The beautiful cover image is eerily devoid of visitors. A conservative 14 million people typically visit the River Walk each year. But as stay-at-home orders blanketed the U.S. the flow of guests came to an abrupt halt in the second week of March. THE NEW NORMAL Who could have ever imagined this? Okay, so maybe Hollywood, with movies like Outbreak produced 25 years ago when Dustin Hoffman played a young scientist determined to find the cure serum. And of course, Bill Gates prophetic 2015 Ted Talk has resurfaced urging us to prepare for looming virus emergencies.

From the ashes of the “new normal” requiring us to work from home, social distance, and attend school online, I have witnessed unexpected positive outcomes that feel like throwbacks to a simpler time. Kids ride bikes in the street, families sit on front porches, and neighbors talk across the lawn. My neighbor offered free potted plants on her curb with a sign indicating gardening is good for the soul.

The May issue of RIO Magazine contains a blend of virtual and actual events, shopping, dining, and activities in San Antonio. Since I don’t have the benefit of a Hollywood crystal ball or Bill Gates’ wisdom, I can only hope the new normal will have us out and about while retaining some of our newly acquired simple habits.

Toasting has become indelibly ingrained into our culture as a way to commemorate any number of

important occasions, from anniversaries and weddings to successful ventures. Its origins in the West trace back

to ancient Greece and is assumed to have begun during the Homeric age ritual of supplication to the gods with a vessel of wine. Evidently, bubbles came later.

If you find yourself looking for a superb destination to enjoy a “toastable” occasion, make sure to consider these local favorites: EL COLEGIO Omni La Mansion, located in the heart of downtown on College Street, is one of San Antonio’s most iconic historic hotels. They have two fantastic choices for a luxurious toast – the in-house bar, El Colegio and Las Canarias, the hotel restaurant.

El Colegio, which means “the school,” is an homage to the hotel’s origins as a Catholic boy’s school and then a law school. It first opened in 1853 and, in fact, the bar was once the esteemed dean’s office. One of the law school graduates eventually bought the building and converted it into a hotel in 1968.

The bar is warm and welcoming, decorated with memorabilia and photographs of former school graduates. With just a touch of a speakeasy feel, it’s the kind of place where you want to sit back with friends and loved ones and toast to your good fortune.

El Colegio has many options to choose from. The bar menu is focused heavily on Texas-based wines, spirits, cocktail and draft beers. The margarita is the flagship drink for the property and can be ordered at the bar or restaurant. For something deliciously spicy you might want to order the Mexican Firing Squad margarita, made with houseinfused strawberry and jalapeño tequila, fresh lime juice and agave nectar.

Traditionalists might prefer one of their Texas Hill Country or High Plains wines, such as Becker Vineyards or Duchman Family Winery. Of course, bubbles are a popular go-to for toasts with a range of options from prosecco to champagne.

LAS CANARIAS If you decide to take advantage of one of the city’s consistently top Sunday brunches in town, you will no doubt be delighted with Las Canaria’s mimosas, made with fresh-squeezed orange juice or a variety of other fresh juices.

Edward Parker, Director of Food & Beverage for the hotel calls on his Cajun Creole roots when he offers the toast, ‘laissez les bon tempes rouler,’ which means, ‘let the good times roll.’ An easy task at Omni La Mansion.

RESTAURANT GWENDOLYN At Restaurant Gwendolyn, located on E. Pecan Street overlooking the River Walk, celebrating has never tasted so flavorful!

This fine dining gem offers a hyper-seasonal menu unlike any other restaurant in town. All perishable ingredients, such as vegetables and meat, are sourced from local farms and ranches within 150 miles of the restaurant.

The menu changes weekly, sometimes daily, and the website should be consulted to ascertain what pre-fix tasting menus and a la carte options await you. From sumptuous rabbit and delicate pillows of house made gnocchi to pan-seared amberjack, classic risotto with gremolata, you are guaranteed a meal that’s toast-worthy.

