Regardless if eating vegetarian or vegan isn’t your norm, you won’t want to miss out on these five veggie-friendly restaurants serving up some truly tasty plant-based meals! They are that good! GREEN VEGETARIAN CUISINE Green Vegetarian Cuisine, located at the historic Pearl Brewery and further north at Alon, was the first dedicated vegetarian restaurant to appear on the scene in San Antonio over 13 years ago. In a town of tacos and barbacoa, it wasn’t an easy feat, but Green has managed to tap into that vegetarian zeitgeist and go the distance, thanks to their scrumptious and versatile menu.

They make their seitan, or wheat protein, in-house. Everything is made from scratch in-house, except for the bread, tortillas, and tempeh, which they have made for them locally. Other must-tries include the empanadas, tamales, buffalo tofu, and nachos. Owner, Jose Cruz, highly recommends the Eggplant Torta – a ginormous sandwich filled with crispy eggplant, black beans, pico de gallo, greens and peppercorn ranch.

A full-service diner-style restaurant, they offer a range of dishes from pancakes to sandwiches and burgers with a Tex-Mex twist. All of the loaves of bread, sauces, and desserts are naturally vegan, but guests have the option to order real cheese and eggs. Everyone’s favorite is the “Big Nasty Burger,” made with either a chickpea veggie patty or Beyond Meat Patty, cheese, avocado, grilled onions, and mushrooms, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, fakin’ bacon, and chipotle mayo. Even wellestablished meat-eaters love taking a bite of this bad boy.

POWERHOUSE BAKERY Located on the northside in the medical district, is a dedicated gluten-free bakery with specialty sweets and prepared meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Powerhouse Bakery is the solution for those who struggle with gluten restrictions but still need to satisfy cravings. Meals may be picked up to-go or enjoyed in-house. A registered dietician designs the recipes with a focus on healthful eats that are both delicious and satisfying. They can accommodate virtually any diet, including vegan and keto.

Although the menu offers items that everyone craves, they also have lighter fare, such as the Charita Bowl. This wholesome number comes with avocado, sesame slaw, carrots, garbanzo beans, quinoa tabouli, hummus, tofu, feta, and steamed broccoli on a bed of romaine. As if you couldn’t feel any better about eating this, they donate 50 cents from every bowl to a local charity. We think we just heard the angels sing. You will, too, after dining at Green.

SENOR VEGGIE Senor Veggie in Southtown, just off of S. Alamo St., has been a staple of this artsy neighborhood since 2014. They started at the farmers market but soon became a local’s favorite, whether they like meat or not. Although Senor Veggie changes up the menu quarterly, they keep popular items that folks just can’t live without, such as the jack fruit tacos.

Bread is baked fresh every Friday as well as everyone’s favorite cinnamon rolls, which are made either vegan or with eggs. They even offer ones made with a low sugar frosting. Vegetarians adore their Egg and Greens Frittata, while the vegans go nuts for the hearty Buddha Bowl, made with a medley of greens, beans, and roots.

EARTH BURGER If you want something fast, delicious, and one hundred percent plant-based, normally you would be out of luck, but thanks to Earth Burger, which has two locations on the northside, your food-to-go dreams have come true. This fast-casual restaurant with a drive-thru is everything you’ve dreamed of when you’re having those weak moments dreaming of a Big Mac. Most San Antonio folks are sick of being stuck “Home Alone” and are ready to socialize at a safe distance. Spending the entire spring sitting inside watching TV, working on little laptops, squinting at a tiny smartphone and iPad screens has dulled our senses. We’re eager to head outdoors, and the

“Some venues, like Mission Marquee Plaza, offer food trucks and live entertainment, too. All have bathroom facilities of one kind or another. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the night air, see a fun film, and create sweet family memories,” says Martinez.

And just in time because drive-in theaters are in vogue again. “We just love the community-building aspect of it,” says Angela Martinez. She, with her husband, Rick, owns and operates Slab Cinema, providing huge inflatable movie screens to outdoor venues throughout San Antonio and surrounding cities. “We provide free family-friendly movie nights movies and big-screen entertainment in outdoor venues about 200 times a year in popular places like Travis Park, Hemisfair Park, Mission Marquee Plaza, the San Antonio

Some parks even allow guests to bring alcoholic beverages in nonbreakable containers. Some have slabs where folks put up chairs; others are just grassy spaces where folks spread blankets and pillows on the ground. “I’ve even seen people put up fancy tables and serve wine and cheese at the Botanical Garden. It all just depends on the venue. Most parks are filled with lawn chairs, blankets, and strollers. Some spots even offer playgrounds, since youngsters can’t always sit through a feature-length film,” says Martinez.

