Trust Me

hat comes to mind when you hear those words? Is it a close friend that is reassuring you when you’ve asked them for advice? Or is it a sleazy salesman or a politician that’s just finished giving you their sales pitch and is now waiting on your response? I’m sure each of us has a different mental picture when we think about trust. The word “trust” can certainly elicit a range of feelings, some really positive and some definitely negative. How about mistrust or distrust? A whole different range of emotions. I bring up the issue of trust because, as dentists, I feel it’s one of the core principles that is integral to our success, no matter your practice model. Let’s face it, when a patient sits down in our chair and opens their mouth for us to do anything, it takes an awful lot of trust on their part. When you factor in an injection and any number of invasive dental procedures that you can conjure up, it’s not surprising that a fair number of our patients have some form of dental anxiety. Yet, there they are, day after day, coming back to see us and trusting us with their dental care. How many times have you presented treatment to a patient and their response was something along the lines of “Whatever you say, Doc - I trust you?” I always take a minute to thank them for that. Trust is something that is earned over time, sometimes it takes 2 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
Trust is something that is earned over time, sometimes it takes minutes and sometimes years. minutes and sometimes years. And sometimes you may never feel like you’ve earned it from some patients. Whatever the case, once you’ve got it, it’s something to treasure and appreciate and makes the whole experience of doing dentistry that much better. For me, communication seems to be a big key in helping to establish that connection. It starts with their first appointment and getting to know them. It’s my job to address any concerns, fears, or
less-than-ideal experiences they may have had previously with a dental visit. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that some patients distrust of some dental professionals might be justified. If we can get to the bottom of that, then we can usually get off to a good start in what may become a years-long doctor-patient relationship. Trust from our patients has to be earned. Treating and diagnosing them like they are a family member instead of just the next body or procedure in your chair is a good start to that goal. The next time you have a patient that says “I trust you” with their words or maybe just their actions, take a second to appreciate that. Acknowledge it, maybe with your actions but also maybe with your words. And if you do, you may just add another member to your mutual admiration society. Trust me!

ince writing my last article in the MB line angle. As we’ve gained more September, most of my time has clinic time (and will continue to in the been spent working toward meeting Spring when we are in clinic 4 days a all my clinical requirements and studying week), it’s been fun and rewarding to see for my Integrated National Board Dental and do new things. Examination (INBDE). First, a word about the boards. The INBDE replaced the old Part I and II Dental Board Exams in 2020. It’s 1½ days of testing consisting of 300 didactic questions and 130 case set questions. We can sign up to take it during our 3rd or 4th year (for a nominal fee of $880) and it’s given at a Prometric testing center on a day of our choosing. For several months leading up to it, it seemed like all of my waking hours outside of school were used for studying for the exam. Thankfully, there’s a coffee shop and the Old Metairie public library within walking distance of our apartment, so I had a few places close by that I could escape to for studying. I am happy to report that I got my results right before this issue of the Journal went to print and I passed! Another My first extraction! milestone achieved. While at school, I’ve done my best trying to schedule patients to fill I’ve been doing oral diagnosis all of my available clinic time. I’ve been appointments left and right to make sure mostly successful. As a result, I’ve had I have enough patients to meet all of some great clinical experiences so far this my requirements for this semester in all semester! At the beginning of September, the different specialties. As a result, I’ve I was able to extract my first two teeth. seen all kinds of patients and all of their Both were perio-involved which made the unique dental work needs that come in extractions pretty easy. I was thankful to the clinic with them. Be it 11-unit bridges have a first extraction case where I could on 3 abutment teeth, supposed “fullget some much-needed experience prior coverage” crowns that don’t cover the to having more involved cases down the entire surface of the tooth, or something line. Additionally, I’ve been busy working as simple as severe tetracycline staining, towards my operative requirements with I’ve already had a wide array of cases some very large, complicated DO Class and I anticipate even more interesting II’s and III’s that wrapped all the way to ones in the near future. Here’s one

INBDE: Done!
