CONCERT SEASON

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | WINTER CONCERTS

YOSA musicians number more than 1,800 and come from more than 169 schools in 19 school districts.

YOSA musicians are ethnically diverse — 61% representing ethnic and racial minorities and 39% Caucasian. More than 1/3 of YOSA musicians receive tuition assistance; more than 65% receive free programs through community partnerships.

The Orchestras

More than 480 musicians are arranged into 8 orchestras with weekly rehearsals and 10 concerts annually.

Musicians with one-to-two years of playing experience begin in YOSA Prelude Strings.

As their music skills progress and improve, they may graduate into YOSA Capriccio Strings, YOSA Sinfonietta Strings and YOSA Concertino Strings. YOSA Flute Choir, YOSA Symphony and YOSA Symphonic Winds offer opportunities for string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians.

The most experienced young musicians in the region perform with the YOSA Philharmonic, playing professional-level repertoire in premier venues here and abroad, and collaborate regularly with internationally renowned soloists and composers.

The YOSA Philharmonic has represented San Antonio on 10 international tours, most recently Québec in 2014. In 2016, the YOSA Philharmonic will perform in central Europe.

Summer Symphony Camp

Each summer, more than 240 musicians convene for a two-week day camp on the campus of Saint Mary’s Hall with some of San Antonio’s finest music teachers and professional musicians as faculty. YOSA has offered summer camp since 1985; the program has expanded to include woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

School Partnerships

YOSA is committed to working with public and private schools throughout greater San Antonio. Some school partnerships involve classroom and school visits by YOSA faculty and staff. YOSA’s most comprehensive school partnerships are with the Roosevelt High School Compact in NEISD and the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy in EISD in a program called YOSA MÁS: Music At School.

The seven schools of the Roosevelt Compact, a project involving NEISD’s Roosevelt High School, two middle schools, and four elementary schools that feed Roosevelt High, is funded by Rackspace. This school partnership includes extensive interaction between young musicians, teachers, and YOSA staff.

The Edgewood Independent School District partnership includes an after-school program at two elementary schools and additional teaching resources for the middle school orchestra with plans to expand to high school.

Our History

YOSA is a successor to the city’s first community-wide youth orchestra, which was created

by SAISD in 1949.

In recent years, YOSA has expanded its reach from 483 musicians in 2008 to more than 1,800 in 2015.

YOSA is a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

The mission of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, is to enhance education, enrich the community, and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing, and fun environment that is equally accessible to all youth.

Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off your cell phones, pagers, and all other audible electronic devices before the concert begins. Children of all ages are welcome at all YOSA concerts.

We suggest those with young children sit near an exit so you can discreetly leave the auditorium in the event that your child is unable to maintain a sub-whisper level volume. Thank you.

Letter from the Board Chair Happy New Year! Thank you for joining YOSA for our winter concerts. The musicians have diligently worked to prepare an excellent performance for you. We sincerely hope you enjoy the concerts!

It is the time of year where YOSA and young musicians throughout San Antonio anticipate and prepare for YOSA Summer Symphony Camp. This year, camp will celebrate its 30th anniversary. For 30 years, camp has offered a fun and engaging musical experience. To highlight this milestone, YOSA is inviting guest artists to lend their musical excellence. One guest artist, Tracy Silverman, will offer a unique residency. Tracy, who contributed significantly to the development and repertoire for the electric 6-string violin and what he calls, “21st century violin playing,” gave a thrilling performance with the YOSA Philharmonic in 2013. We look forward to his contributions to YOSA Summer Symphony Camp and the young musicians who participate. This year’s camp will take place June 13–25, 2016 with a finale concert featuring all campers and Tracy. Check our website and Facebook pages for more information.

TROY PETERS, Music Director

Troy Peters has been Music Director of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) since 2009. He has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Vermont Mozart Festival. He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College. He has also gained international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock musicians, including Blind Pilot, Jon Anderson (of the band Yes), and Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish), with whom he worked on two albums on Elektra Records.

