SPRING

CONCERT SEASON

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS

YOSA reaches more than 3,000 young musicians in the San Antonio area. More than 750 musicians participate in YOSA Orchestras and Summer Symphony Camp and an additional 2,400 receive free services through YOSA School Partnerships and the YOSA Invitational. YOSA musicians represent 155 schools from 25 school districts and reflect the ethnic diversity of San Antonio. Ethnic and racial minorities represent 76% of the young musicians YOSA serves.

The Orchestras

More than 525 musicians are arranged into 9 orchestras with weekly rehearsals and 11 concerts annually. Musicians with one-to-two years of playing experience begin in Prelude Strings. As their music skills progress and improve, they may graduate into Capriccio Strings, Sinfonietta Strings, Repertory Strings, and Concertino Strings. Flute Choir, Symphony, and Symphonic Winds offer opportunities for string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians. The most experienced young musicians in the region perform with the YOSA Philharmonic, playing professional-level repertoire in premier venues here and abroad, and collaborate regularly with internationally renowned soloists and composers. The YOSA Philharmonic has represented San Antonio on 11 international tours, most recently to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in 2016.

Summer Symphony Camp

Each summer, more than 250 students convene for a two-week day camp on the campus of Saint Mary’s Hall with some of San Antonio’s finest music teachers and professional musicians as faculty. YOSA has offered summer camp since 1985; the program has expanded to include woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

School Partnerships

YOSA is committed to working with public and private schools throughout greater San Antonio. Some school partnerships involve classroom and school visits by YOSA faculty and staff. YOSA’s most comprehensive school partnerships are with the Roosevelt High School Compact in NEISD and the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy in EISD in a program called YOSA MÁS:Music At School. New in 2017, the YOSA Invitational provides the opportunity for local middle school and high school bands and orchestras to perform in San Antonio’s premier venue, the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. YOSA offers this resource to school music programs at no charge. An application process starts in February the year prior and participating groups are announced by August. Sixteen local music programs have been selected to participate at the first annual YOSA Invitational on May 15 and 16, 2017.

Our History

YOSA is a successor to the city’s first community-wide youth orchestra, which was created by SAISD in 1949. In recent years, YOSA has expanded its reach from 483 musicians in 2008 to more than 3,000 in 2016. YOSA is a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The mission of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, is to enhance education, enrich the community and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing and fun environment that is equally accessible to all youth. Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off your cell phones, pagers, and all other audible electronic devices before the concert begins. Children of all ages are welcome at all YOSA concerts. We suggest that you sit near an exit so you can discreetly exit the auditorium in the event that your child is unable to maintain a sub-whisper level volume. Thank you.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS

PROGRAM NOTES

compiled by Troy Peters Hovhaness: And God Created Great Whales

Early in 1970, a marine biologist gave the RussianAmerican conductor Andre Kostelanetz recordings of humpback whale songs, from a soon-to-be-released LP record that would go on to sell millions of copies, thinking they might make interesting material for a composer to respond to. Kostelanetz immediately approached Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000), who had a strong track record of producing atmospheric music blending elements of Armenian and other Asian music with 20th century classical techniques, about writing a new work for the New York Philharmonic’s Promenade concert series.

Hovhaness loved the idea of basing a composition on whale songs but preferred not to incorporate the actual taped sounds, hoping instead to imitate the whales with orchestral effects such as trombone glissandos. Eventually, however, Kostelanetz convinced Hovhaness to include the recorded sounds, and the composer wrote the music in about two weeks. The New York Philharmonic premiered the resulting piece in June 1970. With a title drawn from the Biblical creation story in Genesis, And God Created Great Whales quickly became one of the prolific composer’s most popular and frequently performed works. Hovhaness later described the music this way: “Free rhythm-less vibrational passages, each string player playing independently, suggest waves in a vast ocean sky. Undersea mountains rise and fall in horns, trombones, and tuba. Music of whales also rises and falls like mountain ranges. The song of the whale emerges like a giant mythical sea bird. Man does not exist, has not yet been born in the solemn oneness of Nature.” Holst: The Planets

Like Hovhaness, English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934) had a lifelong interest in mythology and folklore from around the world, and his output includes music inspired by Algerian culture, Indian legends, and Japanese dances. But Holst’s most famous work, The Planets, grew out of his fascination with astrology.

In the spring of 1913, Holst was vacationing on the Spanish island of Mallorca with a few other English artists, including the writer Clifford Bax. Holst spent long hours talking with Bax about astrology and became especially taken with Alan Leo’s book, What Is a Horoscope? When Holst returned to London, where he taught music at St. Paul’s Girl’s School, he began to plan a seven-part suite for large orchestra, exploring the astrological character of the planets. (Why seven planets? Earth was not ascribed astrological characteristics, and Pluto had yet to be discovered.)