Before they ever dreamed of starting Slab Cinema, the Martinez family owned a video store in Southtown on St. Mary’s called Planet of the Tapes. Then one day, the owner of La Tuna restaurant asked if the couple would show a movie on a concrete slab outside his eatery. They did, and the event was such a big hit the couple continued for years there. Now a big building stands where the slab once was, but that’s where Martinez’ Slab Cinema business was born 17 years ago. “Everything looks better on the big screen,” says Rick Martinez, who loves their old-fashioned-style family business where their kids even help out. Movies are shown on 11’x20’ or 26’x16’ inflatable screens.

Outdoor movies are hardly new to San Antonio. The Mission Drive-In Theatre was among many popular outdoor theatres in the early days of cinema. It opened on March 27, 1948, with a spaghetti western, “Pirates of Monterey.” After running films nightly for more than a half-century, Mission was the last drive-in theater in San Antonio when

it closed in 2000. Slab Cinema began working with the City of San Antonio (COSA) in 2013 to offer movies on the Mission’s enormous renovated screen. The theater is now owned by COSA and operated by the World Heritage Office. Another outdoor cinema experience may be found at Stars & Stripes, a new old-school drive-in movie theater that opened several years ago in New Braunfels, where double-features light up the big screen on summer nights. “After being inside for so long, families are eager to get outdoors and enjoy good old-fashioned fun together,” says Angela Martinez. “Everyone loves going to the movies, and San Antonio families have always flocked outside. I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer evening.”

But that leaves more space and time to ramble and absorb the ambiance of this marvelous old place. Shop till you drop for colorful clothes, household goods, and gifts in the boutiques, kiosks, and carts where local artists sell their wares. Or come on a quiet evening and relax on a beautifully crafted bench under antique streetlights and listen to the splashing water in the old stone fountains. Relaxing? Definitely. Romantic? Oh yeah!

MI TIERRA CAFÉ Y PANADERIA Mi Tierra Café is the anchor and undisputed queen of Market Square, a beloved institution so successful it helped El Mercado and the city’s surrounding Zona Cultural rise again. In 1941 young Pedro and Cruz Cortez paid $150 for a tiny three-table hole-in-the-wall in the fast-deteriorating old farmers’ market and soon christened it Mi Tierra, “My Land” in Spanish. Nearly 80 years later, still firmly in Cortez family hands, Mi Tierra now seats 500—and it’s often full.

LA MARGARITA RESTAURANT AND OYSTER BAR Right across the old brick-paved way in the square is the family’s La Margarita Restaurant and Oyster Bar, where “sizzling fajitas’ and the eponymous cocktail are served up, along with strolling mariachis. (Remember, they’re not singing for free – ask about proper tipping before enjoying a half-dozen table serenades). Viva Villa Taqueria! is the family’s newest Market Square venture, with a light modern feel and “revolutionary” Tex-Mex fare.

Driven by her belief that art is a vital social force, San Antonio contemporary art patron Linda Pace founded ArtPace, an acclaimed residency program for regional, national, and international artists. Inspired by her dream of a fairytalelike “ruby city,” she commissioned famed British architect David Adjaye to design a fantastical home for her remarkable collection of hundreds of contemporary artworks. Located on the banks of San Pedro Creek, Ruby City is an architectural gem. But before she could see her dream become a reality, Linda died July 2, 2007, at her home in San Antonio following a vigorous battle with breast cancer. The Linda Pace Foundation, founded in 2003, manages Ruby City and continues to acquire work reflecting Linda’s sensibility and feminist perspective. Linda was born on April 17, 1945. Her mother, Margaret Bosshardt, who majored in art at Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans, came from a prominent German-Swiss family that once owned San Antonio's Pearl Brewery. Her father, David Earl Pace, with a degree in chemistry and history from Tulane University in New Orleans, was the son of a Louisiana syrup manufacturer. In 1948, her parents founded Pace Foods, a small pickle, jelly, and Picante sauce business. Her father called Picante sauce "the maple syrup of San Antonio." Pace Picante Sauce led the way when Mexican salsa eventually outpaced ketchup among America’s favorite condiments by the end of the 20th century.

