MI AMOUR. MI SAN ANTONIO
San Antonio: Gerry Lair gerry@travelingblender.com
February is a super fun month to explore San Antonio, the city I love.
Madeleine Justice madeleine@travelingblender.com
This month’s issue of RIO Magazine is one of the best in my eight years as editor. From a chocolate adventure and super romantic spots for dining to shopping for jewelry (my favorite thing to do) and exploring our city’s Black History. Parents, take note of this month’s story about entertaining teens in the Family Fun story. As the mother of an 18-year-old, I lived through it – the pain is real!
Austin: Sandy Weatherford sandy@travelingblender.com
A few years ago, we started a monthly story, 24-48-72 Hours, providing suggested itineraries for one, two, and three days of what to do and where to dine. I enjoy receiving emails with rave reviews from locals and visitors who use the itineraries. These curated forays through town guarantee a day of exploration without the risk of disappointment.

For some, Valentine’s Day is a whirlwind of romance. For others, it’s akin to being attacked by a herd of rabid porcupines. For me, it’s just a good excuse to celebrate love and romance—with friends, family, co-workers, and even our fur babies! This February, we’ve honed in on restaurants with enchanting food and drink pairings that will make you believe in love again, even if it’s only with yourself. BIGA ON THE BANKS You simply can’t go wrong at Biga on the Banks, if you’re hoping to inspire romance of any kind. Biga is a fairytale in and of itself – the stuff that dreams are made of – sugar, spice, and souffles as light and fluffy as clouds. This 30-year-old restaurant is as classic as a vintage Ford Model T, with renowned elegance and superior hospitality. Many locals consider Chef Bruce Auden, one of San Antonio’s godfathers of fine dining. Located in the old San Antonio library in what is currently the International Center, the dining room was once the reading room and still features stunning floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the River Walk. Biga has added an exciting new culinary program to the menu called ‘Traveling Tastebuds,’ which highlights a different holiday/region each month with new tapas-style dishes that allow people to explore cultures through cuisine in a fun and affordable way.

Besides that, an always seductive dish is the Seared Diver Scallops with smoked roe, served with fresh, seasonal vegetables, such as a butternut squash puree and collard greens over some velvety cheesy grits. They recommend pairing the dish with an Armagnac French 75 – the fruity notes complement the scallops while the citrus cuts through the richness.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
For dessert, treat your loved one and yourself to their divine Dark Chocolate Mousse, which sits on a thin layer of cake and goes well with their new Raspberry Kiss cocktail, made with Dark Crème de Cacao, Crème de Cassis, vodka and topped with whipping cream. The drink mimics the flavors of the mousse and practically guarantees a raspberry kiss at dinner’s conclusion. SOUTHERLEIGH At the Historic Pearl, Southerleigh is always a sure bet for a romantic pairing. Start with their super fresh and medium salinity Gulf Oysters and House Punch made with red wine, fresh cranberry, and citrus juice. Then ease into their Quickly Grilled Ribeye A La Mode, made with bacon, onion deme glace, horseradish cream, and whipped potatoes for a hearty meal that’s better than a bear hug. For brew lovers, Southerleigh has an impressive menu of 15 different housemade brews on tap, including their Standard IPA, which is a dry, balanced, citrusy favorite. Other options include Southerlite, an American light lager, and Texas Uncommon, a California common style, which all make great companions to Southerleigh’s tasty Famous Fried Snapper Throats, served with crystal aioli and celery root remoulade.
BRASSERIE MON CHOU CHOU Also located at the Pearl is Southerleigh’s new sister restaurant, Brasserie Mon Chou Chou led by Executive Chef Laurent Réa. The brasserie serves quintessential French dishes that highlight simple and earthy flavors and ingredients they refer to as comfort food, but which, in fact, offers an elevated dining experience.

The Bisque De Homard En Croute is a thing of beauty and an impressive start to a playful tete-a-tete. Order a couple of rounds of the French Pink Fairy, made with Citadelle Gin, fraises des bois liqueur, lemon juice, egg whites to keep the conversation going smoothly. At first, the Sandwich au Fromage Raclette may seem too simple a dish to order on a special evening out, but once you see that crisp, gooey cheese on Bayonne ham with smoked paprika aioli and cornichon on a freshly-baked baguette, your heart will start racing. Could it be love? The oh-so-titillating Bordeaux Sour, made with Four Roses Yellow Label Bourbon, Lillet Rouge, lemon juice, maple syrup, egg whites, soda water, maraschino cherries, and orange bitters, will help put the flames out. LANDRY’S For a more traditional romantic dinner, Landry’s is offering their famed and familiar Lobster Lovers dish. This succulent lobster tail is topped with shrimp and crab scampi and served with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. Ladies will adore their Raspberry Lemon Drop Martini or Sparkling Lavender Martini to accompany their lobster, while the gentlemen will appreciate the array of spirits and fine wine, such as a Trapiche ‘Oak Cask’ Chardonnay or Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling.

