YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | FALL CONCERTS

YOSA musicians number more than 1,800 and come from more than 169 schools in 19 school districts.

YOSA musicians are ethnically diverse — 61% representing ethnic and racial minorities and 39% Caucasian. More than 1/3 of YOSA musicians receive tuition assistance; more than 65% receive free programs through community partnerships.

The Orchestras

More than 480 musicians are arranged into 8 orchestras with weekly rehearsals and 10 concerts annually.

Musicians with one-to-two years of playing experience begin in YOSA Prelude Strings.

As their music skills progress and improve, they may graduate into Capriccio Strings, Sinfonietta Strings and Concertino Strings. YOSA Flute Choir, Symphony and Symphonic Winds offer opportunities for string, woodwind, brass and percussion musicians.

The most experienced young musicians in the region perform with the YOSA Philharmonic, playing professional-level repertoire in premier venues here and abroad, and collaborate regularly with internationally renowned soloists and composers.

The YOSA Philharmonic has represented San Antonio on 10 international tours, most recently Québec in 2014. In 2016, the YOSA Philharmonic will perform in central Europe.

Summer Symphony Camp

Each summer, more than 240 students convene for a two-week day camp on the campus of Saint Mary’s Hall with some of San Antonio’s finest music teachers and professional musicians as faculty. YOSA has offered summer camp since 1985; the program has expanded to include woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

School Partnerships

YOSA is committed to working with public and private schools throughout greater San Antonio. Some school partnerships involve classroom and school visits by YOSA faculty and staff. YOSA’s most comprehensive school partnerships are with the Roosevelt High School Compact in NEISD and the Edgewood Fine Arts Academy in EISD in a program called YOSA MÁS:Music At School.

The seven schools of the Roosevelt Compact, a project involving NEISD’s Roosevelt High School and two middle schools and four elementary schools that feed Roosevelt High, is funded by Rackspace. This school partnership includes extensive interaction between YOSA staff, teachers, and young musicians.

The Edgewood Independent School District partnership includes an after-school program at two elementary schools, and additional teaching resources at the middle school orchestra with plans to expand to high school.

Our History

YOSA is a successor to the city’s first community-wide youth orchestra, which was created

by SAISD in 1949.

In recent years, YOSA has expanded its reach from 483 musicians in 2008 to more than 1,800 in 2015.

YOSA is a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

The mission of Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, is to enhance education, enrich the community and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing and fun environment that is equally accessible to all youth.

Children of all ages are welcome at all YOSA concerts. Letter from the Board Chair Welcome to YOSA’s 2015/16 season. This year will be full of exciting performances, including our second year as a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Since 1949, YOSA has provided San Antonio youth with an opportunity to cultivate their classical music talents. Today, our board, staff, and community continue to provide a path for all young musicians to access this premier orchestral experience.

The last few years have seen tremendous growth in the number of students YOSA serves. More than 1,800 young musicians from 169 public and private schools from 19 different school districts participate in YOSA programs. We also serve a growing number of home schooled musicians and have seen our ethnic diversity evolve to match that of the city. I appreciate the hard work of the staff, faculty, and my fellow board members in making this happen, and sincerely thank all YOSA parents and donors who have supported this effort.

This year, the YOSA Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan for the next five years. This plan continues YOSA’s focus on providing premier orchestral experiences for the youth of San Antonio. As more young musicians participate in YOSA, the staff and board will explore how to best promote musical excellence and transformative experiences while maintaining a model that is programmatic and financially sustainable.

YOSA continues its musical partnerships with Edgewood Independent School District and the seven schools of the Roosevelt High School Cluster. Under the umbrella of YOSA MÁS:Music At School, these programs offer resources to school music programs at no cost to the students or school districts.

YOSA changes kids’ lives through music. This is possible thanks to the support of our donors and friends. Each October, YOSA holds an event called STOP! And Feel the Music that combines food, fun, and the YOSA Pop-up Orchestra.

This year the event will take place on October 24 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Valero Energy Corporation’s Terrace Room. Tickets are available at www.yosa.org.

