CONCERT SEASON

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS

YOSA musicians number more than 1,800 and come from more than 159 schools in 19 school districts.

YOSA musicians are ethnically diverse — 61% representing ethnic and racial minorities and 39% Caucasian. More than 1/3 of YOSA musicians receive tuition assistance; more than 65% receive free programs through community partnerships.

The Orchestras

More than 480 musicians are arranged into 8 orchestras with weekly rehearsals and 10 concerts annually.

Musicians with one- to-two years of playing experience begin in YOSA Prelude Strings.

As their music skills progress and improve, they may graduate into Capriccio Strings, Sinfonietta Strings and Concertino Strings. YOSA Flute Choir, Symphony and Symphonic Winds offer opportunities for string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians.

The most experienced young musicians in the region perform with the YOSA Philharmonic, playing professional-level repertoire in premier venues here and abroad, collaborating regularly with internationally renowned soloists and composers.

The YOSA Philharmonic has represented San Antonio on 10 international tours, most recently Québec in 2014. In 2016 the YOSA Philharmonic will perform in central Europe.

Summer Symphony Camp

Each summer, more than 240 students convene for a two-week day camp on the campus of Saint Mary’s Hall with some of San Antonio’s finest music teachers and professional musicians as faculty. YOSA has been offering summer camp since 1985; the program has expanded to include woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

School Partnerships

YOSA is committed to working with public and private schools throughout greater San Antonio. Some school partnerships involve classroom and school visits by YOSA faculty and staff. YOSA’s most comprehensive school partnerships are with the Roosevelt High School Compact in NEISD and the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy in EISD in a program called YOSA MÁS:Music At School.

The seven schools of the Roosevelt Compact, a project involving NEISD’s Roosevelt High School and two middle schools and four elementary schools that feed Roosevelt High, is funded by Rackspace. This school partnership includes extensive interaction between YOSA staff, teachers, and young musicians.

The Edgewood Independent School District partnership includes an after-school program at two elementary schools, and additional teaching resources at the middle school orchestra with plans to expand to high school.

Our History

YOSA is a successor to the city’s first community-wide youth orchestra, which was created

by SAISD in 1949.

In recent years, YOSA has expanded its reach from 483 musicians in 2008 to more than 1,800 in 2015.

YOSA is a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

The mission of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, is to enhance education, enrich the community and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing and fun environment that is equally accessible to all youth.

Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off your cell phones, pagers, and all other audible electronic devices before the concert begins. Children of all ages are welcome at all YOSA concerts. We suggest that you sit near an exit so you can discreetly exit the auditorium in the event that your child is unable to maintain a sub-whisper level volume. Thank you.

Letter from the Board Chair Welcome! On behalf of YOSA’s board, thank you for attending our spring concerts. We are thrilled that you are joining us for the final City Series and Gold Series concerts of the 2015/16 season.

As you listen to these talented young musicians—who represent 159 public and private schools in 19 districts and 36 home schools—I hope you are reminded of YOSA’s vision and your vital role within this organization.

What YOSA does; eight orchestras, Summer Symphony Camp, and School Partnerships; is made possible through your generosity. The YOSA Board of Directors is working hard to steward your kindness and create experiences for young musicians that only YOSA can provide.

The 2016/17 season is shaping up to be another fantastic year and includes the first annual YOSA Invitational. YOSA will host 16 high school and middle school bands and orchestras to record and perform in the Tobin Center’s renowned H-E-B Performance Hall free of charge to all participating ensembles. We invite any school interested in participating to visit www.yosa.org/invitational for more information and to submit an application by June 1, 2016.

Other YOSA family members have also been planning for next year. The board extends its best wishes especially to our seniors who are about to graduate from high school. We have no doubt that our graduates will carry the virtues learned and expressed in YOSA—discipline, creativity, patience, and grace under pressure—with them for the rest of their lives. Seniors, congratulations on this next step! You will always have a place in YOSA, and we hope you continue to participate with us as alumni.

The concert season may be concluding, but YOSA’s summer months are busy.

