EDITOR’S LETTER Photo by Leonid Furmansky

The Official Magazine of the River Walk

QUALITY AND COMMITMENT The city of San Antonio is a multi-dimensional city, embracing many initiatives such as historic preservation where centuriesold buildings complement contemporary architecture, outdoor recreation and amenities support active lifestyles and responsible development, and an advocacy of the arts encompasses many representations throughout the city. This quality of place is also reflected in its culture and traditions that are celebrated year-round, and all combined make San Antonio a desirable and economically vibrant place to live and visit. This issue covers all of these areas that San Antonio is committed to, not only maintaining, but growing. Art is abounding with museums, galleries and public art. Architectural tours highlight both the old and new, some with very haunted histories. Sports can be enjoyed live or on the big screen. Musical, theatrical and themed venues provide everything from Broadway shows to family-friendly entertainment to thrill rides and whales. A spirited food and beverage industry provides cuisines that are both innovative and traditional, and worthy of San Antonio’s City of Gastronomy designation. And public places are beautifully maintained, hosting exceptional cultural performances that showcase this city’s diverse heritage.

Los Azulejos

BURGERS & WHISKEY by Kimberly A. Suta

There are some things in life that are simply perfect companions, regardless of the permutation, and this is certainly true for the pairing of burgers and whiskey. This month, we’re celebrating these two superheroes. You can enjoy them on their own or together, it doesn’t really matter. Here are some recommendations to get you started on this deliciously unholy union.

The Esquire Tavern

THE ESQUIRE TAVERN The Esquire Tavern, located on E. Commerce next to the River Walk, has it all—burgers and whiskey and a whole array of elevated bar food from Chef Joseph Perez’s scratch kitchen. A seasonal prohibition-style cocktail and spirits menu will make your jaw drop to their gorgeous wooden bar, which happens to be the longest in Texas, not to mention the second oldest in San Antonio. The Esquire Burger is far beyond just a great tavern burger. The ground certified real Wagyu beef is locallysourced from the family-owned farm, Peeler Farms, and is served at your preferred temp on a lightly toasted sesame seed bun, along with sharp cheddar, smoked gouda or American cheese, lettuce, tomato, house dill pickles, house ketchup and Dijon mustard.

There’s nothing like a straight shot of whiskey with a good burger.

There’s nothing like a straight shot of whiskey with a good burger, but if you’re feeling fancy, try the Espresso Yourself cocktail, made with Bonded Bourbon, espresso liqueur, Brazilian banana liqueur, oat milk and chai spice. Head Downstairs to their sexy speakeasy on Friday and Saturday nights, which is situated along the River Walk, and keep an eye out for The Esquire’s new late night bar menu! MR. JUICY For another chef-curated burger but with drive-through access, head to Mr. Juicy, about 10 minutes north of downtown, for a fast burger that’s not

fast food. Chef Andrew Weissman, known for his fine dining, sticks to his roots with an exceptionally scratch-made burger that includes house-baked challah buns topped with poppy seeds. Here, you can go simple or go big with double meat, double cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and if they ask, definitely make it “wet!” This au poivre sauce is a touch of decadent genius that lovingly and messily pulls the burger together. Not to be missed! No whiskey here, so we recommend taking it to go and moving on… RANGER CREEK BREWING & DISTILLING If you’re looking for bottles (or cocktails), you’re in luck! San Antonio has access to a few different distilleries that are making some pretty mind-blowing whiskey, starting with Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling, which is just a jaunt up 35. This award-winning “brewstillery” is known for their handcrafted beer and whiskey that they claim is made with “lots of love, attention and Texas attitude.”

They have several options, which you can buy by the bottle or enjoy on-site. My favorite is the .36 Texas Bourbon, which is handcrafted in small batches and has flavors of caramel, vanilla, maple syrup and oak, but you’ll have to try them all to find your own favorite. They just launched a seductive new spirit—a smoked single malt whiskey that’s distilled from malt mash and finished in used sotol barrels. Check their website for details on tours, tastings and events, like Jazz and Cocktails. You can bet their .36 makes an absolutely mean Old Fashioned.