After the success of the OK Computer Live event last June, YOSA will continue this benefit concert series on March 14, 2016 with Abbey Road Live. TROY PETERS, Music Director

Troy Peters has been Music Director of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) since 2009. He has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Vermont Mozart Festival. He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College. He has also gained international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock musicians, including Blind Pilot, Jon Anderson (of the band Yes), and Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish), with whom he worked on two albums on Elektra Records.

Peters conducted the world premiere recording of Daron Hagen’s Masquerade with violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, on Bridge Records. Among the other soloists with whom he has collaborated are Branford Marsalis, Midori, Edgar Meyer, and Richard Stoltzman. His work has been the subject of national media attention from CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, Symphony, and The New Yorker. Awarded a Vermont Arts Council Citation of Merit in 2009, he has also been honored with eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music and has conducted more than three-dozen world premieres. A popular lecturer, he has presented pre-concert talks for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and San Antonio Symphony.

Peters is also active as a composer, where his honors include the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and grants from Meet the Composer and the Rockefeller Foundation.

He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, where his primary compositional mentors were Ned Rorem and George Crumb. Born in 1969 in Greenock, Scotland (of American parents), Peters grew up in Tacoma, Washington, and lives in San Antonio with his wife and two children.

compiled by Troy Peters Sibelius: Karelia Overture, Op. 10 Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) wrote theatrical incidental music throughout his career; Karelia, composed for a historical tableau vivant staged by the Viipuri Student Association in November 1893, was among the earliest.

Viipuri, the main city of the province of Karelia, was an important locus of Finnish cultural and political strength. In a surprising twist, this seat of 19th-century Finnish nationalism sits in Russian territory today (renamed Vyborg). Sibelius had made a pilgrimage to Karelia in the summer of 1892, collecting local folk tunes. Although he did not quote these Finnish folk tunes, their influence is palpable in the Karelia Overture (and in the three pieces of the Karelia Suite, Op. 11). The overture, which also introduces themes heard in the other movements of the suite, depicts the grandeur of Viipuri’s medieval castle, built in the 13th century.

Ludwig: Saturn Bells David Ludwig (born 1972) is one of the most widely performed American composers of his generation. He has written for many prominent artists and ensembles, including pianist Jonathan Biss, violinist Jaime Laredo, eighth blackbird, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Carnegie Hall. Ludwig is on the composition faculty of Philadelphia’s renowned Curtis Institute of Music, where he also serves Dean of Artistic Programs and directs the Curtis 20/21 Contemporary Music Ensemble. Of Saturn Bells, the composer writes: For a long time astronomers have observed spiraling shapes appearing across Saturn’s glorious icy rings; but only recently did they find out their source. The planet vibrates like a lonely bell in outer space. Those vibrations scatter across the surface of the rings making intricate, seemingly random patterns. Why Saturn rings is still not known—but on our planet earthquakes cause the world to resonate for days on end. I was so inspired thinking of the rings of Saturn; I first saw them when I was a kid at summer camp. One of the parents brought a high power telescope and we got about half a minute each to look through it. I was so taken by those rings, and the little stars floating around the planet, which I later found out were some of its many moons. But to come clean, I can’t help but think my unconscious mind was at work while I was writing Saturn Bells. I wrote the piece for my wife, Bella Hristova, who was at that point still my fiancée. Thoughts of Rings and Bella really couldn’t have been too far removed from the process… Saturn Bells begins with a resonating chord that returns throughout the piece, imagining the ringing of the entire planet as a catalyst for the spiraling lines of the solo violin. The soloist takes a spin around the solar system, only to come back to massive Saturn, ringing like a cosmic cathedral bell at the climax–followed by the vast unanswered questions of space and a canopy of stars.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | FALL CONCERTS Barber: Violin Concerto, Op. 14 Like David Ludwig, Samuel Barber (1910-1981) was closely associated with the Curtis Institute of Music, where he was a member of the very first class of students when he was only 14 years old. Barber’s Violin Concerto was commissioned

by Philadelphia soap magnate Samuel Fels in 1939 for his adopted son, Iso Briselli, who had also been Barber’s classmate at Curtis. By the time Barber finished the concerto, Fels and Briselli—who had been delighted with the first two movements but were skeptical of the finale—withdrew from the commission. Albert Spalding was the violin soloist in the 1941 premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the concerto went on to become one of the most widely performed American orchestral works.