example: The 11-unit bridge I mentioned before is on a patient I’ve been seeing since she first came to the school. She was initially diagnosed with caries and moderate periodontal disease. Due to both reasons, her remaining upper teeth had to be removed, which led to the opportunity to section and surgically extract them. I assisted with an alveoplasty and tied my first suture. This patient will eventually be getting an upper complete denture and lower RPD. What I’ve really learned the most has been that each of the patients that I have seen has their own unique story and it's been so much fun getting to hear about their experiences in life and learn from them, whether they are a firstgeneration immigrant to the United States, a former college football player, school teacher, or retired member of the military. When I haven't been busy with school and studying, I’ve still made sure to enjoy living in New Orleans. My wife Salena and I have taken advantage of a few concerts that have come to the city, most recently seeing Vampire Weekend perform at the Saenger Theatre. While many of my devoted readers may not know who that is, they are a Grammy award-winning alternative pop band, and boy, do they put on a great show! After taking my board exam shortly before Thanksgiving, I’ve been able to get back to doing some of the things that Salena and I enjoy, such as hammocking and reading in City Park, eating out at restaurants around town, making homemade pizzas, and even going to the Louisiana Renaissance Faire in Hammond this past weekend. Now, we’re looking forward to the holidays and what lies ahead in the Spring!

The Power of Focus: Safeguarding the Future of Dentistry Through Organized Commitment By Dr. Sean Owens President, LDA
n an era marked by rapid change, expanding regulatory pressures, and increasing corporate influence, the dental profession faces challenges that require more than skill — they require focus. Proverbs 4:25 offers a timeless reminder: “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” While spoken long before the modern practice of dentistry, this guidance captures exactly what our profession needs today. Organized dentistry exists to help us keep that collective gaze steady — aligned on advocacy, professional autonomy, clinical integrity, and the long-term health of the field. When individual dentists remain engaged, informed, and committed, our profession advances with clarity rather than drifting under the weight of distraction. Focus, in this context, is not merely attention; it is deliberate, disciplined engagement. Bruce Lee
Organized dentistry exists to help us keep [our] collective gaze steady — aligned on advocacy, professional autonomy, clinical integrity, and the longterm health of the field. once said, “The successful warrior is the average man, with laserlike focus.” Organized dentistry embodies that philosophy. Legislative advocacy, insurance reform, workforce development, mentorship pipelines, community oral-health initiatives, and continuing education do not happen by chance. They emerge because dentists choose to lend their voices and their time to
the organizations that safeguard our future. When we direct our focus toward strengthening these institutions, we protect the autonomy, ethical standards, and excellence that defines dentistry in Louisiana. The demands on today’s practitioners are greater than ever, and the risks of losing focus are real. Yet the resilience of our profession has always come from unity—a community of dentists committed not just to today’s challenges, but to tomorrow’s vision. The Louisiana Dental Association is strongest when its members actively participate in shaping the road ahead. By cultivating focused leadership in our practices, in our communities, and within organized dentistry, we ensure that future generations inherit a profession defined by stability, foresight, and purpose. Our focus today is the foundation of dentistry’s tomorrow.
The LDA meets with some pretty influential people to advocate for dentists and their patients! You can find LDA members and LDA staff representing the association at a variety of government events. As always, our focus is on making connections, educating our lawmakers on issues that matter to dentists, and promoting policies that improve public oral health. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Leading with Purpose from the National Level to Improve Our State Lobby By Annette Droddy Executive Director, LDA
A
n important part of the Tripartite is our ability to protect dentistry from the federal, state and local levels. Without organized dentistry, no one dentist or office could accomplish what we are able to do together. Many of you may be interested in two initiatives that the ADA has been lobbying for from the national level that can help the states with their own insurance legislative priorities.
Virtual Credit Card Opt-In Provision The National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) voted to approve amendments to the 2020 Transparency in Dental Benefits Contracting Model Act, marking a key development for state dental societies that have advocated for changes to virtual credit card payment provisions. At NCOIL’s Health Committee meeting, members adopted language that shifts virtual credit cardrelated payments from an “opt-out” to an “opt-in” system. Under the revised model, dental plans must obtain a dentist’s permission before issuing any payment method that carries associated fees, such as a virtual credit card. After NCOIL voted in the original model act several years ago, the LDA passed the bill in Louisiana. With the updated amendments to the model act, dentists opt in if they want to utilize the virtual credit card system. Many dentists prefer NOT to use the virtual credit card as they are charged additional fees on what are 6 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
already reduced, contracted rates. Our LDA Council on Government Affairs has voted to make this one of our 2026 legislative priorities.
