On behalf of the Downtown Carlisle Association and all our downtown businesses, I would like to welcome you to our town. Whether you are a native or newly arrived you will find Carlisle to be engaging and inviting. We are rich in history dating back to before the American Revolution. We can boast a church that was once attended by George Washington and a courthouse damaged by artillery during the Civil War. I would recommend a walking tour to learn more! Our community also includes nationally recognized institutions of higher education and art. We have Dickinson College, Penn State Dickinson Law School, the U.S. Army War College and Central PA Youth Ballet. We have what you want for the day or evening. Unique shops and fabulous restaurants with international flair dot our streets for your morning coffee and late-night gathering places. Please enjoy some quality time with us in Carlisle. And know you are always welcome here! Tana Emery M&T Bank President, Downtown Carlisle Association

hose with curious minds will be happy to hear that the Cumberland County Historical Society has a wonderful, free museum at its 21 N. Pitt Street location in Carlisle. This historical society got its start in 1874, beginning as more of a history club than the community feature we know it as today. In the early 1900s the historical society started showing artifacts, but its museum only opened in its current iteration in 2005. The museum was then renovated in early 2018 in order to draw more attention to the artifacts it showcases, reopening this past April. The historical society’s museum contains everything from jewelry made with human hair (a popular accessory during the mid 19th century) to a variety of miniatures, including a model of Carlisle in 1920. There are interactive exhibits for children, along with a timeline of local and national events. That timeline covers everything from the establishment of the first recorded European trading post in this area by James Letort around 1720, to the first annual Carlisle Car Show in 1974, and later the heightening of security that was seen after the tragic events of 9/11. Other exhibits are themed around immigration and settlement, agriculture and transportation, business and history, artisans, local military history, and the Carlisle Indian School. That school was founded in 1879 as the first off-reservation boarding school for Native Americans in the United States. It housed 8,000 to 9,000 students in the 39 years it was open, and formed an important part of Carlisle, not to mention national, history. Besides housing permanent exhibits, the museum does a changing exhibit every year. Past exhibits have included the local impact of the Civil War, the history of Pine Grove Furnace, and a display of tall case clocks. This year the exhibit was Trends & Threads:

Women, Family, and Society in 19th Century Samplers, although in November the museum will be replacing this with an exhibit called The War That Changed the World: Lasting Effects of WWI on Cumberland County. “The Cumberland County Historical Society is honored to preserve and share the history of the county through our robust collections.” said Rachael Knapp, curator of the museum. She continued, “By understanding the distinctive history of Cumberland County, we are able to build a collective identity in our community that fosters understanding, camaraderie, and appreciation.” Indeed, Carlisle, along with the Cumberland Valley at large, is full of unique history. Regardless of your connection to Carlisle, then, an hour or so spent wandering the halls of the Cumberland County Historical Society’s museum could provide some fascinating insights into the place so many of us call home. So consider swinging by.

Downtown Carlisle Association Makes Carlisle A Better Place

H

ow does a downtown get described as: cute, authentic, historical, vibrant, fun, cool? Main Street organizations across the country make it happen! The Borough of Carlisle, Dickinson College and other area leaders use the Downtown Carlisle Association (DCA), one of Pennsylvania’s first Main Street organizations, to set vitalization goals and then, work with the community to reach those goals. A National Main Street Structure implemented in Carlisle: the DCA is a multi-faceted organization that manages a four-point downtown revitalization plan: Promotion: Developing promotional & tourism events with structured branding; Design: Ensuring the downtown is groomed, clean, and attractive to customers; Economic Development: Attracting and retaining businesses through grants, loans, ease of government regulations and market research; and Organization: Maintaining and cultivating government, corporate and personal relationship to help the downtown reach community goals.

From promotional and tourism events, downtown flowers, clean-ups, streetlight banners, to store facades and logos, the DCA created a downtown where businesses and people want to invest time and money. Partnerships with community, government, and corporations, lead us in creating and maintaining a downtown environment that breeds individual optimism that leads to a welcoming community where people can live and thrive. Glenn White, Executive Director of the DCA stated “We are successful because this community wants to be successful. Carlisle is very proud, welcoming and makes marketing downtown very easy.” So be sure to watch our LoveCarlisle.com Facebook page and website to find out about downtown activities and businesses; but mostly to learn how you can make a difference, get involved, donate, volunteer, and engage in your downtown to make it better!