The gorgeous opening movement is full of expansive melodies and rich orchestral colors. The second movement, Andante, is similarly lush, beginning with a beautiful oboe melody. Both movements reflect Barber’s vocal upbringing; his aunt, Louise Homer, was a noted contralto at the Metropolitan Opera, and Barber was a fine singer himself. The finale, by contrast, is a relentless toccata, full of irregular rhythms and dissonances reminiscent of Bartók, Prokofiev, and other European modernists of the 1930s.

Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78 “Organ” Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a virtuoso organist, winning first prize in organ at the Paris Conservatory in 1851, before he had reached his 16th birthday. His “Organ” Symphony, however, is not a display piece for the organist, but a brilliantly scored symphonic work that includes prominent parts for organ and piano four-hands, both unusual members of the orchestra in the late 19th century. SaintSaëns conducted the 1886 premiere in London, where he was hugely popular as conductor, pianist, and composer.

Although Saint-Saëns came to be regarded as somewhat old-fashioned by the time the 20th century rolled around, his Third Symphony has an especially innovative formal structure. Saint-Saëns condenses the typical four-movement symphonic form into two large, hybrid movements. After a brief, slow introduction, the first movement combines the traditional opening allegro with an especially beautiful slow movement, the arrival of which is heralded by the first entry of the organ. The second movement opens with a spirited scherzo; again, the organ enters to usher in the final section of the movement, this time a brilliant finale.

(The finale’s main tune, by the way, has been reused in film scores and even a British pop song, perhaps most notably as the main theme of the 1995 family film, Babe.)

Saint-Saëns dedicated the “Organ” Symphony to the memory of Franz Liszt, who died in June of 1886, shortly after the symphony’s London premiere. Liszt had espoused the concept of cyclical thematic transformation, the extended development and variation of a single motivic idea across all the movements or sections of a work. Following Liszt’s model, Saint-Saëns masterfully weaves a single theme throughout this symphony with great imagination and flair.

Acclaimed for her passionate, powerful performances, beautiful sound, and compelling command of her instrument, violinist Bella Hristova is a young musician with a growing international career as a soloist and recording artist. The Strad has praised, “Every sound she draws is superb,” and The Washington Post noted that she is “a player of impressive power and control.” Ms. Hristova’s 20152016 season features a mix of concerto, recital and chamber music performances, as well as educational outreach activities. She showcases her wide-ranging repertoire this season, as she performs over ten different concertos, from Barber and Kevin Puts to Sibelius and Mozart, as well as the world premiere of a

Bella Hristova is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant, First Prize in the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, First Prize in the 2007 Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand, and Laureate of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. She made her New York debut in the Young Concert Artists Series at Merkin Concert Hall and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and at the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston. She was awarded YCA’s Helen Armstrong Violin Fellowship, and for three seasons, she has been honored with the Gordon and Harriet Greenfield Foundation Artist Management Fellowship of YCA. Born in Pleven, Bulgaria to Russian and Bulgarian parents, Ms. Hristova began violin studies at the age of six. At twelve, she participated in master classes with Ruggiero Ricci at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 2003, she entered the Curtis Institute of Music, where she worked with Ida Kavafian (YCA Alumna) and studied chamber music with Steven Tenenbom. She received her Artist Diploma with Jaime Laredo at Indiana University in 2010. Ms. Hristova plays a 1655 Nicolò Amati violin, once owned by the violinist Louis Krasner.

ROBERT BREWER, organist

Robert Brewer, serves as Collaborative Pianist, an Interim Instructor of organ and harpsichord, and Opera Coach at UTSA; Instructor of organ and harpsichord at the University of St. Thomas, Houston; and Organist of Temple Beth-El, San Antonio. He was Organist and Choirmaster of St. David’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio from 2011-2014.

Mr. Brewer was educated at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Rice University, and the University of Houston. He received a Masters in organ performance from Indiana University where he studied organ with professor Marilyn Keiser. As a pianist and chamber musician, Mr. Brewer worked as an Opera Coach at Houston Grand Opera and also served on the faculty of Rice University as Guest Artist in Opera Studies.