heart melt and your tummy happy, at least it does mine. HOT TIP In a city where superb seafood restaurants are as rare as striking gold, the Southtown Arts District welcomes Little Em’s Oyster Bar with open arms. This small but quaint new restaurant has got tongues wagging. If you’re looking for somewhere chic and modern to take that special someone, this is it! With rotating east coast oysters, crab claws, red snapper ceviche, and caviar service, your date will likely fall in your arms from culinary ecstasy. Jump all in and try something you won’t easily find anywhere else, such as the Russian Ossetra or Royal White Sturgeon. Easily pair oysters or any dish with some scintillating bubbles, or choose from a lovely selection of wine. The crab claws, for example, go excellently with Spain’s new Albarino—Atlantis Castillo De Maetierra. As Tara Stiles once said, “Eat like you love yourself.” Any one of these restaurants will easily suffice. The rest will, no doubt, fall into place.

FAMILY FUN
Creating specia l memories with your teens is easier than it seems
#TeenTime By Janis Turk
If your teenager takes his headphones off or looks up from her cell phone long enough to talk to you, there’s a 99 percent chance you’ll hear the words, “I’m bored.”
16 RIO Magazine
How does a 21st Century parent compete with a phone-obsessed teen? How do you get them to stop texting and scrolling long enough to look up? Get them off their smartphones and take them places you’ll enjoy together! Yes, they’re bound to bring their phones along, so why not create some Instagram-worthy memories together? A recent Internet search shows the most popular hashtags among teens are #goodtimes, #goodmemories, #funweekend, #besttimes, #alwayslaughing, and #funtimes.
Dave and Buster’s located within the Shops at Rivercenter, downtown along the River Walk. With virtual reality games, like the new Terminator Guardian of Fate game, billiards, and bowling, and games like Pop-A-Shot, Pac-Man, and Skee-Ball, and more in Dave and Buster’s Million Dollar Midway arcade, there’s no time to be bored or for teens to play with their phones.
So make hashtag-happy plans with your teens.
The family that plays together stays together. And if it’s game day, watch your family’s favorite team on the big screen. See everything from football to UFC. With so many televisions, you’ll be able to watch the games you want.
#GAMEON For the game boys (and girls) in your life, go to
Best of all, this is more than just an arcade and game area: it’s a fun restaurant with great thesanantonioriverwalk.com
game-day deals on appetizers, like garlic parmesan cheese curds and hot pretzel sticks. And every day, the menu is family-friendly with savory fist-sized sliders, pretzel (hot) dogs, grilled ancho chicken quesadillas, cantina nachos, zesty wings (boneless ones, too), burgers, fries, salads, and more. There’s also a kids’ menu, including mac-and-cheese and chicken strips. Teens will like Dave & Busters. Play together and then post family pictures on Instagram, documenting the #goodtimestogether. #METIME Want to create a day to remember with your daughter? Don’t just take her to a strip mall for a quick mani-pedi moment. Make a memory. Share a special girls’ day. Start at the River Walk for lunch at an outdoor café, like Ostra at the Omni Mokara Hotel & Spa, and then enjoy a special afternoon of spa treatments upstairs at the second-floor spa.

Even if you get just a manicure, you’ll enjoy the restful, elegant ambiance of a firstclass full-service spa. Unwind together at this beautiful but nonintimidating spa retreat. Unwind in a sauna or steam room, soak in a hot whirlpool tub, wear a robe and spa slippers, put cucumbers on your eyelids, and bask in “sanctuary lounges” (resting rooms) with spa music, candles, hot tea, and more. Treat yourselves to an array of spa services designed to pamper and spoil your daughter while restoring your body, mind, and sanity. Enjoy massage therapy, body treatments, facials, manicures, pedicures, hair care, makeup, and beauty services. The 17,000 square-foot spa has 18 private spa treatment rooms, private men’s and women’s sanctuary lounges, and separate men’s and women’s facilities. It also has a spa boutique downstairs at the reception. After a day together of special “chill” #MeTime together, your daughter will think you’re the #coolestmomever.

