to stock up on veggies and tasty baked goods. If you want to experience the natural world check out the Buzzards Bay Recreation Area and visit some seals and turtles at the National Marine Life Center. Once you are on 28, find your way to Shore Road in the village of Pocasset, after making a trip to Cape Cod Crystals for some good energy and a pit stop at Gray Gables Market for some snacks and sandwiches. Take a walk around Monks Park or drive down Circuit Ave towards the Sand Spit on Hen Cove. If the sandy shores are your preference, have some fun-in-the-sun at Monument Beach. If you cross over the Sagamore Bridge onto Route 6 with hunger pangs the Canal Cafe or the Whaleback Restaurant are great for a hearty meal and a bit of a throwback old Cape Cod feel. For more old school feels check out the funky and nautical shop Ship to Shore. For some on-the-water exploration, fuel up at the Daily Brew before checking out Bassett’s Island, Lawrence Island, or Red Brook Harbor to launch your boat or board. Or, let someone else do the work while you take in the scenery while on a Cape Cod Canal Cruise. Prefer to stay on dry land? Be sure to cruise down the Cape Cod Canal bike path. Post outdoor activity, find sustenance and adult beverages at the Chart Room, Lobster Trap, Parrot Bar & Grill or the Courtyard.

18

As you wind your way down Route 28A through North and West Falmouth, you’ll find some gems off the beaten path of the more trafficked downtown Falmouth like Epic Oyster, Talk of the Town Diner, the North Falmouth Cheese Shop, Village Cafe or Chapoquoit (Chappy) Grill. For an infusion of salt air, take some detours to West Falmouth Harbor, Chapoquoit Beach and Black Beach. When you do get to downtown Falmouth, you’ll find it is filled with plenty of opportunity to shop local at boutiques like Settings, the Gilded Oyster, Celebrations and Story. You can also grab lunch from Pickle Jar Kitchen, Devour or Betsy’s Diner and take it to-go for a picnic on the Falmouth Library lawn, Spohr Gardens or Falmouth Marine Park, also the site of an artisan and farmers market on Thursdays throughout the spring and summer. To take in some local history and culture in the area make your way to the Museums on the Green or Highfield Hall, where at the right time of year you can experience their popular fairy garden and outdoor sculptural installations. Dinner and dessert options are also plentiful on and around Main Street where you’ll find a variety of options for your palette at C Salt, Anejo, Osteria La Civetta, Estia and La Cucina Sul Mar. But save room for at least a scoop of lobster ice cream at Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium. The Shining Sea Bikeway, which spans from North Falmouth to the village of Woods Hole, is one of the most popular attractions in town, as it offers awe inspiring sights of the ocean, woodlands and salt marshes. If you ride it all the way into Woods Hole, park your bike and grab a bite at Quick’s Hole, Pie in the Sky or Woods Hole Market and check out the cute shops like Inlet, Woods Hole Handworks and Liberty House. Cocktail hour? Grab a seat at the Landfall, Water Street Kitchen or the Captain Kidd. Heading out of Woods Hole, be sure to take the beach route passing by the impressive and iconic Nobska Light, Surf Drive Beach and through the Falmouth Heights all the way over to East Falmouth where you can do a tasting of some local craft beverages at Bad Martha’s Brewery or Cape Cod Winery.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