Peters conducted the world premiere recording of Daron Hagen’s Masquerade with violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, on Bridge Records. Among the other soloists with whom he has collaborated are Branford Marsalis, Midori, Edgar Meyer, and Richard Stoltzman. His work has been the subject of national media attention from CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, Symphony, and The New Yorker. Awarded a Vermont Arts Council Citation of Merit in 2009, he has also been honored with eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music and has conducted more than three-dozen world premieres. A popular lecturer, he has presented pre-concert talks for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and San Antonio Symphony.

Peters is also active as a composer, where his honors include the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and grants from Meet the Composer and the Rockefeller Foundation.

He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, where his primary compositional mentors were Ned Rorem and George Crumb. Born in 1969 in Greenock, Scotland (of American parents), Peters grew up in Tacoma, Washington, and lives in San Antonio with his wife and two children.

compiled by Troy Peters Moncayo: Huapango In 1934, José Pablo Moncayo (1912–1958) was near the end of his studies at the Mexican National Conservatory when a change of administration led to the elimination of the composition department. With three fellow student composers, Moncayo founded what came to be known as the “Grupo de los Quatro” in protest. These young mavericks hoped to develop a nationalistic style of classical composition based on Mexican folk tunes and rhythms.The best-known result of their effort was Moncayo’s Huapango, which premiered in 1941. A huapango is an exuberant and improvisatory Mexican dance that juxtaposes 2/4, 3/4, and 6/8, creating energetic cross-rhythms. In his fantasy on three popular dance tunes from the Veracruz region on Mexico’s Gulf Coast, Moncayo evokes the characteristic instrumentation of the Veracruz style, emphasizing harp, trumpets, and violins.

Idiomatic percussion writing and the use of “call-and-response” between soloists and sections of the orchestra create an evocative and exciting score—one of the most frequently performed works of any 20th-century Mexican composer.

Glass: Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra One of the most influential composers of the late 20th century, Philip Glass (born 1937) is a leading proponent of “minimalism”—a musical style characterized by the repetition of very short phrases that change gradually, often producing a hypnotic effect. He first attracted widespread attention with his 1976 opera Einstein on the Beach, an avant-garde tour de force that was also a commercial hit. While his symphonies, concertos, and operas are performed around the world, he has also composed dozens of well-known film scores (including The Hours, Notes on a Scandal, and The Truman Show).Timpanist Jonathan Haas first approached Glass about writing a timpani concerto in 1990. Although Glass was intrigued by the idea of adding to the repertoire of this underutilized instrument, he was busy with several opera commissions and did not have time.

Throughout the 1990s, however, the composer kept returning to the idea, finishing his Concerto Fantasy in 2000. Seeking a broader range of melodic possibilities, Glass added a second timpani soloist to increase the number of available pitches.

Haas describes the music as “purely American, heroic in nature and derivation.”

The first movement is “motoric and grooving,” while the second movement unfolds like a solemn procession. The finale is a driving mixed-meter dance, perhaps influenced by Glass’s extensive study of music from India and West Africa.

Fernández: Batuque After first studying medicine, Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernández (1897-1948) was trained in the Rio de Janeiro musical establishment, writing music that closely followed European models. A dedicated academic, he succeeded one of his own teachers as professor of harmony at the National Institute of Music in 1925, and in 1936 he founded the Brazilian Conservatory of Music, which he directed until his death. Fernández found his musical voice and launched his

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | WINTER CONCERTS career in 1924 when his Trio brasileiro, a piano trio imbued with Brazilian popular elements, won a major composition contest. All of his subsequent works are strongly nationalistic in character, often quoting folksongs. Outside of Brazil, his reputation rests on one irresistible showpiece, Batuque, which was the finale of his orchestral suite, Reisado do pastoreio (1930). This colorful triptych was based on Afro-Brazilian Christmas traditions, but does not quote actual folk melodies.

Batuque is a relentless crescendo that dances itself into a frenzied collapse—like a miniature Brazilian version of Ravel’s Bolero.