Born in Korea in 1974, Soon Hee Newbold grew up in Maryland and has a thriving career as a violinist, conductor, and even actress. She is best known, however, as a composer of orchestral works for students. In 2004, she wrote The Russian Music Box for young string orchestra, inspired by the sounds of Russian folk music.

In 1904, Mykola Leontovych composed Shchedryk, a song for the New Year celebration based on folk chant from his native Ukraine. In the original text, a swallow flies into a household to sing of wealth that will come the following spring. After the Ukrainian National Chorus performed the song at Carnegie Hall in 1921, new English lyrics were attached and the song became a popular Christmas carol under the title Carol of the Bells.

John Caponegro directed school orchestras from elementary to high school for more than 40 years in New York. His work as a composer shows his tremendous experience with student musicians at every level. His Shoe Symphony, published in 1991, has become a classic for young string players, with its entertaining use of rhythmic foot stomping and shuffling.

In 1721, the great German baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach put together a set of six concertos for various instruments as a gift to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg. These six pieces, known as the Brandenburg Concertos, came to be recognized widely as the pinnacle of baroque instrumental music. One of the most popular of the set, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is energetic, driving, and lively.

Soon Hee Newbold’s output for young string players is vast, and our next work is another of her compositions. Inspired by the long tradition of string music drawing on Hungarian dances and gypsy styles, Newbold wrote A Gypsy Tale for orchestras in the West Des Moines (Iowa) Community Schools in 2005.

In his Symphony No. 2, composed in 1872, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky employed authentic folk tunes from the Ukraine, a region sometimes known as “Little Russia” in the 19th century. Tchaikovsky wrote down the tunes in his sketchbook after hearing Ukrainian peasants sing them near his family’s vacation home. The rollicking finale, based on a tune called “The Crane,” became especially popular with other Russian composers, who thought Tchaikovsky had created a distinctly Russian musical triumph.

A high school orchestra director in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Kirt Mosier is also a popular and widely performed composer of music for student orchestras. His Two Scenes from the Hollow is based on Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The first portrait shows us the gangly protagonist, Ichabod Crane, out for a walk.

Keiko Yamada’s Sunayama is a beautiful setting of a haunting Japanese folk song, featuring solo string quartet juxtaposed with the full string orchestra.

When Camille Saint-Saëns was only eleven years old, he challenged his audience at a Paris concert to name any of the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas, which he would then play from memory. Although he went on to become a

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | FALL CONCERTS revered elder statesman of French music, he never lost his youthful sense of humor and loved showing off. His popular tone poem, Danse Macabre, portrays Death playing his fiddle as skeletons dance on Halloween night.

Bob Lipton teaches middle school orchestra in San Jose, California, and regularly plays tuba with orchestras around the San Francisco Bay Area. His recent work, El Gaucho, is an engaging dance for string orchestra, incorporating tango and Latin rhythms.

Karl King made his name as a composer in the 1910s, when he toured with various circus bands and wrote the most famous circus march of all time, Barnum & Bailey’s Favorite. King went on to write more than 200 marches; in Circus Days (1944), King looks back nostalgically on his youthful travels with circus bands.

Actor James Dean was 24 years old when he died in a car accident in 1955.

Dean had only acted in three movies before he died, but his incendiary performances and his untimely death made him one of the biggest movie stars of the 1950s. Wisconsin composer Larry Daehn, who was 16 years old when James Dean died, wrote As Summer Was Just Beginning in 1994, as a tribute to the memory of this American icon.

Australian composer Percy Grainger spent part of his life in England and eventually became an American citizen. Grainger wrote, “In agricultural districts in various parts of England, teams of ‘Morris Men,’ decked out with jingling bells and other finery, can still be seen dancing to traditional dance tunes played on the fiddle or on the pipe and tabor (a sort of drum and fife).” Mock Morris is not an arrangement of traditional tunes, but an original composition inspired by the spirit and style of Morris dancers.

