Two iconic fixtures in downtown San Antonio, “La Antorcha de la Amistad” (Spanish for “The Torch of Friendship”) and the Tower of the Americas, serve as beacons greeting visitors and locals alike. The Torch of Friendship is an abstract sculpture by Mexican artist Sebastián and was presented as a gift from the Mexican government to The City of San Antonio in 2002. The Tower of the Americas is one of the tallest observation towers in the U.S. and was designed by local architect O’Neill Ford for the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio, known as HemisFair ’68.

LET THE CELEBRATIONS BEGIN!
There is a lot to celebrate this June, starting with the 331st anniversary of the naming of San Antonio! History lesson: on June 13, 1691, European explorers arrived in the existing Payaya village named Yanaguana—you will notice other references to this name around town and now you know where it came from! June 13 is the feast day of the Catholic saint Anthony of Padua, so Father Damien Massanet, a Franciscan priest traveling with the expedition, named the area San Antonio de Padua in his honor. A second expedition arriving on April 13, 1709 led to the naming of our favorite waterway, the river of San Antonio de Padua. But the naming and founding of our beautiful city are actually two separate dates. On May 1, 1718, Father Antonio Olivares established the mission of San Antonio de Valero (now known as the Alamo) and that date became the official founding of the city. This bronze statue of Saint Anthony of Padua was donated to the city by the saint’s birth country, Portugal, in honor of HemisFair ’68, the 250th anniversary of San Antonio’s founding. It can be seen along the River Walk from the Commerce Street access, near St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
June also brings Juneteenth and Pride celebrations with several citywide events including festivals and street and river parades. Fiesta Noche del Rio kicks off nearly three months of vibrant, lively and traditional folklorico performances every Friday and Saturday at Arneson River Theatre, and other colorful productions can be seen at more of downtown’s historic theatres.

Crawfish and bats also take center stage this month, but not necessarily together! It is crawfish season so what better time to indulge in a mudbug boil. Then heads up as San Antonio gets batty with two viewing areas in downtown to watch bats emerge for their nightly feedings, and our beloved Missions baseball team season is in full “swing” with cool evening games. If hot is more your style, there is a whole line-up of hot foods, hot dancing and hot tours to really get a taste of the Alamo City.
Thanks for spending some of your summer in San Antonio!