Sandwich

Experiencing Sandwich in some ways feels like going back in time. As Cape Cod’s oldest incorporated town, it has held on to the history and nostalgia, creating a homey feel throughout the town. For a little bit of old school culture you can check out the Heritage Museum & Gardens where you can not only find beautiful gardens but also an antique car collection, as well as the Sandwich Glass Museum, which chronicles Sandwich’s involvement in the glass blowing industry. The area’s downtown on Main and Jarves Streets offers shopping at independent shops like Modern Vintage, Salt & Stripes and the Spotted Cod, as well as a variety of dining spots like the quaint patio at the Brown Jug, the more casual Next Door Burger Bar and the more upscale Daniel Webster Inn, where you can also take food to-go for a picnic overlooking Shawme Lake at the Dexter Grist Mill or the Hoxie House Museum. Head to Merchants Square for some browsing at Wish Gift Co., Tails in the Sand, Sundance Clothing and Robert Guertin Jewelers and then grab a sandwich at Cafe Chew, some BBQ at Off the Grid food truck or a cone at Twin Acres Ice Cream Shoppe and take it over to the Sandwich Boardwalk to enjoy while overlooking Cape Cod Bay. If you’re into watching boats make their way through the Cape Cod Canal, post up at the outdoor patio at Fisherman’s View. Driving down 6A in Sandwich feels like taking in a bit of history on its own, but you will also come across some of the most tried-and-true local businesses like Scenic Roots and Titcomb’s Bookshop as well as some great dining options like Father’s Kitchen and Taphouse. There are plenty of activities for kids around town, such as blueberry picking at The Blueberry Bog or apple and pumpkin picking at Crow Farm, workshops at the Green Briar Nature Center and a self-guided tour of the Sandwich Fish Hatchery where you can feed the fish to watch them jump. Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.

Mashpee

Mashpee is probably best known for being the home of the Wampanoag Tribe and the keeper of their history. The town also has great spots to connect with the Cape’s natural environment and wine, dine and shop. Learn more about the traditions, struggles and triumphs of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe through their website and events, as well as at the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum and the Mashpee Archives. Once you’ve gotten fully educated, go for a walk in the woods at the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge or the Mashpee River Woodlands. Or if you’d rather explore nature via the area’s waterways head to Rideaway Adventures for a guided SUP or kayak tour of Popponesset Bay or head out on your own and explore Mashpee Neck. When hunger strikes there are plenty of options for lunch or dinner in Mashpee Commons and the surrounding area like Rory’s, Trevi, Bleu, Siena or Bagel Haven, or if coffee is your fuel, head to the Cape Cod Coffee Roasters new roasting facility for a tour and tasting. Grab some treats at The Chocolate Rose, Polar Cave, Sweet Waves or Washashore Bakery before or after doing some shopping for the little ones at Fox & Kit, Cape Kids and Red Balloon Toy Shop and the furry ones at Hot Diggity. Pick something up for yourself at the Art Coddage, Fab Villa, innerglow yoga or Market Street Bookshop. Or in the warmer seasons pop over to Popponesset Marketplace for some oysters, minigolf or browsing the cute shops. Start or end your day at South Cape Beach where you can soak up the sun, enjoy the ocean breeze at dusk or check out the sand dunes, coastal ponds and salt marshes.

Barnstable

Barnstable is the largest town on Cape Cod and is made up of seven distinct villages, each with their own personalities and claims to fame. Start in the village of Cotuit with a walk or a drive down Main Street to Ropes Beach or Loop Beach to take in the scenes of Cotuit Bay and Sampson’s Island. Make sure to check out the offerings of local cultural favorites the Cahoon Museum of American Art and Cotuit Center for the Arts. If you find yourself in the area in the evening, enjoy the vintage vibes and the authentic Italian menu of the Villaggio restaurant. Head down Route 28 to the new and improved downtown Marstons Mills where you can now walk easily enjoying the shops, and services in the village like The Gift Collection, Plum Porch, Luminaria Aesthetics and grabbing a killer breakfast at The Mills Restaurant or a hearty sandwich at Morning Glory Cafe. Just outside this area you can find a taste of Asia at Saga Fusion or a sweet Ecuadorian treat at Chukulati Chocolate Co. After you’ve fueled up, go for a kayak ride on Mystic Lake, a round of disc golf at Burgess Park, hike or mountain bike the 1200 acres of the West Barnstable Conservation Area, play at Luke’s Love Boundless Playground, or watch the bi-planes take off at the Cape Cod Airfield. Next stop is Osterville where you can spend the afternoon shopping on Main Street at Osterville Mercantile, the Shoe Salon of Osterville, Pocketful of Posies, Eden Skincare & Makeup and Bella of Cape Cod to name a few. Once you’ve worked up a bit of an appetite pick up some goodies for a picnic at Armstrong Kelley Park at Amie Bakery or Fancy’s Market, opt for dinner at Crisp or Five Bays Bistro. Follow Main Street toward Centerville for some Cape Cod classics: the popular Craigville Beach, a fried fish sandwich at the Barnacle Snack Bar, cruising down Long Beach and Bumps River, shopping for candy and gifts at the 1856 Country Store and indulging in a sundae at Four Seas Ice Cream. Another classic Cape Cod experience is taking the winding drive down Route 6A into Barnstable Village where you will find gorgeous artwork at Barnstable Pottery, grab sips and snack at Barnstable Market, Barnstable Tuscan Cuisine, the Dolphin and Mattakeese Wharf; connecting points for whale watching with the Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises, and a perfect sunset view at Millway Beach.