Hanson: Merry Mount Suite, Op. 31 Although Howard Hanson (1896–1981) was born in Nebraska and trained in Chicago, he spent most of his life in Rochester, New York, where he directed the Eastman School of Music for 40 years, and developed one of the most respected music schools in the world. His compositions were widely performed throughout his career, and he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1944.Hanson composed his only opera, Merry Mount, in 1933. Based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The May-Pole of Merry Mount,” the opera was warmly received by audiences during its 1934 premiere run at the Metropolitan Opera— but critics were much less enthusiastic, and the opera has rarely been revived.

Happily, Hanson’s orchestral suite from the opera, compiled in 1938, is better known. The “Overture” begins with a foreboding brass chorale, foreshadowing the fateful conflict between hedonism and puritanism among residents in the town of Merry Mount. “Children’s Dance,” a witty scherzo, accompanies the carefree dancing of non-Puritan families. The steadily building passion of the “Love Duet” depicts the secret unrequited love of the Puritan pastor for a married woman.

Finally, the “Prelude to Act II and Maypole Dances” are full of rhythmic energy and colorful melodies, driving relentlessly to a whirlwind conclusion.

Ginastera: Four Dances from Estancia, Op. 8a Born in Buenos Aires, Alberto Ginastera (1916–1983) had a rich and varied career, included teaching positions at Argentine conservatories and universities, several years in the USA, and the directorship of the Latin American Center for Advanced Musical Studies. He is one the foremost South American composers of the 20th century, and several of his piano works and orchestral compositions are standard repertoire around the world. The New York ballet impresario Lincoln Kirstein commissioned Estancia in 1941 for a planned South American tour by his company, Ballet Caravan. The plot depicts a single day on an estancia, or Argentine ranch. During the course of the day, a country woman rejects a suitor from the city until he demonstrates that he can work as hard as the gauchos. Unfortunately, Ballet Caravan disbanded in 1942, so the ballet had to wait ten years for a stage premiere. In the meantime, Ginastera extracted a suite of four dances from the score, which was introduced at the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1943.The first dance, “The Farm Workers,” from the morning sequence of the ballet, introduces the laborers with rapid, energetic music. “Wheat Dance” is a quieter episode that builds to a lyrical climax, but with an ever-present pulse in pizzicato strings and pulsing winds. “The Cattlemen” is another fast dance, switching rapidly among different meters, in which the influence of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is clearly audible. The suite, like the entire ballet, ends with a malambo, or competitive dance, in which the gauchos strive to outdo one another with increasingly vigorous steps.

PETER FLAMM, timpani

Peter Flamm is the Principal Timpanist of the San Antonio Symphony. Previously, he has held the title of Principal Timpanist with the Indianapolis Symphony, Charleston Symphony (SC) and the Canton Symphony. He has performed as a guest timpanist with many orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony, and the National Symphony. Peter has also performed and toured with the Houston Symphony and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. As an educator in San Antonio, Peter has taught at UTSA, the St. Phillips College Music Advancement program, coached the YOSA percussion section and given many in-school demonstrations for students ranging from preschool to college. He currently teaches at Trinity University and gives private lessons. Peter earned BM and MM degrees at the University of Michigan, where he received the Charles Owen Memorial Scholarship.

PETER WILSON, timpani

Peter Wilson is the timpanist of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder and the Harrisburg Symphony in Pennsylvania. He can also be heard as timpanist in recordings by the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. A resident of Phoenix, he performs frequently with the Phoenix Symphony, and each winter with Arizona Music Fest in Scottsdale. His wife Viviana is principal flute in Phoenix, and also at the Colorado Music Festival. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he began percussion lessons at age six. He is an avid maker and consumer of espresso, a bit of a foodie, and an improving home cook.

GUADALUPE DANCE COMPANY

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Guadalupe Dance Company preserves and promotes traditional Mexican Folklórico and Flamenco dance. With artistic guidance of visiting artists from the US, Mexico and Spain, the Dance Company presents original dance productions in the Guadalupe Theater throughout the year. Included in the Company’s list of presenters is the Nashville, Houston and San Antonio Symphonies; Canisius College of Buffalo, New York; Del Rio Council on the Arts; Northeast Texas Community College; and Miller Outdoor Theater in Houston, TX. This year’s dance season will include a series of Flamenco Fridays in June and a culminating Anniversary Celebration in October. In addition to the Dance Company, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) offers dance classes for all ages and levels through its Dance Academy. compiled by Troy Peters Sometime in the 1770s, English composer and organist John Stafford Smith wrote “To Anacreon in Heaven” to serve as theme song for the Anacreontic Society, an exclusive London club of amateur musicians. Over the next few decades, the tune became a popular tavern song in England and the United States. In 1814, when Francis Scott Key wrote the words that would become known as The Star-Spangled Banner, he set them to Smith’s tune, which was widely known at the time.