The YOSA Board of Directors is looking forward to the 2016 YOSA Summer Symphony Camp; a two week-long intensive music camp taught by excellent YOSA faculty. Any young musicians interested in registering for the camp should please visit the YOSA website at yosa.org.

Musicians from the YOSA Philharmonic will soon embark on a 10 day tour to Vienna, Prague, and Budapest in July. YOSA alumna and San Antonio Symphony musician, Jennifer Berg, will join the orchestra to perform in wonderful concert halls. Don’t miss the free Bon Voyage concert on July 10 at 4 p.m. at the UIW Concert Hall.

TROY PETERS, Music Director

Troy Peters has been Music Director of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) since 2009. He has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Vermont Mozart Festival. He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College. He has also gained international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock musicians, including Blind Pilot, Jon Anderson (of the band Yes), and Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish), with whom he worked on two albums on Elektra Records.

Peters conducted the world premiere recording of Daron Hagen’s Masquerade with violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, on Bridge Records. Among the other soloists with whom he has collaborated are Branford Marsalis, Midori, Edgar Meyer, and Richard Stoltzman. His work has been the subject of national media attention from CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, Symphony, and The New Yorker. Awarded a Vermont Arts Council Citation of Merit in 2009, he has also been honored with eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music and has conducted more than three-dozen world premieres. A popular lecturer, he has presented pre-concert talks for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and San Antonio Symphony.

Peters is also active as a composer, where his honors include the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and grants from Meet the Composer and the Rockefeller Foundation.

He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, where his primary compositional mentors were Ned Rorem and George Crumb. Born in 1969 in Greenock, Scotland (of American parents), Peters grew up in Tacoma, Washington, and lives in San Antonio with his wife and two children.

compiled by Troy Peters Liszt (orch. Müller-Berghaus): Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 Born in a region of Hungary that later became part of Austria, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) traveled so extensively as a young piano virtuoso that he spent very little time in his homeland.

He never fully mastered his native tongue, having been raised speaking French instead. Despite these loose ties to Hungary, however, Liszt had a deep and abiding love for Hungarian folk music, especially as it was expressed in the music of the Romani (or “gypsy”) people.

The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 is the most famous of dozens of works Liszt based on Hungarian melodies and rhythms, including 18 other Hungarian rhapsodies. Like many of his works in this style, the rhapsody we hear today draws on the tradition of the csárdás, a folk dance that opens with a slow, somber section (called a lassan) and culminates in a driving, fast dance (friska). Liszt wrote this music in 1847 for solo piano, but its popularity led to multiple orchestral versions appearing over the next few years. Some listeners might remember the rhapsody from its many appearances in classic American cartoons, including famous examples featuring Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and others.

Ewazen: Down a River of Time One of the most influential composers of the late 20th century.

A longtime faculty member at the Juilliard School, Eric Ewazen (born 1954) is the composer of dozens of widely performed works featuring woodwind and brass instruments. Oboist Linda Strommen, a dear friend of Ewazen, commissioned Down a River of Time as a memorial tribute to her father. She was soloist in the concerto’s premiere performance in 1999, at the Bellingham (Washington) Festival of Music. The composer writes: Because I had also recently lost my father, this piece became a very personal meditation on life and death. On the day my father died, a beautiful essay by Richard Feagler coincidentally appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, in which he told poignant, funny, and heartfelt stories of his relatives and parents, long since gone. Near the end of this essay, titled “Christmas Past Comes Alive at Aunt Ida’s,” he describes these beloved souls “moving, though they can’t feel the current, down a river of time.” This became the title of the concerto, a work that contemplates this inexorable rushing river.

The first movement portrays that river of time with its ebbs and flows, hopes and dreams. The second movement portrays emotions felt during times of loss—powerful feelings running the gamut from sorrow to resignation to tenderness and peace at the remembrance of happier distant times. In the final movement, those happier memories flood the music, as feelings of strength and determination supersede all else, and the work comes to its virtuosic conclusion with a joyful intensity.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS Dvořák: Symphony No. 8 Late in the summer of 1889, Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) left Prague and went to his country home in Vysoká. He wrote that he wanted to compose something “different from my other symphonies, with individual thoughts worked out in a new way.”