With his two landmark suites for wind band, written in 1909 and 1911, Gustav Holst became one of the first major composers to compose seriously for the band. The Second Suite in F is built around English folk songs, mostly from the coastal county of Hampshire. The opening March weaves together three tunes, including a Morris dance melody. The Song Without Words is based on the romantic ballad “I’ll Love My Love.” In Song of the Blacksmith, Holst creates a jaunty scherzo with rhythmic brass writing and metrical surprises. The finale, Fantasia on the Dargason, cleverly juxtaposes a 16th century English dance tune with the beloved English folk tune “Greensleeves.”

Czech composer Leoš Janáček spent decades studying Czech folk song in the hope of creating a new musical style inspired by the rhythm and inflection of Czech speech. His landmark operas may be his greatest achievement, but he also composed dozens of piano miniatures that celebrate Czech culture.

Janáček wrote Music for Club Swinging Exercises for the piano in 1893, commemorating a 19th century calisthenics fad; Illinois composer Elaine Fine arranged it for string orchestra in 2011.

Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen, who lived most of his life in Denmark, spent much of the 1870s composing and arranging music linked to various Scandinavian countries. For his Two Swedish Folk Melodies, he arranged two of Sweden’s most beloved melodies for string orchestra. The first, “All Under the Heaven’s Hold,” is a song of lost love. The second, “You Ancient, You Hale, You Mountainous North,” went on to become the Swedish national anthem, although it had not yet achieved that status when Svendsen made his setting in 1878.

Henry Purcell wrote incidental music for the 17th century London theatre scene; much like today’s film scores, incidental music supported and intensified the action on stage. Abdelazer, or The Moor’s Revenge, was one of Purcell’s biggest theatrical hits, opening just a few months before his death in 1695. The Rondeau from Abdelazer became even better known after Benjamin Britten used it in 1946 as the basis for the his brilliant variations in The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Since then, it has cropped up more than once as the theme for radio or television programs, especially in England.

The beloved folk song Shenandoah probably originated among Canadian and American fur trappers in the late 18th century. By the early 19th century, it was popular among boatmen on the Missouri River, and from there it spread to the Mississippi River and on to American clipper ships that took it around the world.

Memphis church organist Sondra Tucker made this lovely arrangement for flute choir.

Although Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi are better known today, German composer Georg Philipp Telemann was widely regarded as one of the best during his lifetime. He was also among the most prolific composers who ever lived, cranking out more than three thousand compositions in his 86 years. La Caccia (“The Hunt”) is the Italian flutist Giovanni Gatti’s flute choir arrangement of a Telemann concerto that was originally written for four solo violins.

Contrary to legend, Georges Bizet did not die heartbroken at the failure of Carmen. In fact, the opera enjoyed its 33rd performance on the night Bizet died of a heart attack—his initial disappointment at the opera’s unfavorable critical reception had already been assuaged by its popularity with audiences. The Entr’acte from Carmen preceded Act III in the opera and beautifully highlights the melodic strength of the flute.

Although The Nutcracker is probably the most popular ballet in the world today, its original 1892 production was unsuccessful. In fact, it only became a perennial international favorite in the 1950s, after ballet companies in San Francisco and New York began to present it every Christmas. In the “Dance of the Reed Flutes,” Danish shepherdesses dance at the Sugar Plum Fairy’s castle, as part of a cavalcade of sweets from around the world.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF SAN ANTONIO | FALL CONCERTS Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa, a contemporary of Mozart, had a successful career writing for opera houses throughout Europe in the 1780s and ‘90s. His 1792 opera, The Secret Marriage, was his biggest hit; although it is a rarity today, it was a staple of the operatic repertoire throughout the 19th century. The overture shows not only his stylistic affinity with Mozart, but also his influence on Rossini, who grew up idolizing Cimarosa.

Gabriel Fauré originally wrote his Pavane for solo piano, but it became most popular in this 1887 version for orchestra (with optional chorus). Fauré’s music reimagines a Spanish Renaissance dance form as a haunting Belle Époque processional, featuring beautiful solos for the flute and clarinet.

By the mid-20th-century, Eric Coates would be known as the King of British Light Music, composing several charming orchestral miniatures that were familiar to British audiences through frequent radio broadcasts and concert performances. When Coates wrote his Miniature Suite in 1911, however, he was an unknown viola player in the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, which premiered the suite in London. These three charming pieces quickly launched Coates into the heart of England’s musical life, renowned as both a composer and conductor for more than four decades.