Devils River Distillery

Rebecca Creek Distillery

Los Azulejos

DEVILS RIVER DISTILLERY Back in the heart of downtown, Devils River Distillery launched in 2017 and has been making some serious headway with their “sinfully smooth” spirits. Named after the river where they source their water, which runs through an underground limestone filtration system, the water is ultra clear and pristine. Their oldest expression of three years is called Distiller’s Select and made with a hundred percent Texas grains. They guarantee this 120 proof whiskey stands up to the richness of even the most naughty burger. It makes for an exceptional Manhattan, along with a quality red vermouth, and a couple of dashes of cherry bitters, served neat or on the rocks. They also make a Coffee Bourbon, which goes nicely in frozen cocktails, such as their Sold My Soul, which is akin to a dairy-free coffee and vanilla milkshake.

Their Texas Ranger whiskey comes in a variety of fun flavors, such as peach, peanut butter and coconut pecan. They offer a bunch of enticing drink recipes on their website, such as a “Peaches and Cream” shot made with Texas Ranger Peach, St. Germain and a dollop of whipped cream. LOS AZULEJOS Finally, you’ll need another burger to balance out all this whiskey, right? Los Azulejos, a local’s favorite Mexican restaurant in Castle Hills, makes one of the most scrumptious burgers we’ve seen in a long time. Their impressive Hamburguesa Mexicana is made with Angus beef and layered with chorizo, ham, housemade guacamole, Oaxaca cheese and a baby spring mix on a Telera bun, a traditional savory Mexican bread.

Currently, you can enjoy five different expressions and a number of come hither cocktails in their tasting room and pre-prohibition style bar, along with live music and yummy sammies, such as slow-roasted pork and sweet peppers.

Go for the burger but go back for the authentic Mexican food with recipes from interior Mexico, including a few inspired fusions. This scratch kitchen is creating some truly unique fare compared to the ubiquitous Tex-Mex restaurants you find all across the city.

REBECCA CREEK DISTILLERY We can’t talk about local whiskeys without mentioning one of the largest craft distilleries in America—Rebecca Creek Distillery, which is up north at Bulverde Road and 281. Open for tastings and tours, they also feature live music and bingo on Wednesdays.

With your burger, the staff recommends ordering a glass of Immortal Columbian rum, which is aged in Jack Daniels barrels and therefore reminiscent of a whiskey, for something a little bit different.

The only whiskey named after a woman, Rebecca Creek Blended Whiskey, more of a bourbon-style whiskey, is considered a great introduction into the whiskey world. It’s super smooth, somewhere between a true bourbon and a Canadian-style whiskey.

The options are endless…whiskey and burgers are just the tip of the iceberg. Go explore our San Antonio eats and drinks! WRITER’S BIO Kimberly A. FAMILY FUN

Special (Not So) Spooky Family Fun October outings sure to please the Great Pumpkin

By Janis Turk

October is a great month in San Antonio, with Halloween being a favorite holiday of many families, especially when the focus is on good, clean fun. With cool autumn evenings, costume parties, fun fall foods, pumpkin patches around town and sweet family traditions—from trick-or-treating on Halloween to watching “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” on television—October is extra special. Here are some frighteningly fun family-outing options this month:

ZOO BOO! AT THE SAN ANTONIO ZOO DAILY THROUGH OCTOBER 30 Each year, the beautiful San Antonio Zoo sponsors a non-scary, family-friendly Halloween event. Cute little ghouls and goblins of all ages are encouraged to don their best costumes for a daily costume contest and a chance to win a Zoo prize pack. Zoo Boo! is a daily October event held inside the Zoo, and it’s included with standard admission and free for Zoo annual pass holders and monthly members. A place for safe, fun trick-or-treating, the Zoo also offers, for a separate fee, a Pumpkin Patch and Pick-aPumpkin events. Bring your own bag for trick-or-treating, but if you forget to, the Zoo will offer reusable, eco-friendly trick-or-treat bags for purchase. Face masks are strongly recommended for outdoor areas for all guests ages 10 and older and will be required for all indoor locations, including restrooms. Besides all the Halloween fun, families will enjoy seeing and interacting with Zoo animals who like to emerge from their habitats to enjoy San Antonio’s spectacular fall weather.

