Josephine Mother Wade has been a charismatic and influential leader in Chicago's urban neighborhoods for many years.

She founded We Women Empowered, an organization that mentors children from low-income communities.

At We Women Empowered, community involvement is deeply ingrained in our culture. We have strong connections in diverse Chicago communities and advocate for practical, fair, and sustainable solutions to enhance quality of life for all.

FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT

HERSTORY

Our founder, Josephine “Mother” Wade, from Forest City, Arkansas, first dreamed of a life without poverty at 15. Gifted in cooking and party planning, she believed entrepreneurship was the way to achieve her dream. After moving to Chicago in 1958, she opened Captain’s Hard-times Dining in 1989 and founded We Women Empowered to mentor children from low-income communities. In 2008, President George W. Bush honored Wade with the Distinguished Medal of Honor for Outstanding Service and over the past decade has received mulitple local and national awards. Today, she continues to mentor young people pursuing entrepreneurship.