WAIVER Act The ADA's lobbying team recently met with our own Sen. John Kennedy to discuss his support of the proposed WAIVER (Waiving Applicable Interference for Viable ERISA Reform) Act. We are currently seeking bill introduction in both the House and the Senate, and Sen. Kennedy's support will be critical. The WAIVER Act provides a clear mechanism that states can utilize to properly regulate coverage for the benefit of their constituents. Nationally, 46% of people with dental coverage receive their benefits through self-funded plans, and too many of these plans invoke ERISA preemptions to avoid complying with state consumer protection laws.
IF PASSED, states would be allowed to apply for waivers of ERISA preemption for specific laws. We believe that our state would be empowered to enforce important patient protections, which would promote transparency, accountability, and quality care for all Louisiana citizens. Louisianians work hard and purchase insurance plans that they think will be regulated through state law, only to have the plan invoke ERISA preemptions avoiding quality, consumer-based laws that are there for their protections. The Louisiana Insurance Code includes laws governing patient protection and provider fairness that set a standard which all Louisianians should benefit from. Our leaders are our members, and they lead with purpose. It is the strength of our three levels of membership that make the dental lobby a strong force to promote, advocate, and protect the dental profession.

Letter of Endorsement: Sharps Medical Waste Services By Dr. William Hadlock President, Louisiana Dental Services, Inc.
s President of Louisiana Dental Services (LDS), I am pleased to affirm our endorsement of Sharps Medical Waste Services (MWS) for regulated medical waste disposal for Louisiana dentists. Since its inception, the LDS has sought solutions that align with the realities of dental practice: systems that are compliant, practical, and reliable without adding unnecessary complexity. That need led to our original endorsement of Medical Waste Management in 2014. Following the acquisition of that organization into Sharps MWS, the LDS conducted a careful review to ensure continuity and value for our members. That review confirmed Sharps Medical Waste Services as the right organization to carry this endorsement forward. Sharps MWS is uniquely positioned to serve the dental community. The company pioneered the mailback disposal system, originally designed by a dentist to address safe amalgam disposal. Over time, Sharps has refined that innovation into a proven, compliant platform supporting multiple waste streams while remaining well-suited to dental environments. With over thirty years of service to communities like ours, Sharps MWS demonstrates a practical understanding of the operational needs of dental practices.
8 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
This endorsement provides LDA members with access to medical waste services that prioritize safety, regulatory alignment, and operational efficiency. It reflects our continued commitment to supporting dentists with companies who understand the profession and uphold the standards our members expect.

LOUISIANA STATE BOARD OF DENTISTRY
The Significance of Sterilizer Monitoring By Dr. Jeetendra Patel President, Louisiana State Board of Dentistry
S
terilization in dentistry is paramount for preventing the transmission of diseases by eliminating all microorganisms from instruments that come into contact with blood, saliva, or other bodily fluids. Each and every sterilizer utilized in a dental practice shall be monitored in accordance with the recommendations of the Federal Centers for Disease Control, including those recommendations designated as strongly recommended and required. A written log of the monitoring shall be produced and maintained by the dentist. The log should include the date of the test, the method of the monitoring, the manufacturer and type of the monitoring system, as well as the name of the individual performing the monitoring. The written log and all records of sterilizer monitoring shall be maintained for a period of two years from the date of the last test. The records of sterilizer monitoring shall include any and all documentation for the purchase of testing materials or kits and reports of each test conducted. The board may request such documentation from licensees selected at random. Unannounced inspections of dental offices may be conducted when bona fide complaints have been received regarding non-adherence to Federal Centers for Disease Control guidelines or other issues involving sanitation. A few reminders: 1. Office inspections are continuing statewide, so be vigilant. 2. All nonrestricted licenses (Dentists and Hygienists) shall be renewed biennially and will expire on December 31 of each calendar year of the renewal period. 3. Dentists must complete 30 hours of continuing education (C.E.) every two years, while dental hygienists must complete 20 hours. All renewing licensees must report their C.E. hours to the state through C.E. Broker by December 31st. As swiftly as it commenced, the year 2025 must come to an end. I extend my sincere gratitude to my esteemed fellow board members and the dedicated staff of the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry for their invaluable contributions in safeguarding the public by regulating
the professions of dentistry and dental hygiene within Louisiana. It has been an immense honor to serve as LSBD president. The effective functioning of the board relies on the collective efforts of its members and staff. Regrettably, complaints will persist as dental care remains an integral component of our daily lives. I extend my warmest holiday wishes to all of you.