During the month of May, Gwendolyn will be serving Oysters Rockefeller, which pairs wonderfully with a glass of bubbly or a silky chardonnay. Currently, they offer a Henriot Brut Champagne or for something a little humbler, you can order a Lady Bird IPA made by Austin’s Circle Brewery.

Designated an old-world house bar, its niche is unique and fanciful European craft cocktails, as well as spirits and wine. The cozy blue cottage its housed in transports you to Europe in an instant with its chic décor, micro library and sultry charm, not to mention the international ingredients and products combined with local flavors.

Although the highly curated menu offers several great choices to toast with, such as the Silver Lining and That’s All Folks, co-owner and mixologist wizard, Benjamin Krik recommends their Vineyards & Orchards cocktail made with congac, calvados, Pineau des Charantes (Mistelle), Pommeau de Normandie, apple bitters and a splash of champagne in the form of Blanc de Blanc.

It’s May. Time for spring flowers and celebrating the person who made your life possible!

Insert guilt-trip here. She carried you for nine months, changed your diapers, endured your temper tantrums, and washed more than her fair share of your laundry. Yes, we’re talking about your Mom! No ordinary Mother’s Day celebration will do.

Take Mom on a picnic lunch in Brackenridge Park or any other local park or greenspace. Make it special: Bring a pretty tablecloth, good china, silverware, and a pot of flowers for the table (she can enjoy them at home after the picnic). Make teacakes, finger sandwiches, dainty cookies, and homemade chicken salad. Bring cupcakes or chocolates too! Make it the prettiest and most lady-like spring picnic you can imagine. Check out Pinterest for ideas.

2 Mail Mom a long, handwritten letter on pretty stationary paper, telling her how much she means to you. How about one postcard a day throughout May, each containing a special memory, something you love about her, or an inside joke to make her laugh.

Have a family portrait made. Moms like showing off pictures of the kids and grandkids. Organize clothing for a cohesive color theme. Why not have a professional photographer (or a neighbor who has a knack for photography) take a family photo outdoors, or perhaps in front of her house?

Make a video. Get the kids involved!

Interview the kids, your dad, family members, and friends and ask each of them to talk about their best memories of times spent with her. Ask them to talk about what they like best about her. Fill it with laughter and love. Or, have the kids interview Mom about her childhood memories, her parents, hobbies, passions, and her life.

Take a trip down memory lane at an outdoor movie theater, like the Mission Marquee in San Antonio, or the Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theater of New Braunfels. The Mission Marquee is no longer a true drive-in, but it does offer walk-in space with outdoor events on a big stage, and sometimes it has free films at this large outdoor venue with vendors and food trucks. Activities are supported by the city and free for the community, so check the website for events this spring. The New Braunfels Stars and Stripes theater is a traditional old-school double-feature drive-in open each night after dark.

Take Mom to see San Antonio: The Saga, a spectacular 24-minute video art projection with sound, lighting on the face of the San Fernando Cathedral at Main Plaza, telling the history, heritage, and culture of San Antonio. The light show is set to return to regular hours as of May 1 and usually runs on Tuesday, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 9 p.m., 9:30 p.m., and 10 p.m.

Enjoy Mother’s Day by doing something different and fun together in the fresh, clean spring air of the great outdoors. Call ahead or look online before you go, as temporary, seasonal schedule changes and closings may still be in effect for certain venues.

Spend a day looking at family photos with Mom. Invite siblings and make a party of the occasion with recounting stories.

Instead of going to her usual church, surprise Mom by taking her to Mariachi Mariachi Mass at Mission San Jose on Sundays at noon, or the Mariachi Choir liturgical celebration downtown at San Fernando Cathedral on Saturdays at 5 p.m.

Take Mom’s car to be washed and gas it up. Leave a sweet note in the glove box for her to discover at a later date.

RIP! Summertime is here in all its blooming glory. If you’re nursing a case of cabin fever, you’ll find the perfect cure starts with two time-honored words: “Road Trip!”

