It certainly does not feel like football weather, but it is time for some Leopard football. On Saturday night, we play College Station in the Tom Landry Classic at Allen Eagle Stadium. I look forward to proudly cheering on our Lovejoy High School football team, band, color guard,cheerleaders,andMajesticsthisweekend.
AtMondaynight’sboardmeeting,theLovejoyISDBoard of Trustees Legislative Subcommittee provided an important update. Although the regular session of the 88th Texas Legislature concluded on May 29th, there is still active discussion about public education at the statelevel.TheTexasHouseSelectCommitteeon
Educational Opportunity and Enrichment recently released their interim report including recommendations for consideration by the Legislature. The interim report included 30 recommendations related to school choice, school finance, intra- and inter-district student transfers,andschoolaccountability.Thefullreportcanbefoundhere.Thereistalkofanother specialsessionofthe88thLegislatureinOctober.InTexas,specialsessionscanonlybecalled bythegovernor.Ifthisoccurs,itislikelythattheareashighlightedinthecommittee’sreport willbethefocus.
ThedecisionsmadeinAustinimpactyourchildrenandourschooldistrict.Caseinpoint,the TexasLegislaturedeterminesLovejoyISD'sperpupilfundingallotment.Texasis42ndinour countryinper-pupilfunding.Theregularsessionofthe88thTexasLegislatureendedwithno increasetothebasicallotment.Thebasicallotmentof$6,160perstudenthasremainedthe sameforfouryears,despiterisinginflationrates.

Fourth grade students at Puster Elementary attended a "Book Tasting" with Library Media Specialist, Ariel Stewart. Hart Elementary kicked off the school year with their annual ice cream social. Parents, students, and teachers visited - creating connections with new families and reconnecting with friends from last school year. The varsity volleyball team traveled last week to the NISD Classic Tournament, and played very competitive5Aand6Ateams.

Lovejoy Community Member/Parent and former Major League Pitcher, Shawn Tolleson, stopped by last Friday during our Leopard (Leadership) Academy to share some of his experiences with our Baseball Program. He spoke to the boys aboutmaximizingtheirpotential,competingatthehighestlevel,overcoming adversity, and shared some greatstoriesaboutfulfillinghis dreams to pitch at the highest level. The Lovejoy Baseball Program is appreciative of the support of high character role models like Mr. Tolleson in our Community!