LSUHSC SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
Celebrating Legacy and Building the Future By John R. Gallo, III, DDS, MS Dean and Professor, LSUHSC School of Dentistry
A
s 2025 ends, the LSU School of Dentistry stands at a meaningful crossroads—celebrating the achievements of its alumni, supporting the next generation of dental professionals, and preparing for a transformative new chapter in its physical campus. From the energy of Alumni Day to the announcement of major building renovations beginning in Spring 2026, the school continues to honor its legacy while investing boldly in its future. These moments not only highlight the strength of the LSU dental community, but also invite reflection, reconnection, and renewed support as we look ahead to the opportunities of the coming year.
Alumni Day 2025: A Day of Learning and Connection Held on September 26, Alumni Day brought together graduates, faculty, students, and industry partners for a full day of continuing education and community. The featured C.E. course: “Responsible Dentistry: Advanced Materials and Techniques for the Modern Dental Team,” was led by nationally recognized speaker Dr. Troy Schmedding, who shared evidence-based strategies for restorative care and team collaboration. The day also included breakfast, vendor exhibits, and an evening reception where alumni reconnected with classmates and faculty. Special honors were given to Dr. Henry Gremillion, posthumously awarded the 2025 Distinguished Alumnus Award, and Dr. Toby Cheramie, named the 2025 Alumnus of the Year.
White Coat Ceremony: Welcoming the Next Generation Also in September, the school hosted its annual White Coat Ceremony, a tradition that marks a significant milestone for incoming students across all dental programs. Surrounded by faculty, family,
14 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
and peers, students received their white coats—a symbol of professionalism, responsibility, and their commitment to the field of oral health. While the ceremony is often associated with the start of clinical training, at LSU it also celebrates the broader journey of students entering dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology. It serves as a moment of reflection and inspiration, reminding students of the values that will guide them—altruism, equity, integrity, and empathy.
Student Leadership on the National Stage: SPEA Annual Session Four of our third-year dentistry students attended this year’s Student Professionalism and Ethics Association in Dentistry (SPEA) Annual Session, where Lauren Schafer and Emily Eberts were named to the SPEA National Board as Chief Information Officer and Regent, respectively. These roles will allow them not only to help expand SPEA nationally, but also to work closely with local chapters to provide guidance. Their appointments reflect the leadership and professionalism fostered at LSUSD and highlight the school’s growing influence in shaping the future of dental ethics and student engagement across the country.
Summer Enrichment Program: Building a Pipeline for Future Providers One of the school’s most impactful initiatives is the Summer Enrichment Program, which provides hands-on experiences and mentorship for college students from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in dentistry. With support from community partners, including the Louisiana Dental Center in partnership with the New Orleans Saints, the program helps
participants build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and prepare competitive dental school applications. Many current students credit the program with inspiring their journey into oral health care.
Spring Renovations: A Vision for Modern Dental Education In spring 2026, LSUSD will begin a major campus modernization project designed to enhance clinical care, student experience, and infrastructure. Key upgrades will include: • Enhanced clinical support areas for improved patient care • Technology-rich classrooms • Improved accessibility and infrastructure This initiative reflects the commitment of LSU Health New Orleans Chancellor Steve Nelson, MD and the Louisiana Legislature, along with alumni and donors, to training exceptional oral health providers in a space that fosters excellence, innovation, and community.
