YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND ALWAYS My son just left for his freshman year at college in the Texas Hill Country. While he’s less than an hour away in Kerrville, the Family Fun story this month brought back a flood of memories. It seemed like only yesterday when he slept in the carrier beside me while I dined out. Almost overnight, he was wiggling out of his seat. Although comfort food is often associated with Southern cuisine, in San Antonio, comfort food comes in many satisfying permutations. More than ever, we could all use a little something special to brighten our spirits! BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP CO. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., located on the River Walk next to Navarro Street, is a famous national chain, which got its name from the even more famous movie, Forrest Gump. They aim to emulate that same down-home look and feel of the movie’s Alabama setting. Not only will you find finger-licking good comfort food, but an array of memorabilia and still-photos from the film as well as reproductions of script pages, storyboards, and costumes While all the food is finger-lickin’ southern delish, the popular dishes include the Shrimp Shack Mac & Cheese, a gooey delight made with three kinds of cheese; Forrest’s Seafood Feast, featuring both fish and chips and fried shrimp; and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae topped with both chocolate and caramel sauce, peanuts and whipped cream. Plan for a long winter’s nap after dining here! IDA CLAIRE Another southern-style popular restaurant is Ida Claire. Located fifteen minutes north of the River Walk at the Quarry Market, they fancy themselves a Southern-style gastropub, with a menu designed to be familiar, yet unexpected. You will find many recognizable dishes as well as items with a new and exciting, worldly twist, often using premium ingredients sourced locally.

Right now, folks are loving their curbside kit featuring bone-in fried chicken, pimento mac-n-cheese, and their buttery biscuits, made from scratch twice daily. With their expansive patio seating outdoors, including an air-conditioned Airstream trailer, guests are also dining in on their super crispy buttermilk-brined fried chicken, as well as shrimp and grits and the ever-popular chicken and waffles. Brunch on the weekends comes with a whole new list of yumminess to choose from, including the short rib and waffle benedict and a Southern-inspired quiche. Throw in a few cocktails, such as their New Orleans-style Hurricane or their gin mojito, called Mint Condition, and comfort just turned into an all-day affair. PANCHITO’S Of course, most San Antonians agree that nothing screams comfort food more than Tex-Mex. A neighborhood staple in Olmos Park for 40 years, Panchito’s family-owned and operated Mexican restaurant has been serving up some of the most incredible scratch-made TexMex you can find in the city, including house-made flour and corn tortillas. All of the recipes are family recipes that started with Grandmother Lupita, and everything is made fresh daily. a hearty bowl of their caldo (soup), which comes with either chicken or beef, and a variety of veggies such as zucchini, corn, potatoes, carrots and a savory broth that somehow magically cures all ills. Plates of cheesy enchiladas, such as the verde chicken and chicken mole, hit the spot as well. Typically, you can enjoy live music every Wednesday through Sunday features, including the iconic mariachis on Thursday and Friday nights. Accompanied by a few frozen mango margaritas or watermelon agua frescas, it’s the perfect place to perk up. OUTLAW KITCHENS For an intimate dinner in a homey yet elegant atmosphere, Outlaw Kitchens is simply a gem created by a husband and wife team and located in a charming stone cottage in the Alta Vista neighborhood, a short jaunt from downtown. With an on-site garden and a newly renovated covered patio, it’s guaranteed to blast those blues. Chef Paul Sartory has had a long, storied career that includes teaching at the Culinary Institute of America. The menu is eclectic, seasonal Americana, and international-centric foods. It’s also quite small, usually a 3-course prix fixe, that can change from day-to-day. To find out what’s available, check out the menu online and make reservations ahead of time. Chef Sartory hones in on a few choice dishes that he considers comfort food, including the pork schnitzel and a chicken fried steak unlike any you’ve ever tasted. It started as a dare from one of his servers and ended up being one of the most popular dishes they have ever served at the restaurant. A heavenly crème gravy sauce covers Angus top sirloin, along with some “cute” biscuits. Dinner usually ends with one of their signature desserts, such as a slice of flourless chocolate cake or Peggy’s unforgettable coconut cream pie. Truly, nothing makes you feel more at home, or the home you wish you had than an evening out at Outlaw Kitchens. CENTRAL MARKET For a quick fix, pop into Central Market, located just north of downtown along Broadway. This upscale grocery store is filled from top to bottom with just about any comfort food you can imagine and then some. We suggest a visit to their bakery, a gluten lovers’ dream, where you can find everything from freshbaked bread, chocolate croissants, and muffins to gorgeously crafted whole cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, and cream puffs. Luke Lalley
Channeling his inner Ringo, little Luke Lalley, well into his terrible twos, was delighted to find chopsticks make awesome drumsticks. Biting his lip and banging on the table, Luke rocked the restaurant till Mommy wrestled the chopsticks from his little-drummer-boy hands. Even though his family was at a table on an outside deck, a safe six feet from others, Luke’s musical talents were clearly annoying diners. They’d come to enjoy sushi and sip wine at a quiet restaurant, not hear a drum solo. Sure one day Luke may wow Simon Cowell on “America’s Got Talent,” but not today. When Luke isn’t busy being Ringo Starr, he turns into Tarzan, swinging from cabinet doors and climbing on the couch. The kids aren’t exactly restaurant-ready. So what are their exasperated parents to do? Find childfriendly outdoor dining spots where a kid can be a kid, and Luke can run, climb, slide, jump, and beat his little chest like Tarzan, or drum-like a Beatle.
