Kicking off the festive season, The Cambridge Jazz Festival is back at the Museum of Zoology on November 21st. Visitors can enjoy great music in the atmospheric Whale Hall and wander the newly refurbished exhibits, all with a drink in-hand. The Cambridge Conservation Initiative will also be there to chat to attendees about their work. As November draws to a close, Kettle’s Yard is once again welcoming night owls for an after-hours view of their latest exhibition Richard Pousette-Dart: Beginnings, A Young Abstract Expressionist in New York. Does anything quite say Christmas like fossils? For the final Cam Lates event of the year, the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is throwing a bash to get you into the holiday spirit. Visitors will be treated to a live performance by local band The Accidentalists, have the opportunity to browse festively lit collections and chat with researchers who will be on-hand to answer any questions. But not all of the events will be happening under the cover of darkness, they are also offering up an exciting a new way to engage with the collections across the museums this winter. Every Saturday until 15th December teams will be traversing four of the museums to play the brand new code-cracking live-action game. Operation Survival, produced in partnership with Fire Hazard Games, is a timely, high-energy challenge about survival in a changing environment. Taking participants on a journey through collections, the game asks teams to use historical objects to explore and examine the ways humans have treated our natural world in the past as well as the technology that has helped us understand our environment, now and in the future. Grand Arcade Switch On At 4pm on Sunday 18th November, Grand Arcade will be switching on the Christmas decorations to bring the festive spirit to Cambridge. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jez Sallis will be there to help us switch on the lights. A host of choirs and musicians will be building up the festive spirit from midday. The Cambridge Theatre Company will be showing extracts from their new show Peter Pan as well as a performance from the Stagecoach Choir & Dance Group, with the ever-popular Rock Choir doing the final build up to 4pm. Stores will be open and stocked with Christmas gifts, with many serving mince pies and festive drinks. Our confetti canons have been given some extra pizazz this year, throwing glitter up to 12 metres into the air, covering the mall in stars.

I’m thrilled to be part of the Christmas Lights Switch On once again this year. It’s an honour to share the stage with some of Cambridgeshire’s most inspiring and talented people, at one of the biggest events in the city.

Vinyl Nightclub

! y rr e M e B & k n i r Eat , D Popping out for a bite to eat or a late-night cocktail, Cambridge has it all. During the festive period, Cambridge comes alive. With the ice skating on Parker’s Piece, why not start your evening there and see where the night takes you? If it’s a meal out you are looking for then you are very much spoilt for choice. From stand-up street food to fine-dining, Vietnamese broths to classic Italian fare, there’s something for everyone’s taste buds. Cambridge is blessed with not only all the high street chains you expect to find in large cities, but also a huge selection of fantastic independent bars and restaurants to give you that home cooked, local product quality you come to expect. The recently opened Parker’s Tavern headed by celebrity chef Tristan Welch, has been long anticipated and is well worth the wait. With traditional British food in beautiful surroundings, what’s not to love. There are several cocktail bars in the city ready to whip you up a festive tipple! Head to La Raza in Rose Crescent, Novi on Regent Street or 12A on Market Square to name but a few. You could also work your way through the 103 gins on offer at d’Arry’s Liquor Loft if you are feeling brave enough!

Not only is Cambridge a fantastic place to shop and eat, it’s a great place to enjoy a night out. With a mix of independent bars, larger chains and nightclubs, the choice is endless. For those that wish to stay out and enjoy the late-night venues, then head to Lola Lo’s which is a tiki themed nightclub. Alternatively, you could head to Ballare which has been a fixture in the Cambridge nightlife for many years and is very popular with students during the week. New this Autumn, Vinyl Cambridge opened in September, bringing disco entertainment and a retro experience to the city. It features numerous glitter balls and an illuminated dance floor, playing pop classics and guilty pleasures. There are seven prebookable VIP booths, four with their own private flashing dance floor! The venue is offering a Christmas menu package for a fun festive night out. Keeping people safe is paramount in Cambridge. The Cambridge Street Pastors volunteer to help those that might be in difficulty by providing practical help and a listening ear. Over every weekend in December and on selected other nights during the festive season there will be Taxi Marshalls based at the St Andrews Street Taxi Rank to help people get home safely and ensure Cambridge remains a safe place to go out and have fun!

A Perfect Day...

Loving Christmas | Competition

WITH TRISTAN WELC

H

Christmas is such a special time of year. Time to unwind, enjoy spending quality time with your nearest and dearest. We caught up with Tristan Welch, Chef Director at Parker’s Tavern to ask him what makes a perfect Christmas in the Welch family home Christmas is absolutely one of my favourite times of year – surrounded by family, friends and loved ones – I am a proud father to 3 young boys and love everyone feeling festive and merry, it is a delight to behold! Food is the heart of a happy home at Christmas, and we do enjoy entertaining in the Welch household, and my passion for local ingredients truly shines

though at this time of year, with my Grantchester cure smoked trout to start, and my Norfolk Turkey with beetroot and apple stuffing as the main event! Christmas Pudding is a firm favourite with me, but I do understand it doesn’t tickle everyone’s taste buds – however, I am certain everyone will find a Christmas pudding trifle to be an absolute pleasure. We’re very much in the Christmas spirit at Parker’s Tavern, and our festive themed menus are sure to feature something that will bring joy to even Ebenezer Scrooge himself! I look forward to welcoming you all over this wonderful time of year and wish you all a Merry Christmas.