Looking Ahead: Support the School’s Mission As we celebrate our alumni and welcome new students, we also look ahead to a future shaped by innovation. The LSU School of Dentistry remains committed to advancing oral health education and serving the people of Louisiana. We invite our alumni, partners, and friends to support the school’s mission— whether through mentorship, advocacy, or philanthropic giving. Your support helps us invest in students, strengthen clinical care, and build a campus that reflects the excellence of our community. WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Building Value in Your Dental Practice By Chad Olivier CEO®,CEPA, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™
R
unning a successful dental practice requires strong acumen. Building a successful business should continually return to the concept of adding value, which takes intentional action and consistent hard work. It’s about creating a business structure that can thrive, adapt, and grow. This process also involves keeping the business’ ability to continue to do all those things with or without you constantly at the helm. Building long-term value is a business goal, and there are certain traits successful businesses have that add value, and you can strengthen them in your own practice. 1. Next-Level Management If your goal is to protect your business’s future and preserve your legacy, you’ll eventually need to give more control to the next generation of leaders. At first glance, it may feel counterintuitive to give up control to stay in control, but that’s what sustainable success often looks like. Next-level management means having the right people in place who can operate and grow the business independently. These leaders might come from outside your organization, bringing experience scaling larger companies. They may also be in-house, homegrown talents who already understand your culture and values. The key is to ensure your business can run efficiently and seamlessly without your day-to-day involvement. Buyers, investors, and successors all want to see that your company can 16 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
thrive beyond the founder. When you’ve built a management team that delivers that kind of continuity, you’ve increased both your company’s value and your personal freedom. 2. Systems that Sustain Cash Flow A truly valuable business runs on systems, not personality. Documented processes, including everything from how you greet patients to how you manage finances, prove your company can generate consistent, repeatable results. Oftentimes, small practice owners are the entire business, being the rainmaker, the problem-solver, the person that does everything. However, if success relies on one person alone, the business’ value is limited. Building clear, written systems turns your expertise into a framework others can follow. This helps create stability, scalability, and confidence for whoever leads next. Building these systems takes time and expertise, and a financial advisor can be an instrumental help in this regard, to assist business owners identify what works, maintain it over time, and align it with broader financial and exit strategies. 3. A Diverse and Loyal Patient Base Building a valued, loyal, consistent, and diverse patient base can help give your practice flexibility and grow sustainability over time. This helps your practice become resilient and transferable. At this point, it is important to consider who
your patients are and what they value. Aligning these considerations helps lead to continual growth and value.1 This alignment can result from seeking feedback from patients and being able to solve their problems and meet their needs.2 Looking to the Future – A Plan
Developing next-level leaders, documenting systems, and building a broad patient base are three steps to gaining traits of a valuable dental practice. Olivier Group has certified planning professionals who can help you strengthen your business and plan for what’s next. We can work with you to evaluate your business’ value drivers, identify areas of opportunity, and design a strategy that helps protect what you’ve built to be a continued legacy for years to come. Dr. Edward Jeffrey "Jeff" Hooton LDA PAST-PRESIDENT, 2012-2013
EDWARD JEFFREY HOOTON, known to most as Jeff, passed away on September 24, 2025, while on a salmon fishing trip in Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park. He was 77. Jeff graduated from Northeast Louisiana University and went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1984. A respected leader in his profession, he served as president of the Northeast Louisiana Dental Association (NELDA) in 1992, later serving on the Louisiana Dental Services board, the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) Council of Government Affairs, and the LDA Board of Directors, where he served as LDA President from 2012 to 2013. He represented Louisiana at the American Dental Association House of Delegates and was recognized with the NELDA Member of the Year award in 1997, as well as the LDA Distinguished Service Award in 2014 and the LDA Humanitarian Award in 2016. He also served as state chair of the Louisiana Dental Political Action Committee.
Before his career in dentistry, Jeff served his country in the United States Army, completing two tours in Vietnam and receiving the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the Valorous Unit Award. He later combined his professional skills and heart for service as founder of the Trinity Episcopal Church Central America Dental Team, serving on mission trips in Honduras and Nicaragua for more than two decades. At his dental practice in Monroe, Jeff cared deeply for both his employees and patients. To him, they were more than colleagues and clients; they were family. He built a workplace grounded in loyalty, laughter, and respect, and he was especially proud of the many long-tenured staff who stood by his side for decades. Jeff cherished the trust his patients placed in him, often treating multiple generations within the same family. To show his gratitude, he welcomed his team and their families into his home each year for Christmas celebrations, a tradition that reflected his belief that dentistry was not just a profession, but a community built on relationships.