FREE OUTDOOR MOVIE FOR THE FAMILY OCTOBER 16, 7:00PM - 10:30PM The Outdoor Movie Series at the Mission Marquee Plaza will present the fun and silly Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez animated movie “Hotel Transylvania.” Bring blankets, lawn chairs, snacks and picnic dinners for a non-spooky fall experience. Folks can purchase snacks from onsite food trucks, too. The venue opens at 7:00pm and movies begin about 15 minutes after dusk. Pets are welcome and parking is available.

9TH ANNUAL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION OCTOBER 23 & 24 Those outside Texas and Mexico may not realize how very special the annual Día de los Muertos Celebration is in San Antonio. This free, two-day outdoor festival at Hemisfair has grown from the meaningful Mexican “Day of the Dead” or “Dia de los Muertos” holiday’s history, art and culture. Families honor ancestors in happy celebration, making colorful ofrendas, or special altars, with vibrant fabrics, banners, orange marigolds, sugar skulls, special foods and photos of those who have passed away. This two-day event is free and open to the public, bringing together traditional art and culture with entertainment, including live music, original artwork and a dance, drum and puppet procession. There will also be poetry readings, traditional foods and the largest open Dia de Los Muertos altar in town. There’s nothing spooky about this heartwarming, colorful event for all ages. The festival entrance will be near the intersection of Nueva and Alamo streets.

DAY OF THE DEAD SAN ANTONIO RIVER NIGHT PARADE OCTOBER 29, 8:00PM This year, the River Walk will be aglow with lighted Day of the Dead-themed floats to thrill and inspire families during a spectacular night parade. The event, which will be held live with decorations from the Arneson River Theatre and throughout La Villita, will float down the San Antonio River along the downtown stretch of the River Walk, beginning at 8:00pm. It will also be televised on KSAT 12 television. Tickets range from $15-$40 and are available online at www.sanantonioriverwalk.com, along with more information about where to park, sit, stroll and enjoy the glory of the colorful,

HOWL-O-SCREAM AT SEAWORLD SAN ANTONIO DAILY/NIGHTLY THROUGH OCTOBER 30 Featuring “20 Years of Fear,” SeaWorld San Antonio claims to be the biggest and scariest Halloween event in Texas. Each year, HowlO-Scream transforms the normally peaceful park into something a bit more sinister for Halloween. Nightfall awakens hundreds of creatures roaming in “scare zones” and lurking inside free haunted houses you can enter that are included with park admission. This year promises even scarier experiences including the all-new horror-filled haunt, The Swamp at Blackwater Bayou and three new “terror-tories,” as the park calls them. Older kids and adults can enjoy thrills as they ride coasters at night. End the evening with live entertainment by some of your favorite creepy creatures and monsters. After 7:00pm, the park’s scare-level increases from haunting to horrifying, which may be too intense for kids. In fact, Howl-O-Scream is not recommended for children under the age of 13 or the faint of heart. Howl-O-Scream is included with regular Sea World park admission. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

FAMILY FUN DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION AT ESTANCIA DEL NORTE OCTOBER 30, 6:00PM Kicking off the many holiday festivities at the Estancia del Norte hotel is a Day of the Dead celebration with a spooky twist! Leave the kids at home for a night of Lotería, specialty cocktails from The Paseo Bar and creepy crawly dishes prepared by celebrity chef, Heather Nanez. Designed with celebrations in mind, Estancia del Norte is sure to host quite the soiree. Be sure to follow along on Instagram, @estanciadelnorte, for updates and event details!