He finished the first movement in only two weeks, commenting, “Melodies simply pour out of me.” The second movement followed a week later, and the remaining two in just a few days each. After spending another six weeks orchestrating and editing the score, Dvořák had completed his Eighth Symphony, less than three months after sketching the first notes.

Dvořák’s Moravian Duets and Slavonic Dances had been big hits for his publisher, Simrock, so the composer was insulted when the company offered him an unusually low fee to publish his new symphony in 1890. Since Dvořák was also popular in England, he sold the rights to the London firm of Novello instead—in direct breach of his contract with Simrock!

The Eighth Symphony is Dvořák’s most bucolic and peaceful. Like Beethoven’s Sixth, Brahms’ Second, or Mahler’s Fourth, it is a pastoral symphony, full of visions of country life. In Dvořák’s case, that also means that whiffs of Bohemian folksongs and country-dances are always in the air.

Despite the symphony’s mostly sunny character, the first movement opens with a melancholy tune in the cellos (doubled by horns and clarinets). This tune returns to introduce each of the three major sections in the piece, always followed by a flute melody that resembles birdsong. The music overflows with melody throughout; as composer Leoš Janácek observed, “You’ve scarcely met one tune before another beckons with a friendly nod, so you’re in a state of constant but pleasurable excitement.”

The second movement has always struck me as a sort of musical travelogue, like walking through the woods at dusk and witnessing a variety of scenes. It feels alternately calm, somber, and contented. The flute again imitates birdsong; the clarinets sing mournfully; the trumpets and timpani pound out a forceful fanfare— each episode like a scene in a movie. In some ways, it even resembles the early symphonies Mahler was writing at about the same time.

The third movement is not a conventional scherzo, but a lilting, radiant waltz.

Again, melody abounds; Dvořák recycled the main theme of the middle section (played over a limping, syncopated accompaniment) from his 1874 comic opera, The Stubborn Lovers. In its final section, the waltz becomes a joyful polka, before fading to a quiet close.

After a brief trumpet fanfare, the finale settles into a warm cello melody.

Dvořák then spins out variations on the cello tune, including a yawping, brassy exclamation; a virtuosic flute roulade; and a forceful minor-key march.

The variations become increasingly gentle, eventually fading away almost completely—only to be interrupted by a jubilant, swashbuckling coda.

JENNIFER BERG, oboe

San Antonio native and YOSA alumna, Jennifer Berg feels blessed to return to her hometown as English horn and oboe with the San Antonio Symphony. Prior to her homecoming, Ms. Berg received her Bachelor’s from Indiana University, graduating with Honors in Music under the tutelage of Linda Strommen. She continued her education with John Ferrillo of the Boston Symphony at the New England Conservatory and received both a Graduate Diploma and a Master’s in Music with Academic Honors. During her education, she was twice selected as Principal oboe for the New York String Orchestra in Carnegie Hall.

In addition to her position with the San Antonio Symphony, Ms. Berg can be found performing with the Olmos Ensemble, Camerata, and the Mid-Texas Symphony both as their principal oboist and as a soloist. Additionally, Jennifer lends her oboe playing to Christ Episcopal Church’s eucharistic services, where she is an active member. Elsewhere, she has been featured as one of Victoria Bach Festival’s New Young Artists, is the Order of the Alamo’s Music Coordinator for the Coronation, and in 2014 she joined the staff of Bocal Majority and Operation Oboe summer camps to help instruct kids in oboe technique and reed making. Ms. Berg is also Professor of Oboe at UTSA and teaches privately out of her own home.

In her free time, Jennifer is a CrossFit athlete, swing dancer, and loves playing with her dog, Dante.

YOSA’s History Remembered and Celebrated: A Tribute to Evelyn Berg (1917-1994)

Evelyn Berg moved to San Antonio from New York in 1968 with her husband, Thomas, who was named President of Friedrich Refrigerators. Evelyn had many interests, especially in the arts, and became involved in the board of directors for the San Antonio Symphony and the Southwest Craft Center.