28

Hyannis

To some Hyannis is simply considered a village in Barnstable but to many it is the year-round bustling commercial and business hub of Cape Cod. But make no mistake there is more to do than just check errands off of your to-do list. Downtown Hyannis offers a full day of browsing local shops, dining at a few of the many eateries, taking in local history and breathing in the salt air. Breakfast is served at the Daily Paper or Rendezvous Cafe to get you ready to shop on Hyannis Main Street. There you’ll find a wide variety of stores like Soho Arts Co., Red Fish Blue Fish, Puritan Cape Cod, Islands, Moonshine Leather, Chelsea’s Swimwear, Jewelcraft, Mass Bay, Bugg’s Toy Store, Seaporium, and our own Love Live Local retail shop offering clothing, jewelry, gifts and souvenirs. For a lunch break check out Colombo’s Cafe, Taste of Siam, Pizza Barbone, Ocean Street Cafe or Fresh Ketch (kid friendly!) and picnic at Aselton Park or Veteran’s Beach before exploring the historical landmarks in the area - the statue of Chief Iyannough at the top of the Village Green, the Kennedy Legacy Trail that honors JFK and his family’s connection to the Cape, or the Zion Union Heritage Museum that highlights the contributions of people of color in the region. Take the Walkway to the Sea down to the Hyannis Harbor to check out the HyArts Artist Shanties, watch the fishing boats unload their hauls, have an afternoon beverage at the Black Cat, take a Pirate Boat Tour with the kids or hop on a Bay Spirit sunset cruise on Nantucket Sound. Wrap up the day with a walk on Kalmus or Keyes Beach, dinner at The West End, The Naked Oyster, Embargo, Misaki or Anejo, a Cape Cod Beer at Tap City Grille, a pint at Finn’s Craft Beer Tap House and a sweet treat from Smith Family Popcorn, Katie’s Ice Cream, Kandy Korner or Little Miss Cupcape.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

Yarmouth

Yarmouth is not a town to be overlooked on the Cape as the area offers plenty to do and see for the young and the young at heart. If you start by driving Route 6A into Yarmouthport, grab a bite to eat at the Optimist Co. and take it to-go to the pavilion at Gray’s Beach before heading to the Edward Gorey House, which celebrates the life of the unique and extraordinary American author and illustrator himself. Do a little shopping at Design Works and Just Picked Gifts, get lost in the stacks at Parnassus Books, meander through the nature trails maintained by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth or head to the Taylor Bray Farm to visit the many farm animals. If you find yourself in that area around dinner time check out the offerings of Inaho, Grill 43 or the Old Yarmouth Inn. On the south side of town you’ll come across some old school entertainment at the Wild Lagoon 18-hole mini-golf course, Skull Island Adventures Sports Complex (think driving range, go-karts, kick ball cages and more), finding treasure at the Whydah Pirate Museum, along with art, music and culinary offerings at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. And of course there’s always the beaches overlooking Nantucket Sound: Seagull Beach, Thatcher Park Beach and Bass River Beach for fun in the sand and sun. When hunger strikes get your breakfast at Old King’s Coffeehouse, Ann & Fran’s or Hearth n’ Kettle, lunch at the Jerk Cafe or Thuan Loi or dinner at the Yarmouth House, DiParma Italian Table, or the Lobster Boat for a water view. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a couple of scoops from Cape Cod Creamery or make a special trip to Robin’s Toffee for some homemade magic.