John Caponegro directed school orchestras from elementary to high school for more than 40 years in New York. His work as a composer shows his tremendous experience with student musicians at every level. His Rhumbolero, published in 1975, has become a classic for young string players, with its accessible evocation of Latin rhythms.

Born in Korea in 1974, Soon Hee Newbold grew up in Maryland and has a thriving career as a violinist, conductor, and even actress. She is best known, however, as a composer of orchestral works for students. In The Wild Western Frontier, Newbold skillfully evokes cowboys and cattle ranches with string melodies influenced by the film music of Elmer Bernstein and Dmitri Tiomkin, as well as the cowboy ballets of Aaron Copland.

In the 1850s and 1860s, Jacques Offenbach concocted a series of operettas that became the most popular theatrical entertainments in Paris, combining memorable tunes with rousing stories and a generous helping of political and social satire. His biggest hit was Orpheus in the Underworld (1858), which turns the Greek myth on its head by casting Orpheus and Eurydice as bickering spouses who are ultimately happy to be rid of each other. The famous “Can-Can” was a parody of a scandalous but popular Parisian dance of the time, appearing in the operetta as a festive dance by the residents of the Underworld.

Carold Nunez was a longtime high school orchestra director in Denton, Texas.

In 1989, he was presented with the Texas Orchestra Director of the Year Award.

He wrote his Little Symphony in the style of Mozart, with a strong emphasis on exploring a wide variety of bowing techniques.

During his lifetime, Johann Sebastian Bach was probably better known as an organist than as a composer. In the century after his death, however, he became widely regarded as one of the greatest composers who ever lived. Bach was especially adept at counterpoint, composing a remarkable set of 48 pairs of preludes and fugues called The Well-Tempered Clavier. The Fugue in D major is transcribed from the second volume of this monumental work.

Domenico Cimarosa was a prolific and popular Italian opera composer who lived around the same time as Mozart. Like most opera composers of his time, he also wrote many brief instrumental and keyboard pieces, mostly intended for amateur performance at home. In the Cimarosa Suite, American composer Thom Ritter George arranged several of Cimarosa’s most attractive instrumental music for flute trio.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | WINTER CONCERTS Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Cantata No. 208, the “Hunt Cantata,” in 1716 for the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels, and it was performed as banquet music in his hunting lodge. “Sheep May Safely Graze” was originally a soprano aria in the cantata. The calm, flowing music paints a picture of the original text: “Flocks and herds may safely pasture when their shepherd guards them well. They whose monarch loves them truly knows their needs and fills them duly, will in peace and concord dwell.”

The legend that Georges Bizet died heartbroken at the failure of what would later become his most popular opera, Carmen, is untrue. In fact, the opera enjoyed its 33rd performance on the very night that Bizet succumbed to the heart attack that killed him. More likely, Bizet’s initial disappointment at the opera’s unfavorable critical reception had already been assuaged by its popularity with audiences.

This excerpt from Carmen, arranged for flute quartet, vividly displays the melodic charms of the opera.

A century ago, John Philip Sousa was one of America’s most popular composers, widely known as “the March King.” He conducted widely and composed prolifically—not just marches, but also dances, quadrilles, variations, and even operettas. Sousa composed Semper Fidelis in 1888, when he was conductor of “The President’s Own” Marine Corps Band, at the request of President Chester Arthur. The march quickly came to be widely known as the official march of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Although Texas native John Barnes Chance lived a relatively short life (he died a few months before his 40th birthday) he left a legacy of several standard works in the wind band repertoire. When he served in Seoul, South Korea, as a member of the Eighth U.S. Army Band, Chance came across a pentatonic Korean folk song called “Arirang.” Later, when he returned to the U.S., this melody served as the inspiration for his popular 1965 composition Variations on a Korean Folk Song.