Big'z Burger Joint
Unfortunately, for the time being, some popular restaurants with patios aren’t open or have temporarily dismantled the playgrounds. However, young families will be happy to find several casual spots can still accommodate not only safe social distancing but wild-animal-like children. Some will even let you bring your pooch. Here are a few Tarzan-friendly places where kids can play, and no one will give Mom and Dad the stink-eye.

BIG’Z BURGER JOINT Lukey loves this Big’z enormous AstroTurf lawn where he and his brother can kick a soccer ball, kick a football, toss a Frisbee, and run, jump, play and even bang on the picnic table without bothering anybody. Big’z also has fun fat chalk and a chalkboard, big televisions, and clean picnic tables set at least six feet apart. There, families can enjoy casual counter-service cuisine under a shady umbrella on a sprawling deck. With a full kids’ menu, including hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken strips, and more, Big’z also has crayons and butcher paper on the table so kids can color. With well-planned safety precautions in place, at Big’z Burger Joint, Mom and dad can have a laid-back night out while their boys and girls get to be wild, carefree kids. Closed Mondays. Big’z has two locations. DOG & PONY GRILL This fun, laid-back big Texas-sized restaurant northwest of town in Boerne not only has a large shaded playground for the kids, but it also has a basketball court, a dance floor, and a live-music stage. Of course, there are also plenty of picnic tables spaced safely apart. Sprawling over two-acres, Dog & Pony Grill offers kids a place to run and play while parents enjoy good eats and live music every Saturday night. Families with pooches will love the fact that doggies can run free, for a small fee, in the Dog & Pony Dog Park. Call or visit the website for
Families, keep these great kid-friendly restaurants in mind in the future. Although at this writing, these are now still open for carry-out and outside dining, their playgrounds are temporarily closed. With shady patios, decks, and kid-friendly casual eats, these spots are eager to bring back family fun just as soon as owners deem it safe. Some have temporarily dismantled their playscapes so they can clean them and build them again, better than ever when the time is right.

LA HACIENDA DE LOS BARRIOS This popular San Antonio family-owned Los Barrios family-owned restaurant has often garnered awards for Best Outdoor Dining. They call their shady outdoor area “dining salons,” where folks can enjoy a large patio, live music, and a big fenced-in playground that parents can see from the tables. Kids love the big shady Oak trees and twinkling string lights. There’s also a safety gate around the playscape area and lots of room for kids to run wild while parents keep watch and enjoy fine Tex-Mex fare and cold drinks. There’s also a kids’ menu, so everybody fills up, plays, and stays happy. Closed Mondays LA HACIENDA SCENIC LOOP The newest member of the Los Barrios Family of restaurants, the location outside 1604 on Boerne Stage Road, also has a wooden playscape next to the family-friendly patio. It’s not as large as the location listed above. For nearly four decades, Los Barrios and its sister restaurants have been a staple in the
Tex-Mex culinary community here. At both locations, there is music on the weekends. The restaurants also offer to-go margaritas and bar fare. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. VIOLA’S VENTANAS A landmark of Tex-Mex cuisine in northwest San Antonio, drawing upon award-winning recipes perfected by Viola Barrios, Viola’s Ventanas is a casual family-friendly spot. While the authentic original family Tex-Mex dishes are the draw for parents, kids love the playscape set below big shade trees, fenced in and near the patio, so parents can watch them play. Everyone can enjoy a family night here when the breezes blow, and lights twinkle in the trees. Closed Mondays.

In the Time of Covid-19, “house-peeping" — driving through neighborhoods full of interesting homes— has gotten a big boost. It’s fun to see how other folks live, and San Antonio has dozens of fascinating communities for scenic suburban tours. One of the most fun—and often overlooked by visitors—is ALAMO HEIGHTS.