SIX FLAGS FIESTA TEXAS SAN ANTONIO FRIGHT FEST DAILY/NIGHTLY THROUGH OCTOBER 30 If you dare, bring the family to Six Flag’s Halloween event of the season, featuring family-friendly attractions during the day and spooky thrills after dark. See freaky haunted attractions like The Houngan House of Voodoo or try to make it through the winding halls of Rockkill High School with startling spooky surprises. While walking through the park, be sure to watch your back, as there could be a zombie, a witch or something that goes bump in the night waiting when you walk into a “scare zone.” There’s lots of fun entertainment at special shows in the park each night and, of course, there still are the rides, which to me are scary enough. They become scarier still when you notice the creature beside you on the roller coaster could be a terrifying clown, creepy zombie or other frightening Halloween character. Six Flags Fiesta Texas always offers a good time, but each October it gets into the holiday spirit with some scary spirits of its own. 10/31/21

SPORTS BAR MADNESS

By Lakendra Lewis

With travel restrictions being what they are these days, crossing the pond to get a pint at an authentic UK pub can be well...complicated. Luckily, patrons who enjoy watching the big game at ye olde pub don’t need to go overseas to enjoy a bit of sport and ale thanks to downtown establishments that have brought the look and feel of the international pub scene to the city streets of San Antonio. Here are a few to consider for your next pub crawl.

Fashion is about looks that reflect your style, whether that means strolling the River Walk, exploring San Antonio Missions Historical Park, spending a day diving into the city’s museums or buckling up to test your bravery on loop after loop of roller coaster challenges. No matter what your fall has in store, you want to look good and feel your best. Luckily San Antonio has options that make scoring fashion finds as cool as a fall breeze. A shopping beacon on the banks of the River Walk, the Shops at Rivercenter offers fashion with a side of fun. Rivercenter mixes local shops and national chains so that you can discover a new must or browse a treasured favorite, all in view of the beauty of the River Walk. There’s something soothing about shopping just steps from the river and gazing out of Rivercenter’s wall of windows to see a river barge floating by. With H&M, Aeropostale, Francesca’s and more, you can explore and find the latest fashion. Rivercenter even defines one entire floor as its “Fashion Level,” making it easy to score what you need. One of the top reasons to shop Rivercenter: it’s a shopping destination that offers entertainment as well. If you want to entertain the family while you enjoy

some shopping solitude, you can send them to a movie at Rivercenter’s IMAX theater, play games at Dave and Busters or let them go under the sea at SEA LIFE Aquarium. And when you’re finished shopping—or simply want to refuel—there’s a wide selection of restaurants to enjoy. An adult beverage is never far away either, giving you a way to toast your fashion finds. Fantastic fashion options paired with entertainment and more can also be found at Alamo Quarry Market, a hop, skip and

a jump from downtown, and impossible to miss thanks to its iconic smokestacks. Nestled in what was once the Alamo Cement Company, Alamo Quarry Market’s design highlights remainders of the historical landmark that provided the mortar binding together much of San Antonio’s historic buildings, giving this shopping destination a unique vibe. The smokestacks that tower over the shops are often lit in colors of the season or to raise awareness for a cause, shining brightly and drawing you in like a moth to the flame of fashion.