10

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS Holst began work on “Mars, the Bringer of War” in 1914, just after the outbreak of World War I. Unresolved harmonies and unrelated chords are superimposed over a relentless, driving five-beat rhythmic pattern, resulting in dissonant clashes that aptly depict conflict. Composed in an era when war was becoming increasingly mechanized and brutal, “Mars” remains a powerful picture of the unforgiving nature of combat. Few scores have influenced film composers more powerfully, from Star Wars to The Lord of the Rings and beyond. It is difficult to imagine a more complete contrast than “Venus, the Bringer of Peace,” an oasis of calm after the fury of Mars. Slowly rising melodic lines in the horns and woodwinds float over lush strings, finally giving way to the heavenly shimmer of the celesta, harps, and glockenspiel. Throughout, Holst evokes a feeling of peace and of vertiginous space.

“Mercury, the Winged Messenger” was the last movement Holst composed, two years after he began work on The Planets. This quicksilver scherzo flies by, with fragments of scales in two different keys jostling against each other in unsettled bursts of energy. Holst described Mercury as “the symbol of the mind,” which might give some insight into his own mercurial, unpredictable temperament.

Describing “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity,” Holst asserted that it “brings jollity in the ordinary sense, and also the more ceremonial kind of rejoicing associated with religious or national festivities.” The opening is pure joy, with syncopated, celebratory melodies that almost imitate the sound of laughter. The more ceremonial central section is based on a stately melody in strings and horns, reminiscent of Holst’s English predecessor, Edward Elgar. (This melody’s popularity led Holst to rearrange it a few years later as a patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, My Country.”) Holst said more than once that his favorite movement of The Planets was “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age,” a portrait of time’s inexorable march. A slow, repeated two-note pattern in the flutes and harps steadily ticks away over low, sustained melodies in the strings. Later, marching brass chorales build to a clangorous climax with peeling bells. Finally, the music arrives in a place of peace, tempered perhaps with the wisdom and harmony of old age.

In “Uranus, the Magician,” Holst seems to have drawn some inspiration from the famous bouncing bassoons in another portrait of musical wizardry, Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, composed almost 20 years earlier. The four-note fanfare that opens the movement returns again and again, like an incantation calling the rest of the music into being. Ultimately, because Uranus is a prankster, we hear not only the evidence of tricks, but also the mischief-maker’s smug satisfaction with his own cleverness. If Uranus evokes Dukas, “Neptune, the Mystic” is redolent of Debussy. Quiet and contemplative melodic fragments sound against sustained woodwind and brass chords. The fragments gradually evolve into a series of rising chromatic line, sounded by both the orchestra and a wordless offstage women’s chorus. Everything fades away in the end, leaving only the voices, which gradually disappear into the far reaches of outer space.

PROGRAM NOTES

compiled by Kathleen Messina & Troy Peters John Caponegro directed school orchestras from elementary to high school for more than 40 years in New York. His work as a composer shows his tremendous experience with student musicians at every level. His 1975 composition Fiddling A-Round is a perfect example of his ability to write tuneful and engaging works for young string players.

“Loch Lomond,” also known as the “The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond,” is a traditional Scottish song first published in 1841. In Scotland, the song is often the final piece of music played during a party or special event. The folksong’s original composer is unknown, but Noah Klauss’ string orchestra version joins a long line of versions by artists as varied as AC/DC and Benny Goodman. Katy Perry’s 2010 song Firework, which she co-wrote with several songwriters and producers, was one of the biggest international hits of the last decade. Its blend of uplifting lyrics, anthemic melody, and driving beats proved an irresistible combination. Florida music educator and composer Robert Longfield crafted the string orchestra arrangement on today’s program.

French composer François-Joseph Gossec was a favorite of Marie Antoinette’s but was later widely admired during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. These days, Gossec is almost forgotten, except for the charming “Tamborin” for flute, an excerpt from his one-act opera, The Triumph of the Republic, composed in 1794 to celebrate the French Revolution. Pierre-Max Dubois, also French, was born nearly two centuries after Gossec. Like his teacher, Darius Milhaud, Dubois crafted music that incorporates piquant 20th century harmonies with engaging and often lighthearted melodies and rhythm. His 1962 Flute Quartet is typical of his expert writing for woodwind instruments.

Samuel Adler was born in Germany in 1928, but his family came to America in 1939 to escape the rise of the Nazis. The author of several textbooks on conducting and orchestration, Adler taught composition at the renowned Eastman School of Music for three decades. His 1986 flute sextet, Madrigals, is based on three folksongs from different parts of the world. Franz Joseph Haydn did not invent the string quartet, but he became the form’s first master, writing 68 remarkable examples. Haydn composed the group of six quartets that would later be published as Opus 33 in 1781 and dedicated them to Grand Duke Paul of Russia. Texas orchestra director Matthew Moreno, who crafted the arrangement on today’s program, writes: “The Bird shows the more playful and lighthearted side of Haydn, portraying birdlike calls as the melody is passed to each section.”

Baltimore conductor and composer Brian Balmages has written a wide variety of music for student bands and orchestras. Commissioned by the Bridle Path/ Montgomery Elementary Select String Ensemble in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, Ice Sculptures depicts the construction, arrival of visitors, and eventual melting of a temporary hotel built of ice and snow. Jeffrey Bishop is a music educator, composer, and conductor in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. His Orange Jam, composed for a school group in Oregon in 2007, is an energetic string orchestra groove that imitates the sounds and techniques of rock guitar.