Linda Pace

Linda studied art at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Austin. She married Christopher “Kit” Goldsbury in 1967, and they had two children. Linda earned a bachelor’s of art degree from Trinity University in 1980. Two years later, the couple purchased Pace Foods and successfully expanded it into an international brand. But the stresses of running the business led to divorce in 1987. Goldsbury went on to develop the foodcentric Historic Pearl Brewery. Linda focused on her work as an artist. She captured ideas from her dreams in color-pencil sketches and created whimsical, large-scale assemblages with found objects. Her work was featured in exhibitions in the San Antonio Museum of Art and Blue Star Contemporary, as well as numerous commercial galleries and private collections. As she ventured more into the world of contemporary art, Linda began to challenge conventional views about politics, culture, and family. Becoming the city’s most important contemporary art patron, she chaired the San Antonio Art Institute. She was inspired by the impact of well-known artists the institute attracted to San Antonio before financial problems forced it to close in 1992. In 1993, Linda founded Artpace and opened the International Artist-in-Residence program in 1995 in a renovated, two-story Hudson car dealership where it is located today. Three times a year, Artpace invites three artists – a Texan, a nationally recognized artist, and an artist with an international reputation – to spend two months in San Antonio making art. Setting the tone for the many exhibits to come, Artpace’s inaugural exhibition featured artists selected by Rob Storr, then senior curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The artists included Jesse Amado of San Antonio, Felix Gonzalez-Torres of New York, and Annette Messager of Paris, France.

English artists Cornelia Parker and Jeremy Deller both created projects at Artpace that went on to win Great Britain’s Turner Prize, and San Antonio artists Franco Mondini-Ruiz and Dario Robleto were selected for the Whitney Biennial after having residences. Artpace’s guest curators discovered the city’s thriving art scene and RIO Magazine

opened doors internationally to San Antonio artists, doing more than any other local institution to erase the stigma of being a South Texas “regional artist.” After a quarter-century, Artpace has awarded residencies to more than 240 artists and nurtured the careers of eight MacArthur Fellows, seven Turner Prize nominees, and 46 Whitney Biennial artists. The Linda Pace Foundation continues to provide some funding for ArtPace, but it is now a thriving, independent art organization. A pioneer of “fill-in” development in the city’s urban core, Linda transformed an office building formerly occupied by the Tobin aerial map company on the West Side into the Camp Street Lofts. Across the street, she built Chris Park in 2005 as a memorial to her son. The meandering layout of walkways amid lush foliage featuring journal benches, a tumble hill, and unexpected art encounters was designed by Teresita Fernández, an ArtPace resident in 1998. A second gallery, Studio, is located behind the park. Maintained by the Linda Pace Foundation, ChrisPark is open to the public. The entire Camp Street campus comprises “Ruby City.” Adjaye’s design for Linda’s contemporary art collection features cantilevered skylights above four spacious galleries. Clad in red concrete panels sprinkled with tiny pieces of glass, Ruby City appears to shimmer in the sunlight. Adjaye’s other buildings in the United States include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Smithsonian National

Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Linda was introduced to the architect by the British artist Isaac Julien, an Artpace resident artist who became her good friend. Julien’s immersive video installation, Playtime, starring James Franco and Maggie Chenug, is on view through Aug. 31 at Ruby City. In addition to her work in San Antonio, Pace served on New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art’s national committee, Aspen Art Museum’s national council, a member of the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Aspen, a member of the arts advisory committee at The Aspen Institute, a trustee for the Dia Center for the Arts in New York and on the international council of the Tate Gallery in London.

By June, some of our January workout resolutions have faded. But what if your workout jam was more fun and energizing and extended beyond the gym? How about a StairMaster challenge on the River Walk or practicing yoga at a historic brewery and meditation at a tea garden. So grab

your gym shoes and give me ten (minutes to read this article).

RUN THE RIVER WALK 5K On your mark, get set, go! Did you know the Museum Reach stretch of the River Walk has mile markers for you to plan out your 5k? The start of this trail is downtown at the paver marked â€œBegin: 0.0,â€? which is located right past Biga on the Banks near the Drury Plaza Hotel. If you start here, you will run through the Museum Reach and make it to The Pearl at the 2-mile mark. There are plenty of markers to track your progress, and you have the control to customize your run. Make sure to keep an eye out for mosaics, public art, and even some wildlife. This run will be way more entertaining than the treadmill!