Dennis

Exploring the town of Dennis on the northside or southside brings plenty of opportunity to not only enjoy the Cape’s natural beauty but also experience unique local businesses. Whether you like being on the water or overlooking it, Bass River is the spot to do both. Head in the direction of Bass River Marina where you can launch a boat on your own or find one to rent, or relax on the outdoor patio at Sundancer’s or the Summer Shanty. Next stop, West Dennis or Sea Street Beach, swinging by Three Fins for a coffee, La Tocadilla for a taco or Knockout Pizza for a slice on the way. After some beach time head to the Sailing Cow for a more casual bite to eat or take it up a notch at the Pelham House Resort or the Ocean House, both of which have beautiful views of Nantucket Sound. Before heading to Main Street Dennis, go off the beaten path and grab a table for breakfast at the Red Cottage, visit Devil’s Purse Brewery to stock up on their delicious Kolsch, or explore the Indian Lands Conservation Area. On the northside of Dennis you will find some of the most popular beaches including Chapin Beach, Corporation Beach and Mayflower Beach along with some great spots to grab food and treats to-go like the Underground Bakery, The Merc or the Ice Cream Smuggler for a picnic at Scargo Pond or Crowe’s Pasture. Before settling in for an evening meal from Harvest Gallery Wine Bar, The Pheasant, FIN or Scargo Cafe be sure to check out the offerings at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and visit the shops along Route 6A like Littlenecks, Salt Yarn Shop, Sundries, Elburne, Seaside Design Studio, Scout Vintage and Ross Coppelman Goldsmith. Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

LOVELIVELOCAL.COM

37

LOVE LOCAL FESTS The Love Local Fests are community events where people gather to show their support for the local business community. Since 2013 we have been organizing these annual gatherings the last Sunday in July and September and the first weekend in December. They are free and open to the public and feature the work of dozens of Cape Cod makers, artisans, artists, farmers, food trucks and local businesses, along with local entertainment and opportunities to connect with the community.

Mark your calendars for July 26, September 27 and December 5 + 6 and follow along on social media, lovelivelocal.com, or sign up for our monthly email for more information on how to connect, engage and shop local at the 2020 Love Local Fests, whether the event is in person or online! Sincerest thanks to our sponsor Cape Cod 5 for continuing their commitment to support our event and all of the local businesses that participate.

2020 marks the 8th season of the Love Local Fests, and in a typical year, the summer festivals take place at Aselton Park overlooking Hyannis Harbor, and our Holiday Edition takes place indoors and is the ultimate holiday shopping experience with over 100 of the Cape’s best local vendors. But we all know 2020 is not a typical year. Rules, regulations and guidelines about community events are changing and evolving all the time, and it is hard to know what the Love Local Fests will look like from month to month. But what we do know is that we are dedicated to continuing to create something that brings together the Cape Cod community celebrating it’s amazing and unique local makers, brands, and businesses - whether it is in the physical or virtual space.