In 1978, Evelyn was appointed to the YOSA board of directors and served as Board President in 1982. She was instrumental in YOSA’s success as a viable youth orchestra program. She helped develop leadership on the board, find a physical home through collaboration with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, and forge numerous connections with local businesses and philanthropists.

Evelyn established YOSA’s first international tour in 1985. Under the artistic direction of Terence Frazor, YOSA toured Eastern Europe, then still behind the Iron Curtain. A production team from KMOL-TV 4 accompanied the musicians, filming the entire tour in Rumania, Hungary, and Austria. Evelyn and Thomas Berg accompanied the musicians and brought energy and vision to inspire the local community to support this program that launched a tradition of international tours that still exists today.

When Evelyn stepped down from the board in 1987, her accomplishments included a period of tremendous growth for YOSA’s orchestras. In honor of her contributions, she was granted the title “President Emeritus” by the board. Dr. Eugene Dowdy, Director of Orchestral Studies at UTSA, recalls that Evelyn, “provided financial and artistic stability” for YOSA and that, “She made things happen. She was the engine of YOSA for those developmental years.”

Mollie Zachry, community leader and former YOSA Board President, remembers the zest and energy Evelyn applied to her work for YOSA. “She deserves every bit of credit for what the organization became because she had a plan and she wanted it to be an outstanding organization with stellar conductors and teachers. She knew in her heart that those elements would attract more young musicians and grow the organization.”

YOSA did grow. YOSA now serves more than 1,800 young musicians every year through YOSA Summer Symphony Camp, YOSA School Partnerships, and YOSA Orchestras. An alumnus of YOSA orchestras is Evelyn’s and Thomas’ granddaughter, Jennifer Berg, San Antonio Symphony musician.

Jennifer, who performed as principal oboe in the YOSA Philharmonic for three seasons is featured with the YOSA Philharmonic at the May 1, 2016 Gold Series 3: European Rhapsody concert and will join the orchestra on the 11th international tour in July, visiting Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.

Evelyn and Thomas Berg would be very proud to see granddaughter Jennifer performing as a guest artist with the YOSA Philharmonic in the Tobin Center and on tour to Europe.

compiled by Troy Peters David Hinds conducts the Amarillo College Chamber Orchestra and Suzuki Orchestra. His work as a composer shows his experience with student musicians at early levels. His Incantations, published in 2009, is built on a moody, minor key melody, reminiscent of Jewish folk music.

Richard Meyer is not only a widely performed composer of music for young string players, but also teaches middle school orchestra in the Los Angeles suburb of Temple City. His 1999 Shadow Dance is a waltz and a canon (a round, like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”), with different sections of the orchestra playing “follow the leader” with the melody.

Deborah Baker Monday teaches cello and bass in the Logan City School District orchestra program in Utah and is widely known as a composer and arranger for young string ensembles. Shortnin’ Bread Blues is her bluesy adaptation of the popular American tune. Although many people assume Shortnin’ Bread is a traditional Southern folksong, it was actually written in 1900 by James Whitcomb Riley, an Indiana author of poetry for children.

Dutch flutist Frans Vester was a remarkably versatile musician, an early pioneer in “historically informed performance” of Baroque music (in the 1950s) and also a champion of ultramodern composers like Arnold Schoenberg. In Five Pieces for Three Flutes, Vester arranged charming and elegant miniatures by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for young flutists; we will hear two of these pieces today.

Flutist Niccolò Dôthel grew up in the 1720s in Lorraine, a region that freely mixed Germanic and French cultures. He spent most of his musical career in the bustling Tuscan city of Florence, where he performed and composed for decades. His Trio in E minor is a good example of his characteristic blending of the French flute ensemble tradition (in the style of Bosimortier) with more virtuosic elements borrowed from the violin style of Italian Baroque composers like Nardini and Tartini.

A longtime high school band director in Princeton, New Jersey, and a busy flutist, Ricky Lombardo has also been an active composer and arranger for flute ensembles for several decades. His 1995 composition Cedar Ridge is a charming portrait of a campground in northwestern New Jersey where the composer spent time.