Robert Jager was also a military musician, having served four years in the U.S. Navy as staff arranger and composer at the Armed Forces School of Music.

Jager later taught for 30 years at Tennessee Tech University and settled in Cookeville, Tennessee. His Third Suite, composed in 1965, has become a popular standard in the wind band literature.

Despite suffering intense scrutiny and occasional persecution from the Soviet government, Dmitri Shostakovich created a large body of expressive and sometimes celebratory music. His Folk Dances began as a movement called “Youth Dance (Song of the Sailors)” in incidental music for a 1942 play called Native Country, paying tribute to the courage of the citizens of Leningrad during the Nazi siege. M. Vakhutinsky transcribed the music for military band, and then H. Robert Reynolds adapted this version for American wind bands.

compiled by Troy Peters During his lifetime, Johann Sebastian Bach was probably better known as an organist than as a composer. In the century after his death, however, he became widely regarded as one of the greatest composers who ever lived. Bach was especially adept at counterpoint, composing many fugues for his performance at the pipe organ. He wrote his “Little” Fugue in G minor at some point during his years as organist at Arnstadt (1703–1707). It is often known as the “Little Fugue” to distinguish it from the longer Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542.

Vasily Kalinikov was a remarkably promising young composer in Moscow in the 1890s, gaining much support and acclaim from colleagues like Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Perhaps he would be better known today had he not died at the young age of 35. He wrote his lovely Serenade for Strings for his 1891 graduation concert at the Moscow Philharmonic Society School.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s fifth child and second (surviving) son, was an influential composer working at a time of transition between his father’s baroque style and the classical style that followed. The Symphony in C major on today’s concert was one of a half dozen that C.P.E. Bach wrote in Hamburg in 1773 for Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who was also a patron of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven.

The four symphonies of German composer Johannes Brahms are widely regarded as the pinnacle of late 19th century orchestral music, beautifully balancing heartfelt expression with impeccable craftsmanship. The Allegro giocoso from Symphony No. 4 is a rollicking scherzo, overflowing with high spirits and raw energy. (Progressive rock fans might remember Rick Wakeman’s keyboard arrangement of this music under the title “Cans and Brahms” on Fragile, the 1971 album by the band Yes.) Colorado composer Susan H. Day is a middle school orchestra director and a violinist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic. Day received the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Outstanding Colorado Teacher of the Year Award in 2000. The composer describes her Reverie as evoking “a happy daydream, or being lost in thought.”

Composer Paul O’Neill founded the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) in 1996, along with keyboardist and co-producer Robert Kinkel. Wizards in Winter, an instrumental track from their 2004 album The Lost Christmas Eve, has become one of their most popular compositions. Often used to open their live shows, its musical style incorporates progressive rock and heavy metal, with influences from classical music.

Gioachino Rossini’s opera The Italian Girl in Algiers was first performed in Venice in 1813, when the composer was just 21 years old. Soon the opera was produced in Germany and France, making it Rossini’s first international hit, and its sparkling overture premiered in the United States in 1824. The opera is comic, so the overture’s light-hearted mood suits the story—but all of Rossini’s overtures are similarly joyful. The mood bespeaks the festivity of opera itself, not any particular plotline.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | WINTER CONCERTS During a 10-month trip to Italy in 1830 and 1831, Felix Mendelssohn visited most of the major Italian cities. In Rome, he witnessed the coronation of Pope Pius VIII and the city’s festivities during Holy Week. His impressions of the trip were recorded in a series of watercolors and sketches and in the “Italian” Symphony.

The Andante con moto recalls the impressive processions he had seen during his time in Rome.

In 1918, Prince Albert of Monaco commissioned the 73-year-old Gabriel Fauré to write a short dramatic work for the Monte Carlo theater. Rapidly losing his hearing, the composer wasn’t particularly interested in writing a new piece for just a few performances, so he decided to rework, expand, and link together various previously composed choral pieces, songs, and instrumental works. The final result included eight charming pieces, which the Fauré pared down to a fourmovement orchestral suite he called Masques et Bergamasques. This suite was premiered at the Paris Conservatory in November 1919.