COUNCIL ON DENTAL EDUCATION
Sip & C.E.: How Years of Planning Led to One Fabulous Trip to Wine Country By Jeanne McFall Director of Conference Services, LDA
H
ave you ever wondered what it’s like to create, plan, and execute a brand-new continuing education event? It’s nerve racking! Much like starting a new business, there are countless details to consider and plenty of kinks to work out before you can invite folks in. After years of receiving requests for a C.E. trip to wine country, the LDA Board of Directors voted to make it happen. After another year of planning, we headed to Napa Valley with 65 dental professionals, who were ready to learn, taste, and relax! Each morning began with three hours of engaging continuing education, followed by afternoons filled with exploration. Attendees enjoyed beautiful wineries, fine dining, hot air balloon rides, and even day trips to San Francisco. To say this trip was a success would be an understatement. The continuing education was top-notch, the attendees were more relaxed than ever, and the change of scenery offered a refreshing reset for everyone. Finding balance between work and life can be challenging, but with an event like this, you really can have it all! If you didn’t make it this year, we hope to see you in Sonoma next year! Join us September 1618, 2026, as we take our next Sip & C.E. adventure to Sonoma Valley, where we’ll be staying at the beautiful Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. It promises to be another unforgettable experience. Our room block is open, so reserve your room now because our hotel room block WILL fill up!

Kenny’s Hope and Oral Health Restored
A Veteran’s Journey to Hope and Health Through Donated Care Now more than ever, vulnerable individuals across the nation are facing barriers to comprehensive dental care and need help – especially our veterans. This need was critical for Kenny, 64, a Navy veteran who lives alone in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Throughout his life, Kenny struggled with various health problems, which eventually led to severe oral health issues. He was born with rare genetic disorders that weaken his teeth and make them brittle. The damage from these disorders made it extremely difficult for him to swallow, and he was at serious risk of dental infection. His primary care physician, recognizing the severity of his situation, urged him to seek dental treatment, but Kenny could not afford the care. Although he receives medical benefits through the VA, he is not eligible for dental coverage and his Social Security retirement benefits are directed to his daily living expenses. Kenny was losing hope; his self-esteem and confidence began to suffer as the urgent dental care he needed seemed impossible to attain.
Don’t wait! Volunteer with Dental Lifeline Network to change lives today.
22 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
Kenny reached out to the VA and was referred to Dental Lifeline Network • Louisiana’s Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. Longtime DDS Volunteer, Dr. Maria Burmaster, treated Kenny through the program, performing multiple extractions and working with Megloo Dental Laboratory to donate full upper and lower dentures. Thanks to these generous volunteers, this veteran received thousands of dollars in donated dental treatment that restored his oral health. When Kenny first came to Dr. Burmaster for treatment, he was wearing a disposable mask to hide his teeth. After receiving life-changing care he now proudly smiles.
“The end result of my treatment was so beautiful that I cried – I didn’t even know it was me. Now, I’m full of fearless smiles and more doors are open for me. I’m embraced better by others, and I look forward to being amongst people. This literally changed my life.” – Kenny, DDS program recipient and Navy veteran
Volunteer and Change Lives
Kenny’s journey from hopelessness to restored oral health was only made possible because of generous dental professionals like you. For veterans and vulnerable individuals across the country, lack of access to dental care can negatively impact overall health, nutrition, and dignity. By volunteering your time and expertise you can change the lives of these individuals in need and restore a person’s ability to eat, smile, and live with renewed confidence. "I volunteer with Dental Lifeline Network because I have been blessed with the greatest profession in the world and I want to share my blessings with those who really need the help,” said Dr. Maria Burmaster. “Some of the most wonderful patients I have ever met have come through this program. It's a humbling experience to see what a big difference we can make in someone's life, and I recommend every dentist volunteer with Dental Lifeline Network.” Since 1987, Dental Lifeline Network’s DDS program has been operating in Louisiana and changing the lives of individuals in need of dental care across the state. Through the generosity of the program’s volunteer dental professionals and labs, Dental Lifeline Network • Louisiana’s Donated Dental Services program has connected nearly 5,700 individuals in need with necessary dental treatments in Louisiana, reaching over $13.1 million in donated services. Currently, 333 dentists and 77 labs volunteer through the DDS program in Louisiana to change the lives of the state’s most vulnerable adults – but more volunteers are needed.