Another shopping icon you can’t miss is North Star Mall, where the world’s largest cowboy boots have served as a larger-than-life landmark at the mall’s entrance for more than 40 years. Standing 35 feet tall, the boots are proof that everything is bigger in Texas, including the fashion finds. While those boots won’t fit you, you can be sure that the mall’s more than 200 specialty stores and restaurants will. Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s and Dillard’s all serve as anchors, while stores like Coach, Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Guess, Hollister and Zumiez are nestled inside. Visit Kate Spade for head to toe finds—and the cutest bags to take them all home in—or Louis Vuitton inside Saks Fifth Avenue for the ultimate accessories. And when you think you’re too tired to go on, refresh with a slice of cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory or land a sugar rush at Lolli & Pops. There are food options to keep you going through lunch and dinner, and shopping options

for the whole family, once again making it easy to score fashion finds and keep everyone smiling. West of downtown, fashion hunters know that they can always land the best finds at The Shops at La Cantera. An award-winning open-air shopping destination distinguished by its unique design, La Cantera boasts an impressive assortment of high-end retailers, including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, as well as Macy’s and Dillard’s. Johnny Was, Tommy Bahama, Carolina Herrera, Vineyard Vines, Chico’s, Zara, Hugo Boss and more dot the walkways that gently wind through water features, gardens and seating areas, giving your shopping a relaxed, outdoor vibe. Hopping from store to store is a fashion adventure and, of course, there’s always a wonderful spot to stop for a tasty bite for more shopping energy. Whether it’s French pastries and crepes or ice cream sandwiched between fresh-baked cookies, boost your energy and give your fashion hunt a sweet flavor as you stroll through La Cantera, or sip and shop your day away at any of the upscale restaurants and eateries waiting to welcome you. Start with the Alamo, where hundreds of volunteer defenders and Santa Anna’s troops met brutal deaths in the famous 1836 battle for Texas Independence. It’s a ghost-hunter’s goldmine. Only months after the massacre, Mexican troops were dispatched to raze the fallen fortress to the ground. But they returned, terrified, to report that a legion of ghostly monks, whirling flaming swords, materialized before their eyes. When Santa Anna dispatched another group to complete the destruction, they, too, returned shaken, reporting that a towering spirit leapt at them from the chapel roof, holding flaming fireballs. Some claim that sculptor Pompeo Coppini memorialized that apparition as the winged Spirit of Sacrifice in the classical Cenotaph that stands in Alamo Plaza today. Visit the plaza on a quiet moonlit evening when the old stones of the Alamo seem to glow from within, and you can almost hear an eerie, solitary bugle sound the notes of the deguello, Santa Anna’s signal to his soldiers to take no prisoners. Paranormal investigators say that strong emotions and violent acts create an energy that manifests in various detectable ways, and all of them have been reported at the Alamo over the years. According to “The Haunted Alamo–A History of the Mission and Guide to Paranormal Activity” by Robert Wlodarski and Ann Powell Wlodarski, ghostly footsteps of long-dead sentries and the loud sobs of grieving women have been heard many times over the years. A young blond-haired boy, perhaps the child of one of the defenders who was hustled out of the Alamo before the battle, appears in a window overlooking the old mission’s courtyard. A bushy-mustached gentleman in a top hat appears and disappears. A man in frontier buckskins carrying a long rifle and another in rough homespun clothes have

The city’s history is rich with spooky legends and downtown is a hotbed of haunts. appeared to Alamo Rangers. Ghostly murmurs emanate from empty spaces in the Long Barrack, and guards have reported their hair standing on end when mysterious, invisible presences brushed by them in the chapel. Just south of the Alamo, the historic Menger Hotel is another famously haunted place with at least one famous ghost. To date, a whopping 32 separate spirits have been reported in the hotel, including an apparition of President Theodore Roosevelt who recruited volunteers for his troops in the Spanish-American War in the Menger Bar. The magnificent old saloon, built in 1887 to replicate London’s House of Lords Pub, has reportedly been a return destination for Roosevelt’s rambunctious spirit. The ghost of Sallie White, a chambermaid

murdered by her husband in the hotel in the 1870s, has been spotted many times, wearing her antique uniform and an old bandana on her head, carrying clean towels through the corridors. The Menger is a frequent stop on a number of the city’s ghost tours, and the Sisters Grimm Ghost Tours company hosts special haunted dinners in the Menger dining room for the curious who want to dine with the undead. Another of the company’s popular tours for the brave explores the city’s most historic cemetery. Sisters Grimm is also the only outfit in town that offers a ghost tour by bus. The Menger isn’t the only hotel with a haunting history. Nearby, the Emily Morgan Hotel, which once housed an early San Antonio hospital,