Andy Post, YOSA Symphonic Winds Conductor Andy Post directed bands at Wood, Jackson, and Lopez Middle Schools in North East ISD and is an active consultant, clinician, and adjudicator. He has earned Teacher of the Year, Trinity Prize Distinguished Educator Award for NEISD, Who’s Who of American Teachers, PTA Lifetime Award, and was nominated for Disney National Teacher of the Year. His ensembles consistently earn Sweepstakes Awards at UIL and have been recognized at the Region, Area, and State levels

by Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and nationally by Choice Music National Wind Band Competition. Andy resides in San Antonio with his wife and two sons.

Kenneth Freudigman, YOSA Symphony & YOSA Concertino Strings Conductor Kenneth Freudigman is the co-founder and artistic director of two-time Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble Camerata San Antonio, principal cello of the San Antonio Symphony, a highly respected cello teacher, and conductor of the YOSA Symphony and Concertino Strings orchestras. Ken began his work as YOSA Symphony conductor in 2012.

Kristin Hayes, YOSA Flute Choir Conductor In addition to serving as director of the YOSA Flute Choir, Dr. Kristin Hayes currently teaches flute and music theory at St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake University. She formerly held teaching positions at University of Texas San Antonio and Florida State University. During the summer, she teaches and performs at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and UTSA’s annual Flute Camp. An active performer and clinician, Dr. Hayes has performed and presented at various festivals and conventions, including the National Flute Association Convention, MTNA National Convention, Mid-South Flute Festival, and the Florida Flute Association Convention. She has also performed and held master classes at various institutions throughout North and Central America, and she frequently serves as adjudicator for local, state, regional, and national competitions.

Brenda Johnson, YOSA Sinfonietta Strings Conductor Brenda Johnson is orchestra director at Hector Garcia Middle School (Northside ISD), where she opened the school as founding conductor of the Gladiator Orchestra program. In their first year as a brand new school, the Chamber Orchestra received fourth place in the TMEA Honor Orchestra Competition.

Originally from McAllen, Texas, Mrs. Johnson received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Texas. She began her teaching career with the Plano Independent School District where she received Teacher of the Year for Bowman Middle School in 2009. In 2004, Mrs. Johnson was one of four teachers in Texas to receive the Marjorie Keller Young Music Educator Award from the American String Teacher Association. She has served as secretary and treasurer for TexASTA and is a member of Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and the American String Teacher Association with National School Orchestra Association.

Jonathan Raveneau, YOSA Capriccio Strings Conductor Jonathan Raveneau is a versatile and eclectic musician with specialties range from classical to jazz in both instrumental and vocal genres. Jonathan joined YOSA as conductor in 2010. Jonathan also conducts the Cavatina Orchestra for the Hill Country Youth Orchestras.

Jacobi Caldwell, YOSA Prelude Strings Conductor Jacobi Caldwell, Conductor of YOSA Prelude Strings, earned her Bachelor of Music, String Emphasis, from the University of South Carolina. She studied conducting with David Rudge and participated in the USC Conductor’s Institute. She worked with the South Carolina Phiharmonic Youth Orchestra and the USC String Project. Following that, she taught in public schools, then spent years performing commercially. One of the highlights of her journey was moving to Texas and working with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra. She has gone on to teach at Kerrville ISD and Alamo Heights ISD, winning UIL Sweepstakes at every competition. She is currently teaching in Boerne ISD. Eugene Dowdy, Resident Conductor Eugene Dowdy is professor and director of orchestral studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, conductor of the UTSA Orchestra and Lyric Theatre, and head of instrumental conducting. He also serves as conductor and artistic director for the Symphony of the Hills (Kerrville) and is the founding director of the UTSA String Project. Dr. Dowdy conducted YOSA’s Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1992, was the Interim Philharmonic Conductor in 2000, and named an honorary resident conductor in 2002. He researched and wrote YOSA’s history for his doctoral essay at the University of Iowa in 1995 and is a past president of TODA and TexASTA. 23