LOWER CAPE Chatham

Chatham can be referred to as the quintessential seaside town - surrounded by water and awe-inspiring views, home to unique people and businesses, and the site of some exciting marine animal activity. Between all of the cultural attractions, natural wonders and local shops and restaurants you’re sure to have a full day experiencing it all. Whether your interest is area history, local life, the maritime past or even sharks you’ll find a lot to learn and observe at the Atwood Museum where the Wampanoag Indian Tribe just constructed a replica Native American dwelling, Chatham Fish Pier where daily catches are unloaded and sold, the Marconi Maritime Museum and Chatham Light and the Coast Guard Station, or the Chatham Shark Center where you can encounter some Great Whites (virtually, of course). For nature lovers the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a must for birding, seal watching and hiking. Main Street Chatham has a lot to offer in the way of shopping and browsing with something for everyone from Fisherman’s Daughter and Sundance Clothing for women’s clothing, Yankee Ingenuity for quirky gifts and souvenirs, Artful Hand for handcrafted art and accessories, and Gustare Olive Oils & Vinegars for culinary inspiration. For a jolt of caffeine head to Monomoy Coffee and when hunger strikes check out the patios at Chatham Squire or the Wild Goose Tavern, or get food to-go from Bluefins or Chatham Cookware and head to Kate Gould Park for a picnic where you might time it right with their annual Art in the Park exhibit. Head away from downtown to The Talkative Pig for some traditional family cooking, Mom & Pops for gourmet burgers (including a delicious veggie burger), Branches Grill for Caribbean-American cuisine, or to the Corner Store for one of their infamous burritos. For a real treat go to the Chatham Airport for a fresh and exciting breakfast or lunch experience at Hangar B, watch the small planes take flight and maybe hop on a sightseeing ride yourself with Stick'n Rudder Aero Tours. Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.

42

Brewster

The town of Brewster has a bit of a quieter feel amidst the hustle and bustle of some other towns across the Cape, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty to do to experience what makes the region so special. The serene bayside beaches like Breakwater Beach, Paines Creek Beach and Linnell Landing Beach are where you’ll catch sight of the infamous Brewster Flats created by the ebbs and flows of the daily tide, as well as some pretty amazing sunsets. If you prefer to relax pondside, check out Long Pond Beach and Fisherman’s Landing; or marshside head to Namskaket Marsh or Quivet Marsh Vista. Brewster is also the perfect spot to pick up the Cape Cod Rail Trail as well as some eats nearby at Stone L’Oven Pizza or Guapo’s Tortilla Shack before or after you hop on your bike. Ride all the way to Wellfleet or stay close by and explore the 1900 acres of Nickerson State Park. On the scenic route along 6A you can gallery hop at one of the many local art galleries, check out the shops at Lemon Tree Village, explore the offerings of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and their 400 acres of conservation land, and spend some time picnicking and playing at Drummer Boy Park. You can also find caffeination at Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters, vegan eats at Fare and Just Kitchen, seafood classics at the Brewster Fish House, Italian style surf and turf at Laurino’s, or a cocktail overlooking the water at the Ocean Terrace at Ocean Edge. If home cooking is your aim stop at the Halcyon Farm, Turtle Bog Farm or the Chatham Bars Inn farm stands for some fresh veggies.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

Harwich

Harwich is one of the more laid back towns on the Cape but there are still plenty of things to add to your to-do list. Opportunities to get outside and enjoy the natural world are plentiful around town. Learn about the Cape’s signature crop on a local cranberry bog tour, take a seal cruise on Monomoy Island Excursions, explore the Bell’s Neck Conservation Lands, play pickleball at Brook’s Park, or relax in a locally crafted Cape Cod Beach Chair at Bank Street Beach. Main Street Harwich Port is a definite go-to for browsing local shops full of local brands and unique finds like Murphy’s General Store, Snow Goose Shop, Reciprocity, The Nines Gallery, Solis and Sativa. When you’ve worked up an appetite, get a smoothie bowl at J Bar or a sandwich at the Mason Jar and take it to-go for a picnic overlooking Wychmere Harbor. For a casual dining experience right in the middle of the action, grab a table outdoors at The Port, Mad Minnow, Seal Pub & Cafe, or the Perk Coffee Bar & Beer Garden. Closer to Harwich center are some of the Cape’s hidden gems. Stop at the Cape Cod Lavender Farm and instantly de-stress from the summer buzz, experience one of the Cape’s few wineries, First Crush Winery, where you can enjoy an indoor or outdoor tasting or grab a vegan ice cream from Sweet Izzy. Prefer something a little more formal? Head to 3 Monkeys for Cape inspired American & Japanese cuisine, Cape Sea Grille for a taste of the ocean, or Buca’s Tuscan Roadhouse for Italian. If you are longing for water views try Brax Landing or Saquatucket Harbor.