Beyond the Chair: How the Right Banking and Marketing Partners Can Transform Your Dental Practice By Riley Landry, VP Commercial Relationship Manager Fidelity Bank, an LDA Premier Events Partner
M
ost dentists dedicate their lives to this profession because they have a passion for patient care—not crunching numbers or fighting algorithms. However, it’s now more important than ever for dentists to leverage more than just clinical skills to create a successful dental practice. Sound financial management, blended with an effective strategic marketing strategy, can help you build a strong business foundation to rise above the competition.
Cultivating Financial Strength in Your Practice Like most small businesses, dental practices can face unique financial challenges, such as fluctuations in monthly income, large equipment costs, and the additional process of expansion. Building a solid relationship with a trusted financial partner who understands the unique circumstances of your industry can help set you up for stability and growth. There are a few key steps you can take to be the most financially prepared when scaling your practice: • Tracking Your Income & Expenses: Knowing seasonal trends and anticipating slower periods can help you forecast available funds when determining next steps for hiring and expansion. • Create a Purchasing Plan: Large equipment purchases are inevitable, but planning ahead to replace or invest in new equipment that won’t put a strain on your operating funds is necessary to keep your budget on track. • Saving Matters: Life happens—even in your practice. Ensuring that you have emergency reserves to tap into for unexpected repairs or to leverage for future expansion is a smart way to protect your operation. 30 LDA Journal • Winter 2025
• Be Proactive in Your Growth: Whether you want to acquire a new practice, open a new location, or merge with another practice, talking with your financial partner before you start the process can help you make the right lending and investment decisions to give you the best outcome.
Effective Marketing Matters Patients today are vastly different consumers from those of 10–20 years ago. Your patients are savvy in a predominantly digital world, which means they’re researching online, reading reviews, and using social media to compare experiences before booking an appointment! Quality of care is the pinnacle of necessity, but ensuring that your brand is stable, visible, and trustworthy is the key to driving practice growth in 2025. • Develop Consistent Branding: From logo and brand colors to website and signage, ensure your brand tells your story and evokes trust in your patients. • Patient Reviews are Key: Your patients are your built-in advocates— ensure that they leave you specifically 5-star reviews to help reach new customers and boost your brand’s online presence & search visibility. • Stay Active Online: Regularly posting to your social media channels and updating your Google Business Profile with relevant posts and photos will keep you relevant online. • Your Website is Critical: Ensuring that you have a functioning, mobilefriendly home on the web is crucial for online bookings, search visibility, and telling your practice’s story.
The Power of Strategic Partnerships It’s amazing to see the sustainable growth that can happen when you choose the right partners and those partnerships work together for your specific needs. Choosing the right financial partner who helps you build a firm financial foundation can lead to you being able to invest in expert marketing services to reach new patients and hit your practice goals. In turn, choosing the right marketing partner to help you increase bookings and build customer loyalty will help you be able to reinvest in your practice financially. Ensure that both key aspects of your business are working hand in hand to grow your business. Meet Fidelity Bank’s ProMotion Program Fidelity Bank has been working with Louisiana professionals just like you for more than 115 years, so we know a little bit about helping local businesses go beyond just staying open to continually growing and thriving. Banking should be a holistic approach that scales with you—not simply a transaction exchange. That’s why Fidelity Bank has partnered with Hammond-based agency Anntoine Marketing + Design to create ProMotion, an innovative program that gives customers access to free marketing resources and services, along with exclusive discounts, just for being a business banking customer. If your practice needs a new logo, a new website, or digital ads, Fidelity Bank is giving you expert access at a discounted rate— or even for free. As a proud sponsor of the Louisiana Dental Association, Fidelity Bank believes in the importance of the role dentists play in each and every Louisiana community. When your practice grows, so does your ability to serve, and that’s something Fidelity Bank and Anntoine Marketing + Design believe is worth investing in.