From great drives around San Antonio to all-day excursions in the Texas Hill Country, you’ll find delightful journeys and memorable moments all over the map. Best of all, you can watch the scenic vistas, and photo-perfect vignettes unfold from the sanctuary of your car. So pack up a picnic basket full of goodies, load up your traveling playlist, and head for the open road.

A leisurely drive along Mission Road takes you to all four of the beautifully restored Spanish churches and their grounds that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Street signs for the Mission Trail guide you from Mission Concepción to the southernmost, Mission Espada. Each mission has a different character and charms, from San Jose’s glorious arches and stonework to Espada’s flourishing farm fields recently restored and revived to help provide food for the needy. Located along the pristine banks of the San Antonio River, each has ample green space, convenient picnic facilities, and access to hike and bike trails if you want to stretch your legs.

In a safari state of mind? Take a drive on the wild side and check out Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. A 30-minute excursion from downtown SA takes you on a drive-through safari experience from inside your car. Wheel through 450-acres of exotic animal habitats featuring more than 500 animals from around the world. The giraffes, ostrich, water buffalo, and zebras are as interested in you and your car as you are in them.

For a delicious day trip, plan a sightseeing spree or two in the Hill Country.

Even the highways in this state are spectacular, lined with carpets of color in the wildflower season. Since the 1930s, Texas Highway Department teams have seeded the state’s roadways with 20-plus varieties of native wildflowers to create carpets of color every spring. Iconic Texas bluebonnets, bluebells, red and purple phlox, pink and lavender larkspur, Mexican poppies, primroses, Indian paintbrush, coreopsis, sunflowers, yellow and white daisies, winecups, horsemint, and verbena are among the blooming roadside attractions.

Wildflower enthusiasts will love the Willow City Loop, 13-miles of twisting two-lane ranch road through deep Coal Creek canyons and flower-filled meadows shaded by mesquite, pecan, and live oaks. The gorgeous landscape makes for a majestic drive any time of year, but during the spring wildflower season, the view across the meadows and the highest hilltops comes alive in Technicolor.

Many German immigrants staked their claims in the fertile, stream-fed Hill Country soil back when Texas was under Spanish rule, and many charming towns still bear witness to pioneers. A driving tour through a handful of these towns is rich with ornamented architecture, picturesque public art, and blooming gardens. Fredericksburg is known for its many tiny “Sunday houses,” built by German ranchers for weekend stays in town. More than 150 small boutiques fill historic Main Street. Flanked at one end is the birthplace of Admiral Chester Nimitz and the National Museum of the Pacific War. This is Texas wine country, so check out nearby vineyards for wine tasting, and look out for farm stands featuring luscious local peaches.

Just a few miles down a country road from Fredericksburg, Luckenbach is one of the most famous dots on a map in the state. The dance hall where “Waylon, Willie and the boys” are memorialized and the funky old general

store provide the ambiance that makes it a hot spot for Texas music pilgrims. Arnosky Family Farm, near Blanco, features fields ablaze with flowers in every season. In May, fields striped with pink and lavender and yellow and blue surround the Big Blue Barn, which bustles with gardeners buying bedding plants, hanging baskets, and cut flowers on weekends. An open pavilion and picnic tables make it a great snack spot on your drive, and even when the barn closes on weekdays, an “honor system” lets you purchase plants, flowers, eggs, and homemade cheese from the farm cooler.

Boerne (pronounced “Bernie”), just a short drive north of San Antonio, is a hot spot for growth, but it retains its small-town character and charm.

Cruise through the antique storefronts along Main Street, explore the idyllic cottages and gardens of the historic district or stop to feed the ducks along the lovely River Road pathway by Cibolo Creek. Nearby, the Cibolo Nature Center provides a shady creekside oasis among giant old cypress trees­—a serene and quiet spot to relax and regenerate.

So, here's a secret guide to cool places in San Antonio, but please try to keep it on the down-low.