Orleans

With a bustling downtown and commercial district, Orleans represents the hub of the lower and outer Cape with plenty to explore year-round. Start your day with a walk around Kent’s Point after grabbing coffee and a bite at Hot Chocolate Sparrow, Whisk or Jo Mama’s. Shop downtown with area anchor stores Snow’s Home & Garden, Birdwatcher’s General Store, Savvy on Main, Vintage in Vogue, Main Street Books, Gallant Jewelers, Nauset Surf Shop and Designs by S&R or check out some of the newer boutiques like Homegrown Boutique for contemporary clothing, Blake & Co. for accessories ranging from classic and refined to fun and funky and Trove for unique items by local artists. Grab lunch from Friend’s Marketplace, the Knack or Sunbird and take it to the Jonathan Young Windmill overlooking the Orleans Cove or to Nauset Beach, making sure to stop at the cute shops of East Orleans, Adorn and Weekend along the way. Getting out onto Pleasant Bay, the Cape’s largest embayment, and cruising through the salt pond backwaters is a must-do, made easier when you get outfitted and geared up at Goose Hummock Shop. Wrap up the day with a pint or a Race Point Seltzer at Hog Island Brewery, a round of mini-golf at Cape Escape Adventure Golf, dinner at the Beacon Room, Rock Harbor Grill or La Bella Vita or one of The Local Scoop’s famous ice cream pops and the sunset at Skaket Beach or Rock Harbor.

OUTER CAPE

Wellfleet Eastham

Since it does not have a true downtown like many of the other Cape towns, the heart of Eastham lies in its beaches and outdoor spaces, cultural sites and local businesses. Eastham is the gateway to one of the great wonders of Cape Cod - the Cape Cod National Seashore. At the Salt Pond Visitor Center you will not only find information about the natural and human history of the national park but you will also find a theater, a shop, and plenty of spots to hike and bike and generally enjoy the natural environment. Beach time can also be enjoyed at the Cape Cod National Seashore at Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach, as well as on Cape Cod Bay at Hatch Beach, First Encounter Beach and Herring Brook Beach where you will find calmer waters for relaxing days. Area shops and restaurants should also be part of your relaxation plan. Grab some deliciousness to-go from Mac’s Market & Kitchen or some tacos from Joey’s Joint and take them to the Eastham Windmill or Doane Rock for a picnic, or dine on-site at the Local Break for tasty American fare or Karoo Cafe for the flavor of South Africa. Specialty shops like Pure Vita Modern Apothecary where you’ll find eco-friendly and holistic products and ARTichoke which is stocked with locally made jewelry and gift items alongside the owners’ own artistically screen printed tees are not to be missed Experience some area history and gorgeous views at the same time at the Fort Hill Rural Historic District, Nauset Light, one of the most famous lighthouses on the east coast or head to the Atlantic and checkout Three Sisters Lighthouses or the Old Coast Guard Station.