16

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS New England composer and conductor Edwin Eugene Bagley composed National Emblem during a 1902 train tour with his band. Frustrated with the march’s ending, he threw it away—but members of his band retrieved the score and surprised Bagley by playing the march at their next concert. Bagley’s clever reimagining of The Star-Spangled Banner’s melody quickly made this march his most popular work.

The seis is a folkdance of the Jibaro people, peasant farmers from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Shelley Hanson’s Seis Manuel, is based on a traditional harmonic pattern called the seis mapeyé, over which a singer improvises a melody. In keeping with the Puerto Rican custom of naming a seis after someone important to its creation, Hanson named Seis Manuel in honor of Minneapolis conductor Manny Laureano, who commissioned and premiered the piece.

Sea Songs is English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ rousing march based on three traditional British nautical songs: “Princess Royal,” “Admiral Benbow,” and “Portsmouth.” The music began life in 1923 as a movement in Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, composed for the band at the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall. After the premiere performance, the composer decided to remove Sea Songs from the suite and publish it separately. Alfred Reed is one of America’s most widely performed composers of band music. Lee Holmes, director of the Edmonton Public School Symphonic Band in Edmonton, Alberta, commissioned Reed’s colorful First Suite for Band in 1974 for performance at the Canadian Music Educator Association convention the following spring. The suite consists of four contrasting movements: March, Melody, Rag, and Gallop.

PROGRAM NOTES

compiled by Kathleen Messina & Troy Peters California composer Richard Meyer has not only written dozens of works for student orchestras, but also served for many years as music director of the Sacramento Youth Symphony Orchestra. His Beethoven, Inc. cleverly intertwines Beethoven’s famous “Ode to Joy” with other popular classical melodies by Mozart, Offenbach, Brahms, Handel, Bach, Saint-Saëns, and Rossini. “Jupiter” is the fourth movement of Gustav Holst’s popular orchestral masterpiece, The Planets, composed between 1914 and 1916. Deborah Baker Monday’s string orchestra arrangement focuses on the ceremonial middle section of the piece, which is reminiscent of Holst’s English predecessor, Edward Elgar. The primary melody’s popularity led Holst to rearrange it a few years later as a patriotic hymn, “I Vow to Thee, My Country,” still widely sung in England.

Carold Nunez was a longtime high school orchestra director in Denton, Texas. In 1989, he was presented with the Texas Orchestra Director of the Year Award. For his string orchestra classic M to the Third Power, Nunez offered the subtitle “Minor Meter Mix.” The piece energetically explores a variety of time signatures and rhythmic patterns in a minor key.

Italian composer and cellist Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco was a colleague of many better-known composers, like Vivaldi and Corelli. He spent most of his career, however, outside of Italy, pursuing a wealth of opportunities in Germany, Holland, Belgium, and France. Dall’Abaco’s Concerto in B minor is typical of his engaging style, similar in spirit and character to the works of his Italian baroque contemporaries. Cecil Armstrong Gibbs wrote a great deal of music for British amateur choirs and orchestras, and a few of his songs for voice and piano are still popular in England. Gibbs’ Miniature Dance Suite, composed in 1949, is reminiscent of Peter Warlock’s beloved Capriol Suite, a harmonic modernization of consonant tunes set to oldfashioned dance rhythms.

One of classical music’s greatest prodigies, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent his childhood touring castles and concert halls in Europe, playing concerts and writing music. The Magic Flute, however, is a work of maturity, dating from 1791, the last year of his short life—he was only 35 when he died. The Overture opens seriously, but soon becomes a joyful romp.

Throughout the first half of the early 20th century, English composer Adam Carse was a respected music professor, first at Winchester College and later at the Royal College of Music. Today, his reputation as a composer rests on one piece, his Winton Suite, published in 1933. Winton is a suburb of Bournemouth (in the south of England), and Carse’s music depicts it as a place of pastoral calm and joyful contentment. New York composer David Bobrowitz is a retired music educator. Based loosely on the 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Wonderland captures the fun and mystery of Alice’s wonderland experiences, evoking the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and other famous characters. Early in his career, the Russian composer Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov was appointed conductor of an orchestra in Tblisi, Georgia. Inspired by the ethnic minorities in the region, he wrote several pieces evoking a variety of folk styles, the most celebrated of which was his “Procession of the Sardar.” Having established a reputation for musical depictions of other cultures, he returned to this idea throughout his career. His colorful 1930 suite, Turkish Fragments, actually draws on material from Azerbaijani, Turkish, Uzbek, and Kazakh folk music.

Because he was nervous about his potential to make a living in music, the young Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov became an officer in the Russian navy. To his own surprise, however, he also became one of Russia’s leading composers, joining the faculty at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory when he was only 27. His Russian Easter Overture, composed in 1888 and dedicated to the memories of fellow composers Modest Mussorgsky and Alexander Borodin, is a brilliant orchestral tour de force, built on melodies drawn from a collection of old Russian Orthodox liturgical chants called the Obikhod.