MASTER THE RIVER WALK STAIRMASTER CHALLENGE If you have already taken a stroll anywhere along the downtown section of the River Walk, you've probably noticed stairs and bridges—A LOT of stairs and bridges. Welcome to your new personal StairMaster with distractingly beautiful vistas; it will make exercise more fun! There are plenty of stairs with a view, like the numerous river footbridges, River Walk access points from the street, and the Tobin Center plaza. Find some stairs without too many people, and let’s start the workout regimen. • Quick Feet: Take each step one at a time and make

your way to the top. • Double Step Lunges: Take steps two at a time, making

sure to dip for a lunge. • Sprints: It’s a race to the top!

Repeat for a few reps, or do one of your favorite exercise plans. If you are just starting, a few simple walks up and down are a great workout too!

HIKE THE BRACKENRIDGE PARK AND OLMOS BASIN PARK TRAILS If you are looking to connect with nature while getting your exercise, there are two tranquil trails to hike within the city. Brackenridge Park is one of San Antonio’s oldest parks that was created in 1899 when George Washington Brackenridge donated the land to the city. Just a short 10-minute drive north of downtown, this 343-acre park is located in the cultural Broadway Corridor and is home to beautiful trees, trails, and water features. There are three wooded trails to choose from, including the Waterworks Trail (1.5 miles), Wildlife Trail (1 mile), and Wilderness Trail (0.75 miles). A unique statue marks each one. Fifteen-minutes north of downtown near the Alamo Quarry Market is Olmos Basin Park. This paved trail provides smooth, easy access, and, at just under a mile in length, it’s great for walks or short runs. The paved path makes it the perfect option for walking your dog or strolling with the baby while taking in the fresh air. RIO Magazine

YOGA AT THE PEARL If you’re a yogi, the perfect place to go into downward-dog is on the lawn at The Pearl. This chic environment is a mere 5 minutes north of downtown. How often do you get to practice yoga at a former brewery? The brewery started in 1883. Today, it’s a mix of residential, retail, dining, and public space complete with lush plantings restored architecture and repurposed brewery equipment, all serving as the perfect backdrop to your yoga session. Bring a mat and download the Black Swan Yoga app to start your sunrise yoga class. When done, treat yourself to a latte from Local Coffee and stroll the grounds along the river. HIGH-INTENSITY WORKOUT AT YANAGUANA GARDEN Are you looking to feel more energized? Yanaguana Garden, located within Hemisfair Park, is just south of downtown under the Tower of the Americas. This vibrant downtown park is home to murals, mosaics, and public art pieces that are energizing, fun, and the perfect backdrop for some high-intensity interval training or HIIT workouts! There are plenty of spaces to bring your mat and set up your workout space from decks to grassy patches to some soft cushioned flooring near the play area. If you are new to high-intensity workouts, some great training apps to start with include Peloton, Seven, and Sworkit, get ready for some knee raises and burpees!

MEDITATION AT THE JAPANESE TEA GARDENS Now that we’ve gone through workouts for the body, let’s do an exercise for the mind. Meditation is a great way to clear your head and feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day. You can meditate almost anywhere, but it’s better to start somewhere that’s already relaxing and tranquil. The Japanese Tea Gardens are located in Brackenridge Park and offer beautiful trails, flowers, reflecting pools, and even a waterfall, making it a great place to find your zen. You can meditate on your own, but if you find yourself distracted, the apps Headspace and Calm could help you stay on track. Just remember to stop and smell the flowers, watch the waterfalls, and listen to the birds! Remember always to practice safe workouts and to stretch beforehand to prevent any injuries!

Helpers By Janis Turk

San Antonio is a community of caring people who, especially in a crisis, are quick to help one another. As Americans band together during the COVID-19 pandemic, it would take every page in this magazine to list the countless helpers who came to our community's aid, and this short feature can't possibly do justice even to the few mentioned here. Thanks go out to every citizen, health care worker, business, foundation, and organization who focused on care above crisis, putting neighbors' needs before their own.