50

There’s no town on the Cape quite like Wellfleet. A quiet, stunning beach town full of surfers, artists and fishermen swells to a bustling tourist attraction in the summer with no shortage of things to do, see and enjoy. Heading into town, make a pit stop at Salty Duck Pottery and explore Uncle Tim’s Island and be sure to take a selfie on the bridge with Duck Creek in the background. Spend some time exploring the boutiques and restaurants on Main Street like Up Front Clothing, Abiyoyo, Newcomb Hollow Shop, Sick Day, Drift Home & Gift, and Winslow’s Tavern before heading down Commercial Street to the Wellfleet Town Pier where you can shop some more at Frying Pan Gallery and Wellfeet Marine Retail and try one of the many fun and funky dining spots along the way like The Fox + Crow Cafe, Mac’s Shack, Pearl Restaurant & Bar and the Bookstore Restaurant. Outside of downtown, try the newly opened Block & Tackle where you can get a taste of smoked meats and fried chicken, C Shore Kitchen for some farm and dock to table fare, or Van Rensselaer’s for some classic Cape Cod seafood. Then go back in time and take in a movie at the Wellfleet Drive-In. There are also plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the sun and fresh air whether you are craving a day at the beach or a long hike through marshes and woods. Head to the Cape Cod Seashore beaches of Lecounts Hollow, White Crest Beach or Cahoon Hollow Beach for some fun in the sun (no trip to this area would be complete without a visit to the Wellfleet Beachcomber). For some different terrain go to the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, explore Great Island, and the White Cedar Swamp Trail. Or truly experience the Cape Cod fishing culture with a Wellfleet Fish and Farm Tour organized by Wellfleet SPAT.

LOVE LOCAL FIELD GUIDE 2020

Truro

It may be one of the Cape’s quieter towns but what Truro lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality of local businesses and quintessential spots. With more than half its area taken up by the Cape Cod National Seashore, it is easy to find a spectacular beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on which to spend a few hours: Ballston Beach, Longnook Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach or High Head Beach. Or go to Corn Hill Beach, Cold Storage Beach, Fisher Beach on the bayside for great views of Provincetown. To explore more of Truro’s natural world, take a cruise down the Pamet River and into Pamet Hollow, hike on Pilgrim Spring Trail, or climb up to the Jenny Lind Tower or Bearberry Hill Eastern Summit for some gorgeous views. Get some provisions for your day’s activities at the Longnook Meadows Farm farmstand or Salty Market and stock up on some artisanal chocolate, pastries and coffee at Chequessett Chocolate. Spend an afternoon soaking up area landmarks such as Highland Light and the Highland House Museum, wine tasting and touring the grounds at Truro Vineyards & South Hollow Spirits, or browsing the iconic pottery at Jobi Pottery or the wide selection of culinary needs at the Atlantic Spice Company. When you’re ready for dinner check out Montano’s for a mix of classic Italian and seafood, Blackfish for innovative New American cuisine or Captain’s Choice for some tacos and wings. Don’t forget to save room for dessert at Savory & Sweet Escape.

Provincetown

Crossing the town line into Provincetown is only the beginning of the amazement and wonder that the sandy tip of Cape Cod brings. With a rich community culture, a bustling town center and epic ocean views, time spent in P’Town is bound to be fun, festive, relaxing and everything in between. Head down Shore Road onto Commercial Street to get right into the mix. Pop into some private galleries or the Provincetown Art Association and Museum or quirky shops like Mad as a Hatter, Marine Specialties, and Womencrafts along with classics like Wardrobe, MAP and Arcadia. While you are in the downtown area stop by some local landmarks like MacMillan Pier which honors the town’s fishing culture, the Pilgrim Monument’s tribute to the Mayflower Pilgrims and Provincetown Museum’s permanent exhibit on the Wampanoag Indians, or hit up the Lobster Pot for some awardwinning chowder. Alternatively, rent a bike at the Bike Shack and ride through the bike paths of the Cape Cod National Seashore to Race Point Beach or wind through the Province Lands to the upper deck of the Visitor’s Center where you can see expansive views of the area. Or explore the easy hiking trails of the Beech Forest or take the causeway to the Wood End Lighthouse. Take a break at Provincetown Brewing Company for a pint and a dose of craftivism. Then head to a nourishing meal at Spindler’s, Local 186, Blue Monkey Cafe, the Nor’east Beer Garden, Joon Bar and Kitchen, try classics like Fanizzi’s, The Squealing Pig or The Mews Restaurant, or grab a seat on the water at Aqua Bar, Bubala’s by the Bay or the Crown & Anchor. Wrap up your day with a sunset at Race Point Beach or Herring Cove Beach.

Be sure to double check with these spots for their most up-to-date hours of operation, protocols and current offerings.