is the site where some sad spirits are said to walk. Downtown’s historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel was the scene of one of the city’s most horrific modern murders. In 1965, a maid entered room 636 and found a man standing by a blooddrenched bed holding a dripping bloody bundle. She screamed and ran. When police arrived, the man was gone, leaving the room covered in gore with small pieces of flesh the only remnants of the body’s owner. Lawmen tracked the killer to the nearby St. Anthony Hotel where, barricaded in his room, he shot himself. Strange sounds still sometimes emanate from the Gunter’s Room 636, and a ghostly blonde woman has mysteriously appeared in photos taken there. Alamo City Ghost Tours start in Main Plaza and focus on the south end of the downtown. The guides speak on “twisted history, gruesome tales and ghost stories,” from the legendary hanging tree in front of the Spanish Governor’s Palace to the site of an old city jail where the last legal executions in San Antonio took place. Stories of murder and mayhem, women and children found buried interred in walls and the spirits that still lurk are intermixed with quirky city history. Like several other companies, Alamo City provides ghost hunting equipment such as EMF (electromagnetic frequency detectors) to dowsing rods 30 RIO Magazine

to give guests some interactive experience. RJA Ghost Tours goes even deeper into the details of contemporary ghost hunting. The owners and most staff have actively investigated the paranormal activity in San Antonio and elsewhere, so they have their own first-hand stories of harrowing brushes with the departed. They take along the full array of ghost-hunting devices on their rounds of downtown’s bestknown haunted sites. If all these ethereal spirits leave you shaking like a margarita machine, you might want to mix in the other kind of spirits to settle your nerves. The Nightly Spirits Haunted Pub Crawl takes guests ages 21 and over to historic haunts, with stops for libations at some cool cocktail bars with haunting pasts. If you like your ghost stories on the saucy side, Ghost City Tours offers a family ghost tour as well as the only R-rated ghost excursion. The company’s Madames and Mayhem tour focuses on adult themes and content, with stops in the old town’s former red-light district and other locations, with unexpurgated narratives.

Adventure and Tomb Rider 3-D, both just across the plaza from the Alamo, are a great place to find it. The Haunted Adventure’s walking path through a bevy of shocks and horrors is on steroids for October, with weekend Fright Nights bringing in extra actors and frights to pump up the scream factor. Tomb Rider 3-D takes folks on a ride into the ancient tomb of an Egyptian god, with laser guns to blast away at the attacking ghosts and ghouls. Even if you don’t hit a single one, you can stay and play free at the arcade at the end of the ride. As Halloween and the Day of the Dead draw nearer, the spooks and spirits are stirring. That makes this month the best time to experience the chilling tales of San Antonio’s ghosts—if you dare.

Celebrate the Holiday season along the San Antonio River Walk FORD HOLIDAY RIVER PARADE AND RIVER LIGHTING CEREMONY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2021 The 40th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade is a San Antonio tradition that officially kicks off the city’s holiday season. Under a canopy of 100,000 bright and colorful lights draped over the towering bald Cypress Trees that line the River Walk, festive and lighted floats usher in the holidays in a spectacular one-hour parade. Themed “40 Years of Magic” for the 2021 season, two special additions are included in this anniversary edition. San Antonio actor Cody Garcia will star as Grand Marshal Willy Wonka in a musical performance at the start of the parade, similar to those during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, and he will resume the role in the Majestic’s Broadway production of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory the following week, December 7-12. For a pre-parade show, illuminated kayaks, sponsored by Mission Kayaks, will cruise the river. This ticketed parade begins at 6:00pm and is broadcast live at 7:00pm at the Arneson River Theater. Several free viewing areas are offered along the parade route (bring your own chair) on a first-come basis between Richmond Avenue and Pecan Street on the east side of the River Walk. Early ticket prices range from $15 -$40 and children 2 years of age or older will need a ticket. Strollers and carriers are not allowed on the River Walk for this event. ADA tickets are available in certain areas. FORD HOLIDAY BOAT CAROLING DECEMBER 2-23, 2021 Celebrate the timeless tradition of spreading joy with a San Antonio twist. Sing in the holidays by caroling with friends and family from your private, one-hour rented boat on the River Walk, and encourage spectators along the banks of the river to join in the fun as you drift by! Caroling boats are decorated with lights and holiday bling and include a driver, a USB loaded

