GAME NOTES
HEN HOUSE OF HORRORS: The Toledo Mud Hens have been the Bats' nemesis for the past few seasons. In their last four series dating back to 2024, the Bats have struggled, going 4-20 against their IL West Division rivals. That streak includes 17 straight losses to the Mud Hens from 7/23/24-8/10/25. The Bats avoided a third straight series sweep to the Mud Hens on 8/10/25, winning the series finale 9-6 to end a 406-day streak of defeats to Toledo. In their final road series of the 2025 season, the Bats earned a split of the six-game series with the Mud Hens from 9/9-14 at Fifth Third Field. Last season, the Mud Hens won the season series 13-4 after taking it 10-7 in 2024.
NO TIME TO WAIT: Louisville's offense has come out swinging in the first inning this season, leading the International League with 22 runs scored while posting a .333 batting average in the opening frame. The Bats have tallied 21 hits, including eight extra-base hits and four home runs, and have reached base at a .436 clip through their first 15 games. Louisville is one of just four teams to have a .300 or better batting average in the first.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Bats started their road schedule on a high note last week, winning four of six over the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field, their first series win at Indianapolis since 2022. It also marked Louisville’s first road series win of the season, a feat which the 2025 Bats did not accomplish until taking four of six at Gwinnett from 8/12-17, their 11th road series of the season. The road has not been kind to the Bats in recent years, as they went 30-46 away from Louisville Slugger Field last season and a league-worst 28-48 on the road in 2024.
RELIEVING THE PRESSURE: The Bats' bullpen has been a strength early in the 2026 season, combining for a 2.80 ERA through the first 15 games, the lowest mark in the International League, while limiting opponents to a .229 batting average. Bats veterans Lyon Richardson and Tejay Antone have gotten off to an outstanding start in the season, with neither player giving up an earned run so far throughout their outings. Antone continued his strong streak on Saturday night, tossing a scoreless bottom of the ninth to finish the win and earn the save, his first with the Bats since 8/15/21 vs. Nashville.
CONSISTENCY FOR JJ: After going hitless in his Bats debut on 3/27, JJ Bleday has firmly inserted himself as a consistent piece in Louisville's lineup to start the season, reaching base in all 13 games he's played since the hitless debut. A new signing for the Reds organization in 2026, Bleday's five doubles lead the Bats and are tied for fourth in the International League. On 4/2, he turned in a spectacular performance for the Bats, recording three doubles against Iowa. Bleday currently holds the longest hitting streak of the season for the Bats at eight games, which ended in Louisville's 5-0 loss to the Indians on 4/8.
RODRIGUEZ KEEPS REACHING: Since the beginning of the 2026 season, Hector Rodriguez is one of only two players to reach base in all 15 games of the International League, joined by Jim Jarvis (Gwinnett). Rodriguez has shown a keen eye at the plate, hitting .259 with 14 hits and 15 walks. So far, his walks rank tied for second across the International League. Rodriguez displayed plenty of discipline in the Bats' series finale against the Indians, where he went 1-2 with three walks on 4/12.
WBC INFIELD: Two Bats infielders competed internationally in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, as Edwin Arroyo appeared in two games for Puerto Rico, which advanced to the quarterfinals, while Ivan Johnson scored two runs while playing in all four games for Great Britain, who did not advance out of group play.
FORMER HIGH-ROUND TALENT: The Bats roster features five former first-round picks, including outfielder JJ Bleday (4th overall by Miami in 2019), southpaw Andrew Chafin (43rd overall by Arizona in 2011), infielder Michael Toglia (23rd overall by Colorado in 2019), infielder Michael Chavis (26th overall by Boston in 2014), and right-hander Chase Petty (26th overall by Minnesota in 2021). Bleday (Vanderbilt) and Chafin (Kent State) were selected out of college while Chavis, Toglia and Petty were drafted straight out of high school. All five have since made their way to the big leagues, and are now teammates for the first time here in Louisville. In addition, the Bats have six former second-round picks on their current roster. Lyon Richardson (2018) was selected by the Reds, while Edwin Arroyo (2021), Will Banfield (2018), Kyle Nicolas (2020), and Hagen Danner (2017) were picked by other Major League clubs.
PROSPECT RANKINGS: Louisville's current 28-man active roster features four of the Reds' Top 30 prospects according to MLB.com. They are outfielder Hector Rodriguez (No. 6), shortstop Edwin Arroyo (No. 8) and right-handed pitchers Chase Petty (No. 9) and Zach Maxwell (No. 19).