This tiny township of just 2.14 square miles has a larger-than-life mystique. Old money settled here, on steep, twisting roads shaded with ancient stands of live oak. Landlocked by the surrounding City of San Antonio with its stellar public school system, the “City of Beauty and Charm” incorporated in the early 1920s, when it was already a bustling neighborhood. Many of the homes here have marked their 100th birthdays; others have been bulldozed for bigger houses as real estate values have steadily soared. It is considered one of THE places to live. The residents, dubbed—“09-ers”—are a reference to the zip code, 78209. Let’s get one thing straight—despite a local suburban myth, Davy Crockett did NOT live in Alamo Heights—a Texas-sized tall tale perpetrated by zealous real estate developers in early 1900s. In fact, Davy Crockett famously died at the Alamo in 1836, before Alamo Heights was a glint in a developer’s eye.
metal sculpture that fronts the top of the Arts Building facing Broadway is a recent addition by local public artist Cacky Brawley. At night, the backlit art piece changes colors. Just a block or so beyond that heading north, keep an eye out for what may seem like a thatch-roofed bus stop. This landmark faux bois (“false wood”) trolley stop (now bus stop) crafted by famed Mexican cement artist Dionicio Rodriguez is also in the National Register, as are several more of his notable pieces in the area. Start house-peeping in earnest on Patterson Avenue, a wide boulevard where homes range from modern, with an entrance dramatically splashed with hot pink and yellow (519) to a Spanish mission-style mansion (406). Modern Tudor, Craftsman bungalows, French Chateau style, streamlined ultra-modern white stucco blocks, and Spanish hacienda-style – you name it, you’ll see it in Alamo Heights.
Chock-full of diverse architecture and points of interest, you can hit most of the highlights listed here in a day or less. Let Google maps provide directions though streets that sometimes turn maze-like – and for satellite views that will reveal the sprawling estates behind some seemingly modest facades,
Patterson curves into a crescent and ends at The Argyle, the most exclusive private club in town, originally the home of a wealthy horse rancher. Continue straight on Torcido Drive, which winds down the side of the bluff to take you past a string Patterson Ave. home of multi-million-dollar homes. When Torcido completes its curve, it runs back into Patterson, turn right, and go back towards Broadway. Further up Broadway, you might want to stop for sustenance at Rise Up, a local favorite shop featuring frozen “acai bowls.” Streets on either side of the Broadway corridor are packed with interesting homes. To the east, streets with names like Wildrose and Rosemary are delightful drives. To the west, College Boulevard leads back up to the literal heights, to a development built on the site of an old, fortress-like military institute. Near the top of the hill, at Ciruela Street, the new homes begin, but they blend in so well it’s hard to tell. Nearby, Penny Lane, Rockridge, and Castano are packed with interesting houses—check out the antique wooden water tower. While you’re in the neighborhood, make a long loop through the dappled shade that lines La Jara Boulevard, a popular local walking route down to Olmos Basin Park, with its centuries-old live oaks, modern trails, and old stone structures. It’s hard to believe that just above this serenity, a modern highway exists. These are the charms of Alamo Heights—deep-shaded lanes, towering live oaks, a dance of green canopy webs, good schools, amazing location, and homes with no two alike. CONSERVATION A way of life in San Antonio By Dan R. Goddard

San Antonio is renowned for historic conservation of architectural treasures such as the Spanish Missions. Still, as the population grows and energy demands increase, the city is more committed than ever to conserving natural resources and encouraging sustainability. Recently, San Antonio became one of 10 United States Pioneers for the international CitiesWithNature, which emphasizes protecting nature while ensuring residents and visitors enjoy easy access to nature and the outdoors. Future and current programs include a 90-mile system of hike and bike trails circling the city, buses powered by electricity and compressed natural gas, protecting the tree canopy, using recycled water to irrigate many of the city’s favorite outdoor attractions, sustainable construction utilizing solar power, geothermal wells and other energy-saving methods while protecting more than 150,000 acres of Texas Hill Country land over the Edwards Aquifer, the city’s primary source of water. Joining Los Angeles, Orlando, Pittsburgh, and Santa Fe in the CitiesWithNature platform, Mayor Ron Nirenberg noted San Antonio prioritizes investments that elevate and regenerate the beauty and livability of the community while protecting native species, air, water, and land. His examples included establishing the Bracken Cave Preserve, home to the largest bat colony in the world, and taking the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge to create pollinator gardens for the millions of Monarch butterflies migrating through the city each year. 28 RIO Magazine
