Welcome to Downtown Carlisle Welcome to Downtown Carlisle! On behalf of the Downtown Carlisle Association and all our downtown businesses, I would like to welcome you to our town. Downtown Carlisle is full of exciting shops, restaurants and places for you to learn, be entertained or just enjoy the sights. We are very excited to host you again this year as we look forward to a healthy and prosperous holiday season and new year! We are rich in history dating back to before the American Revolution. We can boast a church that was once attended by George Washington and a courthouse damaged by artillery during the Civil War. I would recommend a walking tour to learn more! Our community also includes nationally recognized institutions of higher education and art. We have Dickinson College, Penn State Dickinson Law School, the U.S. Army War College and Central PA Youth Ballet. We have what you want for the day or evening. Unique shops and fabulous restaurants with international flair dot our streets for your morning coffee and late-night gathering places. Please enjoy some quality time with us in Carlisle. And know you are always welcome here!
Sincerely, Tana Emery Glenn White M&T Bank Executive Director Board President, Downtown Carlisle Association Downtown Carlisle Association

Seasonal Health Ho-Ho-Hold the Expectations by Crystal Oakman
Smiling faces and rosy cheeks. Tables filled with fancy feasts. The vision of holidays we swear must be, will drive us to madness and misery I adore the winter holidays. It’s a time when it seems the whole world collectively turns its head to savor the good in life – family and friends, connection, love. And yet, somehow this wonderful season celebrating warmth and comfort has become anchored by stress and misguided idealism. It’s simply not enough to enjoy the company of loved ones. Now, children must dive into mountains of pristinely wrapped gifts. Now, the feast must rival a Normal Rockwell painting. Now, your holiday schedule is busier than the Beatles’ 1964 world tour. It’s more, more, more, until you’re left exhausted and cranky, willing to take a room at the Overlook Hotel just for some alone time. And with such unattainable visions of the holidays in our heads, things fall short, and the wonderful spirit of the season gets battle axed by the soldier of unmet expectations. So this year, try these tips to temper yourself and hone in on the joy of the season. 1. If the clock is ticking and you haven’t already memorized a box of tried-and-true recipes, order the food. The day before company arrives is so not the time to kick off your romanticization of home cooked meals. Outside of the one or two staple food items that set tradition, the food is the least memorable part of any event unless it’s on fire or causes severe intestinal distress. Save yourself the headache and spend your time out of the kitchen and instead, in good conversation. 2. Schedule sit on the couch in your jammies and do-nothing time. There’s this pervasive belief that if you’re not spending every single holiday minute with loved ones in mind or in person, you’re either selfish or insufferable. But if you wouldn’t visit someone on a random Tuesday in the warmth of summer, why are you giving yourself an aneurysm trying to fit them into your schedule now? The holiday season is not infinite, so do yourself a favor and Maria Kondo your social calendar. Will the event bring you joy? If not, save the visit for a future humdrum month when you’ve got nothing else on the books. And if you choose to be alone? Well, that doesn’t mean you’re not loved or connected; it just means you love and value yourself as much as you love and value others. 3. Everyone pines for the “magic” of the holidays. But life itself is magic. You don’t need a bankroll to create it. The perfect gift, a picturesque meal, a chaos free event? Those things aren’t magic. They’re intent coupled with a crap ton of serendipity. So instead of lamenting when Lady Luck doesn’t show, find the spirit of the season in the mundane. Fawn over the smell of fires warming homes. Marvel at the way frost shimmers on the grass. Snuggle up with loved ones, languishing in the comfort of touch. Set your intent on noting the stillness of sound during snowfall and the feel of cozy socks on your feet. And once you’re enchanted with the world already around you, the stress of trying to create something more melts away.
