Dear Collegiate Community,

As we reflect on the 2023-24 school year, Louisville Collegiate School has much to celebrate and be grateful for. We began the year with nearly 800 students—the largest enrollment in our school’s history—supported by a dedicated team of 150 faculty and staff members. Each faculty member at Collegiate, with their dedication and commitment, plays an essential role in shaping the success of our students.

Our students excelled in the classrooms, competed in countless athletic competitions, and performed numerous artistic performances. Two robotics teams qualified for the world championship competition, Titans soccer won the All ‘A’ State Championship, and students won several artistic and academic awards. It was a year filled with joy, celebrations, and gratitude.

In November, our Parents Association invited students to express their gratitude for Collegiate, resulting in a beautiful installation outside the Thornton Dining Commons. The leaves on this display, adorned with messages of thanks, highlighted the things our students hold dear— teachers, friends, lunches, the playground, and the support they receive at Collegiate. These expressions reflect our commitment to fostering a community where every student feels they belong.

As you read through the 2023-24 Impact Report, you will witness firsthand the profound impact of your generosity on the Collegiate community and our efforts to be inclusive and sustainable. Your contributions to the Annual Fund, Community Partners, and events directly sustain our operating budget, enriching the Collegiate experience for every student and ensuring the continued excellence of our programs.

We are grateful for your continued support of this extraordinary school—today and always.

With appreciation,

2023-2024 GIVING

We are thrilled to share the incredible impact your generosity had on Louisville Collegiate School and our community during the 2023-24 school year. As volunteers and donors, an incredible number of our community members dedicate time, talent, and financial support to Collegiate. Together, our supporters ensure that our students become lifelong learners with extraordinary character and global citizenship, from the first day of school to decades beyond a student’s graduation.

“The Gap” in 2023-24

Every student at Louisville Collegiate School benefits from a strong Annual Fund, because each year, the school’s cost to educate every student is higher than the tuition. The difference between cost and tuition is what independent schools refer to as “the Gap.” In the 2023-24 school year, “the Gap” at Collegiate was more than $2,300 per student.

15% “The Gap”

In the 2023-24 school year, the Collegiate community came together to bridge the Gap through:

The Annual Fund = $636,712

Events and Community Partnerships =$242,679

Endowment Draw of 5% =$475,894

Annual Fund Donors

Leadership Giving to the 2023-24 Annual Fund

Every gift to the Annual Fund, regardless of size, provides vital support to the operating budget and helps to close “the Gap.” Each gift supports the people in our community and programs offered as well as essentials and extras that make Collegiate an unparalleled educational experience. Each gift has a tangible impact in our school community and in the donor lists, we provide examples of what each level of giving makes possible. We are deeply grateful for every donation. Memorial and honorary gifts are acknowledged on page 13.

FOUNDERS

($25,000+)

Gifts of $25,000 have a transformative effect on our operating budget. Our faculty and staff and exceptional programming are both our greatest assets and largest expenses. Each year, nearly 40% of our students benefit from financial aid, and requests continue to grow. A gift of this size makes our highquality education accessible to more students, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Doug and Ann Grissom

Gill and Augusta Holland Lindy B. Street

HEAD OF SCHOOL ($15,000+)

A gift of $15,000 allows us to stay at the forefront of educational excellence. This level of support enables significant upgrades in technology across classrooms, labs, and the Makery. Important upgrades in 2023-24 included refurbishing ActivPanels, projectors, and chromebooks, the addition of camera-enabled meeting equipment for virtual and hybrid meetings, and printing programs to expand student and teacher access to printing.