COOL PHOTO SPOTS Obviously, a selfie in front of The Alamo is a requirement, but for something a bit more unique, stroll north or south along the 15-mile, winding, lushly landscaped San Antonio River Walk.

Beyond downtown’s famous horseshoe-shaped path filled with towering Cypress trees, bars, and restaurants, the more park-like Museum Reach extends north from downtown to the historic Pearl Brewery. Level sidewalks and a pretty trail make the prized destination a pleasure to reach. Then in the opposite direction, the Mission Reach extends south from downtown past four Spanish Colonial Missions in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Another cool photo spot is the McNay Art Museum that has long been a favorite for wedding photographers and fashion shoots (preapproval and small fee required). Now on view through the fall is Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday exhibit.

The interactive show features a runway  complete with fan for that windblown look. Pretend you’re a supermodel surrounded by the creations of iconic 1990s fashion designers Dior, Tom Ford, JeanPaul Gaultier, Carolina Herrera, Isaac Mizrahi, Todd Oldham, Oscar de la Renta, Gianni Versace, and Vera Wang.

Famed British architect David Adjaye’s Ruby City is the city’s newest shimmering architectural landmark. Home to the extensive contemporary art collection assembled by San Antonio art patron Linda Pace, the gleaming, jewel-like structure is clad with red-stained precast concrete panels embedded with bits of recycled red glass and other

reflective materials. Located where San Pedro Creek crosses Camp Street, Ruby City is just down the block from Chris Park, a tropical oasis on the West Side.

Photogs prize the East Side’s Hays Street Bridge for its unobstructed views of San Antonio’s downtown skyline. Unwind below the bridge at the Alamo Beer Company’s Beer Hall and Garden, which serves up its family of beers in a family-friendly setting with outdoor games. Free tours of the brewery available on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

COOL PLACES TO MAKE ART Recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Southwest School of Art has a picturesque campus graced by the carefully preserved buildings of the Ursuline Academy, which dates to 1851. The school now offers a bachelor of fine arts degree, but it still provides community-oriented studio art programs for adults, children, and teens. Weekend workshops and masterclasses are ideal for outof-town visitors. The Russell Hill Rogers Galleries exhibit works by acclaimed local, regional, national, and international artists.

COOL PLACES TO SEE STREET ART The Official San Anto Cultural Arts Mural Tour provides a chance to view and learn about the stunning murals and public art pieces, celebrating Mexican American history and culture, on the West Side.

COOL PLACES TO SEE LOCAL ART Directors Rigoberto Luna and Jenelle Esparza have made the Presa House Gallery into one of the city’s most vital galleries. Besides an eclectic range of exhibits by local, national and international artists, they host local and touring musical acts, DJs, poetry events, film screenings and performance art in a funky old frame house in Southtown.

Many local artists are participating in the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, which has created an outdoor gallery featuring both established and emerging artists under the highway overpass at St. Mary’s and Quincy streets just north of downtown. More than 20 murals spearheaded by the initiative along the St. Mary’s Strip celebrate the city’s live music scene.

The Blue Star Arts Complex has been at the center of the city’s art scene since 1986 when the city’s first and now longest-running venue for contemporary art opened, Blue Star Contemporary. The rambling collection of 1920s-vintage warehouses along the San Antonio River is home to artists’ studios and several galleries, including the FL!GHT Gallery, UTSA’s Terminal 136, San Angel Folk Art, Cinnabar Gallery, and Mockingbird Handprints. The First Friday Art Walk is a longtime Blue Star tradition.

The Second Saturday Art Walk tours more than a dozen artist studios and artist-run galleries in the Lone Star Art District and South Flores Art District, two adjacent warehouse complexes at South Flores Street and Lone Star Boulevard.

Under development now is the Department of Arts and Culture’s new River Walk Public Art Garden. Located near the Shops at Rivercenter extension on the River Walk and on street level, the city plans to preview new works in the public art garden before redistributing to permanent locations around the city. Two more phases of the garden will finish in 2021. Mexican artist Sebastian’s monumental red sculpture Antorcha de Amistad (Torch of Friendship) marks the entry for the garden at the traffic circle where Commerce, Alamo, and Losoya streets converge.