Gustav Holst was hospitalized when he wrote his sunny Brook Green Suite in 1933. It was intended for his students at St. Paul’s Girls School where he had taught for two decades. Holst was in a nostalgic mood when he wrote this music, taking the title from the location of his 1901 wedding. He heard the world premiere in March 1934—the final concert he attended before he died in May of the same year.

The prolific German Baroque master Georg Philipp Telemann composed his orchestral suite based on Cervantes’ 1605 novel, Don Quixote, in 1761.

Telemann had just finished writing an opera on the same subject, so he decided to recycle some of the musical themes in a “programme overture,” a set of short pieces gathered together to depict episodes from the novel.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | SPRING CONCERTS Although he was born in Wales, Joseph John Richards spent his childhood in Kansas and was a cornet soloist and conductor with the top circus bands in America from the 1890s through the 1910s. After World War I, Richards conducted municipal and school bands all over the U.S. He wrote Emblem of Unity, the most famous of his more than 300 works, in 1941 for a municipal band in Sterling, Illinois.

English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams knew the hymn tunes of the British Isles better than just about anybody, having edited and collected many of them for the Anglican hymnal. In 1920, he composed three organ preludes based on Welsh hymn tunes; of the three, Rhosymedre quickly became the most popular.

The 19th century Welsh composer J.D. Edwards wrote the original tune, which Vaughan Williams surrounded with lush and expressive countermelodies.

La Tregenda is an intermezzo from Giacomo Puccini’s 1884 opera-ballet Le Villi, based on Slavic legend. According to the legend, when a woman dies of a broken heart, a fairy (or vila) disguised as a beautiful woman will cast a spell over the heart-breaker, who will then be forced to dance himself to death. Puccini evokes this dance with a spirited tarantella.

Minnesota composer John Zdechlik has written a number of successful works for wind bands over the last 45 years. He wrote Chorale and Shaker Dance in 1971, on commission from the Jefferson High School Band of Bloomington, Minnesota, in honor of their conductor, Earl Benson. After its 1972 premiere at the convention of the Music Educators National Conference in Atlanta, the piece became Zdechlik’s most widely performed work. The music is based on the 19th century Shaker song, “Simple Gifts,” which was also famously used by Aaron Copland in his ballet Appalachian Spring.

compiled by Troy Peters Arthur Missal had a long and varied career as composer, violist, and conductor at universities in New Mexico, Mississippi, and Kansas. His tuneful, charming Lake Country Dances were published in 1994, when he was almost 80 years old.

William Hofeldt is one of America’s most successful composers of music for student orchestras. After teaching public school music for 15 years, he began fulltime work as an accountant. Hofeldt composed his Lullaby for violin and piano, later arranging it for string orchestra.

A high school orchestra director in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Kirt Mosier is also a popular and widely performed composer of music for student orchestras. The Dance of Iscariot uses a minor key and descending chromatic scales to capture the menace and villainy of the biblical character, Judas Iscariot.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes German Baroque master Georg Philipp Telemann as the most prolific composer ever, having left behind more than 3,000 works in all. His Concerto Polonois is a work for string orchestra, probably written at some point in the 1730s. The title refers to Polish musical influence, mainly reflected in a mazurka (a Polish dance) that is not on today’s program.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov spent most of his life as an officer in the Russian Imperial Navy. For his Capriccio Espagnol, written in 1887, Rimsky-Korsakov drew on a book of Spanish folk tunes he had picked up during one of his naval voyages. With his detailed knowledge of orchestration, he crafted a brilliant orchestral tour de force, evoking imagined street parties and dances from the northern Spanish region of Asturias.

Franz Schubert had much in common with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of his idols. Both were prodigious talents (having written lots of music while still children), both were stunningly prolific, and both died young (Mozart at 35 and Schubert at 31).

In 1816, 25 years after Mozart’s death, Schubert wrote his Symphony No. 5, his most Mozartean orchestral work. The Fifth Symphony is scored for a smaller orchestra than Schubert usually used, creating a lighter texture, and all four movements abound with melody and energy.