Teens are only as bored as you let them be. Spending quality time with the kids is the best thing you can do for the family. It doesn’t take a lot of money (in fact, check the Santikos website for deals each month on game and food bundles, pizza and pins bowling discounts, and student Friday discounts). The Sweet Spot {A Chocolate Adventure} By Janis Turk Kilwins
River Street Sweets
If you catch a whiff of chocolate in the wind, you’re probably near one of downtown San Antonio’s
charming
confectionary
kitchens,
chocolate boutiques, and dessert-restaurants, all within a few miles of one another. 20 RIO Magazine
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
So take the one you love (and bring along the kids and your mom!) for a G-rated (G is for “mm-mm good”) outing. Tour San Antonio’s sweet side. Above all, be entertained, as many local shops feature open kitchens with big windows and samples to taste, all welcoming folks to marvel at the magic of chocolate-making. Ditch the bag of kisses, spend time together, and make a unique Valentine’s date for an adventure in chocolate tasting. What a sweet way to spend the day! SWEETS FOR THE SWEET Numerous chocolate-centric spots are sprinkled along the River Walk, within The Shops at Rivercenter, and in nearby Alamo Heights. With Valentine’s Day on the way, thoughts turn to cream-filled bonbons, rich dark truffles, luscious chocolate-dipped strawberries, white chocolatedrizzled caramel apples, and more. Here’s where to savor the sweets: KILWINS Move over, Willy Wonka; we’ve got this. You don’t have to be an Oompa-Loompa to step inside this real-life chocolate factory. One of the finest and friendliest in town is a 2,000 square foot shop called Kilwins at Alamo Plaza. Opened by Larry Rosenberger in 2018, this location is part of a large family-owned company that’s been making chocolates, fudge, and original-recipe ice creams since 1947. “Chocolate is our heritage,” says Rosenberger, so Kilwins offers every kind of chocolate delight imaginable, along with an entire parlor featuring 32 flavors of original-recipe ice creams. Kilwins also serves shakes, malts, root-beer floats, hot chocolate, cappuccinos, and more. Best of all, it’s also a full-line, made-in-store confectionary shop with a front-window theatre kitchen, so drop by and watch candy makers and chocolatiers at work. They may be handpaddling fudge on a marble slab table or dipping something delicious in chocolate, like ripe red strawberries, crispy rice cereal treats, crisp caramel apples, and salty pretzels.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
Or maybe they’ll be making fudge, pecan brittle, almond toffee crunch, or caramel corn. The staff enjoys explaining how everything is prepared. Folks can even enjoy free samples: Rosenberger often passes out little chocolate hearts to remind folks to “put love above all else.” “Here we can make a bad day good, and a good day great, because we try to live in joy and make our shop sweet in every sense of the word,” says Rosenberger. While at Kilwins, be sure to create a custom heart-shaped box of chocolates filled with only the chocolate pieces your sweetheart likes best. Otherwise, as Forrest Gump says, “You never know what you’re gonna get.” SCHAKOLAD CHOCOLATE FACTORY Say “chocolat” with a Spanish accent and it may almost sound like the elegant name of one of San Antonio’s sweetest boutique chocolate shops: Schakolad. Pronounced shaq-ohLAD, its name combines the word chocolate with the last name of celebrated chocolatier Baruch Shaked, who began his career in Argentina in 1969. At San Antonio’s Schakolad, find fresh handmade-in-house chocolates created from European-style recipes passed down through three generations. Using quality ingredients, and paying strict attention to confectionery design aesthetics, their chocolates are handprepared and dipped in the shop, creating custom treats. Build a box of 18, 24, and 48 pieces of hand-picked flavored chocolates, or for silly Valentine’s fun, bring home jars of Shacko chocolate body paint. Schakolad also serves Italian gelatos and coffee drinks. Best known for their delicate signature truffles, Schakolad’s