ARNESON RIVER THEATRE (0.0 MILE – STARTING POINT) For this tour, we are going to start at the base of the river’s loop near La Villita at the Arneson River Theatre. This unique open-air outdoor venue, completed in 1941, allows the river to flow right through it. On one side, is the iconic stage accented with bell towers and graced by lively performances. On the other, you will see grass-covered stadium seating for 900 spectators. Take a seat and take in the views. Are you ready to brush up on your movie trivia? TORCH OF FRIENDSHIP (0.2 MILE) Let’s head north, up the river towards our next mustsee stop. As you pass the Hilton Palacio del Rio, look up and take note. This historic hotel was constructed for the 1968 World’s Fair in a record 202 days! Each room was created as a modular unit, complete with towels and mini-shampoos, and placed into the structure to increase efficiency.

As you cross the next footbridge, take the stairs up to the street level at East Commerce St. and Losoya St., and you will see La Antorcha de la Amistad or The Torch of Friendship designed by Mexico City based artist Sebastian. The 65-foot, 2-ton, reddish-orange sculpture of steel represents two cultures, languages, and roads merging into one. It was unveiled in 2002 and has served as a symbol of San Antonio’s shared culture and friendship with Mexico ever since.

THE ALAMO (0.4 MILE) Next, we will descend the steps back to the River Walk and make our way to a site you are sure to “remember” ...The Alamo! Continue heading up the river until you get to the Hyatt Regency hotel. Here you can cut through the lobby and make your way past a series of elegant fountains until you ascend back up to the street level to see The Alamo revealed. While you are there, explore the grounds and try to find Bella the Alamo Cat, the unofficial protector of The Alamo. She loves posing for photos! As you walk back to the Hyatt to reenter the River Walk, take note of how many floors there are. The developers were given a height limit because when the sun sets the rays have to fall on the historic Alamo site.

MUSEUM REACH (TWIN CYPRUS STARTING POINT) (1 MILE) If you are a fan of long, peaceful walks, then you are going to want to add on the Museum Reach leg of this tour. If your feet need a break at this point, then you are in the perfect spot to explore restaurant and bar options in the heart of downtown.

The Sonic Passage

To get to the Museum Reach, continue following the curve of the river past the Omni La Mansion del Rio. You will reach a point where the river splits left and right. Turn right by the Twin Cypress trees and continue to head north towards the East Houston St. bridge. This peaceful path is graced with beautiful trees, foliage, and public art projects and will take you to The Pearl. Here are our favorite sights along the way: Tobin Center River Walk Plaza (1.8 Miles) The Tobin Center is not only home to the city’s main cultural performances but is also an architectural gem. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza is graced with lush landscaping, tiered grass-covered benches, and modern architecture that illuminates at night to become a form of art. This river accessible plaza is open to the public and is the perfect place to relax and take in the views.

The Sonic Passage (2.3 Miles) The Sonic Passage designed by Ohio artist Bill Fontana looks like a normal walkway until your ears are washed over with the sounds of the San Antonio river played on a specially designed speaker system.

The Grotto

F.I.S.H (2.7 Miles) F.I.S.H designed by New York artist Donald Lipski is probably the most recognizable art piece along the river. This installation comprises 25 seven-foot-long fiberglass figures of native long-eared sunfish suspended from the overpass. Walk along this route at night, and you will see them illuminated and reflected off the river below.

The Grotto (3 Miles) One of the last major installations to check out on the Museum Reach is The Grotto designed by San Antonio artist Carlos Cortes. Complete with waterfall and artfully placed shells, this is the perfect tranquil place to take in the beauty of the river.

CURED & Paying it FOWARD

McHugh had worked as a chef in some of New Orleans most highly-acclaimed and richly awarded restaurants in the 14 years prior, including James Beard award-winning restaurant August. Steve and Sylvia had survived hurricane Katrina in 2005, remaining in the city to help feed first-responders and those stranded there.