Campbell Brown and Sarah Barker

Chenault Conway

Tom and Noreen Mason

Jean Wyer

1915 SOCIETY ($10,000+)

Gifts of $10,000 make it possible for the school to stage productions and community events that require lights, sound, and streaming. In the 2023-24 school year, these included: “Adventures Through Time;” “Mamma Mia;” “Newsies, Jr.;” “Walk Two Moons;” Upper School Theatre Showcase; Winterlude; Winter and Spring Strings Concerts; Lower School Visual Art Show; and Middle and Upper School Rock Band. All of these experiences enrich our students’ cultural and artistic education.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE ($2,500+)

Each contribution at this level helps to bridge “the Gap” between tuition and cost for each student. “The Gap” exists because we are committed to small class sizes and the advisor program that provides each student with the resources and support to achieve their academic goals.

LCS Alumni Association Celebrates an Outstanding Year of Engagement

The 2023-24 Alumni Association Board consisted of 28 dedicated members from a wide range of class years. Every board member proudly supported the Annual Fund, helping lead the Alumni Community to surpass our goal of 17% participation.

Throughout the year, the Alumni Association hosted several events, including the Alumni Awards Dinner and Ceremony, our first Jingle and Mingle Holiday Reception, a gathering in Washington, D.C., fall Alumni Games, the annual Donuts and Dona Nobis, the William M. Street ’09H Leadership Ceremony, the Senior Class Alumni Induction Luncheon, the Alumni Connection photo, several class reunions, and more.

As part of the Alumni Co-Edge class for the class or 2024, the Alumni Association conducted four Alumni Panels where graduates shared their experiences and wisdom. These sessions were a blend of in-person and virtual formats, offering students the chance to gain valuable advice and ask questions about life beyond Collegiate. Alumni shared their experiences, emphasized the importance of Collegiate connections, and offered guidance to seniors on preparing for their next chapter.

The Alumni Association manages The Glenmary Shop, which sells school spirit items and apparel. This revenue is given back to Collegiate through yearly donations of products and sponsorships to events, graduation gifts for our seniors, memorabilia for students, and offers additional ways to foster relationships between alumni and Louisville Collegiate School. Endowment

Like most independent schools and universities, Louisville Collegiate School has an established permanent endowment that supports the school year after year, sustaining vital and unique elements of the Collegiate experience. Each donation to the endowment has been invested. And each year, as the endowment grows, Collegiate is able to factor a prudent portion of the earnings into the operating budget.

As of June 30, 2024, Collegiate’s endowed funds total $10.39M. While this is small for a school that has been in existence for more than 100 years, we are extremely grateful to the individuals and families who helped grow the endowment by establishing named endowment funds. Each year, the endowment draw has a positive impact on our general budget. The draw for the 2024-25 school year is $475,894.

INCOME

Named for the school’s founders, Virginia Perrin Speed (18791968) and her husband, William Shallcross Speed (1873-1955), the Speed Society consists of individuals and families who make a legacy gift to Collegiate’s planned giving program.

Joining the Speed Society

Planned gifts can provide a variety of benefits which may include life income, continued use of gift property, an avoidance of capital gains tax and immediate tax deduction.

Contrary to popular misconception, nearly everyone can make a planned gift to Louisville Collegiate School at some level and a multitude of simple options exist:

Bequest

Making a bequest to Louisville Collegiate School can be easily accomplished by including a few sentences in a will or Revocable Living Trust. Bequests are flexible and can be adjusted-perhaps for this reason, 75% of planned gifts come in this form! Legal and financial advisors will know how best to structure a will to meet a donor’s financial needs.

Life Insurance

Whole-life insurance policies represent a valuable opportunity to make a major gift that benefits both the donor and the school in many ways. It is incredibly simple to name the School as a beneficiary on your policy.

Retirement Plans

Naming Collegiate as the beneficiary of a retirement plan (IRA, 401K, or 403B) is an easy and tax efficient way to leave a legacy gift. Given current tax laws, beneficiaries other than spouses may be taxed on the income, but charities such as Louisville Collegiate School are able to receive the full amount of remaining retirement assets.

Other Planned Gifts

A properly chosen planned gift vehicle may offer significant tax benefits and retirement income to the donor, while imparting a much larger gift than imagined.