THE SAN ANTONIO FOOD BANK Few organizations have done so much for so many as the San Antonio Food Bank. Normally, the SA Food Bank feeds about 60,000 people a week, but since the pandemic, this hard-working and compassionate nonprofit has fed as many as 180,000 a week. Families call ahead requesting assistance, and cars lineup at pick-up points so folks may get groceries and household essentials they so desperately need. Helpers, including volunteers at mobile pantries and those able to distribute meals, are still needed. Cash support from San Antonio based grocery retailer H-E-B and Bud Light distributor Silver Eagle Beverages support the food bank's efforts. UNITED WAY OF SAN ANTONIO AND BEXAR COUNTY As Covid-19 began to spread, the health and safety of the San Antonio community

and its residents remained the number one priority of San Antonio's United Way. The local focus, in concert with community impact partners, is working to improve the lives of local children, students, families, and those in emergencies. The people who United Way serves may be even more vulnerable during this public health emergency. United Way's 2-1-1 Help Line serves as part of the disaster communications plan for the city, county, and state governments. The call center is in active disaster response mode as they partner with the San Antonio MetroHealth Department (SAMHD) and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to combat COVID-19 locally. The 24-hour, year-round helpline is staffed with specialists who direct callers to the appropriate COVID-19-specific resources that are currently available in a statewide database.

DESERT DOOR DISTILLERY An unlikely helper is this popular SouthCentral Texas distillery immediately began to make and distribute hand sanitizer produced according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and FDA standards to part of their daily activities during the COVID-19 crisis. During its first week of production, it offered 20,000 8-ounce bottles free of charge to the public and continues to do so. Co-founders Ryan Campbell, Judson Kauffman, and Brent Looby, who all served the military, wanted to aid in the fight against COVID-19, so they began donating directly to many organizations, including the San Antonio Police Department, area nursing homes, and area shelters. FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION SERVICES This 24-hour crisis intervention line, (210) 7338810, has long offered hope and help to San Antonio and surrounding-area individuals and families affected by the pain and long-term effects of domestic violence and have been an especially helpful source of support during this crisis. HEART WATER® Texas-based Heart Water® owners hurried to San Antonio to help nurses, doctors, EMS technicians, and others working long grueling shifts at local hospitals during this crisis. Heart Water® co-founders, Ylianna (Guerra) Dadashi, a former Miss Texas USA, and her husband Michael Dadashi, CEO of MHD Enterprises, delivered cases of refreshing sustainable canned rainwater to University Health Systems staff. They also donated and distributed over 2,800 cases ( 33,979 cans) of Heart Water® throughout Texas and 5,967 cases, nationwide. The produce has always been about helping, as 23 percent of profits on each can go to help children in need. PRESA TRANSPORTATION COALITION Providing grocery curbside pick-up rides to any elderly or disabled person, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, the PRESA Transportation Coalition serves many San Antonio locals in need. INFINITE RECOVERY Those with struggling with addiction were not alone during this crisis, and many were able to find help in their recovery from the safety and privacy of their own homes. Infinite Recovery is but one of many organizations that provided virtual/telephonic platforms to connect and help people while in quarantine. A full-continuum substance abuse treatment program serving Bexar county and beyond, Infinite Recovery utilized a video conferencing platform so clinicians could provide an invaluable form of intensive outpatient and aftercare programming to San Antonio and South-Central Texas residents. SOUTH TEXAS BLOOD AND TISSUE CENTER Responding to a drop in blood donations citywide, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center set up blood banks throughout the city, ensuring that all safety protocols are in place. To donate blood or offer support, call (210) 7315590. COVID-19 RESPONSE FUND OF THE SAN ANTONIO AREA FOUNDATION The COVID-19 Response Fund was created by the San Antonio Area Foundation, with multiple partners, including the United Way of San

Antonio and Bexar County. Grant funding is available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson counties. CULINARIA, CHEF JASON DADY, FRIENDS OF THE RIVER WALK & SILVER EAGLE BEVERAGES When COVID-19 hit, hospitality workers found themselves sidelined and hungry. Culinaria partnered with local celebrity Chef Jason Dady to form HospitALLity House, an emergency relief fund providing meals. Friends of the River Walk got in the act with a free online concert series seeking to raise money The nice folks at Silver Eagle Beverages, distributor of Bud Light, are matching public gifts up to $10,000.