The San Antonio Office of Sustainability is committed to enhancing the region’s environment with innovative programs that encourage energy efficiency, community and corporate sustainability, and sustainable transportation. Currently, the office is working to promote, restore, and protect green infrastructure and ecosystems through the SA Climate Ready Plan, to make the city carbon neutral by 2050. Costing almost $200 million so far, the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System has more than 65 miles of trails completed with 14 miles under construction and then another 12 miles needed to form an interconnected ring around the city. The Tree Canopy Preservation & Mitigation Fund encourages native tree preservation while discouraging non-native, invasive species. System is proud to have one of the largest and most diverse conservation programs in the world. SAWS’ direct use of recycled water systems is one of the largest in the U.S. Sewer water is sent to treatment plants where it is cleaned with chemicals to near drinking quality by federal standards. Then the recycled water is sent back out to the community in Purple Pipes. Golf courses around San Antonio thrive on recycled water, including Brackenridge Park, The Quarry, and Oak Hills. Toyota Manufacturing is a big recycled water customer, as is Microsoft and USAA. And when the natural springs that feed the San Antonio River aren’t enough to keep the downtown San Antonio River Walk looking full, recycled water is used to supplement, often introduced into the river through water features. All of the beautiful plants along the River Walk are irrigated with recycled water. The Historic Pearl Brewery also uses recycled water to keep the landscaping fresh at this popular shopping and recreation destination. SAWS promotes several programs to encourage homeowners to transform waterwasting lawns into water-savvy GardenStyle landscapes. SAWS has even gamified learning about water saving. By participating in programs and education activities, customers earn points towards Rewards Coupons redeemable at locally owned businesses for water-saving tools, plants, and rain barrels. VIA Metropolitan Transit now has three electric buses, with another eight due next year, and 370 clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. VIA dedicated its CNG fueling station in 2018. The 10,980 square-foot compressor compound stands as the largest in North America. More than half of VIA’s diesel vehicles have been replaced with CNG buses to date, and a full fleet conversion is planned by 2025. VIA’s CNG program is part of a multi-year, community-driven effort to build a better bus system while significantly reducing vehicle emissions and decreasing operating costs. Sustainable construction is booming in San Antonio. With BuiltSmart Resources, Build SA Green encourages net-zero building, which means zero energy consumption. For example, a 3,900-squarefoot house has a solar photovoltaic installation that generates 110 percent of the home’s energy consumption, meaning the home is regularly pumping power back into the grid. The city-owned electric utility CPS Energy now has about 15,700 customers using solar power. While not quite net-zero, the new headquarters for Credit Human Federal Credit Union aspires to be the city’s most energy-efficient high-rise. On Broadway at Grayson Street, next to the Pearl, the 12-story headquarters has a 1-megawatt rooftop solar system
generating about 70 percent of its power. Innovative are 150 wells dug 300 feet deep to tap into geothermal energy. That deep underground, the temperature is a steady 70 to 75 degrees, energy used to supply 100 percent of the building’s heat and 40 percent of its air conditioning. More than 500 new construction projects around the city are certified under the green building rating system, known as LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Last year, the Will Smith Zoo School at the San Antonio Zoo became the first preschool in the country to earn LEED Platinum. CPS, when finished renovating the former Valero building on McCullough Avenue for its new headquarters, anticipates a 60 percent gain in energy efficiency. On Main Plaza, the 130-year-old City Hall has undergone a $38 million do-over, the first major renovation since a fourth-floor addition in 1927. A WALK IN HEMISFAIR PARK Now, let’s take a walk through the park! Hemisfair has been the place where San Antonio meets for over 50 years and strives to be a place of home no matter where you are from, making it the perfect spot for locals and tourists alike. Containing the city’s history and spirit, it is truly more than a park. Just steps from downtown, you won’t have any trouble finding it. All you have to do is look for the giant Tower of the Americas, which the park sits below.
YANAGUANA GARDEN The first stop is Yanaguana Garden to let the kids (and our inner kid) run wild. This garden opened in 2015 and is a lush wonderland for both kids and adults. Keep an eye out for striking mosaics and sculptures. Kids can choose from the playground or splash pad, while adults can partake in Bocce Ball, cornhole, or giant chess beneath shaded canopies. Get the whole family together for a match of pingpong or foosball. Loser buys paletas later! Play equipment is wheelchair accessible, and there is plenty of space to play a game of catch or frisbee, making your imagination the only limit to the fun.

RECREATION PHOTO OPS If your inner child is less about playtime and more into dress up, then Hemisfair has you covered with amazing photo ops along strolling paths. • The “Wings of Mexico” sculpture by Jorge Marin was given to San Antonio from Mexico City on the city’s 300th birthday and now resides permanently at Hemsifair. The bronze sculpture is a set of standalone wings designed to be interactive. Stand between the wings and ask a friend to snap a pic of you sporting angel wings. You can find it near the Tower of the Americas. • There are murals throughout the park to make amazing Instagram backdrops. Two of our favorites are the bird mural near Yanaguana Garden and the new striking painting on The ‘68 Apartments. You can’t miss them! • Take a photo as you stroll around the base of the Tower of the Americas, where you will find a wide array of fountains.
TOWER OF THE AMERICAS No trip to Hemisfair would be complete without seeing the Tower of the Americas (and you can’t miss it)! This 750-foot observation tower was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World’s Fair and is one of the tallest observation towers in the United States, making the 600-foot Seattle Space Needle look small. (We do everything bigger in Texas!)