Andy Post, YOSA Symphonic Winds Conductor Andy Post directed bands at Wood, Jackson, and Lopez Middle Schools in North East ISD and is an active consultant, clinician, and adjudicator. He has earned Teacher of the Year, Trinity Prize Distinguished Educator Award for NEISD, Who’s Who of American Teachers, PTA Lifetime Award, and was nominated for Disney National Teacher of the Year. His ensembles consistently earn Sweepstakes Awards at UIL and have been recognized at the Region, Area, and State levels

by Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and nationally by Choice Music National Wind Band Competition. Andy resides in San Antonio with his wife and two sons.

Kenneth Freudigman, YOSA Symphony & YOSA Concertino Strings Conductor Kenneth Freudigman is the co-founder and artistic director of two-time Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble Camerata San Antonio, principal cello of the San Antonio Symphony, a highly respected cello teacher, and conductor of the YOSA Symphony and Concertino Strings orchestras. Ken began his work as YOSA Symphony conductor in 2012.

Martha Long, YOSA Flute Choir Conductor Martha Long joined the San Antonio Symphony as principal flute in October 2012. Martha received her Bachelor’s degree from the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where she studied with Jim Walker, and continued her studies at the New England Conservatory as a student of Elizabeth Rowe. She was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2010 and 2011 and returned as a New Fromm Player in 2012 and 2015, focusing on the performance of new compositions.

Martha has also performed with the Colorado, Fort Collins (CO), and New World Symphonies. Martha began her work with YOSA Flute Choir in 2013.

Brenda Johnson, YOSA Sinfonietta Strings Conductor Brenda Johnson is orchestra director at Hector Garcia Middle School (Northside ISD), where she opened the school as founding conductor of the Gladiator Orchestra program. In their first year as a brand new school, the Chamber Orchestra received fourth place in the TMEA Honor Orchestra Competition. Each year, both varsity and non-varsity groups have received Sweepstakes ratings at UIL Concert/Sight-reading, and the program has grown to 200 students. Originally from McAllen, Texas, Mrs. Johnson received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from 22

She began her teaching career with the Plano Independent School District where she received Teacher of the Year for Bowman Middle School in 2009. In 2004, Mrs. Johnson was one of four teachers in Texas to receive the Marjorie Keller Young Music Educator Award from the American String Teacher Association. She has served as secretary and treasurer for TexASTA and is a member of Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and the American String Teacher Association with National School Orchestra Association.

Jonathan Raveneau, YOSA Capriccio Strings Conductor Jonathan Raveneau is a versatile and eclectic musician with specialties ranging from classical to jazz in both instrumental and vocal genres. Jonathan joined YOSA as conductor in 2010. Jonathan also conducts the Cavatina Orchestra for the Hill Country Youth Orchestras.

Jacobi Caldwell, YOSA Prelude Strings Conductor Jacobi Caldwell, Conductor of YOSA Prelude Strings, earned her Bachelor of Music, String Emphasis, from the University of South Carolina. She studied conducting with David Rudge and participated in the USC Conductor’s Institute. She worked with the South Carolina Phiharmonic Youth Orchestra and the USC String Project. Following that, she taught in public schools, then spent years performing commercially.

One of the highlights of her journey was moving to Texas and working with the Hill Country Youth Orchestra. She has gone on to teach at Kerrville ISD and Alamo Heights ISD, winning UIL Sweepstakes at every competition. She is currently teaching in Boerne ISD. Eugene Dowdy, Resident Conductor Eugene Dowdy is professor and director of orchestral studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, conductor of the UTSA Orchestra and Lyric Theatre, and head of instrumental conducting. He also serves as conductor and artistic director for the Symphony of the Hills (Kerrville) and is the founding director of the UTSA String Project. Dr. Dowdy conducted YOSA’s Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1992, was the Interim Philharmonic Conductor in 2000, and named an honorary resident conductor in 2002. He researched and wrote YOSA’s history for his doctoral essay at the University of Iowa in 1995 and is a past president of TODA and TexASTA.