with popular Christmas music and folders with music lyrics. Each boat can accommodate a maximum of 15 people (children under the age of 2 are not counted toward boat capacity). Other types of festive holiday music such as mariachis, bell-ringers and bands are also welcome to book a caroling boat. With two timeslots on Mondays through Thursdays and three on Fridays through Sundays, merry songs fill every evening during the holiday season.

FORD FIESTA DE LAS LUMINARIAS DECEMBER 3-19, 2021 Experience the holiday ambience of the San Antonio River Walk as you stroll along the lush banks guided by more than 2,000 glowing luminarias—the traditional Mexican Christmas lantern originally consisting of a candle set in sand inside a small bag. This centuries-old tradition begins at dusk Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for three weekends in December.

DOWNTOWN GEM Even if you have no library books to return, do a drive-by look at the architecture of the San Antonio Public Library’s Central location. The building affectionately known as “Big Red” is the product of an architectural design competition in the 90s, where renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta partnered with local architects to produce the 240,000 square-foot library we see today. Once the library reopens to the public, peep the interior that’s splashed with light, color, walls, water and humor—all done by a local design firm Ford, Powell and Carson, Inc. This month we are sowing the seeds of art appreciation with a melding of painters and plants. Then we’ll discover a few architectural gems and learn about their historical significance. HISTORY AND BISCUITS  If you’re looking for historic architecture and well-built biscuits, it’s worth a trip to The Guenther House. Carl Hilmar Guenther came to America from Europe in the late 1800s and opened a mill in Fredericksburg. But after a drought, he relocated and built a mill and a home for his family on the more powerful San Antonio River. Using stones from what is now the San Antonio Zoo, and rocks gathered downstream, this family set up a successful mill and a future historic landmark for San Antonio. In 1898, Guenther’s Mill was renamed Pioneer Flour Mills, and it’s where we recommend grabbing breakfast if you’re looking for some history with a side of eggs. Guenther’s Favorite Breakfast Platter will get you a heap of food, including two fresh-baked Pioneer biscuits and gravy. Then head over to the museum to get a look at some of the mill memorabilia like antique baking accessories and anniversary Dresden china plates that were given to mill customers until after World War II. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

GRAND FINALE The King William neighborhood is fabulous for a drive-by if you want to gaze at historic architecture from the comfort of your car. But if you want to peek inside, plan a stop at Villa Finale. As the last home of local preservationist Walter Nold Mathis, this 1876 Italianate house is a testament to Mathis’s incredible collection of fine and decorative art. With more than 12,000 items, it’s easy to come back and find plenty of pieces that you missed. Take a self-guided tour, or pop online for the highlights in the virtual exhibition. GIVE ME LIBERTY  For happy hour we’re sitting pretty in pink inside the rosy facade of Liberty Bar. SET THE PACE  Linda Pace was a local legend in the art scene, so our art appreciation adventure wouldn’t be complete without a trip to her “laboratory of dreams” known as Artpace. You’ll even get a peek at not-yet-seen acquisitions and works ranging from the late Stone Age to present day. ARTSY DINING  We may not have a Tuscan hillside, but we do have an open-air patio at the art museum. Tre Trattoria at the SAMA is a great date-night spot to sit and reflect on your inspirational day of art and architecture.