Stepping into Equinox, the studio of artist Alejandro Sifuentes, you’ll find a gallery of wearable art. Equinox features Sifuentes’ work alongside studio jewelers from across the country and locally. Spotlight on San Antonio’s
BLACK HISTORY By Susan Yerkes
Ellis Alley mosaic
Ellis Alley
28 RIO Magazine
The mere mention of San Antonio conjures up images of the Alamo, the River Walk, the Missions, the NBA Spurs, Mexican food, and margaritas. What you may not immediately think of is Black history. Indeed, the African American population here hovers around 7%, making San Antonio’s Black community the smallest for a U.S. city of this size. But there is a treasure trove of history here— some already known and much emerging. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
The San Antonio African-American Community Archive is only three years old. Still, the nonprofit organization has already established a powerful presence in documenting San Antonio’s fascinating Black history, connecting individuals, scholars, students, and groups for research. Digital and physical exhibits, archive panels, and oral histories to inform and inspire connections. The organization is moving into La Villita–fittingly, near the site of an 1898 Black school that grew to become St. Philip’s College. They will be open by appointment. Meantime, the website offers great exhibits, archived panel discussions, and other materials.
tone for civil life, too. African-American ranchers ran their cattle outside town, and Black businessmen and women, educators, and professionals built strong, often church-centered communities on the historically Black East Side.
Deborah Omowale Jarmon, SAAACAM executive director, recalled her disappointment when she moved to San Antonio in 2012 and looked for a Black history tour.
Black musicians and entertainers drew diverse crowds from throughout the town and far beyond to frequent jazz clubs and night spots, like the Keyhole Club. Blues icon Robert Johnson wrote and recorded some of his best-known work in a room at the downtown Gunter Hotel. Soul food and Creole are well-represented in the city’s vibrant culinary scene, with venerable soul food and music spots like Tucker’s Kozy Korner and Ma Harper’s Creole Kitchen, run by 91-year-old “Ma” herself, and featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” The San Antonio Zulu Association’s annual Keyhole Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Celebration and their Club Taste of New Orleans event during the city’s April Fiesta draw thousands to celebrate Creole-style soul. Proceeds from Zulu events raise monies for scholarships for black students to attend college.
“I had seen an article in the paper about Ellis Alley, so I drove to town and saw the mural and the homes and the marker, and I said, ‘Now where do we go?’ And I couldn’t find anything. Fast forward eight years, a gentleman calls and says his family is in town for his 80th birthday, and he wanted to show them San Antonio’s Black history. They came to the office and saw our exhibits and talked for hours. The picture of African-American history here is blossoming,” Omowale said. It is a vivid picture. African descendants were among the Canary Islands settlers who formed the city’s first civil government. Black Moors accompanied even earlier Spanish explorers. Long before the famous Alamo battle, several free families owned property close to the Alamo. But when the fortified mission became a hot spot in the Texas Revolution, they moved their settlement to a more peaceful town. More than a century ago, San Antonio’s powerful military presence brought Black soldiers and airmen here, and military integration set the
San Antonio has played a role in the continuing story of Civil Rights. In 1960, the downtown Woolworth department store across the plaza gained national fame when it became the first in the South to integrate its lunch counter. The annual Martin Luther King Day march, first held here in 1968, is among the largest in the nation. In the last few years, some 300,000 people have peacefully come together on the January holiday to commemorate Dr. King’s dream of a more just and equal society with a 2.75-mile walk through the East Side.

SIGHTSEEING - TOUR BLACK HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE In 1898, the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas opened a small “Industrial and Normal School” by St. Philip’s Church in La Villita to help educate Black children. Under the guidance of the first teacher, Artemesia Bowden, the school grew in size and scope until it became St. Philip’s College. Today, on a large modern campus three miles east of downtown, St. Philip’s is part of the Alamo Community College District, with 11,000 students enrolled in 70 different disciplines. CARVER CULTURAL COMMUNITY CENTER In 1929, distinguished architect Atlee Ayres designed an impressive library building and auditorium named for Dr. George Washington Carver to serve Black San Antonians. Restored in the 1970s as the Carver Community Cultural Center, it is a gathering place for the arts, with a diverse entertainment lineup. February’s scheduled shows include a Nat King Cole tribute on Feb. 2, three-time Grammy-winning jazz chanteuse Dee Dee Bridgewater on Feb. 6, and R&B phenomenon Mykal Kilgore on Feb. 27. In 2012, San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson was the founding philanthropist of the Carver Academy, now an IDEA Public School, on the same block. WOOLWORTH BUILDING Across the plaza from the Alamo, the historic Woolworth building was the site of one of the first integrated lunch counters in the South. The success of the peaceful campaign to open Woolworth’s and other downtown lunch counters drew national praise. The stately 1921 building now houses Ripley’s entertainment venues. ELLIS ALLEY These three small, neatly restored homes were part of an early African-American neighborhood. Now ringed by hi-rise condos and a city bus hub, they form an island of peaceful dignity. In the center courtyard, a mosaic mural pays tribute to three of the East Side’s “Founding Mothers. Next door, the restored Beacon Light Masonic Lodge building now houses the nonprofit San Antonio for Eastside Growth (SAGE). A large lobby conveys the role of the African-American community in the city’s culture and history. ST. PAUL SQUARE AND CAMEO THEATER Once a spiritual and cultural hub for the East Side, St. Paul Square’s renovated buildings, some dating from the 1800s, anchor a vibrant historic district. The distinctive Cameo Theater, built in the 1940s and advertised as “San Antonio’s Only Exclusive Uptown Negro Playhouse,” hosted movies, vaudeville, and stars including Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, and Fats Domino.