Andy Post, YOSA Symphonic Winds Conductor Andy Post directed bands at Wood, Jackson, and Lopez Middle Schools in North East ISD and is an active consultant, clinician, and adjudicator. He has earned Teacher of the Year, Trinity Prize Distinguished Educator Award for NEISD, Who’s Who of American Teachers, PTA Lifetime Award, and was nominated for Disney National Teacher of the Year. His ensembles consistently earn Sweepstakes Awards at UIL and have been recognized at the Region, Area, and State levels

by Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and nationally by Choice Music National Wind Band Competition. Andy resides in San Antonio with his wife and two sons.

Kenneth Freudigman, YOSA Symphony & YOSA Concertino Strings Conductor Kenneth Freudigman is the co-founder and artistic director of two-time Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble Camerata San Antonio, principal cello of the San Antonio Symphony, a highly respected cello teacher, and conductor of the YOSA Symphony and Concertino Strings orchestras. Ken began his work as YOSA Symphony conductor in 2012.

Kristin Hayes, YOSA Flute Choir Conductor In addition to serving as director of the YOSA Flute Choir, Dr. Kristin Hayes currently teaches flute and music theory at St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake University. She formerly held teaching positions at University of Texas San Antonio and Florida State University. During the summer, she teaches and performs at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and UTSA’s annual Flute Camp. An active performer and clinician, Dr. Hayes has performed and presented at various festivals and conventions, including the National Flute Association Convention, MTNA National Convention, Mid-South Flute Festival, and the Florida Flute Association Convention. She has also performed and held master classes at various institutions throughout North and Central America, and she frequently serves as adjudicator for local, state, regional, and national competitions.

Brenda Johnson, YOSA Sinfonietta Strings Conductor Brenda Johnson is orchestra director at Hector Garcia Middle School (Northside ISD), where she opened the school as founding conductor of the Gladiator Orchestra program. In their first year as a brand new school, the Chamber Orchestra received fourth place in the TMEA Honor Orchestra Competition.

Originally from McAllen, Texas, Mrs. Johnson received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Texas. She began her teaching career with the Plano Independent School District where she received Teacher of the Year for Bowman Middle School in 2009. In 2004, Mrs. Johnson was one of four teachers in Texas to receive the Marjorie Keller Young Music Educator Award from the American String Teacher Association. She has served as secretary and treasurer for TexASTA and is a member of Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and the American String Teacher Association with National School Orchestra Association.

Jonathan Raveneau, YOSA Capriccio Strings Conductor Jonathan Raveneau is a versatile and eclectic musician with specialties range from classical to jazz in both instrumental and vocal genres. Jonathan joined YOSA as conductor in 2010. Jonathan also conducts the Cavatina Orchestra for the Hill Country Youth Orchestras.

Jacobi Caldwell, YOSA Prelude Strings Conductor Jacobi Caldwell, Conductor of YOSA Prelude Strings, earned her Bachelor of Music, String Emphasis, from the University of South Carolina. She studied conducting with David Rudge and participated in the USC Conductor’s Institute. She worked with the South Carolina Phiharmonic Youth Orchestra and the USC String Project. Following that, she taught in public schools, then spent years performing commercially. One of the highlights of her journey was moving to Texas and working with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra. She has gone on to teach at Kerrville ISD and Alamo Heights ISD, winning UIL Sweepstakes at every competition. She is currently teaching in Boerne ISD. Eugene Dowdy, Resident Conductor Eugene Dowdy is professor and director of orchestral studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, conductor of the UTSA Orchestra and Lyric Theatre, and head of instrumental conducting. He also serves as conductor and artistic director for the Symphony of the Hills (Kerrville) and is the founding director of the UTSA String Project. Dr. Dowdy conducted YOSA’s Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1992, was the Interim Philharmonic Conductor in 2000, and named an honorary resident conductor in 2002. He researched and wrote YOSA’s history for his doctoral essay at the University of Iowa in 1995 and is a past president of TODA and TexASTA. 23