Walk into Cured, San Antonio’s celebrated Pearl district gastropub, and an enormous glass charcuterie case of cured meats, including ham, pork shoulder, venison, Italian-style hard salamis, and more, meets diners at the door.

Known for hand-crafted artisanal charcuterie boards, pork sausage gumbo, mussels, freshcatch fish, steak frites, and tender flank steaks that carnivores crave, Cured is a favorite restaurant among Texas foodies. And because four-time James Beard Award finalist chef Steven McHugh keeps his in-house smoked and cured meats front-and-center on sparkling display, many patrons assume that’s where this fashionable eatery gets its name. But that’s only a thinly shaved slice of the story.

“It was 2009. I was only 35-years old and about to move to Texas, and I’m sitting in my doctor’s office in New Orleans when he tells me I have a softball-sized tumor in my chest, and it is cancer,” recalls Chef McHugh. “It was non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a blood cancer. My wife Sylvia and I were just about to move to San Antonio to open a restaurant, and we were ready for a change, but, wow, not this.”

“We would lie in our bed across the Mississippi River from the French Quarter in Algiers and listen to foghorns and sirens and take the ferry to work.

It was a surreal time. But Steve’s diagnosis felt even more unreal,” says Sylvia.

Once more, the couple held on to one other and decided to deal with his diagnosis, head-on, the same way they had Katrina.

“We just had to move forward, face hard facts, help others, fight for our future, cook up a storm, and work for a cure,” says McHugh. And so, they did. The couple moved to San Antonio, and Steve kept on cooking. Today, McHugh is celebrating nine years cancer-free. “I am so grateful,” he says.

joining forces with other chefs, businesses, and sponsors, to host an annual “Cured for a Cure” dinner benefitting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

The event is held each September, which is Blood Cancer Awareness month. The elaborate non-profit extravaganza includes cocktails, a multiple-course meal with cocktails, wine pairings, music, and more.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offered invaluable support during my treatment. Sylvia and I really want to pay them back by paying it forward,” says McHugh, who supports various philanthropic ventures, such as making quarterly “gastro-giving” donations of $1 from every charcuterie board served.

Cured is more than just a reminder of McHugh’s recovery. It’s a word that’s long been a part of his lexicon, growing up with brothers, hunting, and fishing in the Wisconsin wilderness where they would raise food, forage for ingredients, hunt and fielddress animals in the wild, cook, smoke, and cure their own meats.

With a clean bill of health, he and Sylvia opened their own restaurant at The Pearl, ever so aptly naming it Cured in a space that in 1904 was the Administration Building of the Pearl Brewery. Steve is the executive chef, and Sylvia runs the office.

Today, the restaurant is a San Antonio success story: a hot spot at happy hour, with cool splash-hit craft cocktails and a well-curated wine selection. It’s a bright, bustling brasserie for lunch, brunch, and leisurely dinners in a youthful space graced with good historic bones.

Vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians, those with intolerance to gluten can find all something delightful on the menu, fresh from the local farmers’ market.

And naturally, Cured is a mecca for meat lovers.

The restaurant’s success has kept the couple busy.

“I am just a farm boy at heart who thinks people should know where their food comes from,” says McHugh. He remains dedicated to sustainability, supporting local purveyors who provide pure, fresh, regional ingredients that complement his team of chefs’ organic methods. “I see it all as a healthful, sustainable approach to dining, and I feel it helped me personally in my recovery.”

Tickets for the 6th annual Cured for a Cure dinner will begin selling online and at Cured in the near future, so watch the website for details.

Last year's Cured for a Cure Dinner raised more than $50,000 for the cause, “This year, I hope to raise even more money and raise consciousness in the community to support those who helped me with my healing process,” says McHugh. “I’m so grateful for my remission. Cured is more than just my restaurant name. For me, it’s a dream come true.”
